Publisher’s Note

The past two years has been a time of great transition. Vast numbers of employees have been either laid off temporarily or permanently due the industrial circumstances, with some voluntarily quit jobs, fuelling an already critical talent crisis and this is definitely not making the rise in inflation that the nation is facing any better.

Nevertheless, we were fortunate that with the full reopening of international borders on 1st April 2022, it has given the Business Events industry a boost and great pathway to recovery after awakening from hibernation. Malaysia demonstrated its capability in ensuring health and safety measures across all sectors are well maintained, giving international delegates and event organisers an assurance.

Our core vision to champion Malaysia’s Business Events Industry in tandem with the recently launched MACEOS Strategic Roadmap 2022 – 2030 has set a clear pathway and focus with the four core mission in mind, which is to:

1. position MACEOS as an industry consultant;

2. advocate Business Events economy as a key industry contributor towards the national economy;

3. encourage the continued growth of the Business Events community; and

4. be the Business Events education hub in ASEAN.

The Business Events industry will be a key contributor to the recovery of our country’s economic rebound and as such, MACEOS has taken a proactive role in ensuring the ecosystem is well maintained by conducting relevant trainings and certification programmes as part of MACEOS Four Pillars (I.D.E.A) as well as Goals of the strategic roadmap.

In this edition of BE Magazine, we are honoured to hear from the industrial leaders and experts themselves, sharing their insightful views and opinions which has always been a great guidance to all parties involved.

With the industry showing a positive growth, it is once again time for BE Magazine to shine with the support of all MACEOS members and industrial stakeholders, making it a sought after magazine which has all fundamentals of the Business Events Industry well covered.

Enjoy the read and as we close in to yet another eventful and fruitful year, I would like to wish all a healthy and prosperous 2023 ahead!

TSAM Certification Programme Joint Partnership to Lead Efforts in Tourism and Economic Recovery

Covering the full spectrum of business and leisure travel, Travel Safe Alliance Malaysia (TSAM) has established a comprehensive safe travel solution, TSAM certification programme, which certified by Bureau Veritas Certification Malaysia and launched by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato’ Sri Nancy Shukri in Langkawi on 10th October 2021.

Travel Safe Alliance Malaysia (TSAM) is a partnership among four key players in Malaysia’s tourism, business events and the airline industry, namely the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) consisting of Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and MASwings.

The signing of the MOU signifies a strong commitment that is much needed from the industry players and seriousness to bring back confidence in travelling for all travellers that their health and safety are the utmost priority. Moreover, TSAM has committed to ensuring appropriate health and safety procedures and processes are in place with globally recognised best practices, procedures and recommendations related to preventive measures for a safer travel and business environment in the new norm.

The TSAM certification programme is made up of the ‘Travel Safe’ label for travel and tour arrangements that initiated by MATTA, ‘Clean & Safe Malaysia’ label for hotels that initiated by MAH, and ‘SafeBE’ for Business Events and convention venues, as well as Malaysia Airlines will continue to be the flag bearer to vouch a seamless, safe and hygienic travel experience in line with its Fly Confidently campaign.

These three certification programmes will help about 900 members of MAH, 2,001 active members of MATTA, 180 members of MACEOS, and of course, Malaysia Airlines Berhad to pave the way to restore travellers’ confidence and uphold Malaysia as the preferred safe travel and business event destination in the global market.

In accelerating the recovery of the country’s industries and economy, all industry stakeholders are urged to join the certification programmes through TSAM, to further boost business and leisure travellers’ confidence in coming to Malaysia and ensure them a safe experience of Malaysian hospitality across every touchpoint.

(L-R): Signatories to the MoU were Francis Teo, President of MACEOS, Dato’ N.Subramaniam, President of MAH, Datuk Tan Kok Liang, President of MATTA and Captain Izham Ismail, Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group. The signing ceremony was graced and witnessed by YB Dato Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia; YBhg Datuk Wira Dr Noor Zari Hamat, former Secretary General of MOTAC, Dato’ Hj. Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia and attended by tourism and Business Events industry stakeholders from around ASEAN via a fully virtual platform.
I.D.E.A: DEVELOPMENT 10 MACEOS : I D E A

The Safe Business Events (SafeBE) Certification Programme is initiated by MACEOS to drive the venue certification process and create an end-to-end safe and secure event journey for event organisers and participants. The programme is developed following Bureau Veritas’ SafeGuard international standards besides local safety guidelines, recognising a venue’s implementation of the Government endorsed Business Events Standard Operating Procedures (BE SOPs) and the team’s operational excellence in event management, food and hospitality service standards in the new norm.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) is Malaysia’s first venue to be granted the SafeBE certification, a hygiene and safety label, by Bureau Veritas. To receive the accreditation, the Centre was assessed on its processes, facilities and people, which was based on correct implementation of quality standards, equipment, tools, team knowledge, training and expertise, in order to ensure the venue’s compliance with the assessors’ stringent criteria and ability to operate safely in the new norm.

MACEOS strongly recommend members from the exhibition and convention centre sector to get their centres certified under the SafeBE Certification Programme, to boost public and business confidence in the international standards of venue operations in Malaysia and elevate the country’s attractive value proposition and profile as a safe destination for business events.

You can register your interest for the audit with Bureau Veritas: https://onboardwith.bureauveritas.com.

TSA Malaysia will provide unequivocal assurance to travellers and business events delegates that Malaysia is safe and ready to welcome international visitors to our shores.

Having TSA Malaysia audit and certify our businesses will go a long way in driving up confidence of our stakeholders and clients in the market.

PENANG: Your Events BElong in Penang

Travel Safe in Penang

On December 2021, TSAM has joined forces with the Penang State EXCO Office for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE) to raise the travel market confidence in Penang state. With tourism activities gradually picking up, the joint partnership is seen as a timely move by Penang to lead efforts in tourism and economic recovery, where safety and hygiene aspects are prioritised across the industry including for hotels, food establishments, convention centres, tours, and transportation.

The double assurance of Penang’s industryspecific safety accreditation programme and TSAM’s travel solution certified by Bureau Veritas, raised the benchmark for travel safety to welcome travellers with Penang hospitality.

BElong Campaign

The BElong in Penang Campaign aims to inculcate optimism and enthusiasm in the Penang business events industry while also laying the groundwork for the state to continue funding hybrid domestic and international clients and events.

The BElong campaign’s concept revolves around three key messages, notably, uncompromising hospitality at the heart of our Business Events, making Penang ready for the return of tourists, business event travellers and organisers and finally, putting in place all requisite safety and hygiene measures.

The first two letters BE associates with business events, employing the term ‘belong,’ which generally signifies having an affinity for a specific place or situation, such as a sense of belonging. The campaign’s goals include sending a positive message that Penang is open for business beginning in 2022, maintaining destination awareness and increasing destination confidence in health and safety measures for corporate events, increasing RFPs and interest in future events to be held in Penang, and potentially increasing job opportunities in the tourism, hospitality, and business events industries in Penang.

The BE Campaign name, which associated with the state’s vision of becoming a smart state while continuing to develop its digital economy through Penang2030, will entice more tourists and business event organisers to return to Penang and choose Penang as their next preferred destination for future events. The business events industry in Penang has been active in updating their products and upgrading their work regardless, exhibiting their resilience and commitment to the industry.

Penang is eagerly anticipating the business travellers’ return and is certain that everyone is missing Penang’s fantastic food, welcoming warmth, and breathtaking views and sights. Penang, the melting pot of heritage, culture and nature also strongly believes it is timely for this new campaign to launch on March 2022, as many countries are opening their borders and mitigating the event planning.

I.D.E.A: DEVELOPMENT 12 MACEOS : I D E A

On 18th October 2022, Penang Global Tourism launched the ‘Experience Penang’ campaign with tagline ‘Diversity of Asia’ in Singapore to attract Singapore travellers after two years of closed borders. The tourism bureau is also on a mission to expand the footprint of all international travellers beyond the popular sites. Let’s rediscover the beauty of Penang beyond George Town with two distinct campaigns, namely ‘The Opposite Side of the Island’ promoting Seberang Perai and ‘The Other Side of the Island’, showcasing Balik Pulau and Teluk Bahang’s natural beauty and unchartered holiday experiences for travellers.

The iconic Penang is celebrating a second UNESCO accreditation, the Habitat Penang Hill won the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award Urban Category 2022 and recognised by UNESCO as Malaysia’s third biosphere reserve, which comprises of 12,481 hectares of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The first Heritage Site, George Town continues to draw visitors with its carefully preserved pre-war buildings, beautifully restored mansions, eclectic street art, vintage shops and modern cafes.

In addition, PCEB also announced plans to accelerate the state’s plan to attract international businesses hosting conferences, exhibitions and for event organisers. Penang boasts some of the largest integrated convention centres, including world-class hotel meetings and event spaces and is forming strategic alliances with corporate travel partners and global event organisers to secure its calendar of MICE activities.

SABAH: Ready To Be A Key BE Destination In Malaysia

The recipients of the TSAM certification will encourage more tourism players into the fold. The greater hope is that the certification will bring a new chapter to Sabah tourism and make Sabah an attractive tourist destination.

The certification is also a marketing and branding tool that you can leverage to sharpen the positioning of your product and service, and Sabah, in the eyes of the world.

Sabah Is Ready

In line with the reopening of travel borders to Malaysia on 1st April 2022, Sabah is ready to welcome international tourists with 54 local industry players successfully recognised by Travel Safe Alliance Malaysia (TSAM) for fulfilling tourism health and safety standards.

On 31st March 2022, Sabah Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji bin Haji Noor, who launched TSAM at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) and presented certificates to TSAM recipients. TSAM’s endeavour greatly complements the Sabah State Government’s initiatives to uplift the tourism industry by promoting Sabah as a trusted, safe, and attractive tourist destination that caters to the modern traveller’s demand for health and safety.

Sabah BE Unite

Sabah BE Unite is another milestone moment for MACEOS with Mr Francis Teo leading MACEOS delegation on a 2-day familiarisation tour from 12th to 13th August 2022, and the appointment of Datuk Hajah Rosmawati Lasuki, CEO of Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) as the Sabah Region Chair for MACEOS. The appointment was an opportunity to strengthen the business event capacity in Sabah and boost the capabilities of Sabah players in the BE industry, as well as foster business collaborations.

Sabah is ready for growth in the BE sector, with its vibrant business environment. MACEOS has been working closely with Sabah Tourism Board (STB) to restore the BE industry post-pandemic. Among the initiatives rolled out was the Congress Certification Programme (CCP) in Sabah since 2021, which has up-skilled 91 Sabah participants.

Moreover, the ‘Sabah, Be Here For You’ initiative by STB in 2020 was created to provide incentive support to business event (BE) organisers and to maximise the potential of business events. These types of support were applicable to physical, hybrid and virtual events involving corporate meetings, incentive groups, business events and exhibitions, with a maximum of RM100,000 to be given. As of August 2022, 14 events have benefited from the BE incentive. In addition, the Sabah state government would subsidise RM600 for business event players in Sabah to join MACEOS.

Both the government and tourism industry leaders in Sabah are strongly in favour of accelerating developments in BE industry in the state. Various efforts have been taken to enhance professional networks in Sabah, which will create a legacy for BE industry.

6th World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2022

Sabah will be hosting the 6th World Tourism Conference (WTC) from 28th to 30th November 2022 at Sabah International Convention Center (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu, which is jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The selection of Sabah again after 12 years, recognising the commitment and leadership of the Sabah state government which has always led to the sustainable and constant development of the tourism sector to successfully position Sabah as a major tourist destination on the world stage.

Themed ‘Tourism Futures Reimagined’, WTC 2022 aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform which champions thought leadership on tourism futures and strategies driving tourism’s recovery and resilience in a post-pandemic world. The congress will feature a line-up of world-renowned speakers in four sessions namely, Decoding Tourism Futures, Discovering Niche Opportunities, Redefining Tourism Success and Rebuilding Tourism Resilience and Readiness. SABAH An Ideal BE Destination

Being nestled in the north of Borneo Island is the state of Sabah, a destination filled with exoticness, diversity, unique cultures and food for adventurous taste buds. It is the complete destination for both business and leisure travel.

Business events is not new to Sabah who has proudly hosted many international events and groups over the past decade, offering worldstandard facilities for regional and international events as well as professional and innovative event organisers and suppliers. With its relatively new addition, the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), is a great addition to serve this niche together with the existing ancillary options of the hotels as meeting spaces.

Sabah’s growing popularity as an incentive and meeting destination is primarily due to its people and geographical location. Known for its virgin rainforest, beautiful idyllic islands, and also for worldclass conservation and wildlife sanctuaries. Sabah’s rich natural heritage is guarded and managed in a number of parks and protected areas throughout the state. Also, with over 30 ethnic groups living harmoniously here, it offers a glimpse of a unique cultural tapestry. Renowned for their charming hospitality, Sabahans’ warm nature contributes much to a memorable Incentive and Meeting experience.

In addition, after the reopening of international borders on 1st April, Sabah now receives 40 weekly direct International flights, with South Korea having the highest frequencies. The other direct flights are from Singapore (14), Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam (4), Bangkok, Thailand (3), and Manila, Philippines (2). Sabah aims to improve access to the state by increasing the number of international flights from major foreign cities.

For domestic flights, there are currently 372 weekly services to Sabah. The direct routes are from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, Kuching and Labuan.

In the effort to enhance professional networks for the destination and create a legacy for current and future industry in Sabah, ‘SABAH, BE here for you’ is initiated to provide incentive support to business event organisers and to maximise the potential of business events.

A BE story with Minister of MOTAC

Let’s BE Greater, Together and Meet in Malaysia!

Business Events (BE) are catalyst for socio-economic growth, and the legacy impact will help power Malaysia’s continued development as a knowledge and creative society. Here, I would like to reassure that MOTAC will give the fullest support to the BE industry as we recognise business events as one of the key economic drivers for Malaysia.

As the nation is transiting into endemic phase, Malaysia is all set to welcome international travellers as the borders fully reopen on 1st April 2022, with no quarantine on arrival for fully vaccinated travellers. We are delighted with the announcement made by the government on the restarting of international travel for the first time after two years of COVID-19 pandemic-related closures, as it is a positive and crucial step towards the country’s economic recovery, the tourism industry and related industries.

BE Industry Accelerates Economic Recovery

As a legacy builder and job creator, the business events industry is a key contributor for both the knowledge and visitor economy, and plays a significant role in accelerating Malaysia’s economic recovery. From establishing trade relations, talent and knowledge exchange, attracting foreign investments and building industries that support the economy, to human capital development and poverty alleviation, business events are a powerful platform to help enhance a country’s global trade and intellectual engagement, as well as advance socioeconomic progress.

MOTAC has been very supportive of business event activities that can help the country’s economic recovery. Since its establishment by MOTAC in 2010, MyCEB has successfully supported 2,687 events which converted to RM17 billion in estimated economic impact from the year 2010 to 2022.

Based on studies that are supported by international experience, the business event visitor spends three times more than the average tourist and has a large multiplier effect, which about 40% of the BE visitors travel with their spouses, and 60% of them return as tourists later. Hence, the revival of the BE industry is key to helping Malaysia’s economy to get back on track.

Innovation and Digitalisation On BE Industry

Despite the severe impacts on business, the Covid-19 pandemic has given Malaysia a chance to focus on the upgrade and development of our products, services, opportunities and attractions which we believe will deliver extraordinary experiences for business travellers once international borders reopen. It is fortunate that we have seen new digital transformation in business events industry and the BE industry has undergone a paradigm shift to digital and hybrid events, meaning digital event strategists training will be essential for event professionals even in the endemic world.

Story

Together, We Can Move Further

Under the National Budget 2022, the government has allocated a total value of RM1.6 billion through seven key initiatives including matching grants and wages subsidy programme to be implemented this year for the tourism rejuvenation efforts. There are various funds announced for the upkeep of tourism infrastructure as well as specifically for budget hotels are timely, and would contribute to the rebuilding of the tourism industry’s competitiveness. Although the Malaysian government has tried to offer various support and initiatives, these supports have limitations and MyCEB will need strong funding to effectively support the industry.

Furthermore, the MoU signed by MAH, MATTA, MACEOS and MAG signifies a strong commitment that is much needed from our industry players. The collaboration is seen as a timely move to facilitate and enhance Malaysia’s leisure and business tourism, in line with the government’s vision to increase tourist arrivals and receipts in our country. I am confident that these TSAM certification programmes will restore the travellers’ confidence in coming to Malaysia and I am sure that all of you will continue your good work in promoting Malaysia to the rest of the world.

BE’s Way Forward

In line with MOTAC’s Strategic Plan 2022-2026 and National Tourism Policy (NTP) 2020-2030, the launch of Malaysia Business Events Strategic Marketing Plan (SMP) 2021-2030 places significant emphasis on integrated approach towards business events and international sporting events industry, focusing on collaborations and partnerships. The successful implementation of the SMP targets to attract a cumulative total of 5.9 million delegates and generate RM42.12 billion in estimated economic impact between 2021 and 2030.

Meanwhile, MOTAC continues its effort on rehabilitating tourism businesses, stimulate travel demand and review travel restrictions for a swift recovery. The domestic tourism promotions must be strengthened while activities targeting overseas market are reignited.

On a positive note, we continue to have new leads coming in from our key international markets, showing Malaysia’s desirability as a business events destination remains positive. With the latest bids won by our fellow Malaysians, I hope we will continue to pave the way for organising world-class business events. Ultimately, I hope to see business events be a key driver to a strong knowledge economy which will positively impact our local industries and businesses.

In accelerating the recovery of BE industry, MyCEB launched three initiatives recently namely 3R programme, MySafe Business Events Planner and the MoU signing between MyCEB and Kraftangan Malaysia in MyCEB Association Day, themed “Dream Possible”. BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA 19

A conversation with CEO of MyCEB

MyCEB serves as a central hub to assist meeting and event planners to bid and stage international business events in Malaysia and acts as a channel for national product development. With the full reopening of borders, MyCEB hopes for a strong rebound in the business events industry as the border reopening will open doors for industry revival to boost recovery.

Will international events in a different country still hold weight in the future? What international events have been confirmed for Malaysia in 2022 and beyond?

Amid a global pandemic with competitive landscape, business event professionals need competencies and resources to adapt, evolve, innovate and stay ahead of the game. This is where MyCEB plays its role as the central agency to assist association leaders and work closely with associations in hope to invite future international conferences, conventions and symposiums to Malaysia, turning our possible dreams to reality.

Despite experiencing a significant shift in the global business events landscape, MyCEB continues to work with Malaysian association leaders in bidding for future international events. This continuous strong partnership and collaboration between industry players in sharing expertise and ideas to reinvigorate the industry, enables all involved to rise above the challenges over the past few years.

As of May 2022, Malaysia managed to secure a total of 149 business events to be held from 2022 to 2030 in our country. Let’s talk more about MyCEB’s intention to boost domestic and international events. What are MyCEB’s plan for 2022 towards this focus?

During the downtime, we have been up-skilling, re-skilling, multi-skilling and currently going full force with the Meet in Malaysia campaign support that has been extended to the end of December 2022 as one of the key recovery strategies for business events in Malaysia. Consisting of “Let’s Meet Tomorrow”, “Let’s Meet Locally” and “Let’s Meet Now” programme, the Meet in Malaysia campaign offers support to local associations, local organisations and industry players to revive the business events activities targeting on domestic delegates. As a result, there are 67 programmes that has been approved between 2020 to 2021, and the equal spread of wealth by engaging non-central venues in the country has been encouraged.

At the same time, MyCEB launched a 10-year plan named Malaysia Business Events Strategic Marketing Plan (SMP) 2021 – 2030 that is anchored upon three strategic axes namely optimisation, foresight and competitiveness, which includes reinventing corporate hospitality programmes, form more global alliances and investing in the very needed digital transformation. Meanwhile, marketing the country does not stop, MyCEB is also actively participating in trade shows such as the ICCA Congress, IMEX, UFI Congress and IBTM World.

Recently, MyCEB launched the MySafe Business Events Planner, a join effort with Business Events Council Malaysia (BECM), reflecting our purpose to help communities network, collaborate, and innovate together. Being an information platform that is centralised, the MySafe Business Events Planner is a step-by-step format to assist and guide international delegates and event organisers through the safety measures as well as to rebuild public confidence in Malaysia’s meetings and events industry.

In addition, MyCEB is also proud to introduce the newest 3R initiative namely Reset, Restart and Responsible as a recovery for the BE industry. The overall outcome aimed to boost the potential of business events industry from every single party involved including international delegates, event organisers and industry stakeholders themselves.

Malaysia stays focus to revitalise the industry and MOTAC through MyCEB will ensure that we are heading towards reaching the maximum level of success. With the help of this initiative, industry partners will receive support to make a presence at international tradeshows like IMEX Frankfurt, IMEX America and IBTM World.

On top of all this luring support, the Bureau shall assist in reskilling and upskilling industry players to obtain professional qualification such as CMP, CEM, IAPCO or other international qualifications that are available for our industry. Hopefully, with this effort, our industry will be better recognised, locally and internationally.

Moving forward, what will MyCEB be engaging to improve the business events landscape?

MyCEB will continue to play a pivotal role in educating the public that business events are catalyst for socio-economic growth, which not only stretches beyond direct spending and job creation, but also amplifies the benefits beyond tourism. The legacy impact will help power Malaysia’s continued development as a knowledge and creative society.

With new initiatives that launched recently, Malaysia is ready to organise business activities in accordance with the SOPs that have been set while maintaining a high level of safety. Let’s move forward together confidently and welcome back international delegates.

Balance and harmony are important in our life. I think men and women are created very differently for two different perspectives on the table, shaping an equal environment in the society.

You need to confidently believe in what you are doing and chase it. As long as you have the right attitude, and that ambitions drive and tenacity. It is important to remember that you need to surround yourself with people that lift you up and pick the role models that makes you want to be a stronger and better person.

The Learning Continues:

Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events champions

E-Learning through unprecedented times

With its rank in the Top 20 in the world position for QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 in Hospitality and Leisure Management subject, Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events (SHTE) understands that it is becoming increasingly important for the institution to reconsider conventional approach to its model, and pivot strategies that can deliver sustainable outcomes to ensure that education disruptions are minimised.

The past 2 years saw COVID-19 upending economies, healthcare and other industries including education. Despite this, the education landscape continues to transform as the world becomes more globalised due to the rapid digitalisation efforts across multiple sectors. Considering the need for globalisation in education, there needs to be a new game plan for governments and industry players to mitigate future risks of another global crisis.

For SHTE, the integration of technology and industry partnerships into its curriculum is one that also aligns with the changes in the sector. Even prior to COVID-19, the hospitality, tourism and events industry were experiencing unprecedented changes at the expense of rapid digitalisation.

In order to adapt to the disruptions created by the pandemic back in 2020, SHTE had to change their practices and it opened more opportunities for virtual and hybrid classes. SHTE acted upon this change and connected with more industry partners to enhance the learning experience of students through virtual speaker series, talks, forums and co-teaching of classes.

The following are some of the virtual events hosted by SHTE and supported by MYCEB and MACEOS as well as members of MACEOS.
