match report Resilient Reds overcome Wellington Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
A second-half brace from Ken IlsO has inspired Adelaide United to a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night. The Dane was instrumental in the second stanza after the Reds fell behind early through Spaniard Mandi.
Halloran’s cross from the left picked out Doyle, who got his positioning all wrong and headed past his own goalkeeper.
But a Tom Doyle own goal on the stroke of half-time got Adelaide fortuitously back into the match, before the Dane struck twice in the space of 18 minutes.
The second-half commenced with a bang as Ilsø scored his first goal for the Club with a sensational header to make it 2-1.
Marco Kurz made four changes, some tactical and others forced, to the starting line-up that lost to Perth Glory two weeks’ ago. Taylor Regan received his maiden appearance of the season replacing Michael Jakobsen (soreness), while Michael Marrone was given the nod at right-back. Ilsø made his third league start of the year, leading the line, and Ryan Kitto his first with Ben Halloran on the other flank. It was a cagey start from both teams as they struggled to find any fluency to their play, before Wellington began to show more purpose going forward. Their endeavour was rewarded on 14 minutes when Mandi hit a bouncing effort past Paul Izzo after he was unable to adequately clear the ball. The Reds’ concession seemed to spark them into life after lacking rhythm in the opening half hour.
Key moments: 14’ | GOAL: Izzo’s punch is cleared but only as far as Mandi and rifles his bouncing effort into the ground and in from the edge of the box.
Michael Marrone’s expert delivery was inch-perfect for the 31-year-old to steer his effort past Filip Kurto.
45’+1’ | GOAL! Adelaide get back into match through Doyle’s own goal after he headed in Halloran’s cross.
And he was credited with United’s third, after some initial confusion, as the ball also appeared to ricochet off Doyle again and beyond the gloveman.
47’ | GOAL! Ilsø connects with Marrone’s incisive cross and heads past Kurto for the lead.
Halloran ignited the move, surging forward and threading a pass to Kitto, whose back post cross deflected off both the Dane and Doyle on 65 minutes. Adelaide played smart football to see out the match, limiting the Phoenix’s chances, while exploiting them on the counter. Halloran almost scored his first league goal in stoppage time, but squandered his header from Nikola Mileusnić’s cross. However, it was rendered inconsequential as United bounced back and extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches against the New Zealand outfit.
But they could not have envisaged equalising in the manner that they did as United were invited back into the contest right on half-time.

65’ | GOAL! An excellent attacking move sees Halloran dribble forward before feeding Kitto and his low cross finds Ilsø who manages to deflect his tap-in off Doyle.

Round 6 Preview Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
Adelaide United Head Coach, Marco Kurz, warned the Reds must be wary of Brisbane Roar’s transition game ahead of tomorrow night’s blockbuster at Coopers Stadium. The Reds will be confident of stringing consecutive wins together for the first time this season after their 3-1 away triumph over Wellington Phoenix. The Roar, meanwhile, have also found form following a solid 2-0 win over Melbourne City last weekend, in what promises to be a fascinating encounter. Kurz is anticipating Brisbane to implement a more expansive playing style than the ‘Nix and highlighted some of their key players United must be mindful of. “Our aim is to be better than Brisbane tomorrow but I think it’s a very compact playing team,” Kurz told reporters at the pre-match press conference. “They’ve a good transition game with two very good foreign wingers (Eric Bautheac and Tobias Mikkelsen) and Adam Taggart, who’s a very good striker. “They’ve got two good foreigner midfielders (Alex Lopez and Thomas Kristensen) and they’re a very experienced team and know what to do on the pitch. “I don’t expect them to play defensively, but I do expect them to play compact, and I don’t think they’ll press us very high. “But on transition they’re very dangerous and we must be careful.”
He added that they must again turn Coopers Stadium into a fortress after they suffered their maiden home defeat of 2018 against Perth Glory back in Round 4. “I think it’s very important to be strong in the home games,” he believed. “We lost the last home game and our goal is to play well and reach three points. “I think it’s important to be a good team at home and we’ll start tomorrow again.” The German intimated that Ken Ilsø will likely lead the line for a second straight week after his brace against the Phoenix last week. “Ken (Ilsø) is ready, I think it’s good for him to play minutes,” he revealed.
Kurz was also adamant that the competitiveness in the Hyundai A-League is a lot tougher than last season. Just four points separate the second-placed Melbourne Victory and the eighth-positioned Western Sydney Wanderers, with the ex-Schalke defender suggesting that every team has to perform at their optimum to secure the three points. “I think if you see each week, they’re very close games,” he explained. “Brisbane beat Melbourne City, Sydney lost against (Melbourne) Victory, and I think each team has to perform in each game the best they can do to get the points. “I think this year it’s a very hard competition, stronger than last year.”
“He feels very confident after the two goals he scored. ‘It’s very good for him and when he works hard always in the training he’ll be a good player for us for the whole season.”

Kurz delighted with improved second-half Marco Kurz hailed Adelaide United’s response after a lacklustre opening 30 minutes in their 3-1 win against Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night. Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
The Reds showed immense character after their slow start, compounded by falling behind in the 14th minutes through Mandi’s bouncing strike. Tom Doyle scored an own goal on the stroke of half-time to get Adelaide back on level terms, before Danish striker, Ken Ilsø, bagged a second-half brace.
and created a couple of good chances. “That’s why we were the better team in the second-half.” The German tactician lauded Ilsø’s impact after he scored his first goals for the Club, though stopped short of suggesting he was an out-and-out striker. The 31-year-old dispatched a clinical header off Michael Marrone’s brilliant cross in the 47th minute and then bundled the ball home from Ryan Kitto’s low delivery. “I’m happy for Ken (Ilsø) that he scored two goals today for us,” he said.
Kurz lamented his side’s uninspiring start to the game but was pleased with the second-half performance from his players.
“But he’s not a (natural) number nine, but he can play as a nine, he’s intelligent enough.
“I think the last sixty minutes we were better not at the start, Kurz said in the post-match press conference.
“But he’s more of a player around the number nine, who has a good feeling for the space and knows when to jump in the right place to meet crosses.”
“We started not good enough in my opinion, the first thirty minutes we didn’t feel comfortable with our game plan.
The result was Adelaide’s second win of the season, and have now collected eight points from the opening five games.
“The equaliser before half-time was very important and good for us and then after half-time we played more comfortable with more ball speed and a more possession-based game MATC H DAY P ROGR AMME - ROU N D 6

Ilso delighted to get on the scoresheet Ken Ils0 admits scoring his first goals for Adelaide United was important for his confidence moving forward.
Ilsø said while he was pleased to find the back-of-the-net, the own goal just before the break was crucial in changing the momentum.
Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
“It got us to half-time with a good feeling and in the second-half the grass became a little bit more wet and we had a little bit more flow in our game and it was a little bit of a faster game.”
The danish attacker was entrusted to the lead the line against Wellington Phoenix by Marco Kurz for the first time this season. And the move paid dividends as he netted a second-half brace to complete a 3-1 comeback win. His first arrived via a terrific header off Michael Marrone’s cross, before bundling in a squared ball from Ryan Kitto.
“For an offensive player like me it’s always important to get on the scoresheet,” Ilsø told reporters at the Adelaide United Training Centre. “I think in the game itself the most important (goal) was actually the own goal, just before half-time.
The Dane, capable of playing in a number of advanced positions, said he had no real preference of where he would like to be deployed on the pitch.
“I prefer both positions, ten (attacking midfield) and nine (striker),” he revealed. “I’ve been playing a lot as a number nine in the recent years but I don’t really care as long as I’m playing. “But for me it was nice to start the game, but Marco (Kurz) also knows he has a big squad and a lot of different players who can play in a lot of different positions. “So from that perspective I think it’s important that he keeps everybody up to date and give everyone a good feeling in the team.” The 31-year-old moved to the Reds back in July and said the transition to Adelaide has been seamless. He added that the camaraderie in the dressing room has also helped. “I’m feeling very comfortable,” he continued. “We’ve a very good team, a lot of good banter in the team. “A lot of fun, a lot laughs so they’ve taken very good care of me from the beginning and I feel good in the team.”

3 things we spotted Adelaide United managed to secure a 3-1 comeback win over Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night, thanks to an inspired second-half performance. Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
Reds’ resilience impressive Away from home in one of the toughest places to play football and get a result, Adelaide could have easily dropped their heads after falling behind. Instead, the concession was the catalyst they needed to spark them into life. After a slow opening half hour, Adelaide took complete control and dominated the second stanza and were lightning quick in transition. It ended up being a strong display on the road and a real character-building performance, with the key trying to now consolidate this triumph with a win over Brisbane Roar at Coopers Stadium on Friday.
When it rains, it pours Ken Ilsø was yet to score in a competitive match to the start the season for the Reds. But that was about to change in his third league start of the campaign. The Dane, leading the line, rose to the occasion when the team needed it most. With the match poised at 1-1, he bagged a second-half brace in clinical fashion to seal the win for Adelaide. His first goal arrived in the 47th minute when he expertly placed his header past the Wellington goalkeeper from Michael Marrone’s cross. And he did not have to wait long to net his second for the Club, finishing off an incisive attacking move some 18 minutes later. His intelligent forward runs throughout the encounter caused the Phoenix defence a number of headaches for a player traditionally deployed behind the striker.
Regan resolute in first start of the season The defender was flawless in his first start and appearance of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 campaign. Replacing Michael Jakobsen, who missed the match with soreness, Taylor Regan was simply unwavering in centre-back. He boasted an 86% passing accuracy rate, while making vital interventions and clearances. Regan and fellow centre-back partner, Jordan Elsey, recorded a combined 15 clearances and a 100% successful tackle rate.

match report Resolute Reds claim 2-0 win over Canberra Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
Adelaide United Women clinched a solid 2-0 win over Canberra United at Coopers Stadium on Thursday night to maintain the Reds’ unbeaten start. Veronica Latsko netted her second of the season to make it two goals from her last two matches, while a fortuitous deflection which ended in an own goal sealed United’s win late on. The result also sees the Reds secure a third straight clean sheet and move provisionally into equal first place on the table.
Adelaide curtailed Canberra for the majority of the second-half, who only had one glaring opportunity through Madelyn Whittall’s missed header from six yards.
Head Coach, Ivan Karlović named an unchanged line-up for the match following their 1-0 away win over Brisbane Roar last Sunday.
Heyman almost found the net against her former side had it not been for a great save to deny her header.
The Reds dominated proceedings early and controlled possession without creating any real chances.
However, it did not matter as Adelaide doubled their advantage four minutes from time via an own goal.
However, Heyman showed great endeavour going forward, proving to be Adelaide’s outlet on the wing.
Latsko’s shot was initially parried but the ball rebounded off Prior and into the vacant goal.
Canberra slowly got back into the game with Ellie Carpenter looking their most threatening player.
It was another strong performance from Karlović’s team as they face Melbourne City next Saturday.
Key moments: 8’ | Heyman drives to the byline and her cross finds Latsko but her shot is blocked from six yards out. 27’ | GOAL! Fridriksdóttir switches the play with a lovely diagonal ball to Heyman, whose cross picks out Latsko at the back post to bundle her effort home. 62’ | Heyman’s free header is brilliantly saved by Khamis following a perfect delivery from Dylan Holmes. 86’ | GOAL! Latsko is played through and her one-on-one shot is saved and ricochets off Natasha Prior.

Round 5 Preview Emily Condon says the upbeat morale amongst the players has helped contribute to Adelaide United’s early season success, and wants their strong form to continue against Melbourne City on Saturday.
Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi
Ivan Karlovic’s side remains unbeaten following an impressive start to the Westfield W-League 2018/19 campaign, having recorded two wins and a draw from the opening three matches.
“It’s always good to have the win, but we also played some pretty good football.” The 20-year-old attributed the team’s great start to a solid preseason and that the new arrivals to the squad have been able to adapt seamlessly to their new surroundings. “I think we’re just reaping the rewards of our hard work,” she said. “This is the best start to a season we’ve had over the whole course of eleven years of the W-League.

Isabel Hodgson added to W-League squad Adelaide United can confirm the signing of Isabel Hodgson for the remainder of the Westfield W-League 2018/19 season. @AUFCWomen
Isabel has played at a good level in America and provides the team with another attacking option
Hodgson joins the Reds from the United States, having just completed her season with East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Buccaneers. She is also still in the process of completing her college career with ETSU. The 22-year-old winger played for the Reds between 2013 and 2016, playing 15 matches, after moving from local Women’s National Premier League side, Fulham United. Head Coach, Ivan Karlović, said the addition of Hodgson bolsters the depth within the squad. “Isabel has played at a good level in America and provides the team with another attacking option,” he said. MATC H DAY P ROGR AMME - ROU N D 6
“She has previously had experience playing in the W-League and I’m confident she’ll be able to make a seamless transition. “We’ve started the W-League season well, but now we want to continue with the momentum that we have and continue pushing for positive results.”

match report Young Reds play out entertaining 2-2 draw with Brisbane @aufc_YouthTeam // Photo by Andrew Hudson
Adelaide United Youth was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Brisbane Roar Youth at Eric Evans Reserve on Sunday. The Young Reds opened the scoring early through Ninko Beric and then retook the lead via Pacifique Niyongabire with five minutes remaining. However, Adelaide’s advantage was only fleeting with Shannon Brady equalising two minutes later in the stifling conditions. Head Coach, Paul Pezos, fielded a strong line-up for the Round 3 Foxtel Y-League match, but was without Carlo Armiento, who travelled with the senior side to Wellington. After squandering an effort two minutes earlier, Beric made no mistake in the sixth minute to open his account for the season with a thunderous strike.
Brisbane then enjoyed the better of the chances and were relentless going forward without finding the breakthrough. Mirza Muratovic and Brady were the Young Roar’s most dangerous in attack, but it was Jay Barnett who came the closest to restoring parity when his low drive caught Daniel Marguš scrambling. Muratovic continued to threaten after half-time but was wasteful in front of goal. The Roar then netted an equaliser courtesy of Daniel Leck finishing off an incisive forward move. The Young Reds thought they had won the match when the lively Niyongabire got his head on the end of a set-piece to make it 2-1 in the 85th minute. Though the lead was virtually immediately cancelled out by Brady. The 22-year-old steered home his shot from Lleyton Brooks’ cross. There was still time for some late drama, with both sides having glorious opportunities to net a winner.

round 4 preview Lachlan Brook admits he is unsure what to expect when Adelaide United Youth host Perth Glory Youth on Sunday morning. Gianluca Filosi @GianlucaFilosi // Photo by Andrew Hudson
The Young Reds return to the boutique Marden Sports Complex looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Adelaide had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Brisbane Roar last round after conceding a late equaliser and have four points from two games. The Glory have the same points as United, but have played three matches, and suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Melbourne City Youth in their previous clash. Brook said having a very similar team to the one that competed impressively in the local National Premier League has contributed to a so far solid campaign. “I think the NPL last year has definitely helped us because the boys know each other well,” Brook said.
Brook acknowledged it is hard to fully comprehend just how their opponents will play, given the turnover of players from year to year in the Foxtel Y-League. “It’s hard to say because youth teams can change so much from each NYL season to each NYL season,” he said. “So it’s not like you can compare to last year. “I know a couple of the boys that play in the team are very good players, so they’re definitely not a bad team.” The 17-year-old is hoping to use this competition to improve in some aspects of his game. “For me it’s getting fit and having more of a defensive impact on the team,” he stated. “I think the way the game is going at the moment, if I can get that part of my game tuned up, I think I can definitely do a lot more and hopefully push my level up a bit, and score some goals as well.” He said if he can realise some of these personal objectives it will provide him with the best chance of featuring in the Hyundai A-League side.
“It’s not like us A-League boys that drop down don’t fit in or anything. “We’ve a good relationship with the boys in the team which is really important. “But I think for some of us especially myself I need to get a lot fitter as well so I can do more for the team as well but that will come with games.”
