ATTA CK IN G D I S P L AY SECUR ES T HIR D S T R A I G H T WI N A dynamic attacking performance from Adelaide United has secured a resounding 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday.

Michaël Maria, who was influential throughout the first-half, cut inside and passed to Halloran before playing a one-two with Riley McGree and scoring at the near post.

key moments:

Minutes later, the visitors were in front. Another marauding run from Maria saw him bamboozle his opponent before his cross was emphatically side-volleyed home by Mileusnić for his second of the season.

26’ | GOAL! Halloran nets his fourth goal across all competitions, after squeezing his finish past Birighitti at the near post with Maria and McGree involved in the build-up.

First-half goals from Ben Halloran, Nikola Mileusnić and Kristian Opseth extinguished an early Milan Duric penalty, as all three of the Reds’ goals arrived from sensational offensive moves.

Adelaide’s incisiveness and sharpness in offensive areas was a sight to behold at times as the Mariners had no answers.

38’ | GOAL! Mileusnić’ spectacularly side-foot volleys Maria’s cross past a helpless Birighitti.

And on the stroke of half-time, their free-flowing football was on full display to make it 3-1.

45’ | GOAL! Opseth bags his first goal for the Club after completing an incisiveness counter-attack, clinically converting Halloran’s cross.

The Reds could have easily won by more and also missed a penalty to kill off the tie after 60 minutes. However, it did not matter as United registered their third straight win of the season and sixth straight victory in Gosford. Gertjan Verbeek made two changes to the side that defeated Brisbane Roar last round. Louis D’Arrgio returned from Young Socceroos duty to replace Ryan Kitto, shifting Michaël Maria to left-back, and striker Opseth started with Al Hassan Toure away with the Olyroos. Meanwhile, Jordan Elsey and George Blackwood were both named on the bench, having not played since Round 1 due to respective injuries.

James Troisi spread a brilliant diagonal ball for Halloran to run on to before his lovely weighted low cross was rifled in by Opseth for his maiden goal. It was the perfect ending for the Reds as they went into the break with a comfortable buffer. Adelaide should have put the game to bed prior to the hour when McGree won a penalty, however the ensuing Opseth penalty was saved. Paul Izzo was called into action to make two strong stops later in the second stanza, but for the most part United were fairly untroubled.

Adelaide made a slow start when Michael Marrone brought down Sam Silvera inside the box. Duric dispatched the subsequent penalty in the sixth minute as the Mariners capped off a promising start. But once Adelaide grabbed the ascendancy they were ruthless in attack, appearing dangerous every time they went forward and cruised to the win. Adelaide equalised on 26 minutes after Halloran finished off a slick passage of play. 2

6’ | GOAL: Duric converts his penalty leaving Izzo with no chance.

59’ | DENIED: Opseth’s penalty is straight down the middle which Birighitti manages to keep out with his foot.

RO UND 7 PRE V I E W FOR ME IT’S FRESH BUT I KNOW IT’S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GAMES IN THE LEAGUE FOR ADELAIDE AND FOR VICTORY.

Gertjan Verbeek insists Melbourne Victory is a better team than the table suggests and is fully aware of what this fixture means for Reds supporters.

Adelaide hosts bitter rivals Melbourne at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night in what is always a highly anticipated encounter. The Reds come into the match on a three-match winning streak, while Victory are winless in their previous three games and suffered a 2-1 loss to Sydney FC last round. Adelaide produced a scintillating display to dismantle Central Coast Mariners 3-1 in their most recent outing. Verbeek said he is obviously new to this particularly rivalry but knows how important these types of matches are for the fans.

“When they’ve the ball they’re very accurate and play the ball around with a lot of confidence. “They’ve been a little bit unlucky, they’ve had a lot of injuries but have less points than us but sometimes you’re a little bit unlucky in the games. “So I think the points they have is not how strong Victory is. I think it’s a good team and even now they’re getting some important players back and are getting fitter and fitter.” Verbeek was confident the Reds could continue to build their momentum on the back of four successive triumphs in all competitions, regardless of being unable to settle on consistent starting XI to start the season. The Dutchman confirmed Al Hassan Toure is back from international duty but will likely start proceedings from the bench, while Ben Halloran is out with a hip complaint.

“For me it’s fresh but I know it’s one of the most important games in the league for Adelaide and for Victory,” Verbeek told reporters at a press conference.

“When I see our last game, I think a lot of things were good,” he continued.

“Of course, I’ve played a lot games in Europe also, the derby for the fans is very important and there’s always something special about these games.

“Some things we can improve but we’re still improving and every game seems to be a little bit better, even though we haven’t played twice (in a row) with the same team.

“I’m curious about what’s going to happen tomorrow, I heard the ticket sales are going well and we hope we have our 12th man in the stadium that will help us to win the game.”

“Every time we’ve had to change. Louis (D’Arrigo) has been gone, (Al Hassan) Toure has been gone and now Ben Halloran has an injury.

Despite Victory’s struggles, Verbeek said their position in the table is not reflective of their quality.

“But I’m confident the guys know what to do and of course the B team is not Melbourne Victory but they tried to play like them and I think we’ve solved some problems we can expect.”

The visitors lie eighth on the ladder with five points. “They’re organised,” he said when asked to give his assessment on Kurz’s side. “They play very compact and get in the transition as fast as possible, a lot of people behind the ball.

OP S E TH R EL I SH I NG ORIG I N AL R I VAL RY CON TE ST Kristian Opseth says he was relieved to finally open his goal-scoring account with Adelaide United in Saturday's 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners. Adelaide’s attention now turns to Melbourne Victory at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night.

Troisi spent four years at Victory over two spells, while Kurz was the Reds boss for two seasons.

Gertjan Verbeek’s side fell behind early before scoring three well-orchestrated goals.

Opseth revealed he is aware of the enormity of the fixture and was looking forward to the occasion.

Opseth anticipated a tight contest despite Victory’s inconsistent form and hoped the fact Kurz was the coach of Adelaide for the last two years could prove somewhat advantageous.

However, the 29-year-old was disappointed he was unable to bury the Mariners after seeing a 60th minute penalty saved.

Adding to the level of spice is the fact that James Troisi and Marco Kurz have moved in the opposite direction.

The Norwegian striker scored the Reds’ third of the afternoon after clinically dispatching Ben Halloran’s low cross into the roof of the net with a first-time finish.

TROISI DISCUSSES FACING HIS FORMER SIDE Adelaide United midfielder, James Troisi, believes Saturday night's instalment of the Original Rivalry will have a little extra spice given the additional subplots. Troisi will line-up against his former team for the first time since departing Melbourne Victory in May, while ex-United Marco Kurz will be in the opposition dug out.

Troisi stated there were a number of factors that have made the rivalry special, which has added to the passion shared amongst supporters.

The 31-year-old said he was really looking forward to Saturday night’s contest at Coopers Stadium.

However, he warned that despite their slow start to the campaign they cannot afford to be complacent.

G A LL ANT RED S L O S E TO RE I G NING C H A MP IO N S Adelaide United Women have suffered a second successive loss after suffering a 1-0 defeat to defending champions Sydney FC Women at Marden Sports Complex on Friday night. The Reds dominated the match for large spells and had several opportunities to find an equaliser, but Caitlin Foord’s 57th minute finish proved decisive. New signing Lais Araujo was one of two changes made to the starting XI by Head Coach, Ivan Karlović. The Brazilian was deployed in attacking midfield, while Emily Hodgson featured at rightback ahead of Charlotte Grant. It was an entertaining first-half with chances aplenty at both ends of the pitch. Mallory Weber was dangerous throughout the opening 45 minutes creating all sorts of issues for the Sydney defence with her trickery and ability to take players on.

register a shot on target when Sofia Huerta had an effort saved by Sarah Willacy. Mary Fowler then saw a powerful, low strike saved before United had their best chance moments later. Isabel Hodgson was released by Araujo before running through on goal but her attempt was saved by Aubrey Bledsoe. Approaching half-time, Adelaide were thwarted by the crossbar as I. Hodgson’s desperate effort ricocheted off the woodwork after lunging in to meet Weber’s cross after another splendid run. Weber hit the side-netting eight minutes into the second-half after cutting inside and unleashing a venomous strike. But it was the visitors that opened the scoring when Logarzo disguised a pass into the path of Foord, who finished beyond Willacy. Princes Ibini-Isei struck the base of the post with a decent long-range effort. Adelaide pushed players forward in search of an equaliser, however they could not find a way past Bledsoe.
