Fishing  for  trout in  the  high  desert When  I  think  of  Oregon  and  the  3DFL¿F 1RUWKZHVW , XVXDOO\ KDYH LQ mind  more  coastal  areas.  All  but  one  of  my  previous  visits  to  Washington  or  Oregon  have  been  to  the  western  side  of  the  Cascade  Mountains:  to  6HDWWOH 3RUWODQG WKH :LOODPHWWH 9DO- OH\ RU WR VRPH OLWWOH FLW\ DORQJ WKH Oregon  coast.  And  the  thick  forests  in  those  areas  are  among  the  few  places  I  have  vis- ited  in  the  lower  48  states  that  might  be  even  greener  than  our  Green  Mountain  State.  Maybe  because  they  are  wetter.  Although  Portland  has  only  a  slight  edge  over  Middlebury  in  average  annual  UDLQIDOO ZLWK inches  per  year  compared  to  our  LW IDU VXUSDVV- es  Vermont  in  number  of  rainy  days.  Portland  comes  in  third  among  all  cities  in  the  United  States  with  an  average  of  164  rainy  days  per  year.  Seattle  comes  in  sixth  with  149.  :KLFK LV ZK\ WKLV SDVW ZHHNHQG ZKHQ , WRRN D ÀRDW WULS GRZQ 2UH- JRQ¶V 'HVFKXWHV 5LYHU , ZDV D OLWWOH VXUSULVHG WR ¿QG P\VHOI LQ WKH PLGVW of  high  desert  country  averaging  a  mere  nine  inches  per  year  of  rain.  I  had  departed  from  Seattle  late  Friday  evening  after  giving  a  talk  DW DQ HGXFDWLRQ FRQIHUHQFH KRSSHG LQ D UHQWDO FDU DQG VWDUWHG GULYLQJ southeast  across  the  Columbia  River  and  into  the  small  town  of  Maupin.  I  arrived  at  2  a.m.  at  a  hotel  where  three  friends  were  waiting  for  me.  3KLO KDG SUHYLRXVO\ ¿VKHG ZLWK PH for  a  few  days  in  New  Mexico  and  Oregon.  He  brought  along  his  adult  son  Paul.  Rounding  out  the  trip  was  5LFK :DUUHQ D ORQJWLPH IULHQG IURP Starksboro  I  got  to  know  through  the  New  Haven  River  Anglers  Associa- WLRQ +H¶G DOVR EHHQ ¿VKLQJ ZLWK PH in  Oregon  and  Maine.  He  is  a  very  knowledgeable  trout  angler.  I  was  also  counting  on  him  to  provide  hu- mor  for  the  trip.  (See  Dickerson,  Page  4B)
