“The Addis International Film Festival brings to Addis Ababa and major cities of Ethiopia some of the best local and international documentary films and filmmakers.

This year, we again plan to screen over 60 thought-provoking, entertaining and unforgettable films set across screens at the Italian Cultural Institute, Vamdas Entertainment, Hager Fiker Theater and National Archives and Library Agency (Wemezekir) . The Festival is dedicated to showcasing films made by young Ethiopian filmmakers.

As a non-profit organization, Initiative Africa relies on you to help bring the festival to life by making contributions, sponsoring and providing in-kind services and materials.

The Organizers “A very warm welcome to the Addis International Film Festival (AIFF), a well-established and renowned documentary film festival in Africa - where in this 12th Edition - we present 60 critically-acclaimed documentaries from across the globe.

Since its first edition in 2007, the AIFF has brought together film enthusiasts, professionals, students, families and others to view a variety of documentary films on socially responsible themes. This year again, we have continued with issues related to refugees, migration and displacement to learn about what is happening in the world. The AIFF program also includes lectures and presentations by film industry professionals, as a space in which documentary filmmakers and activists share the experience with their younger colleagues and with each other.

AIFF is supported by local and international partner organizations - the U.S. Embassy, the Italian Cultural Institute, Hager Fiker Theater, the European Commission Civil Society Fund and the Austrian Development Agency, with whom we have a long close cooperation. 1958 - The Year The World Discovered Brazil Director: José Carlos Asbeg Production: Brazil, 2008 Running: 85 min Synopsis: On June 29, 1958, Brazil defeats host nation Sweden 5-2 to win its first Soccer World Cup. Apart from introducing to the world the legendary team with Pelé, Garrincha and Didi, the title was a landmark in the nation’s self esteem. Brazilians were not only proud of the victory but were totally overtaken by a sudden feeling they had never experienced before due to the traumatic defeat to Uruguay at the 1950 final match at Maracana. The film pays homage to the greatest heroes of Brazilian soccer.

21 x New York Director: Piotr Stasik Production: Poland 2016 Running: 70 min Synopsis: “21 x New York” is an intimate portrait of the city and its people. We meet the characters in the NYC subway and we follow them to the surface finding out about their lives, cravings, passions, hopes and dreams - sometimes lost and sometimes still waiting to be fulfilled. What comes out of it is an emotional tale of solitude that haunts us in 21st century western world.

3 Stolen Cameras Director: Equipe Media & RĂĽfilm Filmmakers Collective Production: Sweden, 2017 Running: 17 min Synopsis: The members of video activist group Equipe Media, from Western Sahara, fight to keep their cameras. This is a story about breaking an absolute censorship with unique footage from an area where the Moroccan authorities have managed to implement a near total media blockade.

Giant media conglomerates are increasingly reluctant to investigate or criticize government policies, particularly on defense, security and intelligence issues. They are ceding responsibility for holding governments and corporations accountable to the independent journalists and filmmakers who risk their careers, their freedom and their lives in war zones to expose the truth. With government deception rampant, independent voices are crucially important.

“It’s Simple, We do as we are told” This disconcerting reply comes from a Swedish employment office employee when asked how the country’s most unpopular government agency works. To assure the anonymity of the interviewees, they’re all represented by cardboard puppets. Thanks to visible puppeteers, expressive eyes and recognizable gestures, these puppets quickly take on the appearance of real people. The result is a fascinating, comical and artistic study of human strategies to get along in an irrational bureaucracy.

Ask The Sexpert Director: Vaishali Sinha Production: USA, 2017 Running: 83 min Synopsis: ASK THE SEXPERT is a feature length documentary about a highly popular 93—year old sex advice columnist, Dr. Watsa, who writes for a daily newspaper in Mumbai.

Despite sex being a taboo topic in that country, the column’s brand of non-moralistic advice and humor has emboldened many to write in with their questions, the vast majority of whom seek basic information.

The columnist gains popularity even while a ban on comprehensive sex education in schools is adopted by approximately one third of India’s states.Director Vaishali Sinha brilliantly captures Dr. Watsa’s treasured personality with compassion and humor.

After five years in Paris, Arash has decided to return home to Iran, but his fellow Iranian natives Hossein and Ashkan convince him to take one last trip through the South of France. As the best friends drive, drink lots of beer, and meet a pair of female French musicians, the trio experience the thrill of a road trip imbued with a wistful longing for home.

This artfully photographed nonfiction comedy beautifully captures the expat experience.

Black Women In Medicine Director: Â Crystal R. Emery Production: USA, 2016 Running: 66 min Synopsis: Black Women in Medicine is the first documentary to explore the history, contemporary issues and future possibilities of African-American women physicians by featuring the diverse voices of young medical students, practicing physicians and elder trailblazers. They all share intimate stories of what it means to be a Black woman doctor in America. Currently, 4.5% of physicians in the U.S. are Black, and less than 2% are black women. The women featured in the film have saved countless lives despite being plagued by a professional and societal uphill battle stemming from both their gender and skin color. The film includes rarely seen documentation of Black women performing critical operations, as well as indepth original interviews with Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the first black Surgeon General of the U.S., and Surgeon General Regina Benjamin.

‘BURKINABÈ Rising Director: Lara Lee Production: Burkina Faso, 2018 Running: 71 min Synopsis: A small landlocked country in West Africa, Burkina Faso is home to a vibrant community of artists, musicians, engaged citizens who carry on the revolutionary spirit of Thomas Sankara, killed in a coup d’état led by his best friend and advisor Blaise Compaoré, who then ruled the country as an autocrat for 27 years, till a massive popular insurrection led to his removal. Today, the spirit of resistance and political change is mightier than ever and it permeates every aspect of the Burkinabe life. It is an inspiration, not only to Africa, but to the rest of the world.

Grab And Run Director: Roser Corella Production: Kyrgyzstan, 2017 Running: 87 min Synopsis: Since Kyrgyzstan gained its Independence in 1991, there has been a revival of the ancient practice of Ala-Kachuu, which translates roughly as “grab and run”. More than half Kyrgyz women are married after being kidnapped by the men who become their husbands. Some escaped after violent ordeals, but most are persuaded to stay by tradition and fear of scandal. Although the practice is said to have its root in nomadic customs, the tradition remains at odds with modern Kyrgyzstan. Ala-Kachuu was outlawed during Soviet era and remains illegal under the kyrgyz criminal code, but the law has rarely been enforced to protect women from this violent practice.

Heiress of The Wind Director: Gloria Carrión, Fonseca Nicaragua Production: Nicaragua, 2017 Running: 88 min Synopsis: In 1979 Nicaragua, a dictatorship that lasted decades has been overthrown and the revolutionary Sandinistas have taken over. As far as young Gloria is concerned, they are superheroes—particularly as her parents are on the front line of the coup and subsequent civil war. But the revolution takes its toll—her parents’ dedication to the cause means they have little time for their children. Years later, their adult daughter turns to the camera as she touches on painful subjects relating to her parents. This results in candid, searing discussions about torture, tragic deaths, doubt, disillusionment and parenting, which always took second place to the greater good.

The mothers of pre-teens Merlijn and Sil are doing voluntary work on Lesbos, where thousands of refugees have become stranded, crossing over from Turkey in unseaworthy boats. During their school vacation, the boys really want to see how the refugees are coping with their own eyes, especially the ones that are their age. They discuss what it might be like and practice with a translation app, learning how to say things like “peanut butter sandwiches are really tasty” in Arabic or Farsi. Once there, they’re shocked by the circumstances they find. Merlijn and Sil see the rubber boat graveyard and meet families crammed together in temporary shelters. They get along particularly well with a group of Syrian boys. The Dutch boys drink tea with them, build campfires and have snowball fights.

Horn Please Director: Â Reza Farahmand Production: Iran, 2017 Running: 52 min Synopsis: Only 8 percent of recorded history of human civilization has been in peace, the rest was filled with bloodshed and destruction of war. Myanmar is home to variety of racial and religious minorities. During the ages these people together have amassed a considerable cultural heritage, but in the last few decades the ruling junta has pitted ethnic groups against each other. During the ensuing conflicts communities were raised to the ground and many were forced from their homes. Some of the displaced were denied their identities. This is the tale of those people set in a new Delhi refugee camp, in 2012.

Mother of three children, to provide for their livelihood in 2000, agrees to be a courier for drug traffickers. Discovered and arrested, he ends up in prison: after three years he leaves but can not return to his family or get a residence permit in Italy. He stops in Campania, at Castel Volturno, in a purgatory that seems to never end. Always close to the issues of migrants and those who live far from their homeland, Andrea Segre makes a documentary that starts from a life, that of Ibi, to trace an exemplary path of the ordeal lived by every poor man forced to travel the world to survive.

Director: Aljona Surzhikova Production: Estonia, 2018 Running: 28 min Synopsis: Kerro 40 is a story about unique cultural heritage which already 40 years takes place in Estonian countryside called Käru. It is a community based regular events which organized during a year starting from September till May. The core of those activities is classical dance culture and Estonian traditional folklore. Documentary’s Kerro 40 author Aljona Surzhikova follows representatives of 3 different generations which actively participate in organization those events and popularization of a strong tradition among younger inhabitants in and outside of Käru community.

Kolonko Director: AdvocAid SL Production: Sierra Leone, 2017 Running: 15 min Synopsis: Kolonko’ is the Krio-language term for a sex worker and its derogatory nature reflects the social and economic marginalisation of sex workers face. In the documentary, women discuss the sexual, physical, and verbal abuse they endure on a daily basis at the hands of their clients and the police. In interviews with 18 women, they make a plea to the government, the police, and the public: to accept them as citizens who have rights – over their bodies and to be free from violence.

But then all of a sudden everything changed. The inhabitants of a large peninsula unexpectedly found themselves belonging to a different country. A new national flag was hoisted.

Some soldiers are leaving the peninsula, while others are swearing allegiance to the new government.

Nowhere to Hide Director: Zaradasht Ahmed Production: Norway-Sweden-Finland-Netherlands-USA-Iraq, 2016 Running: 126 min Synopsis:” Nowhere to Hide” follows a man - the medic and father Nori Sharif - through 5 years of dramatic change in the wartorn Diyala-province; one of the most dangerous provinces in the middle of Iraq. From the time of the American retreat to the fall of Nori’s home town, we follow him filming stories of survivors. In a world trapped between ISIS and the different Iraqi Militias, his integrity and humanitarian vision is the only thing that drives him to continue against all odds. Even when, as last man standing, he is forced to turn the camera towards himself.

Director: Rand Beiruty Production: Germany 2018 Running: 20 min Synopsis: Nudar is a Syrian woman who came to Germany in order to pursue her career as a doctor. Recognizing her strength, the filmmaker, Rand, decides to present her with some power in the form of a camera so she can film whatever she wants. Consequently, Nudar turns the camera on Rand.

And so the film takes the form of a conversation between the two women.

Owsia Director: Alireza Dehghan Production: Iran, 2016 Running: 30 min Synopsis: 2500-year-old aqueduct of Qanate near Yazd (Sarkh) is considered an environmental UNESCO world heritage.

Through intimate, action-driven storytelling, She Started It explores the ciltural roots of female ender representation in entrepreneurship- including pervasive self-doubt, fear of failure, and risk aversion among young women.

His Dutch father, Joop Hoek, has no doubt in his mind that if his Dutch-Indonesian father had not abandoned him he would have grown up to be a different person. In The Bastard two separate stories of an adult child and an elderly father are inextricably intertwined. Together they tell a harrowing tale about fate and DNA and about how the lack of a father influenced these lives.

In 1965 Italian film-maker GilloPontecorvo shot a film reconstituting the events of the Battle of Algiers (1956/1957). Banned in France until 1971, the film took on mythical status in Algeria, where it was screened each year on television to commemorate the country’s independence. In 2003, during the military operations in Iraq, the film was shown to U.S. officers as an example of a successful struggle against urban terrorism.With exceptional archive materials and many interviews (Algeria, France, Italy, United-States) this documentary will give us, sixty years after, a strong look back at this film halfway between history and legend.

The If Project Director:  Kathlyn Horan Production: USA, 2016 Running: 88 min Synopsis: The If Project is a feature length documentary that follows a group of inmates incarcerated in a maximum security women’s prison who are part of a writing workshop co-created by a Seattle police detective and a repeat offender serving a nine-year sentence. The writing workshop provides access to an emotional depth and intimacy we are not often afforded with those behind bars. We journey with them as they take a brutally honest look into their past and work to explore, often for the first time, what exactly led them to prison. These stories serve as a launching off point to follow three of the women in the program as they are released, reunited with their families and faced with life on the outside.

Director: Sabaah Folayan Production: USA 2017 Running: 102 min Synopsis: After a white police officer shot and killed the unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the mainstream media were quick to frame the resulting protests as riots. This gripping reconstruction of the events after the shooting plainly chooses the perspective of the black community—sometimes literally by using the film material and Twitter messages of witnesses and participants. The result is a very different kind of story. Suddenly, you feel the frustration of the black residents as they talk about racism and police violence.

The demonstrators wanted answers and to express their sadness and anger, only to face an aggressive and repressive response.
