INSIDE TODAY! Saturday - Sunday, June 13-14,
CATSKILL — The continuing pandemic will not dampen the spirits of village residents who plan to celebrate gay pride in August. Pride festivities traditionally held in June were canceled or postponed due to COVID-19. A group of village residents announced plans Wednesday to hold a pride parade Aug. 1. “We want everyone to feel welcome,” organizer Elliot Matos said. “It’s an LGBTAplus event. The slogan is Hope for Humanity. We want everyone to have hope with these trying times we’re in,
with COVID and the racial tensions.” Matos organized a Diversity March in the village in March and hopes the pride event will also shed light on the diversity in the community, he said. “We thought it would be nice to get the community out together, keeping social distance and recognizing we are a diverse group of people,” Matos said. “And everyone loves rainbows, so why not?” Matos and Michele Delage, owner of Winkle’s Bakery, presented the idea to the village board on Wednesday. publicizing law enforcement personnel records. The governor signed the executive order, named the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative, mandating all of the state’s roughly 500 law enforcement agencies, including the New York Police Department, to
publicly meet with people in their communities and reinvent policing strategies. Each police force statewide must develop a plan by April 1, 2021 — the state’s next budget deadline - to be eligible for state funding. The municipality that oversees the law enforcement agency must certify and adopt
and enforce the plan as a local law. “The protest taking place throughout the nation and in communities across New York in response to the murder of George Floyd illustrate the loss of community confidence in our local police agencies - a reality that has been fueled by
our country’s history of policeinvolved deaths of black and brown people,” Cuomo said Friday during a coronavirus briefing at his Manhattan office. “Our law enforcement officers are essential to ensuring public safety - they literally See CUOMO A8
Two seek opportunity to challenge Delgado By Raymond Pignone Columbia-Greene Media
Registered Republicans in the 19th Congressional District will begin casting ballots in early voting Saturday in a primary between Ola Hawatmeh and Kyle Van De Water for the opportunity to challenge Democratic incumbent Antonio Delgado of Rhinebeck. The official primary day is June 23.
OLA HAWATMEH Hawatmeh, 42, is the mother of three sons. She lives in Pleasant Valley and is the daughter of Christian immigrants from Jordan. Hawatmeh is a business owner, fashion designer and
philanthropist. She has been recognized as one of the area’s top local female business owners. She founded Ola her first comHawatmeh pany, Mom Me Makeover, in 2004, and established her fashion design company Ola Style in 2018. Hawatmeh is a graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, where she received a degree in communications. She began her career as a production assistant with Fox TV and worked in marketing at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Museum in Hyde Park.
The U.S. economy can withstand the COVID-19 pandemic and return to full strength, Hawatmeh said. She supports the tax and regulatory reform passed by the Republican majority in the Senate. She pledged to oppose all attempts to raise taxes. She supports President Donald Trump’s plan to build a border wall to control immigration and is calling for an end to sanctuary cities. Hawatmeh is pro-life and strongly opposes gun control. On national security, she is committed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons in Iran and North Korea, defending U.S. interests in Asia, combating Russian aggression and stopping election interference
by all foreign nations. She supports ongoing efforts to reform the Veterans Administration health care Kyle system and Van De Water job training that connects veterans with employers. Hawatmeh disagrees with the lengthy lockdowns and business closings in New York state and the nation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We should have had only the first month in quarantine,” she said. “Shutting down the country wasn’t necessary. We should have gotten the
economy started sooner and opened up the country.” She criticized Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the COVID outbreak in nursing homes. “He gave an order to send residents back to nursing homes,” she said. “Weeks later there were so many deaths. That was a bad move.” Hawatmeh condemned the death of George Floyd and the rioting and destruction that followed, but said nationwide reform laws unfairly cast all police officers as criminals. “My slogan is: ‘Let’s not defund. Let’s defend,’ she said. “We can’t have other police officers punished for the actions of a few. Not all police officers See CHALLENGE A8
