Gaus, 62, of Athens, was charged with three counts of second-degree forgery of a deed/will/contract and two counts of second-degree forgery of a public record, both class D felonies, first-degree falsifying business records and two counts of issuing a false certificate, both class E felonies, fifth-degree life settlement fraud and two counts of official

misconduct of a public servant, both class A misdemeanors. On Jan. 16 state police received a forgery complaint involving a funeral conducted in December 2019 by Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home in Catskill, according to state police. An investigation revealed that a forged signature on a document resulted in a life insurance
payment going directly to the funeral home to cover the funeral costs, instead of to the beneficiary, according to state police. Gaus is scheduled to appear in court March 12. Gaus has been the licensed manager of Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home since May 2013, according to the funeral home’s website. A 1977 graduate of SUNY
Farmingdale, Gaus has worked at the funeral home since May 2013, according to its website. A man who answered the phone at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home on Friday morning did not give his name and declined to comment on the arrest. Gaus ran for county coroner with Joshua Lipsman in 2018. Lipsman had no knowledge
of the arrest on Friday morning. “We ran together but other than that we don’t have a lot in common,” Lipsman said. Lipsman was surprised by the news. “Bob is a very popular and social person,” Lipsman said. “This news will come as a shock not just to me but to many others.” Democratic Chairwoman Carolyn Riggs said she was unaware of the arrest Friday morning. Gaus is active in many local organizations, according to the funeral home’s website, See CHARGED A2

Local officials are concerned that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed budget amendment to overhaul the permitting process for solar
farms will leave them out of the picture. The amendment, announced Feb. 21, would create a new Office of Renewable Energy Permitting, replacing the current Siting Board process
known as Article 10. This could accelerate the development of solar farms across Greene and Columbia counties, including Hecate Energy’s proposed 700-acre facility in Copake and the Flint
Mine solar project in Coxsackie. Under the Article 10 review process, each project’s review board includes two local representatives appointed by their communities.
But those local representatives would be eliminated in the proposed permitting process, instead leaving decisions to the new office, which would See SOLAR A2
