Larry Gardner, D-Hunter, said. “They are asking for it to go from a four-car system to a five-car system. The car will move as part of that system.” Luvera read comments from Greene County Emergency Services Board of Directors President Mark Evans. “[Evans] said it was a decision based on emotion rather than on call volume or response time,” Luvera said. “There are no facts to support the addition of the truck.” “The only thing I can point to, to justify another truck, is reducing response time,” Evans said at the same March meeting. The response time for the three vehicles stationed in the valley is nine minutes, Evans

Winter is arriving early this year. After the Twin Counties see the first snow of the season late Thursday into Friday, a cold front will make its way into the region and may be followed by more snow early next week, according to meteorologists. Rain on Thursday was expected to turn into snow around sunset and continue into early Friday morning. “We have a cold front that will be approaching from the north this afternoon,” meteorologist Kevin Lipton with the National Weather Service Albany said Thursday. Light snow was expected to stop around midnight, making way for below-normal temperatures for the next few days. “We are not expecting a lot of accumulation, maybe a coating to a quarter of an inch, mostly on grassy areas and cars,” Lipton said. “After the precipitation ends, temperatures overnight will drop and should be in the mid-20s by morning.” Snow accumulation in higher elevations, such as those in western Greene County and eastern Columbia County, could be several inches, but most of the Twin Counties will see a dusting. Though the snow is expected to end around midnight, the below-freezing temperatures following the precipitation could lead to a tricky commute Friday morning. “Even though there will be minimal snow, roads can freeze up and there may be slippery spots on the road for the morning commute,” Lipton said. Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged New Yorkers to get ready for potentially hazardous driving

CATSKILL — A request for a second flycar on the mountaintop was heeded Wednesday night. Although the resolution must go through the Finance Committee and then the full Greene County Legislature, it successfully passed the Health Services Committee in a 6-3 vote. A flycar is a paramedic vehicle that preps patients for transport prior to the arrival of an ambulance. Mountaintop officials have requested a second vehicle for the flycar system to improve response times in the area. Legislators Patricia Handel, R-Durham, Gregory Davis, R-Greenville, Ed Bloomer,

They are asking for it to go from a four-car system to a five-car system. The car will move as part of that system.

R-Athens, Patrick Linger, RNew Baltimore, Harry Lennon, D-Cairo and Jack Keller, R-Catskill voted in favor of the resolution. Legislator Matthew Luvera, R-Catskill, opposed the resolution. Legislators Thomas Hobart, R-Coxsackie, and William Lawrence, R-Cairo, were absent. Hunter Town Supervisor Daryl Legg was pleased with the outcome, he said Thursday.

“It went as I expected,” he said. “I knew that Matt Luvera and Mike Bulich weren’t going to support it. I was happy that the rest of the legislators see the need for the flycar and its value to the county as a whole.” Bulich, R-Catskill, suggested at the meeting that the mountaintop towns pay for the car and dedicate it to the mountaintop. “That’s not what the proposal is,” Legislator

As walls rise, new jail takes shape By Sarah Trafton Columbia-Greene Media

CATSKILL — The jail project is official going vertical, Bruce Haeussler with The Pike Company said Wednesday. Haeussler updated the Greene County Legislature on the construction project during the Public Safety Committee meeting. The 80-cell, 64-bed jail is expected to begin accepting inmates in July 2021. The project is funded by a $39 million bond from Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. at 2.49% interest and an $8.1 million contribution from the county. “We will start to enclose the building next week,” Haeussler said. Crews have begun erecting steel and Haeussler expects

the main part of the building will be complete by Dec. 15. “We will start doing the roof in the middle of December,” he said. Electric lines are in, and Haeussler said he expects the facility will have gas by the end of the year. “We will start pouring slab the beginning of Thanksgiving week,” he said. Legislator Gregory Davis, R-Greenville, asked where the construction companies source the workers from. Primarily, the construction companies try to work with local union employees, Haeussler said. “How many workers are local?” Davis wanted to know. Haeussler estimated about Contributed photo
