would be no more. Resale values rose, matched only by the Franklin Mint’s revenue and stock price.

Subsidiaries opened in Canada, France and Great Britain, and the company’s clients included the White House Historical Association, the United Nations, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

By 1972, the Franklin Mint had annual sales of $75 million. Company stock originally offered at $6 a share was worth more than $430 within a few years. Segel, who never collected coins himself, became a multimillionaire before stepping down from his leadership role at the company in 1973. (Since then, the Franklin Mint has changed hands several times.)

After other business ventures saw varying degrees of success, Segel founded the QVC network in 1986, with headquarters in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He had seen a cable program presented by the Home Shopping Network - “I thought it was horrible,” he said - and decided he could do a better job.

He raised millions of dollars, hired television executives and made deals, largely with the Comcast cable network, to carry QVC programming. (QVC stood for “quality, value and convenience.”)

His son said he issued detailed memos about QVC’s programming, signed “Chief Nitpicker.” Segel emphasized that QVC presenters should explain their

products’ utility and value and should shy away from loud, abrasive selling practices. Shipping would be prompt, and there would be no hidden charges.

QVC’s first broadcasts were carried on 58 cable systems, reaching about 7 million people, then quickly expanded. The company had $112 million in sales in its first year.

In a crowded field, QVC became TV’s No. 3 homeshopping destination, after Home Shopping Network (HSN) and Cable Value Network (CVN). In 1989, Segel engineered a deal in which QVC bought the larger CVN for about $380 million - once likened to a snake swallowing an elephant — then replaced CVN’s programming with QVC’s.

In 1991, QVC launched a new network dedicated to fashion, and the company’s annual sales reached $1 billion, putting it on almost equal footing with HSN. QVC was sold two years after Segel left as chief executive in 1993. (QVC and HSN are now owned by the Qurate Retail Group.)

Joseph Myron Segel was born Jan. 9, 1931, in Philadelphia. His father had a small real estate business, his mother was a homemaker and community activist.

Segel was 13 when he formed his first company, a printing and advertising business in his family’s basement. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951, then dropped out of the university’s Wharton

Joseph Segel, the founder of two well-known companies that became entrenched presences in many households, the Franklin Mint, which made and distributed commemorative medals, and the QVC home-shopping network, died Dec. 21 at a nursing facility in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. He was 88.

The cause was congestive heart failure, said a son, Alan Segel.

Segel was a “serial entrepreneur,” his son said, who began his career in printing and advertising and went on to launch more than 20 companies. He founded the Franklin Mint in 1964 after observing public demand for old silver dollars.

With his new company — originally called the National Commemorative Society — Segel sold limited-edition coins and other objects, often made of precious metals.

He began with a commemorative medal honoring Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

After some initial stumbles in manufacturing, the idea began to catch on with the public, much to Segel’s surprise.

“I saw the main business as a clearing house for foreign coins, and the selling of collecting accessories,” he told The Washington Post in 1972.

“It grew much faster than we expected.”

He hired the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint to design coin-like medals — including a complete set of U.S. presidents — and changed the company’s name to the Franklin Mint. He opened a manufacturing plant outside Philadelphia that soon became the largest privately owned mint in the world. It was the only private mint in the United States that produced coins for foreign governments.

By advertising in magazines and the Sunday supplements of newspapers, the Franklin Mint became a household name. More than 500,000 people subscribed to its monthly magazine, which announced forthcoming coins, medals, silver spoons, plates and other materials.

Each commemorative item was produced in limited quantities: For instance, after a series of coins made from silver that had been to the moon was minted, there

business school — where he briefly taught — to concentrate on his growing business empire. By 1960, he consolidated several of his printing and advertising companies under the name National Business Services.

In the early 1970s, Segel bought a small Swiss hotel, which he expanded into a resort hotel known as Le Mirador. He sold it in 1990.

His other businesses included an executive jet service and companies to preserve color photographs and evaluate computer software programs. He stayed with QVC as a consultant into his 80s, while launching other businesses, including several connected to beauty and hair care.

Segel lived in Florida for a number of years before returning to the Philadelphia area. He seldom gave interviews, preferring to spend his time looking into business opportunities or tinkering on mechanical projects.

His first marriage, to Renee Segel, ended in divorce.

His wife of 54 years, the former Doris Greenstein, died in 2018. Survivors include a son from his first marriage, Marvin Segel of Manhattan; a son from his second marriage, Alan Segel of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania; a stepdaughter, Sandy Stern of Delray Beach, Florida; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

When he ran the Franklin Mint, Segel made a change in the way the company produced coins and medals. He broke with the tradition of the U.S. Mint, which printed the reverse image on coins upside down.

“We started out with upside down reverses because U.S. coins, and the coins of many other nations, are made that way,” Segel said in 1967. “However, we eventually came to realize that upside down reverses serve no useful purpose, and are a distinct handicap to collectors who keep their specimens in albums.

“So, we are going to break with tradition and campaign for right-side-up reverses throughout the world - for all issues of coins, tokens and medals.”

That campaign did not succeed. U.S. coins are still minted with the reverse image upside down.

Muslim cemetery designated in Hudson

HUDSON — After several decades of traveling outside Columbia County for burials and to visit the graves of deceased loved ones, a section of the Cedar Park Cemetery in the city has been designated for the Muslim community.

Hudson Public Works Superintendent Robert Perry, Mayor Rick Rector, and members of the local mosque, the Hudson Islamic Center, were present last Thursday for the unveiling of 135 plots reserved for the Muslim community located on the north side of the cemetery along Columbia Turnpike in the Cedar Park Cemetery. The city cemetery at 20 Columbia Turnpike is maintained by the city Department of Works.

Conversation about reserving the section began earlier this year after the death of SUNY Polytechnic Institute student and Hudson resident Fardush Sultana, who was buried in Muslim Cemetery in East Greenbush — nearly 40 miles and 45 minutes from Hudson by car.

including 2nd Ward Supervisor Abdus Miah, why there was no section designated for members of the Muslim community.

Mosque leaders met with Perry and Gail Grandinetti, clerk of the city Cemetery Department, to work out a plan.

“We’re very excited to

announce the plans today,” said Rector, who helped designate the new plots.

Before the city’s action, Muslim community members had to travel to East Greenbush or other areas to bury their loved ones.

“I am thankful to the city of Hudson; everyone in my

community is very happy,” 2nd Ward Alderman Dewan Sarowar said. “But now it is close to home. Now people can visit every day if they miss their family so this is actually the perfect spot. Everyone is very happy we got this.”

The mosque and volunteers are hoping to raise more

funds to purchase additional plots in the same part of the cemetery, Miah said. The committee is considering installing signs around the plots to designate the space, Sarowar said.

“It is important because we are one of the largest communities in Hudson,” said Miah, who worked with the city to designate the plots. “We are very grateful to Rob Perry and Mayor Rector and the city. We eventually will buy 300 plots.”

Mosque members raised $68,310 for more than 100 plots entirely through donations from the Muslim community, Miah said. The plots costs about $500 each, Perry said.

The Hudson Islamic Center counts more than 500 members. The Muslim community is one of the fastest growing in Hudson, Miah said.

Members are in the middle of constructing a new, bigger mosque at the corner of Third and Columbia streets.

Columbia County can serve as a Green Light model As the clock ticks toward 2020, the Green Light Law rolled out into reality last week. The Columbia County Department of Motor Vehicles and most other DMVs across the state deserve a big congratulations.

Columbia County at the same time gave us a Christmas gift and ushered in the new year the right way. The Columbia County DMV handled nearly 150 undocumented immigrants applying for learner’s permits or driver’s licenses.

To the best of our knowledge, there were no hints of fraud, no illegal voting and no disturbances in the flow of business. It was, by all accounts, a normal day at the office for everyone. It could not have gone more smoothly if it had been scripted.

Now it’s incumbent upon

Columbia County to become a model for the Green Light Law and demonstrate to other New York counties how it can work effectively and efficiently.

Still, opposition to the law runs high. Three lawsuits were filed by county clerks to challenge Green Light; two of these were tossed out. A coalition of 27 county clerks wrote a letter last week urging the state DMV to postpone the law’s rollout until October 2020, citing concerns about proper training to issue licenses.

Federal elected officials have become involved, writing letters to Gov. Andrew Cuomo to change or reverse the law. And state legislators, most recently state Sen. Daphne Jordan, R-43, have introduced legislation to amend Green Light and protect DMV employees

whether or not they decide to enforce the law.

The mechanism of Green Light seemed easy for the Columbia County DMV staff to understand. The people who staffed the DMV, including Columbia County Sanctuary Movement Executive Director Bryan MacCormack, seemed to have the proper training. Some friendly words and sincere support helped a great deal.

And here we should point out that county clerks take the same oath to uphold the law. So to the clerks who decide not to enforce Green Light, we answer, do your job.

Columbia County’s first day under the Green Light Law appeared to be an unqualified success. The eyes of New York state are upon us.

ANOTHER VIEW

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., might not care about his oath as an impeachment juror or the appearance of unfairness generated if he disallows witnesses or the judgment of history, but he cares very much about keeping his seat and the Republican majority. If he senses that either is at risk, he might think twice about assisting President Donald Trump’s efforts to block witnesses at his impeachment trial. McConnell might even take up some of those “275 bipartisan bills” that have passed the House but still await consideration by the Senate.

McConnell might consult a map and some polling data.

The map will show, according to Jennifer Duffy of the Cook Political Report, that “Democrats appear to have expanded the playing field enough to put Republicans’ majority at risk.”

Duffy writes: “For Republican U.S. Sens.

Martha McSally in Arizona, [Cory] Gardner in Colorado and Susan Collins in Maine, a vote to remove Trump

from office is likely to earn them very credible primary opposition, something that would hurt their reelection efforts. But, a vote to acquit Trump doesn’t help them appeal to the kind of collegeeducated suburban voters they need to win. For these four incumbents, there is no easy answer, making the possibility that there might not even be a Senate trial seem appealing.”

On top of that, Democrats have outspent Republicans “$21.9 million to $10.6 million, according to data provided by Advertising Analytics.” In Maine alone, as much as $55 million will get spent, most on anti-Collins ads.

In short, “It appears that there will be at least five GOP-held seats in play, with a chance that Democrats could add one or two more.

This puts Democrats in a position to win the majority, even if they lose Alabama and/or Michigan. This is not to suggest that Democrats will win the majority, only that their prospects are considerably better today than they were five months ago.”

McConnell might consider how difficult it will be

for moderates such as Collins and Gardner to explain to voters not just voting to acquit Trump but voting to block key witnesses and evidence, which the vast percentage of Americans want to see.

While McConnell is mulling the burden he is putting on his members to participate in the Trump coverup, he might consider some of that legislation passed by the House that he (aka the “Grim Reaper”) buried. In a stack of 400 bills are hugely popular measures, including legislation for expanding background checks, controlling prescription drug costs and guaranteeing equal pay for women. McConnell is not taking up any of them despite their overwhelming popularity.

Background checks garner support from 90% of Americans. On drug pricing, Kaiser Family Foundation polling finds a plurality of independents (47%) think Democrats will do a better job in controlling drug prices, and nearly 90% favor allowing the government to negotiate drug prices, something that is in a House-passed bill.

We are now in that period of the presidential campaign where charges of hypocrisy begin to fly, between candidates and often from the news media as well. It’s an easy story to understand - the candidate said X, but did Y but we don’t often drill down into what it’s supposed to tell us and how much weight we should give it. Let’s begin here, with this Washington Post article about Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., raising money for her two Senate races from rich people: “The events were part of a high-dollar fundraising program that Warren had embraced her entire political career, from her first Senate run in 2011 through her reelection last year. Warren was so successful at it that she was able to transfer $10 million of her Senate cash to help launch her presidential bid.

“But in the past year Warren has undergone a transformation, moving from one of the Democratic Party’s biggest draws at high-dollar fundraisers to a presidential candidate who has sworn them off as sinister attempts to sell access.”

The article documents some of the ways Warren raised money in the past, and as such it’s a useful dive into what politicians need to do to run for office. But now some of her former donors are bitter that she has turned her back on them and declared the entire system to be corrupt - not necessarily that it legalizes outright bribery, but that those who donate expect politicians to at least give them their time and attention.

So if you’re, say, South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg reading that article, you’d say that she’s a hypocrite, attacking others for participating in a system she herself has benefited from.

So let’s think about what that means.

If you think this history seriously undermines Warren’s argument about the corruption of the system, you’re saying one of two things. The first would be that she’s wrong when she says that having to raise money from rich people is inherently problematic, and that’s proven by the fact that she used to do it and

remained uncorrupted. The second would be that her argument is correct, but her previous fund-raising suggests she’s as corrupt as everyone else.

The first of those interpretations is the one Buttigieg or any other of Warren’s opponents would be more comfortable making, since it makes them look better. But when you look at their other decisions, things get complicated.

Let’s take Buttigieg. This past spring, he swore off donations from federal lobbyists, having already pledged not to take money from corporate PACs or the fossil fuel industry. That’s an admission that certain kinds of contributions are inherently problematic, because the people giving them might be looking for some official action in return and you wouldn’t want to give those people your time, let alone be tempted to do things for them.

Yet Buttigieg has gotten more contributions from Wall Street than any other candidate in the race. He would probably argue that there’s nothing wrong with that, because there are some liberals on Wall Street and he’s going to raise their taxes anyway (“The only promise any donor will ever get from Pete is that he’ll use that money to defeat Donald Trump,” a spokesperson said).

You can decide that that’s perfectly reasonable, because unless you’re willing to take money from every planetdefiler or war criminal who shows up with a check, you have to draw a line somewhere (and we should note that the fact that Republicans have no discernible morals when it comes to who they’ll take money from makes things much easier on them).

Or you could decide that it amounts to hair-splitting, and Wall Street money isn’t much better than fossil fuel money, especially since Wall Street lobbyists will absolutely beseech the next president for friendly treatment, as they always do.

We should note that although Buttigieg has been arguing about this with Warren, most of the other candidates (with the notable exception of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders) are on his side of this issue. But what about the

hypocrisy charge?

Warren could certainly say that she did indeed used to be a part of that system, so she knows well how it works but has finally managed to break free of it. And it’s true that there are a limited number of politicians who can do so - it takes a large number of small donors who are devoted enough to keep giving. She took a major risk when she decided not to do high-dollar fundraising events or “call time” (when a candidate calls prospective donors one after another asking for money).

The strategy might be working for her, but it might not have for others, who can’t compete without spending a lot of time schmoozing with rich people.

Which is more hypocritical: saying you won’t take money corporate PACs and then collecting donations from a bunch of Wall Street executives, or saying all high-dollar fundraising is wrong when you used to do it yourself?

When we call someone a hypocrite, we’re saying they can’t be trusted. But it would be hard to argue that Warren isn’t really concerned about corruption, or that if she were elected she’d say, “Aha, fooled you all!” and appoint a bunch of Wall Streeters to run the Treasury Department.

And as I’ve argued before, as a general matter, there’s nothing wrong with flip-flopping.

Once a politician flips - almost always to get themselves more in line with where their party is - they rarely flop back.

Joe Biden flipped on the Hyde Amendment this year, and that was a good thing. If Warren’s current position is the superior one, then you could just say “Well done” and hope other candidates do the same.

But I suspect it’s the moral judgment in what she argues that really grates on her opponents. They believe they have only good motives (since we all believe that about ourselves) and feel they have no choice but to raise money however they can. They’re sure they won’t be corrupted, and don’t like someone claiming they will. Joseph Gonzalez Joseph Gonzalez, 61, of Broome St., Catskill died December 24, 2019.

Stuart Keough Stuart Keough passed away peacefully at his home in Largo, FL on December 11, 2019.

Stuart was born November 25, 1926 at home on Thanksgiving Day in Sunderland Vermont. He was the son of Walter and Amy Grout Keough. He is predeceased by his loving wife Marion Goodermote Keough, his sister Barbara Keough Hill and his brother Austin Keough.

He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He lived most of his adult life in Hillsdale, NY with is loving wife, Marion. After retiring from Co-

Katherine S. Secovnie Katherine S. Secovnie, 91, of Stuyvesant, NY, died Monday, December 23, 2019 at her home.

Born September 17, 1928 in Valatie, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Quandock) Youzwak. Katherine was a Registered Nurse and worked for Columbia Memorial Hospital, Pine Haven Home, Barnwell and the Fireman’s Home. She volunteered for area organizations and cared deeply for her family.

She is survived by two daughters: Diane Gelhorn of Stuyvesant, Cindy Rinders (Rich) of Florida, two sons: Paul

Secovnie of Hudson and Brian Secovnie (Kristin) of New Mexico, one sister: Frances Mackey of Schodack, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, December 27 at the Raymond E Bond Funeral Home, Valatie, NY. Calling hours will be held Friday, December 27 from 12:30 - 1:30 prior to the funeral. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery, Stuyvesant Falls at a later date.

Shirley Haines Poladian It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Haines Poladian would like to announce her passing on Dec. 22nd, 2019.

Shirley Haines Poladian was born in Tannersville NY on May 22nd, 1928 and was a lifelong mountain top resident. She attended and proudly graduated from Hunter Tannersville Central School, worked at The NY Telephone Company and was a long-time member of the Greene County Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and recent great grandmother. Among her favorite things was spending time with all her family, long time family friends Charlie and Jean Blaney and Wanda Powell. She also enjoyed cooking, making holidays and any special occasion memorable. Reading, teaching and helping all the kids with schoolwork and watching

her beloved Yankees.

Shirley will be lovingly missed by her children Harry JR (Lara), Mary Susan Timpson, Andrew (Charlotte), grand children Felicia (Justin) Poskus, Jessica (Jonathan) Wengler, Sarah Timpson, Saleema, Raeghan and Sawyer (Bean) and two great grandchildren Hudson and Ciel. There will be a viewing on Friday Dec 27th with calling hours from 5-8 pm and a service on Saturday dec 28th at 11 am followed by a burial at evergreen cemetery, both services will be held at Aston Basagic Funeral Home in Hunter NY. Mrs. Hildred G. Holmes Mrs. Hildred G. Holmes, age 83, born March 1, 1936 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to the late Matthew and Lorene Whitted, departed this life December 19, 2019 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, New York. Mrs. Holmes received her education in the Bladen County School District, North Carolina.

Early in life she met and married Robert Lee Holmes, Sr., to this union two sons were born, Alton and Robert. She was a dear and devoted wife and mother who cherished the saintly life of family.

Mrs. Holmes a virtuous woman who possesses godly moral character. The attributes she possesses are those that all women should strive for. She was lovingly known as, “Sister”, to family and friends, and

More than 160 flights out of Chicago’s two international airports were canceled on Tuesday morning because of heavy fog, disrupting plans for Christmas Eve travelers.

O’Hare International Airport reported 91 canceled flights as of 1:30 p.m. Chicago time, with average delays of more than half an hour, and Midway International Airport reported 71 cancellations.

A ground stop for arriving flights into Chicago was in effect from about 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., said Lynn Lunsford, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The agency said on Twitter, “Passengers flying through @ fly2ohare and @fly2midway should contact their airline regarding delays due to fog.”

The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory over the Chicago area early Tuesday, saying that the conditions could reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less.

Conditions were a “balmy” 54 degrees with a southeast wind, he said. Midway had an increased visibility of 5 miles, he said, but O’Hare still had poor visibility at a quarter mile.

The FAA also briefly issued a ground stop for flights arriving at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Tuesday morning because of low cloud cover.

Two Wisconsin dogs escaped before being rescued by a bus driver on a cold winter’s night Michael Brice-Saddler The Washington Post

Jamie Grabowski had just finished her bus route in Milwaukee on Dec. 18 when she noticed something peculiar around midnight: two dogs, seemingly unattended, darting in and out of the road.

Cognizant of freezing temperatures in the area that night, Grabowski, a Milwaukee County Transit System driver, decided her trip back to the garage would have to wait. Surveillance video shows her bring the vehicle to a stop before calling out to the two dogs, who stayed closely attached to each other as she beckoned them closer.

“Hey, you two! You need to go home right now,” Grabowski is heard saying in the video. “C’mon, c’mon, c’mon inside!”

Grabowski’s plea was successful. She opened the door and quickly guided her latenight passengers — a pit bull and Doberman pinscher — inside. The two pups explored the bus cabin while Grabowski called authorities and explained her predicament.

“I got them on the bus because I thought they were going to get hit,” she’s heard telling a Milwaukee County Transit System dispatcher before turning to the dogs.

Grabowski, a self-described “dog whisperer,” played with her two new friends until a police officer arrived, according to the transit system, which published her story online as part of a longer series recognizing its employees for “big and small acts of kindness.”

Area Domestic Animal Control Commission, which cares for stray animals. She later learned that the dogs, both about 2 years old, had escaped from their family’s yard nearly three miles from where they were found.

The family was looking for them all night. Grabowski said she was grateful to be in the right place to help the dogs, who could have frozen to death in the 20-degree weather.

In an internal memo, Pentagon leadership has urged military personnel not to take mail-in DNA tests, warning that they create security risks, are unreliable and could negatively affect service members’ careers.

The letter, which was reported by Yahoo News, was sent Friday. It does not name any particular DNA testing companies, but counsels broadly against buying ancestry and health tests promoted with military discounts and other military incentives.

Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, confirmed that the memo had been sent.

“We want to ensure all service members are aware of the risks of Direct to Consumer (DTC) genetic testing,” he

told The New York Times over email.

Over the past decade, millions of Americans have purchased DNA tests through companies such as 23andMe and Ancestry with the hopes of connecting with relatives, finding out more about their family origins and learning about how their DNA could affect their chances of developing certain health conditions.

In recent years, the tests have become popular holiday gifts.

Robertson said that the tests might provide inaccurate results and have negative professional consequences.

“The unintentional discovery of markers that may affect readiness could affect a service member’s career, and the information from DTC genetic testing may disclose this information,” he said.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

— known as GINA — prohibits discrimination by health insurers and employers based on the information that people carry in their genes. It does not apply to members of the military, however.

The memo was written by Joseph D. Kernan, the undersecretary of defense for intelligence, and James N. Stewart, the assistant secretary of defense for manpower. They warn that the tests “could expose personal and genetic information, and potentially create unintended security consequences and increased risk to the joint force and mission.”

In a statement, a spokeswoman from 23andMe said that the company took great care to protect customers’ privacy. An Ancestry spokeswoman said that the company had not targeted military personnel with discounts.

The protesters took to the streets after a period of relative calm in the city.

On Tuesday, thousands of

protesters flooded the Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district and clashed with the police, who launched tear gas and were reported to have fired rubber bullets.

One clash took place outside one of Hong Kong’s most expensive hotels, the Peninsula. Other protests were staged in malls. Video showed a protester leaping

from a balcony at one mall after clashing with the police. They said he was being treated for injuries at a hospital.

For six months, protesters have staged regular demonstrations, some violent, against the central government in Beijing and its efforts to exert control over the semi-autonomous territory.

Honoring veterans throughout the year

PRATTSVILLE — Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Enjoy the reason for the season. Hope some of you were up at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. The sky was crocheted in pink clouds from one horizon to the other. Awe inspiring. Did you notice the days are getting a little longer?

Winter solstice was Dec. 21.

Doris Pasternak is a very proud grandmother. Her grandson from the Stamford area is working towards his Eagle rank in the Boy Scouts and he chose veterans’ support as part of his program. He was tasked with doing research on Jimmy Stewart, the actor and World War II veteran. Both Doris and her grandson were impressed with Stewart’s war history. “He was quite a guy,” were Doris’ words of summation on him. We should all do a bit of reading on the history of those who served and serve today. Think all of them are worthy of a biography. See Nick Cross’s picture and last week’s Scoop. Doris’ grandson has also done some work at VA clinics. Thank you.

Don’t know what Jim Eisel has that others don’t, but a gentleman from Stamford is a weekly shopper at Jim’s Great American. Glen said he and his family were originally from Stamford but moved to Sag Harbor for his wife’s job. She is now retiring so they will soon be moving back to Stamford.

Due to a back ailment Richie is using a motorized scooter and J.J. is learning all the buttons. Grandchildren bring new experiences to your life. Valerie just keeps smiling through all the many chores she has taken on.

Connie and Donnie Lane, Marianne Krauss, Cathy Martino and Ginny Gurley were Christmas shoppers in Oneonta on Friday. They also had a chance to say hello to Bonnie Sutton Holdridge, one-time resident of our area.

Christmas gifts for 50 hospitalized veterans were delivered to the Stratton VAMC on

Monday by faithful volunteers from our area. Many of the familiar faces are no longer there but we were able to start new friendships and pick new favorites. Also, many needy and homeless veterans will now be able to withstand the hardships of winter weather.

Their Christmas will be extended to Jan. 15 when at least six adaptive skiers, veterans from Stratton VAMC Recreation and Therapy Unit, will have their skiing sponsored by the American Legion Virgil E. Deyo Post 1327 and their lunches will be bought by the American Legion Auxiliary Virgil E. Deyo Unit 1327.

Happy birthday to Jane Lane, Janice Cross and Joann Haskin on Dec. 18. On Dec. 29 we send happy birthday wishes to Dorothy Case, way out there in Missouri. My niece, Mary Truesdell May, recently gave me a stack of Hunter-Tannersville Central yearbooks, and I’ve had a great time reading through them.

These are from Ron Truesdell’s collection, a previous board member of HunterTannersville Central. Each graduating class dedicated the CREST yearbook to a person (or persons) who made a significant impact on those students.

1965, THE CREST: Sharon McGuire, editor.

“Mrs. Gladine Colton has always shown us interest and patient understanding in helping us with our problems during our high school career.” For your untiring assistance, we say, “Thank you, Mrs. Colton.”

1951, THE CREST: Helen H. Griffin’s career as an English teacher began in 1927 in the old Hunter High School. She was appointed librarian (along with her teaching duties) in 1930 and appointed Vice-Principal of the Junior-Senior-High School building in 1946. “She sensed and understood the difficulties and frustrations of each student and the trials and tribulations of each teacher. We salute you, Helen Griffin, as a woman of integrity.”

It would be an injustice to speak of the class of 1951 without mentioning the senior class advisor, Miss Mary E. Mahoney. “The success of the senior class activities is traceable to Miss Mahoney’s untiring cooperation and guidance.” (Miss Mahoney is better known as Mary Mc Ginnis (Leach). Mary McGinnis is a retired teacher, a mom, a grandmother, a long-term volunteer, and a friend to everyone).

The village of Hunter annual Christmas tree decorating was held Nov. 30 at Dolan’s Lake in the village. The decorating of Christmas trees began in 2012 with the approval of the village of Hunter trustees and the mayor at the time. Gail Shegerian eventually took over and asked a group of friends to take over decorating each trees. At first the trees lined Route 23A along Main Street. Eventually, the evergreen trees were planted at Dolan’s Lake Park at the entrance of Hunter Mountain Ski area. The evergreen trees were planted and lined the pathway of the park.

Dolan Lake became accessible to walk through and enjoy. Each year, more decorations have been added. With the excitement of decorating each tree, Jan and Jack Schane run white twinkling lights at each light pole along the pathway. This year, on Nov. 30, the Christmas trees were decorated and afterwards, refreshments were served to all the volunteers. Pictured are Bob and Beth Janiszewski with their decorated Christmas tree.

Auxiliary distributes fruit boxes

The Town of Lexington Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary packed and distributed fruit boxes that included lots of cookies and candies and several lovely poinsettia plants to shut-ins on Dec. 19. As always the recipients were very happy to be remembered and enjoyed the visits, too.

The Lexington/West Kill UMC held its annual Christmas party Dec. 22. Wonderful fellowship, and of course, food!

Happy birthday to Maureen McCullar on Dec. 28.

Neil Simon’s ‘Rumors’ comes to The Center for Performing Arts RHINEBECK — A rollicking farce that will warm up audiences this January: Rhinebeck Theater Society presents Neil Simon’s comedy “Rumors,” which runs Jan. 10 through Jan. 19 at the CENTER for Performing Arts, 661 Route 308, Rhinebeck.

One of Simon’s most popular comedies, “Rumors” takes place in the ritzy home of New York’s deputy mayor Charley Brock on the occasion of his 10th anniversary with his wife, Myra. As the guests arrive, they find Charley lying upstairs with a bullet hole in his earlobe, and Myra missing. Mayhem ensues as the friends frantically try to protect themselves and their host from news of the events reaching the outside world. “‘Rumors’ is a hidden gem from one of the most wellknown contemporary playwrights,” said director Michael Juzwak.

Mahaiwe announces January and February movies GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, 14 Castle St., Great Barrington, Massachusetts, will present six films in January and February.

The Mahaiwe will celebrate Ground Hog Day at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 with a screening of Harold Ramis’s “Groundhog Day” (1993, rated PG). Bill Murray is at his wry, wisecracking best in this romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life.

Feb. 14. Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Cher and Best Supporting Actress for Olympia Dukakis, this exuberantly funny film is a tribute to love.

On Feb. 20 at 4 p.m., the Mahaiwe will present “The Great Muppet Caper” (1981, rated G) in which the Muppets travel to London to stop a jewel heist. Jim Henson made his feature film directorial debut with this mystery/musical comedy.

Going to the movies is changing. The number of new releases — that is, the films that once populated both malls and art houses — is declining.

One big reason is Netflix.

Moviegoers don’t have to trek out to their favorite theaters to see big prestige pictures or small art films. They’re on television, convenient and at the push of a button on their remotes. By the same token, theaters are not showing some of these movies.

Why spend a small fortune on long theatrical bookings when the film is heading for television within days of release?

Following are the movies of 2019 that bucked the trend or, in a few cases, took advantage of it: Honeyland. Documentarians set out to make a movie about a beekeeper. What they got instead is an epic tale of spiritualism vs. materialism in an isolated region of Macedonia.

The Souvenir. A young woman and her boyfriend learn that trust, not love, is the true currency of a relationship, and

that no one really knows what is going on in anyone’s mind or heart.

Parasite. A family living in a literal hole in the wall insinuates itself into a family living in a mansion on a hill and takes over their lives. This is a thriller, a comedy and a horror movie rolled into one, and exceptional in every way.

The Irishman. Martin Scorsese’s elegiac farewell to the mob features dynamic performances from Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and, best of all, Joe Pesci, all in the service of a story about the ravages of advancing age and diminishing abilities.

Marriage Story. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are magnificent as a married couple with a young son who loathe one another yet can’t let go of each other. Raw, highly charged and brilliantly directed by Noah Baumbach, who’s been studying his Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen.

Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino’s ninth feature is about movies of the 1960s and two of the men who make them, played by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.

So what if Tarantino changes history. This is a powerful time capsule containing what might have been.

Pain and Glory. Director Pedro Almodovar channels Fellini’s “8 1/2” in the story of an aging director (a marvelous Antonio Banderas) as he battles illness, the ghosts of women is his life and artistic paralysis. Visually, Almodovar is still the best in the business.

Transit. In this compelling thriller, a young writer lives in a modern unnamed fascist society where the police and soldiers are constantly on his tail. Think “The Twilight Zone” meets “Casablanca” via Kafka and you’ll be mesmerized by a story that walls the hero in on all sides.

Ash Is Purest White. The moll of a Chinese mobster takes the rap for him and is imprisoned. When she is released, she finds life has changed for her as well as the gang. Visually striking and told with nuanced power, the story is gripping until the final shot.

Ford v Ferrari. Genius automobile designer Carroll Shelby and fearless race car driver Ken

Miles combine their talents to manufacture a win for workingclass Ford Motor Company over wealthy Italian car maker Ferrari. Matt Damon and Christian Bale make a spectacular team.

Knives Out. Rian Johnson’s clever and stylish murder mystery boasts a stellar cast, a sleuth for our times played cannily by Daniel Craig, a sharp political angle and a superlative labyrinthine plot that would make Agatha Christie blush with admiration.

Bombshell. Beauties bring down a beast in this part-true story about the fall of Fox News chief Roger Ailes amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Incisive and well-cast with an exceptional Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly and John Lithgow as a devilishly predatory Ailes.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (reissue). Before Alec Guinness was Obi-wan Kenobi, he played eight roles — yes, eight — in this seminal British comedy-thriller about an eccentric serial killer on the loose. Seek it out and enjoy.

“We were really concerned about taking care of the trees on public property, such as Main Street and West Bridge Street,” he said.

Catskill’s tree law is not an entirely novel idea.

The law was modeled after a similar ordinance in

Saugerties, Talbott said, adding that Rhinebeck and Athens also offer protection for public trees.

“We started with the Saugerties law and modified it to accommodate Catskill’s needs,” Talbott said.

Residents from other municipalities, such as the town

of Cairo, have reached out to Seeley to find out how to get similar tree programs started, he said.

The trees are a key aspect of the character and aesthetic of the village, Seeley said. In its seven years of operation, the tree program has planted 61 trees throughout the village,

Talbott said.

“For $400, you get the tree, the installation, a one-year guarantee and a plaque to dedicate it to whoever you want,” Talbott said.

The trees are provided by Story’s Nursery.

The group has plans to plant a row of trees along Spring

Street next year, Talbott said, adding that about nine trees have been sponsored for 2020 so far.

“Main Street is almost entirely filled out,” he said. “But there is none too many. It is a great investment in our community.”

On Chatham Road, Tahnee Bickerton stood on her parents’ front porch with her sister, Amy Kneller, and three children. They waved excitedly as Santa drove right by their house, twice.

“We did this when Amy and I were kids,” Bickerton said.

“The whole family got together, Santa came to the house and you got toys.”

One year, Bickerton got a doll.

Every year, their stockings would be filled with knickknacks like a can of soda, an apple or orange, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Sometimes kids get hats and gloves or stuffed animals.

The gifts haven’t changed much over the decades. One of Bickerton’s daughters, 6-yearold Ella, got a doll herself one year. Addi, 8, got books last year.

“But the best part is spending time with your family,” Ella said with a smile on her face.

Down the road, Becky and Shain Smith stood in their front yard with a group of close friends and family, and all of their children. The Smiths have made a tradition themselves out of the parade, inviting the same group over each year.

“It’s nice for all of us to get together, and this is my favorite time of year,” Becky said.

“I think we have some really good candidates,” Aldi said, adding that he expects the positions will be filled soon.

The board will continue to move forward in a positive direction, he said.

“The board is their advocate,” Aldi said of the tenants.

“These are their homes. We want to make sure they are secure, safe and healthy. We have a lot of work ahead of us.

We need board members who are willing to work hard for the tenants.”

Participation from the tenants is also essential, Aldi added.

“I want them to be involved,” he said.

CHATHAM — Cairo-Durham pulled away from a 2424 halftime tie to defeat Chatham, 68-51, in Monday’s Patroon Conference girls basketball game.

The Panthers led 14-10 after one quarter and were up 24-20 late in the second, but the Mustangs knocked down a pair of buckets in the closing second of the half to pull even at the half.

Cairo-Durham went on to outscore Chatham 24-12 in the third quarter and 20-15 in the fourth to earn the victory.

NEW YORK — After eight seasons with the New York Yankees, Dellin Betances is not leaving New York — but he is not returning to the Bronx, either.

The New York Mets on Tuesday signed Betances, a four-time All-Star who had become a free agent, to a one-year deal

to bolster a bullpen that woefully underperformed in 2019.

When the Mets announced the deal, Betances had already changed his Twitter profile picture to one of him wearing a Mets hat and jersey in front of a Christmas tree, and sporting facial hair that would certainly violate the Yankees’ inseason policy.

“I love New York,” Betances said in a

statement issued by the Mets. “I grew up in Manhattan. Went to high school in Brooklyn. Played minor league ball in Staten Island. Made it to the big leagues in the Bronx. Now, I’m excited to go win a World Series with the Mets in Queens.”

Adam Gase has a message for every long-suffering Jets fan, who has endured a lifetime of anguish: He doesn’t care about you.

The Daily News has learned that the embattled head coach has privately told people for months that Gang Green diehards have never mattered to him.

“I’m rich as (expletive)” has become Gase’s go-to line since taking over 11 months ago, according to sources.

Gase has repeatedly said it to anyone that mentions the avalanche of criticism this year.

It has become his defense mechanism.

“He’s an insecure guy,” a Jets source told the News.

It’s a slap in the face to every fan, who has invested their time and money in a poor product for years. The last thing someone supporting this franchise needs to hear is the head coach boasting about his bloated bank account.

Gase also has said behind closed doors that his “GiveA-(expletive) meter” is low when it comes to critics since he’s got enough money in the bank now (thanks to Christopher Johnson).

The head coach has also privately told folks he’s not going to significantly change how he operates. There was a hope in the organization Gase would learn from his failings in Miami, but that hasn’t happened.

The most notable adjustment has been Gase’s handling of press conferences this year. At least one influential person in the organization told Gase early in the season he needed to get his act together and not bristle at questions that he didn’t like, the News has learned.

The reasoning? People in the building felt acting like a child (like he had done in Miami too often) in those settings reflected poorly on the organization and him.

So, he begrudgingly relented, according to sources.

However, Gase is the same person he’s always been in just about every other way, according to sources. Although the coach claims he doesn’t read or hear the criticism that has trailed him all year, people in the building don’t actually believe that.

In fact, some people on One Jets Drive are convinced Gase or a family member has a burner Twitter account to monitor what is being written or said about him — and defend him if necessary.

Gase didn’t respond to several requests from the News for this story.

Gase has privately made it clear that getting a second head coaching contract has emboldened him, a fear that many had when he got another gig so quickly after the Dolphins fired him. He hasn’t been humbled in any way, according to people around him.

“He’s not changing,” another Jets source said. “He said he’s going to try to win his way.”

That’s a frightening notion given Gase’s track record.

His way has typically been the losing way.

The data is overwhelming.

Gase, who is 29-35 in four seasons as a head coach, has lost 26 games by double digits, 22 by at least two touchdowns, and 12 by at least 20 points.

In the days before the Super Bowl in 2015, Marshawn Lynch taunted the media — and the NFL, which requires all players to speak to reporters before the championship game — by proclaiming, “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”

It was peak Lynch: Defiant, funny, original.

He got away with it, too, because he was a superb running back, a cornerstone of the Seattle Seahawks teams that made it to the Super Bowl in consecutive years.

Now Lynch is back in Seattle after an uneasy departure following the 2015 season. Not to avoid getting fined, but to save the team’s precarious playoff chances.

Lynch, according to his agent, signed a contract with the Seahawks, who have lost several of their top running backs to injury in the past several weeks, including Chris Carson and C.J. Prosise in a loss on Sunday to the Arizona Cardinals.

He has not played this season, and his outside pursuits have included acting in the upcoming season of HBO’s futuristic show “Westworld.”

As desperate as the Seahawks are, it is unclear how much Lynch can contribute on Sunday. While he is familiar with the Seahawks’ playbook, Seattle’s offensive line has been mediocre, ranked 19th in the league by FootballOutsiders.com. Lynch will also be facing the 49ers, who have one of the best defensive fronts in the league.

Still, the Seahawks need just one good game out of Lynch to earn a week off. They also have quarterback Russell Wilson, who is having an MVP-caliber season, and they will be playing in front of their home crowd against a 49ers team that has less postseason experience.

There are also the intangibles that only Lynch can bring to a locker room. He was immensely popular with his Seattle teammates during his five and a half seasons there, bringing a unique swagger with his larger-than-life persona.

Each week during the season, Post NFL writer Mark Maske ranks the 32 teams. This week, the Ravens remain No. 1 and the Saints stay right on their heels.

The Seahawks drop after their puzzling loss at home to the Cardinals. The Chiefs, Patriots and 49ers move up. Things are wide open, particularly in the NFC. 1. Baltimore Ravens (13-2) | Last Week’s Rank: 1 Lamar Jackson and the offense got off to an uncharacteristically sluggish start in Cleveland. But the Ravens used a flurry late in the first half to get back to doing what they do, and they remain on a major roll as the postseason nears.

2. New Orleans Saints (12-3) | Last Week’s Rank: 2 The 49ers lost at home in Week 15 to the Falcons. The Seahawks lost at home Sunday to the Cardinals. The Saints aren’t perfect.

But with the playoffs just about at hand, they are the closest thing to a trustworthy team among the NFC’s front-runners.

3. Kansas City Chiefs (11-4) | Last Week’s Rank: 4 The defense is playing very well lately. Patrick Mahomes is doing Patrick Mahomes things.

The Chiefs are 7-1 on the road.

This will be a very dangerous team during the AFC playoffs.

4. New England Patriots (12-3) | Last Week’s Rank: 5 Tom Brady was very sharp in Saturday’s triumph over the Bills that clinched an 11th straight AFC East title for the Patriots.

Has a 12-3 team ever generated this much angst? No, the Patriots won’t be the favorite entering the AFC playoffs. But they certainly have a chance to be the last team standing yet again.

5. San Francisco 49ers (12-3) | Last Week’s Rank: 7 The 49ers pulled it out Saturday against the Rams and moved back into the No. 1 seed in the NFC entering next weekend’s showdown with the Seahawks.

But the defense is not looking so overpowering these days. That’s a concern.

6. Green Bay Packers (12-3) | Last Week’s Rank: 6 Many are dismissing the Packers as a legitimate Super Bowl threat in the NFC but they’re currently the No. 2 seed. The defense was very good during Monday night’s triumph at Minnesota and the offense rebounded from its error-prone first half.

7. Seattle Seahawks (11-4) | Last Week’s Rank: 3 Losing at home to the Cardinals in Week 16? Really? The Seahawks might get things together and still be a force in the NFC playoffs. But Sunday’s performance was truly alarming.

8. Houston Texans (10-5) | Last Week’s Rank: 10 The Texans found a way to win Saturday against the Bucs and the AFC South is theirs. But it’s difficult to know from week to week just what version of this team will show up.

9. Minnesota Vikings (10-5) | Last Week’s Rank: 8 The Vikings are locked into the No. 6 seed in the NFC after the loss to the Packers. The good news for Kirk Cousins: There are no Monday night games during the playoffs.

10. Buffalo Bills (10-5) | Last Week’s Rank: 9 The Bills certainly had their chance Saturday at New England.

But it doesn’t appear they’re quite ready to be an upper-tier team, at least not yet.

11. Philadelphia Eagles (8-7) | Last Week’s Rank: 14 Carson Wentz was terrific in Sunday’s win over the Cowboys and the Eagles are making it work with unheralded players around Wentz on offense. That will be good enough, most likely, to win the NFC East. It’s unlikely to be good enough during the playoffs.

12. Tennessee Titans (8-7) | Last Week’s Rank: 12 The AFC wild-card race was headed in reverse Sunday with the losses by the Titans and Steelers. Even if Tennessee manages to get into the postseason, the Titans certainly are looking like a one-and-done team in the playoffs.

13. Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7) | Last Week’s Rank: 11 Coach Mike Tomlin has done a superb job holding things

together and keeping the Steelers in the playoff chase under trying circumstances. The Steelers mostly have overachieved. Look who is playing QB and look who is on the field on offense around the QB. But that was a really bad loss to the Jets.

14. Atlanta Falcons (6-9) | Last Week’s Rank: 16 If only the Falcons had started to play well sometime before their season basically was over.

15. Denver Broncos (6-9) | Last Week’s Rank: 19 The Broncos may have found something with Drew Lock at QB. It wasn’t a great season, obviously. But with the Broncos set to emerge from it with hope that their QB situation finally has been resolved, it’s not a total calamity, either.

16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (78) | Last Week’s Rank: 13 Jameis Winston is 92 passing yards from 5,000 for the season.

He’s up to 31 TD passes and 28 interceptions after the four picks against the Texans. It would be difficult to part with a QB coming off a 5,000-yard passing season.

But there’s simply no way to be a legitimate contender with that kind of carelessness at QB. 17. Dallas Cowboys (7-8) | Last Week’s Rank: 15 Ezekiel Elliott didn’t get the key third-and-one carry in the third quarter Sunday in Philadelphia. Amari Cooper was on the sideline during crunchtime.

It remains baffling how the Cowboys are this bad, and that almost certainly will cost Coach Jason Garrett his job after he lasted 10 seasons working for owner Jerry Jones.

18. New York Jets (6-9) | Last Week’s Rank: 23 Le’Veon Bell got his revenge on the Steelers . . . sort of. The Jets’ victory Sunday was very damaging to the Steelers’ playoff chances. But Bell still is with the Jets, after all. There are no real winners in that exchange.

19. Oakland Raiders (7-8) | Last Week’s Rank: 24 A .500 season would be an accomplishment, given how bleak things looked last season in

Year 1 of Jon Gruden’s return to coaching. But more was expected after the Raiders elevated themselves into playoff contention around midseason.

20. Indianapolis Colts (7-8) | Last Week’s Rank: 25 This offseason, how many times will the Colts ask Andrew Luck whether he’s ready to come out of retirement?

21. Arizona Cardinals (5-9-1) | Last Week’s Rank: 26 The record isn’t good but there are things on which the Cardinals can build from Year 1 with Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray. The win at Seattle was impressive.

22. Chicago Bears (7-8) | Last Week’s Rank: 17 Did anyone really need a reminder that the Bears made a franchise-altering blunder by drafting Mitchell Trubisky instead of Patrick Mahomes? If so, it was provided Sunday night at Soldier Field.

23. Los Angeles Rams (8-7) | Last Week’s Rank: 18 What, exactly, was the secondary doing on that third-and-16 pass play by the 49ers that set up San Francisco’s winning field goal Saturday? Anyone?

24. New York Giants (4-11) | Last Week’s Rank: 27 Okay, it was nice for Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley to play so well. Beating the Redskins provided a win in a season in which victories have been scarce. But what about losing the chance to draft Chase Young?

25. Miami Dolphins (4-11) | Last Week’s Rank: 28 The crazy finish against the Bengals was unnecessarily stressful. But Brian Flores continues to out-coach his front office’s designs for this season.

26. Los Angeles Chargers (510) | Last Week’s Rank: 20 The unwanted franchise heads into an offseason in which the face-of-the-team QB’s future with the organization is in doubt.

It says here that the Chargers should keep Philip Rivers and let him play out his career with his original team.

27. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-10) | Last Week’s Rank: 21

Can the Jaguars’ games begin five minutes later now that Tom Coughlin is gone? His ouster from Jacksonville’s front office was necessary, given the on-field failures and the issues leading to the NFLPA’s warning that players might want to consider signing elsewhere. But he was a significant figure as a coach, and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

28. Cleveland Browns (6-9) | Last Week’s Rank: 22 If the Browns ever generate any offseason hype again, don’t believe it. Ever. They’re still the Browns. Always, always keep that in mind.

29. Washington Redskins (312) | Last Week’s Rank: 29 Just when rookie QB Dwayne Haskins was starting to play well, he left the field Sunday on a cart after suffering an ankle injury on a sack. The consolation prize for the Redskins is that they are now well positioned to end up with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft, which could be used on prized pass rusher Chase Young.

They just can’t go do something crazy like winning Sunday at Dallas.

30. Carolina Panthers (5-10) | Last Week’s Rank: 30 Memo to Panthers players: The season doesn’t end in October. Carolina’s performance in the second halves of the past two seasons has been astonishingly awful. Greg Olsen’s postgame takedown of the organization’s entire operation was on target. He’ll be great in a TV booth someday, perhaps soon.

31. Detroit Lions (3-11-1) | Last Week’s Rank: 31 The decision to retain Coach Matt Patricia was curious. If going 9-7 wasn’t good enough for Jim Caldwell to keep his job, how is going 9-21-1 over two seasons good enough for Patricia to stay?

32. Cincinnati Bengals (1-14) | Last Week’s Rank: 32 The Bengals are absolutely awful. But at least they made it entertaining against the Dolphins.

All but two NFL playoff berths are spoken for entering the season’s final Sunday. The Eagles and Cowboys are still fighting for the NFC East title, while the Titans, Steelers and Raiders are all still alive for the final AFC wildcard slot.

There could yet be significant jostling among the top seeds, with the most dramatic changes possible in the NFC, where the Seahawks and 49ers still need to decide the NFC West winner, and where no teams have yet clinched a first-round bye.

Here’s a look at where everyone stands and what they have to do to earn a spot in the postseason.

- What does the AFC playoff picture look like?

1. z-Ravens (13-2) 2. y-Patriots (12-3) 3. y-Chiefs (11-4) 4. y-Texans (10-5)

5. x-Bills (10-5) 6. Titans (8-7, own tiebreaker over Steelers on strength of victory) x: Clinched playoff berth; y: clinched division; z: clinched home-field advantage.

In the NFC, five of the six playoff berths have been clinched, with the NFC East winner the only unknown. In

the AFC, the Titans, Steelers and Raiders still can claim the final wild-card spot.

Titans (8-7): Tennessee will clinch an AFC wild-card berth with a win over the Texans; or a tie combined with a Steelers loss or tie against the Ravens; or a Steelers loss combined with a Colts loss or tie against the Jaguars.

Steelers (8-7): Pittsburgh will clinch an AFC wild-card berth with a win over the Ravens combined with a Titans loss or tie against the Texans; or with a tie combined with a Titans loss; or with a Titans loss combined with a Colts win over the Jaguars and a Raiders loss or tie against the Broncos; or with a Titans loss combined with a Colts win and wins by the following teams: Vikings, Packers, Chiefs and Dolphins.

Raiders (7-8): Oakland will clinch an AFC wild-card birth with a win over the Broncos combined with a Steelers loss to the Ravens, a Titans loss to the Texans, a Colts win over the Jaguars

NFC East title with a win over the Redskins combined with an Eagles loss to the Giants. In that scenario, Dallas and Philadelphia would both finish 8-8, but the Cowboys would own the head-tohead tiebreaker because of a better division record.

- What about home-field advantage and first-round byes?

The Ravens already have clinched a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

Patriots (12-3): New England will clinch a first-round bye with a win or tie against the Dolphins, or with a Chiefs loss or tie against the Chargers.

Chiefs (11-4): Kansas City will clinch a first-round bye with a win over the Chargers combined with a Patriots loss to the Dolphins. In that scenario, both the Chiefs and Patriots would finish with 12-4 records, but Kansas City would own the head-to-head tiebreaker because of its win over the Patriots in early December.

and a win or tie by one of the following teams: Bears, Lions, Chargers or Patriots. This would give the Raiders the strength-of-victory tiebreaker over the Steelers.

- Who can clinch division titles in Week 17?

The only undecided division races are in the NFC, where the East and West divisions still are up for grabs.

49ers (12-3): San Francisco will clinch the NFC West title with a win or tie against the Seahawks.

Seahawks (11-4): Seattle will clinch the NFC West title with a win over the 49ers. In that scenario, Seattle and San Francisco would both finish 12-4, but the Seahawks would own the head-tohead tiebreaker by virtue of a season sweep of the 49ers.

Eagles (8-7): Philadelphia will clinch the NFC East title with a win or tie against the Giants, or a Cowboys loss or tie against the Redskins.

The offense has regressed by every objective measure going from former play-caller Jeremy Bates to Gase.

Gase’s offense ranks in the bottom three in the league in total yards, rushing, passing, yards per play, third-down efficiency, and first downs.

He has divorced himself from the defense, too.

How detached has he been?

On at least two occasions this spring, Gase literally had his back to the defense on the field after the offense had wrapped up practice. He chatted with

people on the sideline, while Gregg Williams coached the defense. Then, Gase jogged off the field, while the defense was still practicing. He never turned around once to watch what the defense was doing.

Defensive players view Williams as their leader. To them, Gase is a glorified offensive coordinator. So, Gase doesn’t deserve the credit or blame for what happens on that side of the ball.

The real shame is that Jets fans want Gase to be successful, because they want to love their team. But they’re savvy enough to recognize a poor head coach. Lord knows they’ve seen enough of them in their days.

The propagandists have highlighted that the Jets have won five of their last seven

games, while conveniently omitting that those victories have come against teams with a combined 33-57 record (.347 winning percentage).

So, what can we truly glean from these victories against a bunch of teams that will sitting at home watching the playoffs like Gase?

The Jets were 0-4 this season against teams that have clinched a playoff berth. It’ll be 0-5 if the Eagles beat the Giants next week. Gase is 1-6 against teams with a winning record this season.

His way.

The Jets’ real season will end with a 6-9 record. The finale in Buffalo on Sunday will be nothing more than a preseason game for a playoffbound team that is locked into the No. 5 seed.

Gase’s club will face the Bills’ JV squad for most of — if not the entire — game. A seventh win for Gang Green would be nothing but window dressing on Gase’s resume.

(It would also adversely affect their draft positioning).

It’s disturbing that Gase has repeatedly cited injuries to explain away failures, too.

There’s a troubling trend in the locker room. Too many players are pointing to injuries when discussing the team’s struggles. Le’Veon Bell, Sam Darnold and Jordan Jenkins each referenced injuries after the win against the Steelers on Sunday.

Winning organizations don’t do that. When was the last time Tom Brady or any of the Patriots’ difference makers openly leaned on injuries

to explain in-season struggles?

It rarely if ever happens since Bill Belichick doesn’t allow it to become a part of his culture. Gase introduces it publicly and whines through back-channels.

“He’s a professional excusemaker,” one general manager told the News earlier this season.

Gase’s approval rating is circling the drain for myriad reasons. His poor production doesn’t warrant his arrogance.

Fans can stomach a cocky coach if he delivers. Jets fans are smart enough to spot a used car salesman.

Much of their fears have become reality. Meanwhile, Gase is laughing all the way to bank.

Response to gender identity clouds family get-togethers Dear Abby, We are expecting our first child after many years of struggling with infertility. We are overjoyed, to say the least.

I have a wonderful parent who used to be my father but who now identifies as a woman I’ll call “Grace.” She’s a supportive, loving, wonderful DEAR ABBY parent, and always was.

The problem is, the rest of the family has yet to see her transition. They are aware of what has happened, but are not comfortable with it. One family member keeps insisting that Grace is not transgender, just “confused.” She says that if she ever saw Grace dressed as a woman, she would laugh.

When it comes to a celebration for our bundle of joy, how do I handle this? I can’t imagine having the celebration without Grace, and I wouldn’t dream of asking her to dress as a male because I know how uncomfortable she would be. But I’m afraid if she attends, none of the other family will come because they are so uncomfortable.

Dear Abby, My husband has not been in good health

for years. He had an accident in 2007 in which his left arm was broken. The doctor did many surgeries over seven years, but he had to have it amputated in 2014.

Ten months ago, he suffered a debilitating stroke in the left lobe of his brain. He now has aphasia, the inability to use his right hand and arm, a loss of balance and he cannot walk unassisted. He must have help in all areas of daily living. I placed him in a rehab center, then into a nursing home.

The problem is, I feel so guilty about leaving him there. He isn’t happy and he blames me for keeping him there. I visit as often as possible, but it isn’t often enough for him I am sure. I am so disappointed. This is not the life that I had planned. Would you please tell me how to stop blaming myself, and how to accept this situation?

It’s OK to get the shingles vaccine if you can’t remember having chickenpox I’m a 75-year-old male who can’t remember whether or not he’s had chickenpox as a child.

This is somewhat important, as I’m considering getting the shingles shot to prevent that horrible illness. Which would be a prudent approach: go ahead and get the shingles shot or wait in suspense?

Two doses of the newer Shingrix vaccine are more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and its truly horrible complication, post-herpetic neuralgia, a persistent pain that can last for months, years or even a lifetime. The side effects of Shingrix are somewhat more common than for other vaccines, such as the flu vaccine. Most common are sore arm, fever and feeling unwell for a day or so.

I recently got the high-dose flu shot recommended for age 65 and above from my pharmacy. At the same time, I also got the second of two shots for pneumonia. I had absolutely no symptoms after the shots. I had to get up in the middle of that night and suddenly passed out in the bathroom. When I came to, I was crumpled up on the floor and could not stand up. I had to crawl back to bed. The next day I felt very lethargic and “out of it.”

I informed the pharmacy in case they track and report stuff like that. Their reaction was “Sorry about that.” Was this a fluke? Or should I avoid the high-dose flu shot in the future?

I can’t say for sure. Most people with reactions to the flu shot have other symptoms, and fainting usually happens immediately after the shot. Nonetheless, the reaction should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, which is something you can do yourself at vaers.hhs.gov/ reportevent.html. VAERS reports do not prove that the vaccine caused the adverse event, but are helpful for identifying trends.

The high-dose flu shot does have a higher incidence of adverse reactions than the standard dose, and getting more than one shot at the same time is likely to further increase the risk, although the absolute rate remains low.

Next year, I would still probably recommend the high-dose vaccine (you won’t need the pneumonia shot again), but I’d be sure you have an extra glass or two of water that day.

I think it is more likely that you had something called “micturition syncope,” which is a reflex type of fainting. Although it is a relatively benign type of fainting, it’s still worthwhile to have an evaluation from your doctor, including an electrocardiogram, just to be sure there are no surprises. It’s possible that it was the combination of the high-dose vaccine, the pneumonia vaccine, and the getting up in the middle of the night that caused the fainting.

Vaccines have frequent short-term side effects and rare long-term ones; however, the benefits greatly outweigh the risk.
