Power line incentive package on table By Melanie Lekocevic Columbia-Greene Media
A tax incentive package for a $177 million energy project is expected to be passed at the Greene County Industrial Development Agency’s next meeting Oct. 21. A public hearing held for the Champlain Hudson Power Express project that will run through Greene County drew no comments or opposition Wednesday. The package, which includes use, recording and
mortgage tax exemptions and a Payment in Lieu of Taxes, as well as a community host fund for several county towns and villages, is expected to pass at the IDA’s Oct. 21 meeting, IDA Executive Director Rene Van Schaack said Wednesday. The Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line would transport renewable energy through buried power lines running from the Canadian border to New York City, traveling through Greene County and 16 other
jurisdictions. “This project involves an electrical transmission line that will carry between 1,000 and 1,200 megawatts, with final capacity to be determined, of DC, or direct current, electricity from the Canadian border running down to New York City,” VanSchaack said to open the meeting. The transmission line will pass through several local towns and villages including

COXSACKIE — A monument and a road address were dedicated at the Greene County Sheriff’s Office in honor of a fallen deputy. Deputy Kevin Haverly, 26, of Greenville, died Feb. 28, 2017, when his patrol car slammed into a utility pole on Route 23 in Ashland. About 50 family members, friends and law enforcement officers gathered at the Greene County Sheriff’s Office on Route 9W in Coxsackie to dedicate the stone and plaque memorial directly in front of the main entrance. The inscription on the monument reads, “45 Haverly Memorial Drive,” Capt. Tracey Quinn said. The number “45” was Haverly’s badge number. Greene County Sheriff Pete Kusminsky addressed the crowd. “We are proud to have been able to dedicate the address in
Deputy Haverly’s memory,” Kusminsky said. “The access roadway being named Haverly Memorial Drive, and the building address being 45, which was Deputy Haverly’s shield, will help assure that he is never forgotten.” Assemblyman Chris Tague, R-Schoharie, spoke to the crowd and presented citations to members of the Haverly family and to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. “A profound respect and affection for Deputy Haverly have moved Greene County to dedicate the new road to the Sheriffs Office and Corrections Facility in his name as an acknowledgment of their respect, admiration and thanks for his unwavering commitment to Greene County, as well as for his love of life, and passion for his community,” Tague said.
