COXSACKIE — Several people are homeless following a fire on Sunday morning in the village, Coxsackie Fire Chief Shawn Burdick said. At about 7:13 a.m., Greene County 911 sent Coxsackie Fire Department to 227 Mansion St., after receiving reports that there was a fire in the building. When the first firefighters arrived on the scene, they confirmed it was a working fire, and had to force their way into the

first floor, Burdick said. The building contained a vacant storefront on the first floor and two apartments on the second floor, Burdick said. Fire officials requested that all available manpower respond to the scene, and requested mutual-aid assistance from neighboring fire companies. There was a heavy smoke condition on the first floor of the building, Burdick said. Firefighters went to work extinguishing the blaze and

reported it was under control at 7:43 a.m. They then began checking the rest of the structure to make sure it had not spread any further. The fire was contained to the first floor, and one wall of the building with smoke damage throughout the structure, Burdick said. The town code enforcement officer was called to the scene. Everyone got out safely and there were no reported injuries, See FIRE A8

All six public high schools in Greene County sent off their graduating seniors this weekend with an in-person commencement ceremony. This year’s graduations follow last year’s Class of 2020, which largely had to make do with virtual, drive-thru or other formats due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Valedictorian Drew Sirago thanked faculty and staff for working tirelessly to make a unique school year and giving the seniors a year to remember. He urged his fellow graduates to transform themselves by putting technology aside for a while and being present in the here and now, and then look to bring change to improve the world around them. “The future is bright and immense,” Sirago said. “Although See 2021 A8

Matt Evans of Newport Ventures explains the NY Stretch Code to the Athens Village Board.

ATHENS — The village board is considering adopting a greenenergy building code aimed at making residential and commercial structures more energy efficient. If adopted, the code would also bring the village closer to becoming eligible for grant money through the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority, or NYSERDA. Matt Evans of Newport Ventures, which contracts with

NYSERDA, presented the village board with details of the NY Stretch Code. “The NY Stretch Code is a way for a community to get ahead of the game with new construction. It also covers existing buildings, additions, remodeling projects,” Evans said. “Overall, it will make a building more efficient than the current New York energy code, which went into effect last year on May 12.” Under the NY Stretch Code, builders and remodelers would be required to adhere to a new

set of more energy-efficient building codes. “On the residential side, it will make a house 19% more efficient than the current code. For the commercial side, it averages about 7% more efficient,” Evans said. “What we want to focus on is reducing greenhouse gases — that is the primary goal. Getting buildings more efficiently built now instead of waiting for the next code cycle to come through. New York state is not going to See CODE A8
