HUDSON — Columbia County is looking at options for imposing an occupancy charge on short-term rentals such as AirBnB, Vrbo, Tripping and others. “What we’re looking at is imposing an occupancy tax on all these short-term rentals within the county,” Columbia County Controller Ronald Caponera said. Caponera said the city of Hudson is already requiring permits for short-term rental properties. At a special Columbia

“This sort of levels the playing field. Because all hotels are paying sales tax, and some are paying occupancy tax already, whereas the AirBnBs and some of these short-term rentals are not paying any tax whatsoever. So it levels the playing field for the hotels and it becomes a resource for us.” — Matt Murell, Board of Supervisors Chairman

County Board of Supervisors meeting Thursday evening a presentation was given about Granaicus Host Compliance, a company that offers a platform to government bodies to handle their communities’ short-term rental information,

registration, tax collection and enforcement needs. Samantha White, the account executive for Granicus Host Compliance, said Columbia County has 962 shortterm rental properties. She said the median nightly rental

rate across these properties is $226. She said towns and cities have the ability to charge these property owners a permit fee for renting them out as a short-term rental. White showed several different options the county

could choose with the company, as well as a breakdown of how much it would cost each town based on the number of short-term rental properties in that location. White said Granicus Host Compliance would be able to help the county and its towns to keep track of the shortterm rental properties so they would be able to know who to tax if and when they adopted an occupancy tax on these short-term rentals. Each town would be responsible for enforcement, See TAX A8

At a vaccination pod at the college, Columbia County Department of Health Director Jack Mabb gave Delgado a tour of the vaccination site where the county was administering 400 second doses of

and inspiring to see.” The C-GCC gym has been converted into a space where the department of health has been able to administer COVID-19 vaccinations. Groups of people waiting to receive their

Lesly Zamor plans to bring a boutique furniture store to Greenport. He plans to renovate the building, which is an “eyesore,” he said.

GREENPORT — Renovations are planned for a former Greenport auto body shop at 5986 Route 9G to make way for a high-end furniture store. The property is located at the intersection of Route 9G and Middle Road. Lesly Zamor, the owner of the site, plans to open a boutique furniture store called Hudson Design Center at the location, he said. Zamor lives and works in Hudson, Mount Vernon and New York City. Zamor presented the plans to the Greenport Planning Board Tuesday with engineer Ryan Louck, of Crawford & Associations Engineering & Land Surveying, based in Hudson. The store will be a “nice asset” to the area, he said to the board. “We hope to attract some nice customers,” Zamor said Thursday.

Zamor has had a home in Hudson since 2000, he said. “We hope to add to the fabric of Hudson with the furniture center,” he said. The building renovation will be designed by Hal Goldstein’s New York City-based firm HGX Design, in conjunction with Zamor. “It’s high-end furniture so it’s going to be very tasteful,” Zamor told the board. “All of our operations have always been tasteful.” Phahema Mohamed sold the property to 5986 Route 9G LLC for $280,000 on Sept. 11, 2020, according to property records. The property was assessed for $150,000 in 2020. Zamor co-owns the Design Furniture Outlet as a tenant of The Warehouse at 99 South 3rd St., he said Thursday. The large warehouse contains vendors who sell antiques, furniture and clothing, as well See HOPES A8
