Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2013

Page 1

WELCOME TO CABARET 2013

Kate So wonderful to have another year to help curate, contribute to and simply be a part of the juggernaut that this Festival has become. Every invitation extended this year seems to have been accepted which is great and terrifying all at the same time. We’re bursting at the seams! The theme of Cabaret consolidates itself each year. Not just recycling or simply presenting the past in all its vintage glory (which in itself would be great) but inviting us to look into the future. It’s about discovery. And since the whole premise of cabaret is, and always has been ‘entertainment’, it’s YOU the audience that benefit from this dialogue. We celebrate YOU and invite you to sit amongst the artist and their dreams. The artists continue to shape and produce acts of wonder and grace, the singers, the writers and the actors are themselves changing and evolving with the art form. Indeed the whole language of Cabaret is becoming more and more the entertainment of choice because of the rare skills required. Dare I say, more than just a rock gig, more than just a strip tease, more than a Broadway song sung well. It’s about making something REALLY difficult look really bloody easy. And since it’s the 40th anniversary of Adelaide Festival Centre, I say let’s smash a bottle of champers across its prow and set sail into some seriously dangerous weather patterns... and get absolutely soaking wet! Kate Ceberano Artistic Director, Adelaide Cabaret Festival

We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Adelaide Festival Centre in style. The Cabaret Festival’s Variety Gala Performances will salute the traditions of cabaret and variety so central to the history of this great arts centre. This is our 13th Adelaide Cabaret Festival, and Artistic Director Kate Ceberano and the team will once again present a unique and fantastic program, with an astounding range of artists. I thank you our loyal audience and our sponsors who make it all possible and our staff and volunteers for the commitment and passion that they continue to pour into this festival each year. I look forward to seeing you here at Cabaret time.

There’s no better way to shake off those winter blues than to dress up and kick back at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. With its mix of classic and contemporary cabaret performances, this fabulous festival has a reputation for highlighting the very best local, national and international cabaret artists. Glitzy and glamorous and sometimes risqué, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival offers unforgettable nights of music, satire, comedy, story-telling and a chance to warm up and dance the night away. Some of this year’s highlights include two of Broadway’s stars of Wicked - Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth (also of TV’s The West Wing). Australian favourites include Paul McDermott, Tom Burlinson and Paul Capsis. The Festival’s Artistic Director Kate Ceberano teams up with Teddy Tahu Rhodes to bring together music theatre, opera and rock ‘n’ roll in Meet Me in the Middle. Jazz singer and composer Cassandra Wilson will perform with a sensational sextet of musicians from the United States. Don’t miss the Variety Gala Performance, where we’ll be toasting the 40th anniversary of the Adelaide Festival Centre. All up, in 2013 there will be 350 artists in 160 performances over 18 days and nights - from wellknown cabaret stars to edgy new acts. Come along and join the party.

A WILD, FUNNY AND OUTRAGEOUS MUSICAL Shane Warne The Musical premiered in 2008, becoming an instant smash hit with critics and audiences alike, picking up Helpmann, Green Room and Premier’s Literary Awards - and the glowing imprimatur of Shane Warne himself. In this new concert style presentation, Eddie Perfect heads up an exceptional cast (including Lisa McCune as Simone Warne and Shane Jacobson as Terry Jenner) to re-imagine the piece as the epic, hero-worshipping, PR spinning, celebrity-slaying, satirical homage it was always destined to be. Acclaimed director Simon Phillips leads this exciting new production with Eddie’s updated score musically directed and brilliantly arranged for a 24 piece orchestra by the award winning Iain Grandage.

Shane Warne The Musical in concert features songs that range from the hilarious to the genuinely moving; this is Eddie Perfect writing and performing at his sharpest, most savage and wonderfully inventive best.

Love. War. Death. IRVING BERLIN: SONGS IN THE KEY OF BLACK A RITZY SELECTION OF BERLIN SONGS DELIVERED WITH STYLE The shadowy alleys and darkest dive saloons of old New York City are recreated by Australian chanteuse Lucy Maunder as she unplugs and reboots the decadence and danger of last century’s greatest songwriter... Irving Berlin. Lucy will charm you as she revisits heart aching classics like How Deep is the Ocean to the showbiz razzamatazz of Puttin’ On The Ritz. With Musical Director Andrew Patterson, a scintillating script by Nicholas Christo and directed by Neil Gooding, this dazzling team mines Irving Berlin’s popular songbook.

Renowned Australian theatre legend Helen Morse is joined by musical theatre stalwart John O’May and rising star Lucy Maunder for an inspired celebration of one of the 20th century’s most influential songwriters. Brel’s poetic pop songs of bruised romance and flawed humanity evoke the mix of brutal honesty and absolute beauty. Life is horrible but isn’t it wonderful. Sung in French and English the best of Brel’s vast songbook will resonate in the intimacy of the Space Theatre.

Most widely known for creating classic Broadway and Hollywood favourites such as White Christmas and There’s No Business Like Show Business, Irving Berlin’s prolific career began when he sparked an international dance craze with Alexanders Ragtime Band and overnight the world became his oyster.

In post-war Paris, Jacques Brel became the musical voice of his generation, turning out popular French songs about love, death and war.

CABARET: THE COMPLETE UNAUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY In 1881, a group of young radical writers gathered in a salon in Paris. Here they spent the night sharing ideas, taking turns in-between drinks to serenade each other over wine and candlelight. It was here in the ‘Black Cat’ salon that Cabaret was born. Journey from the conception of the word itself, through to modern day Broadway stages and everything in between, as Australia’s newest cabaret sensation and winner of the 2012 Australian Cabaret Showcase, pays homage to the evolution of an art-form that refuses to be forgotten!

IS A STORM IN A D CUP A BLONDE BOMBSHELL WITH A CUNNING TONGUE AND POWERHOUSE VOCALS Dysfunction follows this dazzling disaster around like the broken heel on a four-year-old stiletto. But one thing is certain: a life full of catastrophe makes for a damn entertaining story! When you’ve been blessed with a gay father, include ‘exotic dancer’ on your resume and have caused the spectacular demise of four automobiles, what’s left to do but sing for your supper? A fresh force to be reckoned with in Australia’s cabaret landscape, 2012 Australian Cabaret Showcase runner-up Amelia Ryan will sing you through an uninhibited life journey in song.

SEA SHANTIES SET IN THE ‘70S

THE COLLECTOR THE ARCHIVIST THE ELECTROCRAT Featuring an eclectic mix of original music, dance, storytelling, humour and animation - you’ll be intrigued and beguiled by the Collector, a tall lady-of-the-house, the dancing Archivist (her much shorter personal assistant) and the Electrocrat.

SERENADES, FIST FIGHTS & SEA SHANTIES FROM THE AGE OF OIL Local creative talents Cameron Goodall, Quincy Grant and Andy Packer have come together to create a boisterous new cabaret adventure featuring original music and invoking traditional sea shanties and siren songs.

Exquisitely animated by Ahmarnya Price, RRAMP is an endearing comically deadpan performance of hard-hitting electronica dance metal rock, reflecting on unexpected and compelling stories of archives, collections, pets, childhood imaginings and human frailty. With these characters’ distinct vision, bittersweet stories and glorious musicianship, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry... you’ll ROCK!

#...this show will definitely seduce you... with its wicked sounds and stories... of edgy and deliciously absurd rock theatre."

It’s 1975. The world threatens to slow in the grips of an energy crisis. Four men clamber into a helicopter and head out into the fury of the North Sea, each seeking riches from the deep. A woman stands at a cliff, grasping a lock of her lover’s hair and wails at the sun as it slips beneath the ocean. Here are the songs that remember these hitherto unsung heroes, the violence and tenderness they shared, the calamity that befell them, and the oil rig they called home.

LA MUSIQUE BURSTING WITH ORIGINALITY AND DESIRE

SLEEPLESS IN NEW YORK

With a recently released recording of La Musique and a tour across Europe under her belt, Emma Hamilton’s quirky jazz inspired sound is seducing a legion of fans around the world.

Mark Campbell’s off-Broadway hit musical for one actor features smart, witty lyrics and music by 18 composers. It’s part cabaret, part theatre modern song cycle, sung in pyjamas by a gay urban romantic.

Accompanied by her brother Thomas, Emma sings in both English and French offering an intoxicating blend of jazz-pop standards and hook-laden originals. La Musique is an exploration into the joy, the passion, the regret and sadness of love and life itself.

SONGS OF LOVE, LONGING AND LOSS

Performed by Michael Lindner (South Pacific, Mary Poppins, Priscilla) and Musical Direction by Geoffrey Castles (Mary Poppins, Wicked), Songs from an Unmade Bed explores the bittersweet stories of love and loss with fragile intimacy, risqué humour and soaring vocals. COMPOSERS: Debra Barsha, Mark Bennett, Peter Foley, Jenny Giering, Peter Golub, Jake Heggie, Lance Horne, Stephen Hoffman, Gihieh Lee, Steven Lutvak, Steve Marzullo, Brendan Milburn, Chris Miller, Greg Pliska, Duncan Sheik, Kim D. THE STORY OF CHRISTINE McVIE, “THE OTHER WOMAN” IN FLEETWOOD MAC

QUE RESTE-T’IL?

Musical Direction by ISAAC HAYWARD Written by JAMES MILLAR Directed by JASON LANGLEY

THE DOYENNE OF CABARET IS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND Revered the world over for her masterful performances of German cabaret, Robyn Archer explores the classic cabaret traditions of Paris and Vienna.

“Christine wrote most of the hits, she was the major pop songwriter, not Lindsey or me” Stevie Nicks

Tracing French songs from Le Chat Noir and Toulouse Lautrec’s favourite, Aristide Bruant all the way through the twentieth century to the end of the 1960s there are songs by Jouy and Le Grand, Ferrer, Trenet, Monnot, Gainsbourg along with selections sung by Piaf, Damia, Trenet, Montand, Bardot and more.

On the eve of a comeback tour for one of the most famous bands in rock’n’roll history, Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac decided not to reunite with the band.

Songs with a satirical bite are sung in English, while love songs are sung in French. With translations by Archer and Michael Morley, this is captivating cabaret - highly satirical, highly emotional - an expert tour de force.

This is an intriguing tale of international fame, songwriting, privacy... and the decision to Go Your Own Way. Australia’s hottest new stage sensation, Catherine Alcorn, brings you the hidden story told from the perspective of McVie herself: one of the greatest ever rock’n’roll composers and performers of the last century.

#A commanding voice. Alcorn fully shows her talents as a performer. Remarkable." Time Out Sydney

SUGARTITS GUERRILLA CABARET OF SUBVERSIVE ORIGINALITY Hold on to your morals, as Bourgeois & Maurice hijack the Artspace with their critically-acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe hit Sugartits!

A MAN, A PIANO & ANNIE LENNOX Adelaide’s own star of Jersey Boys MICHAEL GRIFFITHS returns to Adelaide Festival Centre as Annie Lennox with no accent, costume or wig. From writer/director Dean Bryant, lyrics have been plumbed for new meaning, melodies reinterpreted, all peppered with candid musings and remembrances from the moody songstress herself. From the gender bending early days as one half of ‘80s sensation Eurythmics through to her stunning solo career, her bittersweet lyrics share the confessions of her triumphs and her heartbreak.

Photo: Kurt Sneddon

Treading the line between comedy, cabaret and a goth-pop-catwalk nightmare, Bourgeois & Maurice almost defy categorisation. This cult musical duo have established themselves as one of the international cabaret scene’s darkest, sharpest, funniest acts with their award winning catchy-as-hell songs, racking up performances around the world from New York to Belgrade. Not suitable for children under 16... or Rupert Murdoch supporters.

SONGS BY ANNIE LENNOX

Joey ARIAS ON HOLIDAY

SONGS TO SELF-DESTRUCT TO TAKE YOUR TRAGEDY AND MAKE IT MARVELLOUS!

PURE CABARET GOLD New York cabaret icon Joey Arias is joined by jazz piano virtuoso Charly Zastrau in this intimate show featuring selections from his first recording Arias on Holiday as well as highlights from his recent sold out concerts at New York’s Central Park Summer Stage and London’s Meltdown Festival.

All the songs that you’ve ever loved and lost to are given a new glittering life as cheerful, upbeat sing-a-longs. Roll your pain in sequins and teach it to high-kick! Navigate the frightening, lonely hours between midnight and dawn with foul-mouthed femme fatale Virginia Gay as she takes you through her favourite selfharming toe-tappers, her best-loved wrist-slitting ditties, with all the pep of black coffee, cigarettes and a bottle full of uppers.

Celebrated for his channeling of legendary jazz and blues singer, Billie Holiday, Arias has gone on to become a world class vocalist with his own, unique style.

IRRESISTIBLE IRREVERENCE OUT OF THE DARK Paul’s highly acclaimed 2013 Adelaide Fringe exhibition The Dark Garden is now a stage show. TV’s favourite funny man, Paul McDermott returns to the stage with this highly anticipated world premiere created especially for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. When you are totally lost, you may find yourself in The Dark Garden. Not so much a place you can visit, as a state of mind. He is joined on stage by his four piece band, lead by the dynamic Stu Hunter, and accompanied by a string quartet from the Adelaide Art Orchestra. Together they create beautiful soundscapes for a new collection of emotionally charged songs, punctuated by Paul’s grotesque and wildly funny stories of life in the wilderness of his own Dark Garden.

Martha

COME HOME TO MAMA THE VOICE OF A MUSICAL DYNASTY

Martha Wainwright grew up immersed in the rich sounds of the famous Wainwright/ McGarrigle musical dynasty. Now this Brooklyn based chanteuse has cemented her claim as a bona-fide artist in her own right. With her expert control of timbre and depth, Martha displays a remarkable polarity between songs of harrowing despair and uplifting spontaneity. She is simply unmatched in her ability to use light and shade, coupled with dynamic arrangements and lyrics of remarkable candour and acerbic humour.

#Martha Wainwright excels at both singing and songwriting, and earns herself a spot among this decade’s foremost performers." Popmatters.com

Martha’s incredible, evocative and distinctive voice will course its way through pop, soul and folk. She can, within a single verse, play both angel and demon. Martha will present a richly diverse repertoire from several of her albums including her recent acclaimed release Come Home To Mama and songs by her late mother Kate McGarrigle, including the hauntingly beautiful Proserpina, the last song Kate wrote before she died in January 2010.

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST ONE MAN BAND LET HER LASHES BEGUILE YOU Be seduced by a sultry New York cabaret superstar. Mistress of Ceremonies for current New York hotspot The Darby, Lady Rizo combines vintage arrangements with theatrical explorations of pop songs and originals. This Grammy award-winning diva fills intimate cabaret spaces to the rafters with a signature mix of elegance, blue humor and a voice that has been described as the product of a night of unrestrained indulgence between Peggy Lee, Mel Brooks, Nina Simone, Dean Martin and Janis Joplin.

A heady drunken punch of mariachi rockk ‘‘n’’ rolll soul music

Three wanna-be-Mexicans pay homage to their heroes of outlaw rock and roll, soul, and Mexican folk music. They summon the long dead spirits of Ritchie Valens, Nathaniel Mayer, The Bar Kays, Pedro Vargas… from the clubs of Detroit Soul City, to the stench of New York punk dives, and the street music of dusty Mexico. They’ll spit on the floor and steal cigarettes from you, pass you their bottle of beer to share, throw you a maraca to shake, and probably wink at your girlfriend, and you’ll love every moment.

Marika LAST OF THE RED HOT MAMAS Sophia Kalish was born in a poor village in Ukraine in 1884. She became known as the oversexed, outspoken and outrageous American star of vaudeville, Sophie Tucker, aka the Last of the Red Hot Mamas. Adelaide Cabaret Festival’s resident Red Hot Mama, Marika Aubrey celebrates Sophie’s brilliant life and career, highlighting her own personal connections to the country that got left behind. You’ll be transported to a 1920s speakeasy complete with Sophie’s band The Five Kings of Syncopation lead by Musical Director Geoffrey Castles featuring the hit songs, You for Me in the Summertime, The Lady is a Tramp and her trademark song Some of These Days.

CABARET SURVIVOR A MID-LIFE CABARET CAREER - REHASHED Thirty years ago in 1983, pianist, singer, writer and satirist Phil Scott created his first solo cabaret show. Since then he has been recycling the same material under different titles (Serious Cabaret; My Long Awaited Comeback; The Twink and the Showgirl), and performing in the annual Wharf Revues for the Sydney Theatre Company (Sunday in Iraq With George; Pennies from Kevin; Red Wharf). One of Australia’s national showbiz treasures will take you on a personal, idiosyncratic and at times hilarious mid-life cabaret career journey. More a rehash than a retrospective, Cabaret Survivor brings together Phil’s favourite songs and parodies to reveal his unique perspective on life, politics and music.

AN EXTRAORDINARY FUSION OF VOICE

Teddy AND

With the Adelaide Art Orchestra Conducted by Vanessa Scammell

MEET ME IN THE MIDDLE From an initial meeting during rehearsals of South Pacific at Opera Australia headquarters, Kate Ceberano and Teddy Tahu Rhodes began a musical collaboration that merges opera, musical theatre and rock ‘n’ roll.

Serendipity brought them together but their combination of warm tones and silky Polynesian harmony has produced something truly unforgettable. In a worldwide premiere, Kate Ceberano and Teddy Tahu Rhodes now bring their unique brand of harmony to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Kate and Teddy’s voices literally ‘meet in the middle’ a classically trained bass baritone and contemporary diva! This is a musical marriage that blends two cultures into one, from a traditional Maori lullaby Hine-e segueing into a cover of Throw your Arms Around Me. From Les Miserables, to Carmen, Gershwin to Hunters and Collectors, Kate Ceberano and Teddy Tahu Rhodes explore their mutual love of music. Joined on stage by the Adelaide Art Orchestra and conductor Vanessa Scammell this is a romantic, irreverent, emotionally charged musical fusion.

BORN TO RUN

A GUIDE TO UNHAPPINESS

ONE WOMAN’S SPRINGSTEEN INSPIRED JOURNEY

MAGICAL PHILOSOPHY OR PHILOSOPHICAL MAGIC? Meet SUNNY LEUNIG a Magosopher (ma-jos-opher) - a hapless, awkward magician and an amateur philosopher. Another depressing malaise is enough for him to embark on a journey and meet his favourite philosophers who take him on a whimsical guide to unhappiness. A sold-out hit at the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival, A Guide to Unhappiness weaves together stunning magic, performance and music to offer a thoughtful and irreverent lesson in Magosophy - magic and philosophy combined.

Take an iconic US rock star and guitarist, delve into his songwriting and embrace the lyrics. Acclaimed local cabaret singer Michelle Nightingale channels the troubled heart of Bruce Springsteen’s work, in a brilliant new one-woman show especially commissioned for Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

Born to Run is a surprising journey driven by a woman’s need to keep running. Backed by heartfelt acoustic arrangements, you will be moved by a performance which is both intimate and global.

Remember: Life is wonderful, only if it is a little bit miserable.

THE BRIGHT LIGHT OF BROADWAY In 2007 Adam Guettel, struck by inspiration, disappeared into his studio to emerge with five new shows: a fairy tale adventure, the tale of an invisible man, a love story, a parable about the desire to be good and, most controversially, an opera for the devil.

IN CONCERT #The theater composer Adam Guettel is so overwhelmingly gifted that any news of his activities stirs the kind of fervent expectations that surround Stephen Sondheim, and before that, Leonard Bernstein."

Under the musical direction of long-time collaborator, Kim Grigsby, and with the stunning Haley Bond by his side, you’ll be among the first to experience selections from these new shows. In this rare stage appearance this extraordinary musical theatre team will also perform highlights from his critically acclaimed musicals The Light in the Piazza, for which he won two Tony Awards, Myths and Hymns and Floyd Collins. The grandson of the great Richard Rodgers who wrote the hits Carousel, Oklahoma!, and South Pacific, Adam Guettel is one of Broadway’s most vibrant new voices - a composer/lyricist who has created some of the most adventurous musical theatre of the last decade.

THE CLEVER AUSTRALIAN In the eyes of the world, Australia will always be the young country. Our reputation for optimism and energy is well-founded, but to those who equate youth with ignorance, we introduce 28 year old Dr Sam Prince. In addition to working full-time in a hospital, he established a charitable foundation which has built 15 schools here and around the world. Now he’s directing his attention to the elimination of disease, starting with communities in the Northern Territory – and this is just the beginning of his career. While Dr. Prince’s resourcefulness and talent stand out, he does not stand alone. Ours is a land of flourishing ideas, and we want to create partnerships that ensure Australian thinking and skills remain in demand the world over.
