STYLE IN REVIEW Written and Edited by Addie Benson

Old World New is truly a passion project; my "baby," if you will. The mission is simple: "reuse, sustain, make old new again." Sustainability and reuse are the methods I practice to try to live a wholesome, minimally impactful life on this earth. With Old World New, I hope to share my approach and influence others to become more conscious of how their actions affect the earth, and to want to make a change. Fashion and design are another way I express myself, so my love for styling second-hand clothes came naturally. I believe that wearing used clothes, better known as "thrift store finds," is an opportunity to decrease how we hurt the earth. The fashion industry is one of the main causes of pollution and unfair workshop treatment, creating health risks in both situations due to the amount of hazardous materials used to produce them, and the danger and lack of care given to workers in countries without strict labor laws.

Let's work together to change that, one beautiful outfit at a time.

Caution: this outfit successfully contains something old, something new, and something DIY! Who says you can’t combine thirfty and trendy pieces to create a current chic look?

Outfit details: Plaid, black and white long sleeveved button up with fringe that hangs from both the front and back of the shirt – Bloomingdales – Rails Gianna Fringed Shirt $148 /// Black quilted mini skirt – Threadflip (an online consignment/upscale second-hand shop) $11 /// Black wedge heels – thrifted – with DIY removable fringe that I created – shoes $10, DIY less than $15.

CULTURAL APPRECATION 18

2015 saw the start of the "Cultural Appredciation" series for Old World New. In each installment of the series, cultural appreciation was approached from a fashion stand point. This is one of the many outfits that made the cut. It is handmade, unlike the others that were thrifted. Of course, having an Old World New outfit with no special thrift find is unheard of, so I must point out the rad 90s heels that complete this ensemble.

"Diversity is the spice of life. I love pulling influence from different cultures. The easy access to knowledge of different peoples’ heritages has helped shaped me to be who I am today. Therefore, I practice love, not hate. At Old World New, we practice cultural appreciation, not cultural appropriation.

Learn about and have respect for the cultures that you seek to emulate – you’ll be happy that you opened your mind to “a whole new world” (I hope you sang that in your Jasmine & Aladdin voice, because I did!)."

18 More about the brand: Alero Jasmine is a London-based handmade fashion brand that draws inspiration from the creaotr's African roots. It is a modern spin on traditional African garb and brightly patterned fabric.

$20 Thrift Challenge

For a grand total of $20, this street chic outift was created head to toe over the span of a few months of thrift shopping (excluding unmentionables). A little patience and regular thrifting can go a long way.

Outfit details: Shirt: a regular t-shirt with one of my favorite artist on it. $3 at a thrift store in Memphis, TN. I searched online for cut-up t-shirt inspiration, and changed it to be breezy and comfortable.

Pants: $8 at a DFW thrift store. I distressed them and made the legs more fitted because they had a 10 | 2015 STYLE IN REVIEW

wide flare at the bottom and then cuffed the bottom hem.

Shoes: I do, however, run across new and like new shoes from time to time. I found these vintage inspired wing tip heels for $8 at a different DFW thrift store.

Purse: This Alba purse that looks like it is made to favor a Dooney & Bourke bag was $1 at a garage sale.

ETHEREAL VINTAGE

Curated vintage shops are so different from thrift stores, but both stores hold one thing in common: they never fail to sell beautiful items. This crocheted dress was found at a Texas vintage shop, and it seems to be handmade. The undergarments worn with it were made by Reformation, a company that uses deadstock fabric to create unique clothing.

Their clothes are conceptualized, designed, created, marketed and shipped out of one building in America. This ensemble is the perfect mixture of old and new, in a way that is both beautiful and delicate on the earth.

Worn for the 2015 Fashion Revolution celebration of "Who Made My Clothes?", this second-hand and eco-friendly combo proves that current day fashion can be less harmful on the earth than it has been in the past, while being absolutely beautiful.

Who wears thfited vintage finds to their first NYFW? This girl.

This is an example of finding a perfect vintage piece, waiting until its right time, and debuting it will grace and style. Found nearly 2 years before it was worn, the 80's, off-shoulder peplum top defined my style perfectly on the NYFW scene.

MANICURE Bellacures' Natural Nail Alternative Bellacures is a revolutionary nail salon that shatters your stereotypical idea of a nail shop and replaces it with an experience that caters to & pampers you in every aspect. You can sit back in plush, relaxing chairs instead of a conference table style chair where you have to huddle over the table to allow the manicurist access to your nails. Instead of the pedicure chairs, a clean tub of water is brought to you for your feet to soak for your pedicure. This set up makes it easy to get your mani & pedi done at the same time! I’m happy to have visited 20 | 2015 STYLE IN REVIEW

this shop for their grand opening where I experienced the unique layout for the first time. It was also there that I learned about the all natural mani & pedi – and I have fallen in love with them.

Bellacures already uses a lot of products that are more organically derived than other shops. The all natural mani & pedi strives to make every aspect organic and as chemical-free as possible. The nail polish remover by Karma Naturals has Soybean Oil and Lavendar, and doesn’t leave your nails and finger

tips dry like normal acetone.

Organic lotions are used for the massage portion of the mani & pedi.

Deborah Lippmann identifies their polish as “5 Free.” This means “no Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor or DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate). No animal testing.” Their website defines it as “luxury treatment-enriched nail polish with Biotin, Green Tea Extract.”

OPI is 3 free, making it still a little more green than most polishes.

I always leave Bellacures feeling refreshed instead of doused in the scent of acrylic powder (y’all know that nail shop smell that I’m talking about). The Deborah Lippmann color lasts two weeks when you take care of your nails, and it looks and feels like a normal polish. There’s no great sacrifice that has to made to live a little more green, darlings.
