The President's report Dr Gwen Chin ADAWA President

Having read the President’s Reports over the years, it is somewhat surreal that I am the author of this one. The announcement made at the Annual General Meeting and the placement of the President’s ‘necklace’ upon my shoulders also illustrated the ‘weight’ of responsibility that I had just inherited.

This journey started at the beginning of the pandemic and the need to give back to the community. The Council of that period was to be commended on pulling us through those times and from that point on, change was to be on our doorstep.

I would like to express our gratitude to Dr Amit Gurbuxani, our Immediate Past President, and the Council members that have seen us through these necessary changes.

Our heartfelt thanks must also go to our CEO, Trevor Lovelle and all the team at ADAWA, who have been evolving and pivoting with these adjustments

over the last year or so. Most importantly, I would like to thank the members for their trust in us and the processes that have come from these changes. Our governance is stronger and our vision for growth is developing steadily.

This year’s Council illustrates the diversity that is present in our community. It is a fantastic indication of the commitment that our members have to our organisation and to their fellow members! We will soon be forming our committees for 2024 and we would encourage any member who would like to contribute and be involved, to please express their interest.

As your Council, our job is to do what is best for ADAWA. By serving, protecting and progressing ADAWA, we look after our members and their interests, now and for the future.

Sporty dentists

What do dentists do when they are not chairside? Many of our members take part in sport for fitness, fun and work-life balance.

NICK GOH - Volleyball Nick Goh has been playing volleyball competitively for six years. “I have played in the second highest division in WAVL (Western Australian Volleyball League) and made top four on many occasions,” he says. “I also participated in many small tournaments and won some cash prizes.”

Nick says volleyball allows him to destress during trainings and he looks forward to games on the weekends.

“It is a very social sport that requires coordination and understanding within a team to play at a high level,” he says. “Volleyball, like Dentistry, is hard to master and demands continual practice and development but is very rewarding once results are reaped.”

To someone considering taking up volleyball, Nick says it is a challenging but rewarding sport.

“There is a hurdle to overcome initially, then it takes commitment to master the sport,” he says. “In the end though, the friends you make along the journey and the improvements you see in yourself make it all worth it.”

Recognise when it’s time to get out of the hole and refer it to a specialist.

FRANK WELTEN – Golf Frank Welten started playing golf as a teenager and has played about once a week for the last 30 years. “I enjoy it but am not driven to perfection as in my practice of dentistry, it was more an outlet for not having to worry if I was perfect at it or not, and as many of my colleagues would attest to, I definitely don't attain to perfect golf,” he says.

He adds he enjoys the early morning golf in any weather and being able to compete yet still enjoy the outing.

He finds golf helpful in achieving a work-life balance away from the practice. “You start to realise that each hole or each game is stand alone; the last shot or score doesn't define what you will do next, and with work that allowed me to realise that if you have a difficult case or situation or even a complete

bad day that doesn't define your next patient or treatment plan,” he explains. “You just need to recenter yourself, get back to basics and do your best and (my colleagues in golf will smile at this) try to improve on the past!”

To another dentist considering taking up golf, Frank says he would encourage them to begin with a few basic lessons from a professional coach and play a few rounds with friends, not worrying about scoring at the start, but just to enjoy the walk and the camaraderie. “Then if you enjoy it, consider more lessons and then joining a golf club, so that you can challenge and better your game,” he says.

“As a Dentist I would suggest joining the Western Australian Dental Association Golf Society, play with colleagues and industry reps and get in some networking as well as some relaxation.” adawa.com.au

PETER NGUYEN – Soccer, basketball and social netball Dental student Peter Nguyen actively participates in soccer, basketball and social netball, playing at least three-to-four times a week.

“What I enjoy most about organised sports is that for an hour or so, I can forget about other things happening in my life and solely focus on trying to perform and win the game as a team,” he says. “I particularly enjoy team sports because I find that they are the best way to make friends. Since you're forced to call each other by name in order to facilitate chemistry, rely on each other to make correct decisions, and run the right plays, it fosters strong teamwork. By the end, win or lose, you all feel like you've gone through something together, creating a special bond that is very difficult to find in other activities. Additionally, I love grabbing dinner together as a team after a match and feeling like we've earned it through the exercise we've done.”

Peter says engaging in sports has played a crucial role in maintaining a healthy worklife balance during Dental School. “It gives 8

me something to look forward to when I'm trying to find my motivation to get through a tough clinic session, especially during those hours after lunch when I can feel the mental fatigue setting in,” he says.

To someone considering taking up a sport, Peter recommends joining a social team.

“That way you are pre-committed to a match which makes it easier to motivate yourself to go, even on days that you feel lazy and don't want to,” he says. “It's also a great opportunity to stay in touch with current friends and make new ones. Not to mention, I find it such a fun way to stay active and fit. We actually have a group chat full of current dental students and dentists around WA, and we meet up every Sunday to play pick-up basketball at the UWA Basketball Courts. It's been a great way for me to meet practicing dentists, and for them to remind me that they can smoke me with both their basketball handles and dental hand skills. Surely pull up if you're a dentist and want to blow off some steam on Sunday afternoons!”

LAINE RASMUSSEN Australian football Laine Rasmussen has been playing Australian football for 25 years – he has played 100 games for West Perth in the WAFL, was part of the 2013 WAFL premiership team and played for the WA state team in 2014.

“It has always been my way to relax and switch off after a busy day or week,” he says.

“I've also made a lot of lifelong friends through football, which I am grateful for. It's definitely helped me maintain some balance in my life.”

To someone considering taking up Australian football, Laine says to give it a go.

“Clubs are always welcoming of new players and there's competitions suited to everyone,” he says.

CHRISHAN FERNANDO - Weightlifting Chrishan Fernando started weightlifting casually during university, but after graduating, discharging from the military and moving to Perth in 2022, he started to take it as a serious hobby and passion.

“I enjoy seeing myself progress each time I step into the gym,” Chrishan says. “After or before work it is a good destress activity as I can focus my energy on something other than my clinical work.”

Chrishan says after taking weightlifting more seriously he has incorporated it into his lifestyle and has offered many benefits.

“I guess the most beneficial is allowing me to have a clearer mind,” he says. “Trust me when I say that it has also been quite handy with some tricky extractions!

“In terms of work/life balance, focusing on a hobby such as weightlifting away from dentistry puts things on a bigger perspective,” he adds. “As a recent graduate it has allowed me to prioritise my physical and mental health before my clinical work and practice.”

To another dentist considering taking up weightlifting, he recommends investing in a personal trainer – someone who also understands the physical demands of dentistry. “You can learn workouts from YouTube but as if you would learn how to floss properly from a dentist, you should learn how to weightlifting safely and efficiently from a personal trainer,” he says. “I would also recommend doing fitness classes too. This is where you can meet people from other walks of life, and meet others with similar goals as yourself.”

MELANIE MCALPINE – OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING When she is away from her periodontal practice, you’ll find Melanie McAlpine focusing on Olympic Weightlifting.

“I started CrossFit approximately 10 years ago,” she recalls. “I really enjoy CrossFit for the combination of weightlifting, cardio and gymnastics. In recent years, I have drifted more towards Olympic Weightlifting on its own, with a focus on technique and increasing weight rather than reps.

Functional training using free weights is far more transferable into improving daily life than using a machine to define individual muscle shape and volume.”

Melanie says she finds weightlifting to be the best combination of maintaining flexibility, bone density and muscle volume. “Women

‘of a certain age’ can lose all of these quite quickly and I have plans to be active right through until my senior years; now is the time to put in effort to maintain what I have,” she says. “It is as much about maintenance as exceeding my personal best. Dentistry and the associated computer time creates a poor posture and a lot of tightness across the chest as well as lack of flexibility. I know when I’ve been training well because I can spend 12+ hours on the dental tools and walk away feeling fit, ready to engage with my family.

“One of my favourite parts is the look on people’s face when I tell them I’m aiming for my 100kg deadlift, or that I lifted three to four tonnes before arriving at work this morning." adawa.com.au

Empathy, kindness and optimism

Dr Shanash Bishnulall is making a difference with Healing Smiles, both as a treating dentist and behind-the-scenes.

Healing Smiles Dr Shanash Bishnulall began volunteering with Healing Smiles in 2020. After initially volunteering as a treating dentist (providing mostly surgical or multiple extractions), she became interested in the non-clinical behind-the-scenes happenings and joined the Committee with Drs Jacinta Vu, Tracey Gold and Lida Sayadelmi.

“I had experience volunteering with many other wonderful organisations, but the goals and values of Healing Smiles, and the amazing Committee members are close to my heart,” Shanash says. “My continued ability to treat Healing Smiles patients probono is largely due (with huge thanks!) to my colleague and the owner of Claremont Dental, Dr Dominic Etheridge.”

It was actually through volunteering with Healing Smiles that Shanash was offered

her position at Claremont Dental. “I was performing a surgical extraction for a Healing Smiles patient at his wife Dr Kate Etheridge’s practice, as I was able to do the procedure but did not have a clinic to do so. I mentioned to her I was looking for a new position, and she mentioned Dom was looking for someone with my skills – the rest is history!”

Shanash says volunteering with Healing Smiles has been eye-opening. “Having these patients come to me with such trust and hope despite their experiences in the past, is incredibly humbling,” she explains.

“Many I see only once for relief of pain or on an emergency basis, but I try my best to create as much positivity in their experience with me as possible and focus on the future of rebuilding their smile. adawa.com.au

“Volunteering for Healing Smiles has been extremely rewarding but can also be challenging,” she adds. “Meeting and treating women who share their stories of emotional and physical trauma can be difficult. This is particularly so when I provide treatment to address damage that has occurred to the mouth such as extracting broken teeth. I remember clearly that when explained to a patient that there was no other option except removal for a heavily damaged tooth, she broke down crying and told me she felt like she was letting her abuser win. Volunteering with Healing Smiles is not only about providing dental treatment, but also empathy, kindness and optimism.”

Shanash says it is always humbling how grateful patients are for not only the treatment provided, but the fact that there are people out there cheering for them and their successes, to help them move forward and live in dignity without pain and shame of their dental health.

Each patient also brings a new experience.

“I try to connect with each one as much as possible in the time we have and help them understand the support that is available for them,” she says.

As well as volunteering for Healing Smiles, Shanash also volunteered at the recent

Dental Rescue Day at OHCWA. “The Dental Rescue Day was a brilliant experience all around, and the day was organised thanks to Dr Tracey Gold,” Shanash says. “It was a positive atmosphere being together with the other volunteers and meeting such a range of people. My area of interest is surgical extractions, and it was a highlight to be able to guide some of the new graduates on techniques I routinely use.

“The most rewarding aspect of volunteerism is the overall gratitude and respect I’ve gained for the culture of volunteerism we have here in WA, and the community spirit in taking care of one another, especially those less fortunate,” Shanash adds. “I truly believe in paying it forward and have seen firsthand how small acts of kindness help propel people forward to do the same for others.”

To other dentists thinking about volunteering, Shanash says don’t think twice – and to go for it. “We are so fortunate to live in Australia, and as dentists to have a niche set of highly valued skills, that are so underserviced in many vulnerable communities,” she says.

“If you are able to volunteer in any capacity, there is no effort too big or small.”

The experience of a lifetime

At ADAWA, we are thrilled to assist some of our student members give back by attending a trip with the Kimberley Dental Team. We spoke to the recipients about their experience.

CHRIS LEE Tell us about your experience with the Kimberley Dental Team and what the experience meant to you?

My team during the week was mostly based at the Halls Creek Hospital but we would also split the team with the other travelling to schools and communities around the area. We provided a whole range of dental treatment for both children and adults, which included cleans, restorations, extractions and dentures to fissure sealants and stainless steel crowns. I was extremely fortunate to be able to work with the Kimberly Dental Team and was greatly inspired by the community response to the service that Jan and John have been providing tirelessly over these years.

What were some of the highlights?

My highlights as a dental student were learning from the wealth of experience of the members of the team and given the opportunity to provide treatment under their tutelage. I greatly enjoyed the school visits from turning a classroom into a dental clinic and seeing the children excited to have the KDT visit their school.

What has this volunteering experience taught you that you think will be valuable as a future practitioner?

I was humbled by the amount of complexity involved with community health and it has given me a greater appreciation for dentistry as a component in a wider health context.

It has further encouraged my passion for

volunteering and providing healthcare for where it’s needed most.

Do you have a message to ADAWA about receiving funding for the trip?

I greatly appreciated ADAWA for providing this generous scholarship. Being a part of the KDT has truly been a highlight of my time at Dental School.

Do you have a message to The Kimberley Dental Team about this experience?

Thank you Jan and John for all your hard work, dedication, and commitment in running the KDT! I could not have asked for a better experience…except for flooding the kitchen.

What would you say to other students thinking about joining the Kimberley Dental Team on a future trip?

Apply! The experience of remote dentistry is a greatly rewarding experience that will shape your outlook as a future health professional and role in community health for the better.

JOSHUA DING Can you tell us about your experience with the Kimberley Dental Team and what the experience meant to you?

My experience with the Kimberly Dental Team was an amazing one that not only improved my dental clinical skills, but also exposed me to some of the amazing communities in the Kimberly.

What were some of the highlights?

Highlights of my trip included interacting with the communities of Bililuna and Balgo.

In addition, I was fortunate to be able to learn from the very experienced tutors, as well as from the nurses that were helping us out, which enabled me to grow as a clinician and person during the trip. In addition, the road trip was fantastic seeing the terrain as well as the beautiful sun setting over the Kimberly. Furthermore, in Balgo we had the opportunity to visit the Warlayirti arts centre, which had lots of vibrant and meaningful Aboriginal artwork.

What has this volunteering experience taught you that you think will be valuable as a future practitioner?

The opportunity has taught me not only about how to improve my dental skills, but it has also enabled me to develop my skills in working as a team. Furthermore, the opportunity to work within rural and remote Indigenous communities was very rewarding.

Do you have a message to ADAWA about receiving funding for the trip and to the Kimberley Dental Team about the experience?

I would like to thank ADAWA for funding the trip for myself. In addition, I would like to thank my KDT group, John Owen, Jan Owen, John Hearne, Greg Celine, Ruth Warden, Tracy Sandercock and Karen Bowman for being the most amazing team and for all the banter we had on the trip. We were definitely the A team!

What would you say to other students thinking about joining the Kimberley Dental Team on a future trip?

To future students planning to go on KDT, in short, I would highly recommend it. Not only will you be able to develop your dental skills, but you will be granted the opportunity to be able to do some rewarding work within our rural and remote communities. And that experience is priceless.

BREEANA REYNOLDS Can you tell us about your experience with the Kimberley Dental Team and what the experience meant to you?

During my trip we flew into Kununurra and worked mostly between Halls Creek and the Warmun community. I have not stopped talking about my experience and expect to continue this way for many years. I feel encouraged to continue volunteering in the future; being able to provide care and have a skill that is useful to the community was fulfilling and rewarding.

What were some of the highlights?

One of the highlights for me was meeting adawa.com.au

people who have been visited by the KDT in previous years. I observed how much more confident they are in the dental chair; these patients were typically less anxious with higher oral health literacy than perhaps other patients with little experience in a dental setting.

What has this volunteering experience taught you that you think will be valuable as a future practitioner?

I learned so many things – about dentistry, about Four-wheel-driving, about the friends I travelled with, about the food stocked in groceries in rural towns. My main takeaway and what sticks with me the most, is the inter-personal communication and patient management I was able to develop upon during my time in the Kimberley.

Do you have a message to ADAWA about receiving funding for the trip?

As a long-term student, there are a lot of things we sacrifice, especially as other friends are working full-time and we find ourselves in a very different financial 18

position. I am extraordinarily grateful for the funding I received from ADAWA, without which I definitively would not have been able to get involved in this trip.

Do you have a message to The Kimberley Dental Team about this experience?

Thank you KDT for allowing me to be a part of this program; it was a great learning experience and an extremely valuable life experience. It was an eye-opening trip; this program John and Jan have set up is truly doing so much good. I feel very thankful to have had the opportunity to get involved.

What would you say to other students thinking about joining the Kimberley Dental Team on a future trip?

Don’t hesitate, just go for it! If you're like me and you’ve lived in WA all your life but not explored much of it, then you'll appreciate the opportunity to see some of the beautiful Kimberley views. I have no doubt the learning experience was invaluable. All round the trip was a lot of fun, with great people and great patients.

Building smiles and a stronger community.

Dentists at Rockingham Dental Centre share their commitment to giving back.

Rockingham Dental Centre has firmly embedded itself within its local community, not just as a provider of quality oral care for the last 60 years, but as a local business looking to give back to the community.

We sat down with Dr Hari Menon, one of the principal dentists, to delve into the practice’s history of generous culture.

Compassionate dentistry in action In partnership with the ADA Dental Health Foundation, Rockingham Dental Centre regularly dedicates its resources to Dental Rescue Days. During these events, the clinic allocates a portion of its schedule to treat referred patients pro bono. This includes offering seven chairs for a half or full day of free dental care. Additionally, the practice adopts patients, ensuring they receive comprehensive treatment without the financial burden.

Dr Hari Menon reflects on the clinic’s legacy of participation, stating: “We inherited the tradition, with Dr Russell Gordon’s longstanding involvement with the ADHF (now ADA Dental Health Foundation) and Dr Gerard Parkinson’s eagerness to have the clinic involved.

Now, we’re carrying the torch forward.”

Dr Hari Menon, alongside fellow principal dentist Dr Vilas Menon and their dedicated team, strives to host Dental Rescue Days at least once or twice a year.

“It’s more than just dentistry,” Dr Hari emphasises. “It’s a way for us to give back to the community and boost team morale.

It’s about being part of something greater than our daily routines.”

Dental Rescue Day, Rockingham Dental Centre treated 13 patients, with four of them being adopted for ongoing care.

A rewarding experience for all Treating patients during Dental Rescue Days is profoundly rewarding for the entire staff. Dr Hari recalls touching moments, saying: “We’ve had patients in tears because they can smile again, thanks to their new teeth. There are countless moments like these.”

However, he also highlights the importance of understanding that patients’ life situations can be complex. “You will often hear the challenges some individuals have faced often related to homelessness, drug/alcohol addiction or even refugees who have fled from other countries.

“It really makes you appreciate how lucky we are and reminds you that some of the daily problems we run in to seem quite insignificant compared to some of the challenges these patients have faced.”

A culture of giving Rockingham Dental Centre’s commitment to giving extends beyond Dental Rescue Days. Some of their dentists continue caring for adopted patients, completing treatment, and ensuring their dentition is fully restored.

Others participate in the Healing Smiles program. The practice is also deeply rooted

in the Rockingham community, sponsoring local sports teams and actively participating in community events. “We even did a sleepout with the Salvation Army, connecting with council members and patients, gaining a fresh perspective on our community’s needs,” Dr Hari says.

Advice for other practices To dental practices considering hosting their own Dental Rescue Days, Dr Hari offers this insight: “It’s a win-win situation. Meet Dr Hezel Cohen

Prior to his upcoming course in March, we caught up with Dr Hezel Cohen.

When asked what initially drew him to dentistry, Hezel recalls being six or seven-years-old sitting in the waiting room of our family dentist.

“I heard the high-speed handpiece and thought, ‘WOW that sounds quick, I would like to drive that thing!’ I say this tongue-in-cheek,” he laughs. “I guess I love working with my hands and I enjoy helping people, so I sort-of just fell into dentistry.”

He adds, since Dental School, he has enjoyed Prosthodontics – all things fixed and removable. “However, I did not specialise

in Prosthodontics to become a specialist,” he says. “I worked for a prosthodontist, and one day he gave me an articulated case and asked what I would do. I had no idea how to treat this patient, and, I had no idea that I knew so little. So, to gain understanding, knowledge, and skill, I set out on the Prosthodontic path.”

Hezel also works in the Maxillofacial Department at Royal Perth Hospital treating trauma and oncology patients, and says this is challenging, sometimes heartbreaking, but rewarding.

Hezel will be presenting ‘Partial Denture Design’ in March – a course about removable prosthodontics, with a focus on partial denture design.

A look back to early dentistry

Located in Harvey House at King Edward Memorial Hospital, the museum features a dental workshop and surgery exhibit, where you will see many interesting displays that demonstrate just how much dentistry has changed in WA. We teach our children that ‘kindness counts' but is this a truth or a fairytale? And if kindness truly does count, in what way? And how? Dr Annalene Weston, Senior Dentolegal Consultant at Dental Protection argues that kindness is the simplest form of risk management we have.

Kindness is not a new concept.

It features in Aesop’s fables which teach us that ‘no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.’

As a parent, I have read out loud countless hours of Dr Seuss – from ‘Fox in Sox’ to ‘Sam I Am’ these rhythmic parables roll off or tongues and permeate our psyches. Aesop, Dr Seuss and countless authors between tell our children to be honest and true, to themselves and to others, and our children march forth toward their destinies with their faces turned to the sun, knowing the rightness of these lessons.

Fast forward an undetermined period of time and I find myself reviewing claim after claim where not a trace of kindness can be found.

Is it that we should be kind unless we are at the dentist, or is it something else? And are we always kind to our patients? Should we be? Critically, are we kind to those within our teams, or too tired, too jaded and too (post) COVID-exhausted to care?

Research tells us that team-targeted rudeness likely underpins many adverse outcomes , and if we accept that to be true, then surely kindness DOES count in a broad variety of ways, some more obvious than others.

CIVILITY AS A RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGY Simply put, there is strong evidence that rudeness and incivility between healthcare workers impacts negatively on patient safety, as it leads to an increase in error rates, emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation (two of the three factors of burnout), and it effects our cognition and decision making. This makes sense, as how can you think clearly and confidently if you don’t feel safe in your environment because you are awaiting a rebuttal, mockery, criticism, or blame?

Conversely, the Civility Saves Lives Campaign seeks to promote positive

behaviours in healthcare and shares the evidence that supports why civility is so critical in patient safely.

Simple acts such as saying please and thank you, asking someone how they are, and making supportive gestures can decrease the likelihood of preventable patient error occurring because the team feel more supported, functional, higher performing and more confident to be open with each other.

PEOPLE DON'T SUE THEIR FRIENDS Studies have overwhelmingly demonstrated that patients are less likely to sue healthcare providers whom they like. That's not to say it can never happen, but the research reveals that patients are far less likely to complain about practitioners they like, and, whom they think like them. This relationship of mutual respect and trust is built on the foundation of rapport.

A deep dive into the basis of legal claims often uncovers a disconnect between the patient and the practitioner. Some people never really 'hit it off' and they experience a pervasive sense of awkwardness throughout every interaction. Others have a seemingly solid series of interactions right up until something within the treatment does not go to plan. At that moment in time, just when the patient needs the support and reassurance the most, the practitioner turns their back and withdraws their support, leaving the patient frightened and confused. For many, this confusion quickly turns to anger and resentment.

The reason for this perceived rejection or dismissal by the practitioner is often as simple as fear and distress.

Both experience and studies tell us that remaining connected to a patient who has suffered an adverse outcome under your care significantly decreases the likelihood that they are going to move forwards and make a formal complaint about you. Being kind is the best course of action. adawa.com.au

Many practitioners are however hijacked into placing a defensive barrier between themselves and their patient. Some are advised that ignoring kindness is best but rest assured, it is not.

ought to include an apology as ‘patients expect an apology from their doctors following harm due to an error. Apologies convey a sense of respect, mutual suffering and responsibility.”

SORRY SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST WORD

It isn’t just about expectation though, as the research demonstrates apologies are protective for the wellbeing of the person receiving the apology with measurable impact on their blood pressure, heart rate and breathing . Perhaps more surprisingly, the research also demonstrates apologising is beneficial to the mental and emotional wellbeing of the person giving the apology too.

One of the most human reactions when we make a mistake or harm another person is to say sorry. This simple expression of regret can vary from an utterance when you bump into someone at the supermarket to a formal televised (and in the case of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard) scripted apology. Regretfully, at some point in time this most human of reactions to distress caused to others was cast in some arenas to be an admission of liability. This precedent is both dangerous and unnecessary in Australian healthcare.

Firstly, with some minor State and Territory-based variances, fear of apologising is unnecessary as apology is protected by law. This means that an apology given to a patient after something goes wrong during their care, is not considered to be an admission of liability, and as such cannot be used against you in a court of law.

Certain behaviours are expected by our regulator when something goes wrong, with the Code of Conduct advising us that “When a person is harmed by healthcare (adverse events), practitioners have a responsibility to be open and honest in communication with the patient to review what has happened and report appropriately.” This really

CORNERSTONES OF KINDNESS We have thus far looked at three cornerstones of kindness – civility, open communication and apology.

Naturally, we need to consider one more keystone so our building does not fall down.

HUMILITY The antithesis of arrogance, humility is not necessarily a characteristic demonstrated by many healthcare providers. While the rhetoric may suggest this can be factored back to strongly type A centred personalities, a far simpler view is probably a more meaningful one in this case. In order to gain patient trust, practitioners project confidence, and rightly so, as modesty could easily be misconceived as lack of training or knowledge. So, confidence is a must, with humility becoming more of a relevant factor in two specific circumstances. The first is when a health provider knows in their heart

that they are uncertain about the treatment they are about the embark on, and the second is after an adverse event.

Critically, practitioners need to recognise the edge of their envelope of capability to know when it is appropriate to seek guidance or support from a peer. This simple step serves to increase both patient confidence and patient safety.

Next, humility is an essential mindset in the event of an adverse outcome. While professionalism, and the facilitation of continuity of care for the patient is critical, big-noting yourself and your skills and down-playing your contribution to the failure of care, perhaps blaming others or even the patient themselves is the first stop on a short trip to a complaint.

Civility, transparency in communication, apology and humility – could this be the new foundation to your success? Or perhaps if you simply relied on humanity, brushing away defensive practices and going with your gut human empathetic reaction to kindness over self-concern, this will achieve the same. Critically, kindness counts, and the simple step of being kind to a patient in adversity will help you both to heal.

Sleep bruxism is defined as a “repetitive jawmuscle activity characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible during sleep”.

For the diagnosis of sleep bruxism to be made, there must be: 1. The presence of regular or frequent tooth grinding sound occurring during sleep 2. The presence of one of more of the following clinical signs • abnormal tooth wear consistent with the above reports of tooth grinding during sleep, and • transient morning jaw muscle pain or fatigue and/or temporal headache and/or jaw locking upon waking consistent with above reports of tooth grinding during sleep 34

Due to the forces applied during episodes of sleep bruxism, it could lead to masticatory muscle hypertrophy, tooth surface loss, fracture of restorations, hypersensitive teeth, loss of periodontal support, temporomandibular disorders and headache. As such, it is important to identify potential risk factors early in patients with sleep bruxism.

ADA Dental Health Foundation Rescue Days It is always heartwarming to see practices give back by holding an ADA Dental Health Foundation Rescue Day! Thank you to the team at 123 Dental (for hosting their annual Dental Rescue Day in July), DB Dental Perth City (who held their first Dental Rescue Day in August), Braham Smiles (who hosted a Dental Rescue Day in September) and DB Dental Ellenbrook (who hosted their first Dental Rescue Day in October).

Fluoridated drinking water in Newman It’s good news for the oral health of residents in Newman, with the recent fluoridation of Newman’s water supply.

It means around 92 per cent of WA’s population has access to fluoridated drinking water.

Extracted teeth Extracted natural teeth, including Upper Molars, Lower Molars and Upper Anterior natural teeth are always needed for WA Dental CPD endodontic courses.

WADA Golf Kwinana Golf Club WADA golfers enjoyed a beautifully presented course, in a lush bushland setting, and those who spent some time off the fairways found many wildflowers amongst the Tuart trees.

The weather treated us well and the fairways and greens were presented magnificently again for this game.

The winner for the day was Frank Welten on 37 points, taking second spot was Simon Tee on 34 points on a countback from Michael Welten on 34 points in third place.
