Welcome!

Let us introduce ourselves - We’re the Adaptive Clothing Collective. the hard work out of finding items that are both functional and fashionable for yourself and your loved ones. We hope you find it useful.

Founded by three of Australia’s leading and homegrown adaptive and inclusive fashion labels, JAM the label, The Shapes United and Christina Stephens.

We decided to form an industry collective to bring strength and message unity to the media, retail and fashion industries. We truly believe that as an emerging industry we are stronger together and can provide better choices and opportunities for our valued customers (that’s you!).

ow would you like to see change in the disability fashion space?

What needs to change and how?

Disability fashion does function well but fashion is one of those things

that is very individual. For example, I love sequins but completely understand that they’re not very practical or functional for some.

I’d like to see brands like Christina Stephens available at mainstream bricks-andmortar retailers so that I can touch and feel the garment before buying.

hat would you love to see under the Christmas tree (for yourself) this year?

Travel vouchers! I have so much travel to catch up on and can’t wait to get going again.

hat’s your Christmas day outfit looking like this

year?

For anyone who knows what summer in Brisbane is like, I’ll be opting for light, flowing fabrics.

My body can no longer regulate temperature and a prosthetic leg also means I heat up easily. Perhaps a maxi dress or a singlet and skirt?

INTRODUCING GABBY AZZOPARDI

H

ow would you describe your role / profession / modelling career?

I would describe my modelling career as slow but fun! It’s has been a long road to get where I am today with Zebedee Management. Especially with me having autism and having sensitivity with certain fabrics, but I wouldn’t change it at all. The high and lows are what make me who I am, and I’m glad I can share with everyone.

W

hat are your greatest challenges and delights doing what you do?

My greatest challenges would be that I can be awkward at first site and meeting new people for the first time, but after that first meet and greet, I’m comfortable and super outgoing. Another one would be getting rejected over and over, but I get right back up and keep going knowing that its not me personally. The delights are being able to open the fashion world in Australia to people with disabilities whether there are invisible or physical, and being different is always fun! Meeting everyone on the day of the photoshoot or whatever I’m doing is amazing especially making connections with everyone, from the other models or people in front of the camera/phone, the photographer/videographer, makeup and hair stylist, the clothing stylist and the people who organise it, the environment is amazing in general.

ow would you like to see change in the disability fashion space?

What needs to change and how?

What I would like to see in general, is move exclusive catwalks from everywhere in Australia and the world honestly, especially when casting someone with a certain feature/disability for a short film/movie/ TV series.

I have also seen on interviews where a person with a disability was hired but then replaced because the work environment was not suitable instead of ensuring this was established in the first place.

What needs to change is how castings, and people in general look at and treat people with disabilities, because people like me have an amazing work ethic and will put our heart and soul into whatever job we do! I love that these amazing people from The Shapes United, JAM the label and Christina Stephens have open the door to include people like me into the fashion world, and help us adapt to the environment and help make us feel safe and included. We also need to be shown in mainstream media all over the magazines, social media, movies, tv series and more, no matter the challenge.

W

hat would you love to see under the Christmas tree (for yourself) this year?

Ahh I don’t know what I would like under the Christmas tree, I’m bad at making choices in terms of what I would like, but I’m a big lover of shoes, makeup, horse riding,

tattoos and piercings and funky hair colours. I would like for everyone out there who are in similar position like me, to not be afraid to put yourself out there and be unapologetic for being yourself, because it took me awhile to figure that out and I’m super happy with myself now, that I can be myself and not feel like shit for being who I am!

hat’s your Christmas day outfit looking like this year?

I haven’t thought what I would wear on Christmas Day, but it would most likely include a pair of black skinny jeans, some type of platform shoes, thick eyeliner and a bold coloured lip, with maybe a cute updo or a cute headband.

ell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a personal stylist, a scientist and an outdoor enthusiast. I love looking at style from a scientific perspective - catering to each person’s specific needs.

I have scoliosis, nerve pain, and an asymmetrical body. My mum had Multiple System’s Atrophy and was in a wheelchair. Different needs, but the right clothes enable us both to look and feel good, with enough energy left to enjoy life.

hat would be your #1 shopping tip be for people looking for adaptive products?

My #1 shopping tip for people looking for adaptive clothing is to think about all your needs - not just the adaptations you want, but also your lifestyle and your personality.

These days you don’t have to choose between having clothes that are easy to put on and clothes that you feel great in.

H

ow would you describe your Christmas style?

I like to keep things simple for Christmas. There is enough else going on

without agonising over getting dressed. I generally opt for a red dress or top in an interesting shape depending on the event.

re you organised or a last minute Christmas Eve shopper?

I’m generally organised with my shopping. I like to have a list and shop early.
