Arthur Morrisson (1765-1837) was appointed Alderman in 1808 and was later Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1835. Initially Arthur was the proprietor of the Mail Coach Tavern in Dawson Street and subsequently a hotel at 28 Frederick Street. He leased no. 1 Dawson Street in 1817 and converted the building into a hotel. Often referred to as ‘Morrisson’s’, but was actually the Leinster Tavern. It was not until after his death in 1840 that the name officially became the renowned Dublin hotel, Morrisson’s. Arthur and his family lived at Lilliput (Riversdale) in Donnybrook. He was responsible for many improvements in the area such as new roads, pathways and assisting in the building of the Anglesea Bridge. The obelisk erected in his memory still stands today.
The presentation was made by Edward Joshua Cooper M.P. (1798-1863) of Markree Castle in Co. Sligo. Edward is best known for his interest in astronomy and the creator of Markree Observatory. The observatory was home to the largest refractor of the early 1830s, which had a 13.3 inch aperture Cauchoix of Paris lens. Notable discoveries include the asteroid 9 Metis in 1848.

This magnificent fountain is cast from the model of the iconic Three Graces, daughters of Zeus by the French sculptor Germain Pilon (1528-1590). The original was commissioned by Catherine de Médicis (1519-1589) to house the ashes of her husband King Henri II of France (1519-59). Jean-Jacque Ducel (1801-1877) transformed the model into a fountain probably in the third quarter of the 19th century. The configuration of the original is surmounted by a gilt bronze urn above the heads, whereas the fountain projects a pond on a decorative support. The Ducel foundry was renowned for casting sculptures based on original versions that were held in museums. Ducel was also a retailer, and it is recorded that works were supplied throughout Paris from as early as 1810 in the Pas-de-Calais. At the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle it was noted by critics that ‘Ducel is the great manufacturer of works in cast-iron, to whom Paris is so largely indebted for the grace and elegance that supply so many of the adornments of its streets’. Ducel sold the factory in 1878 to the Fonderie de la HauteMarne and all the works were bought by the Val d’Osne foundry. The model for this fountain was also used by Antoine Durenne in the late 19th century. A similar fountain made by the Ducel foundry can be found in the town of Chinon, France.

€ 10,000 - 15,000
Like many sculptors active in England during the 17th and 18th centuries, John van Nost was of foreign origin. A native of Flanders, van Nost was likely drawn to England by its growing wealth and the opportunities for patronage that came with it. His earliest known work in England dates to around 1668, when he was employed at Windsor Castle under the architect Hugh May. From there, van Nost went on to build a successful career, creating church monuments and chimneypieces for aristocratic clients. As the art historian George Vertue observed, van Nost became “a master of reputation and left behind him a good fortune” (quoted in Gunnis, op. cit., p. 279).

The sphinx, an enduring symbol of power, mystery, and vigilance rooted in ancient Egyptian mythology, has captivated the imagination of artists, architects, and collectors across centuries. Its presence in Western art was revitalised through successive waves of Egyptomania, most notably during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, culminating in the widespread adoption of Egyptian motifs across a range of decorative arts.
A pivotal moment in the dissemination of Egyptian imagery occurred in the early nineteenth century with Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign (1798–1801), which gave rise to Dominique Vivant Denon’s ‘Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte’ (1802). Denon, then Director-General of the Musée Napoléon (now the Louvre), chronicled his observations through richly detailed engravings, introducing a European audience to the visual vocabulary of ancient Egypt. His publication became instrumental in popularising Egyptian architectural and decorative elements in the Neoclassical and Regency periods.
However, interest in Egyptian themes predates this moment. A particularly important early example of Egyptian Revival design is Johann Melchior Dinglinger’s Altar of Apis (1731), the last major work of the court jeweller to Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Dinglinger drew his inspiration from Bernard de Montfaucon’s influential ‘L’antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures’ published between 1719 and 1724, a comprehensive compendium of antiquities widely referenced throughout the eighteenth century. Notably, the sphinxes flanking Dinglinger’s Altar of Apis, depicted with female heads and nemes-style headdresses, closely resemble the present lot, both in pose and in iconographic detail.
The Meissen porcelain manufactory also explored Egyptian Revival themes. Sculptor Johann Gottlieb Kirchner created a pair of sphinxes resting on volute-like plinths and wearing tightly fitted bonnets with pleated temple scarves, elements echoed in the current sculpture, further underscoring its stylistic lineage.
In Northern Europe, the integration of sphinxes into garden design was especially prominent. Lukas von Hildebrandt’s Belvedere Gardens in Vienna exemplify this practice, with numerous Rococo sphinxes featuring mannerist interpretations of Egyptian elements such as the nemes headdress. These figures, often depicted with female torsos and lion bodies, were intended not only as decorative features but as symbolic protectors of cultivated space.
The use of lead for garden sculpture became increasingly popular in Britain and Northern Europe from the late seventeenth century onward. Lead ornaments were well suited for the growing demand for its durability, easier cast process as well as they were more cheaply available than bronze, stone or marble. Lead allowed for more fine decorations of figures, urns and architectural ornaments. Foundries such as those operated by John Cheere in London, and later by companies like Coade and Crowther, produced a wide range of lead garden ornaments that combined classical and revivalist themes. The present example follows this tradition, its patina reinforces its intended role as an enduring sculpture intended for a landscape setting.
The design of the present lot, a recumbent lioness-bodied sphinx with breasts and a nemes-style headdress, also recalls the clock mounts attributed to André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732), the master ébéniste of Louis XIV. A notable comparison can be drawn with a Boulle style clock in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Rogers Fund, 58.53a–c), engraved by Pierre-Jean Mariette circa 1707, which features similar figural elements. Boulle’s legacy is closely intertwined with that of Claude Ballin, a distinguished goldsmith and metalworker who also worked in the court of Louis XIV. Among Ballin’s notable works is a series of thirteen bronze garden urns designed for the Parterre du Midi and the Parterre du Nord at the Palace of Versailles. An example of these urns depicts a pair of sphinxes seated atop scallop shell and lion mask handles, a design that was later reproduced in the 19th century, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Ballin’s artistry. An example of this revival is a pair of lead sphinx pattern urns, modelled after Ballin’s originals, which were auctioned by Christie’s in 2002. This highlights Ballin’s exceptional craftsmanship and his lasting influence on garden sculpture, as well as on subsequent generations of artists and artisans.
Although the exact origin of the present lead sculpture is not known, it is likely of later date. Nevertheless, its form and iconography draw directly from the extensive tradition of Egyptian Revival design established in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. From garden ornament to imperial interior, the sphinx was transformed into an emblem of cultivated taste, artistic erudition, and aesthetic grandeur, an enduring legacy which this piece perpetuates.

The Medici Lion, with its striding pose and paw resting upon a sphere, became a widely adopted sculptural type in eighteenth-century Britain and Ireland, particularly within the context of the Palladian revival. The model derives from a Roman marble of the second century AD and a pendant carved in 1598 by the Roman sculptor Flaminio Vacca (1538–1605), commissioned for the Villa Medici in Rome by Ferdinando I de’ Medici (1549–1609), Grand Duke of Tuscany. Installed to flank the villa’s garden staircase and later moved to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, the pair came to symbolise classical authority, dynastic power, and Renaissance grandeur.
By the mid-18th century, British and Irish sculptors and masons were producing carved stone interpretations for architectural and landscape settings, particularly as gate or terrace ornaments. One of the most refined interpretations of the type was carved by Joseph Wilton (1722–1803) in 1759 for Kedleston Hall, exemplifying the neoclassical interest in classical form, anatomical precision, and sculptural grandeur. Limestone examples of the period, like this pair, embody the same muscular modelling, poised posture, and symbolic composure, qualities that aligned with Enlightenment ideals of reason, restraint, and imperial order.

The four pillars of the portico of Mote Park House, Co. Roscommon are one of the most significant physical remnants of the former glory of the Crofton estate. With the sole exception of the stately Lion Gate which was lovingly restored by the Roscommon Heritage Group in 2016 and reinstated at the entrance of the estate, now a popular walking trail and conservation area. The elegant Ionic pillars were a major part of the house’s refurbishment designed by architect Sir Richard Morrison (1767-1849) in the mid-19th Century. Morrison is recognised of course as one of Ireland’s very best 19th century architects and his mark is visible in both public and private buildings nationwide, including Cashel Cathedral, Botany Bay at Trinity College Dublin, Cangort Park House in Offaly and Kilruddery House in Wicklow to name a few. His work on Mote Park, was typical of his best-known commissions which usually called for a complete remodel of an existing building to compete with the style in Britain and the Continent from where the reigning families drew their inspiration.
The Croftons have been in residence around the Mote region of Roscommon since at least 1579 when John Crofton was appointed Auditor General of Ireland by Queen Elizabeth I. There has been a substantial structure of note on the site of Mote Park House since 1627, when George Crofton constructed a stone building, defensive in nature, for his family to reside in. Over the decades that followed, the demesne expanded to accommodate the requirements of the ruling class. The original structure was replaced by Mote Park House in the late 18th century by Edward Crofton, unfortunately standing only 10 years before its destruction by fire. This was then replaced with a formal stately home with additions by aforementioned architect Sir Richard Morrison in the Neoclassical taste, again destroyed by fire in 1860. Mote rose once more from the ashes under the Crofton family and saw the dawn of the 20th century though it suffered greatly under the Land Acts and the involvement of the Irish Land Commission. The house fell into disrepair when the Crofton family eventually dispersed
in the 1950s and the property was sold. Finally, Mote Park house was demolished by explosives in September 1959 under the Irish land Commission, essentially eliminating at least four hundred years of architectural history from the Roscommon landscape. A detailed account of the Crofton family estate has been excellently detailed by author Paul Connolly in his book on the subject ‘The Landed Estates of County Roscommon’.
The 21st century observer of Mote Park House benefits greatly from the photographs of the late 19th century captured by Augusta Caroline Crofton (1839-1928) a sister of the 3rd Baron Crofton, and later wife of Luke Gerald Dillon of Clonbrock, Galway. Augusta’s photographs, comprising of lantern slides and glass negative were acquired by the National Library of Ireland in 1977 and are now known as The Clonbrock Collection, and acknowledged to be one of the most significant photographic collections in Ireland’s history. This excellent resource clearly depicts the former structure of the photographer’s childhood home Mote Park House, and in particular the portico entrance included in this sale, which appears to have been the main location chosen for portraits of the Crofton dynasty. We note in particular, the striking image of Lord Arthur Edward Lowther Crofton, 4th Baron Crofton (1866-1942) standing leisurely in the portico and reading an issue of The Country Life in 1904. Similarly, a sweet image of a younger Crofton kitted out in a rapier and brimmed hat with his leg bent readily on the base of the pillar in a daring display of bravado. The portico was thankfully salvaged by Fr. Brian Hanley prior to its demolition and placed on display at his own home Kedagh House, Galway, where it then entered the public sphere after his passing in 2012.
When tracing the spotted history of the house itself, it seems implausible that it was resurrected as it was, disaster after disaster. Perhaps it is fitting then that the Neo-Classical portico has resurfaced at market again, an exceptionally rare and recognisable vestige of Ireland’s landed gentry and domestic architectural heritage.

The Garnkirk Fireclay Company, established in 1831 by Mark Sprot (1780–1847) near Glasgow, became one of the leading producers of ornamental fireclay in Victorian Britain and Ireland. Drawing on the region’s high-grade refractory clay, Garnkirk specialised in finely moulded architectural and garden wares, including urns, pedestals, fountains, and statuary. Exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, its products were noted for their durability, precise modelling, and classical ornament—qualities that aligned with mid-19th-century demand for industrially produced, historically informed design. The company was also awarded a medal at the 1862 International Exhibition, reinforcing its position as a major supplier of neoclassical garden ornament. Garnkirk’s output was widely used across Britain and Ireland in both public and private settings, reflecting the integration of industrial manufacture into mainstream landscape and architectural design.
