The Beauty Edit By Tara O’Farrell Do you love make-up like we love make-up? Well then you will love this month’s Beauty guest editor, make-up artist and model, Tara O Farrell. We trust Tara and in the past she has given us some real treats in terms of the hottest products out there. She tells us what way to wear make up in the summer months while keeping everything from your lips to lashes in check. Her own blog is bursting with beauty favourites and Tara was happy enough to drop in and give us the low down on what should be on your beauty shelves and in your beauty bags this summer. Sizzleeeeee!! In the summer I swap my foundation for something a lot lighter so I always wear Stila HD Bronzing Beauty Balm. It gives the skin a hint of colour and a light coverage and has also has an SPF 30 in it, a dual product that works well on all skin types. Your lips can really dry out in the sun and some people can even get cold sores this time of year... I recommend using Burts Bees Lip Shimmer Balm. They protects your lips and taste delicious. They are also suitable for kids so don’t forget to pick one up for them also. It lasts ages though so it’s ideal for family holidays. Obviously exfoliating is very important for the skin all year round but especially in the Summer time and before tanning’. This See See body scrub was recently voted as best exfoliate under €30 in U magazine, it’s really good without drying out your skin too much. Before tanning I would pay special attention to my elbows, knees and ankles, anywhere that tends to be a bit dry.”

For the past couple of years I have gotten semi-permanent mink lashes applied for my summer holiday. It takes 1/2 hours and is completely painless. The results are amazing as you can see in the picture below. They last 4-5 weeks depending on how you take care of them. As I mentioned, I rarely wear make up in the sun so having this done is well worth is as I look so much more awake. ‘I always go to Allure in Drumcondra to get my lashes topped up. I love them.

I recommend a light spray tan before you go away, this will give you an instant confidence boost before stripping into your bikini on your first day. I am never too interested in getting a real tan and you can’t get a safer tan then a fake tan. I love Laurens Way Spray Tan and find it suits my skin without looking to heavy. I get a nice spray tan from Allure also, I trust them with all my beauty must haves’

Neostrata products are just amazing, the science behind it is what reels me in. I use a lot of their products but I love the enlighten range trio. It’s great for skin pigmentation and those red spots that can form into little patches of the skin.

Wax without worry WITH WAXPERT ELLEN KAVANaGH This month with caught up with the owner of Waxperts salon, Ellen Kavanagh. Waxperts has fast become the leading salon for all thing waxing with its boudoir style treatment rooms kitted out with plasma TVs as well as top of the range technology to make your waxing chore a waxing treat. Dublin born Ellen is right on point providing each client with the highest level of hygiene, service and most important…COMFORT. We were lucky enough to have Waxperts ingrown hair pads in our Chic Treat June box and if your tweets and facebook messages are anything to go by, you guys loved them too. Ellen explains how she couldn’t find a product to recommend to her clients for all those ugly red lumps and bumps that come from shaving and waxing, “Their wasn’t anything out there I felt I could recommend so I set about making my own”. After months of trying different gels, oils, formulas and masks she finally went for the individual pads we now see and love today. “Finally we decided on pre-soaked pads. Super convenient. They are infused with salicylic acid. This is the active ingredient that actually treats the ingrown hair and any bumps. They also contain panthenol which moisturises and rosemary which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The pads treat shavers or waxers, male and female.” Although Ellen had set her mind on providing the perfect ingrown hair pad, its seems to be a mutli tasking product working on other areas of the clients skin, “my clients call it the holy grail of multi-tasking” Ellen laughs as she explains how she has being told her pads work on everything from insect bites, acne and those dreaded red bumps on your upper arms known as keratosis pilaris, “Just wipe the pad on the area daily and the bumps will improve dramatically”. The salyclic acid found in the Waxperts ingrown hair pads is known to treat acne, and although there is only a small percentage in the pads there is enough to yield results. Hormonal breakouts and facial spots will be a thing of the past. This makes Waxperts ingrown hair pads a multi-tasking handbag hero for us and we give it the Chic Treat Seal of approval. A pack of 40 pads cost only €9.99 and are available from Waxperts salon, 78a George’s Street Lower. Dun Laoghaire. Or log on to www.waxperts.ie to find your local Waxperts stockist.

Ask The Experts In this edition of Chic Muse we decided to offer some beauty Wisdom. We get lots of comments and tweets after we send out our boxes asking how best to use a product or what products may suit certain skin types, so we decided ASK THE EXPERTS. We dug deep and found the most awesome skincare and beauty professionals and asked them what they would recommend. We managed to get a minute with Jeanne Brophy, leading skin specialist and bespoke facialist to find out why exfoliating can be so important for the skin to help with ‘cell renewal and anti-ageing’, while Skin expert, Deirdre Kennelly also takes a look at the question surrounding facial peels and SPFs, as well as some top waxing tips from Ellen Kavanagh about how to get the most out of your waxing.

Ellen has shared her top waxing tips and tricks just with us… • Do any hair removal 24-48hrs before applying tan. Even if it’s shaving! Otherwise the tan will settle in your open pores.

• Avoid caffeine and painkillers pre wax. They heighten your nerve endings and make your skin more sensitive. •For the most pain free wax, keep your appointments regular 4-6weeks is ideal. Exfoliate the area/s gently 24hours before. Look for a Waxperts Wax trained stockist and therapist. Always ensure you’re getting ‘hot’ or peelable wax on face, underarm and bikini. NEVER strip wax!! Try and relax. Take some deep breaths and avoid clenching! That’ll only make it worse! A good waxer will put you at ease.

•If you’re pregnant book all your appointments in up to roughly your due date. That way you won’t go too long where the hair would have a chance to grow strongest. •Nose, nipples, belly button trail and toes are all waxable so don’t be shy asking your therapist to include them.

•If you change your pill, any medication or face cream it can have a negative effect on getting waxed. So ask the salon and they’ll advise.

•Start getting your underarms waxed! You won’t have to shave anymore and there’s no BO as there’s no hair in the follicle for the bacteria to settle in. Once you start you won’t stop! Ellen Kavanagh www.waxperts.ie

Jeanne swears by creams containing, retinol! “Retinol stimulates cell turnover and keeps skin cells at a healthy level aiding delivery of active ingredients, smoothing rough skin, refining pores and helping to lighten pigmentation” Jeanne explains. “It also boosts collagen production helping prevent and treat lines, wrinkles and lack of tone. Retinol also reduces excessive sebaceous secretions helping problem or acne skins and balances production of pigmentation aiding a bright even skin tone as we age.” Jeanne says a good exfoliate is the key to any good skincare routine, not just for the face. “I love multipurpose products and I always go for one that hydrates and exfoliates, it gives the skin a little pick me up. I tend to go for a exfoliate that doubles up as a mask so when I’m having a relaxing night in I can leave it on for longer to get the full effect.” “At the moment I’m using the Total retinol A crème and Yon-ka Gommage 305 exfoliate” Both have made such a difference to my skin and any clients using it think the same. Jeanne Brophy www.jeannebrophy.com Deirdre jokes about how anytime she mentions home skin peels, people automatically think of Samantha Jones and that infamous scene for Sex and the City. “This is not what facial peels are about” explains Deirdre “Home Treatment Peels give you all the benefits of having an actual peel as it has a healthy percentage of active ingredients suitable for home use. With 10% AHA for sloughing away dead skin cells and 10% Citric Acid, excellent for brightening complexion it really does have a great mix, strong enough to have an effect, yet safe enough for using at home”. “The effects of the peels are great, no downtime what so ever, leaves you with a bright, smooth, radiant complexion.Long term use can help with fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and excessive sun damage. I challenge anyone to use a home peel and not see results” We’re up for the challenge Deirdre. “The NeoStrata Glycolic home use peel is perfect for first timers, it’s fairly easy to use and “is for all skin types so sensitivity is’nt an issue” ‘Deirdre always goes for a strong SPF whatever the weather “I always wear the Matrix Support SPF 30 even on cloudy days” Let’s face it, in Ireland that’s almost every day. “This not only helps repair sun damage with its on point mix of ingredients, it also helps to prevent future damage with the SPF for sun protection. The texture of this product is rich serum like, with natural oils giving a very smooth finish, great base for makeup also” Deirdre Kennelley Clinical Manager at Pharmed www.neostrata.ie

Results-wise, I was mucho impressed. I only seem to suffer with hard skin on my heels and the edges of my big toes so, there wasn’t much for the Softsole gel to work on. Nevertheless, almost the entirety of both feet shed a full layer of skin, leaving me with extremely smooth, baby-soft tootsies! @VivaAdonis

CALLING FOR AN SOS It seems you can’t turn on the TV or switch on the radio without hearing the lovely voice of Lisa Fitzpatrick. Not only has she taking over the airwaves but she has now added another string to her bow by launching her second book, Diet SOS. Her new book has been sitting pretty at the top of the best seller list. We caught up with Lisa to find out how it is all working out for her and to find out what tips this stylist extraordinaire has in store for you.

Lisa, Congratulations on Diet SOS. What gave you the push to write a book? I had planned on writing a second style book and when I met Kyle Cathie publisher Diet SOS I mentioned I can dress every size client because I’ve been every shape and size I know how they feel so we got chatting and decided it would be a healthy lifestyle book I decided to share my story You seem quite open when talking about what you once weighed, what made you change it all around and tackle weight loss? Apart from the fact I was dressing older to suit shape I was overweight it was my fault it started really hitting me when I was pregnant I looked 9 months pregnant the day I conceived. For anyone not familiar with the book, how would you sum it up? A honest journey of a working mum who saved a fortune on therapy by writing my feelings down, it also has recipes that will keep you on track. You have two books under your belt, what’s next for Lisa Fitzpatrick? I can’t believe it’s my second book! I do love having a dream floating in my head and actioning it to make it a reality, I’m on QVC with my book and have more UK plans. I’m a very lucky girl I’ve also just finished a road show with Special K visiting companies like RTE, Google, HQ, BOI and Paddy Power I really love my job. I’m also judging Galway races 31st July, which I’m very excited about. For anyone struggling with their weight, what would be your top tips? Stop Eating rubbish!! It’s as easy to eat well as to make the wrong choices. I try not eat after 7pm. Stop thinking about what you can’t have enjoy what you can. If you have a wobble move on don’t be too hard on yourself just be patient, it will take time but you will have a happier you after your journey and it will stay off. Just change your mind set. Diet SOS (€14.99) is available from all good book stores. Log on to fitzpatrickstyle.com for more
