Whilst at IKEA I have redesigned to completion over 25 rooms, 2 office spaces and been the lead designer on multiple IKEA marketing events from Northern Pride to The Northern Wedding Show, this portfolio highlights some of my best work as an Interior Designer at IKEA Gateshead.

With the North East’s largest wedding show on our doorstep and the influence of social media predominately promoting DIY; I teamed up with the Marketing specialists of IKEA to design and host the 2024 show, where we promoted tips & ideas of IKEA DIY for an affordable and personal wedding day.

A quick actioned re-fresh of the ‘seasonality’ sales display area and children’s play area within the store’s restaurant.

IKEA Gateshead has the largest restaurant in the North East hosting up to 600 people at any given time.

IKEA stores (UK) will have aspects of their restaurant based off my designs; The Reviewers stated that Gateshead’s Restaurant was the best example they’d seen so far across UK IKEA and kindly asked me to share a design package with ‘Service Office’ (IKEA operations / administration & lead designers) allowing them to develop a package to be sent to other stores to implement for next year’s review.

‘There is a huge opportunity to raise the quality perception of IKEA PAX and to nail the “build your own” element of PAX with huge opportunities for number of pieces per PAX and to strengthen IKEA’s low-price profile, as a high-quality low-cost retailer by amplifying our affordability message.

Sales within custom PAX solutions increased by 18.8%

The financial turn-over from this room-set increased the store budget resulting in a major re-build of the IKEA wardrobes department, furthermore making bedrooms the highest performing department for that tertial.

Gateshead’s Converted Terrace Houses

This roomset still performs to be the second hottest roomset in IKEA Gateshead - with a 53% Visitation rate.

The success of this roomset due to the extensive research and detail towards the local market led to me accepting a role of being the ‘Local Relevance Ambassador’ within the store. Actions made around the store increased ‘Customer Relatability’ which furthermore increased Sales, leading to store visitation from the manager of the new Chile, South American store, and leaders from seven other UK stores to present how we actioned local relevance.

Solution Sketches

The Gateshead upstairs flat housing market is known for their small kitchens. I wanted to show the customer a way to maximise storage to create a multifunctional space at such a low cost.

Due to the great performance of the Kitchen on the previous page, I was asked to design a similar kitchen with a higher budget to sale steer towards a greater quality kitchen with a similar layout.

Similarly to the previous Kitchen I completed, and now being an Ambassador within Local Relevance across the store, I captured the picture for this room, making sure that this kitchen was also extremely relevant to Gateshead’s housing market and the IKEA customer. This time representing the downstairs counter-part to the previous kitchen, in a converted Victorian Terrace.

In the summer of 2023, IKEA released a collection of products inspired by ‘original best-sellers’, vibrant and graphic products and textiles. This roomset was designed to be a ‘show-stopping’ room at the customer entrance to inspire customer’s to go bold in-line with the collection release.

IKEA Launch 4 2023 consisted of patterns and styles from original iconic IKEA products. I wanted to create a fresh base to extenuate these products whilst making a room which popped and ‘hit’ the customer as they walked around the store entrance.
