BALLARD Chartered on 11 June 1891, Occidental Lodge No. 72, Free and Accepted Masons, is the thirdoldest Masonic Lodge in Seattle.

Their initial meeting place is currently unknown, but by 1894 the Lodge was meeting at Mannay’s Hall, which was located on the northeast corner of the present-day intersection of NW Market Street and 22nd Avenue NW. Mannay’s Hall, later known as Sypher’s Hall, served as the meeting place of Occidental Lodge until 1904, when they moved about one block south to the top floor of the Ballard City Hall building, which was located on the northwest corner of the present-day intersection of Ballard Avenue NW and 22nd Avenue NW. Occidental Lodge continued to meet at Ballard City Hall until 1924, when they moved to their current Lodge building at the northwest corner of NW Market Street and 20th Avenue NW. This two-story brick masonry building was designed by architect Bro. William J. Bain and reportedly cost $40,000 (about $603,000 in 2020 dollars).

CAPITOL HILL/FIRST HILL By 1907, the ever-increasing membership of the Masonic Lodges meeting at the Masonic Hall at 2320 First Avenue strained the facilities of the antiquated building, which had been purchased from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in January 1902. Despite efforts to remodel the building to satisfy the demands for meeting space and better climate control systems, the unsatisfactory conditions at the Masonic Hall ultimately spurred efforts to create a new central Masonic Temple for Seattle. The Seattle Daily Times announced on September 26, 1907 that the approximately 1,500 members of the Masonic Bodies of Seattle were planning a $250,000 temple (about $6.8 million in 2020 dollars) at the southwest corner of Seneca Street and Harvard Avenue. The proposed building would have housed five blue Lodges (Arcana No. 87, Eureka Original Design of the Scottish Rite Cathedral No. 20, Ionic No. 90, St. Pacific Builder and Engineer, March 25, 1911, page 139.

John’s No. 9, and West Gate No. 128), two York Rite chapters, the Commandery of the Knights Templar, the Royal and Select Masters, the Scottish Rite, and the Shriners.

By late 1909, the Scottish Rite stepped away from the group planning a potential new Masonic Temple and announced that they would construct a new cathedral for themselves at the northwest corner of Broadway and Madison Street. Their plans were unveiled in the Seattle Daily Times on March 13, 1910. Later that year,

another article in the Seattle Daily Times declared that the York Rite bodies and Knights Templar Commandery were also withdrawing from the planning of a new central Masonic Temple, due in part to disagreements about the values and prices of the lots for the new Scottish Rite Cathedral.

Despite these conflicts among the various Masonic Bodies, the construction of the Scottish Rite Cathedral began in September 1910 and progressed rapidly. The cornerstone was laid on December 14, 1910, and the first meetings in the building took place in April 1911. Designed by architect Frank P. Allen, the Classical Revival style building was situated on a triangular-shaped lot which fronted 144 feet along Harvard Avenue and 109 feet along Broadway. Originally designed as a much taller, lavish, stone-clad, and expensive temple, the building was constructed as a much more modest and economical affair. The two-story, wood-frame building was built on a concrete basement, with the main floor of the building roughly level with Harvard Avenue.

In addition to the Scottish Rite, two blue Lodges, Arcana No. 87, and West Gate No. 128, moved out of the Masonic Hall downtown and met at the cathedral once the building opened in 1911. The building continued to serve as a meeting place for several Masonic organizations until the new Scottish Rite Temple was completed at 1155 Broadway East in north Capitol Hill in May 1961.

CENTRAL DISTRICT The architects Josenhans and Allan designed the two-story, brick masonry building at 27132715 South Jackson Street in 1905. It was built by contractor John Te Camp for August Greyerbiehl of the Star Carriage Works. Featuring stores on the ground floor and a hall on the second floor, Greyerbiehl’s Hall quickly became a popular meeting place for all manner of organizations in what is now known as the Central District of Seattle. Rainier Lodge No. 189, Free and Accepted Masons, was chartered on 13 June 1912. The Lodge met at Greyerbiehl’s Hall from 1912 until 1925, when they moved into their new Lodge building at South Main Street and 24th Avenue South.

COLUMBIA CITY Ark Lodge No. 126, Free and Accepted Masons, was chartered on 10 June 1903. The Lodge first met at the Knights of Pythias Hall, which was located on the east side of Rainier Avenue South just south of Ferdinand Street.

Ark Lodge continued to meet at the Knights of Pythias Hall until about 1906, when they moved to the Fraternal Hall on the south side of Ferdinand Street just west of Rainier Avenue South. They met at Fraternal Hall until they completed their new Lodge building in 1921. Their new building was designed by the architect J. L. McCauley and built at 4816 Rainier Avenue South in Columbia City. It was dedicated on 10 June 1921 by the Grand Master of Masons in Washington, Most Worshipful Brother James H. Begg. The $22,000 building (almost $317,000 in 2020 dollars) still stands as the home of Ark Cinema.

DOWNTOWN Chartered on 4 September 1860, St. John’s Lodge No. 9, Free and Accepted Masons, is the oldest existing Masonic Lodge in Seattle. St. John’s first met at Yesler’s Cook House and Hall for about one year, before they moved in 1861 to the building that housed the University of Washington.

The Lodge then met in the first Masonic Temple that was built in 1862 on the east side of Front Street between James and Cherry Streets, approximately where the present-day Doc Maynard’s Public House is located in Pioneer Square. Eureka Lodge No. 20, chartered on 4 September 1873, shared the Masonic Temple with St. John’s Lodge until the building was destroyed during the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. The Young Naturalist’s Hall on the University of Washington grounds then served as a makeshift Masonic Lodge until new permanent quarters could be arranged.

The second building in Seattle constructed specifically as a Masonic Temple was located at the northeast corner of Second Avenue and Pike Street. Built in 1892, this building served as the center of Masonic activities in Seattle until financial difficulties caused the property to be foreclosed upon in 1899. The Temple Association sold the building in February 1900, and the Masons in Seattle became tenants in the building which they had constructed. St. John’s continued to meet at the second Masonic Temple until September 1901, when they moved about one block to the northwest to the Knights of Pythias Hall, located at the southwest corner of First Avenue and Pike Street.

This building still stands to the south of Pike Place Market, though it has been altered somewhat over the years as it became home of the Economy Public Market and other businesses.

In January 1901, the Seattle Commandery No. 2 of the Knights Templar purchased an old meeting hall from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. This building at 2320 First Avenue became the third Masonic building in Seattle.

St. John’s Lodge voted to meet at the new Masonic Hall in January 1902 and received permission from Grand Lodge to move the following month. St. John’s joined Eureka Lodge No. 20, Arcana Lodge No. 89, and Ionic Lodge No. 90 at the new building, which also became home to West Gate Lodge No. 128, which was chartered on 10 June 1903. Seattle Lodge No. 164 was chartered on 17 June 1908 and also met at the Masonic Hall on First Avenue.

Besides the crowded conditions resulting from the large number of Masonic organizations meeting at the Masonic Hall, another one of the complaints about the building was that it was poorly ventilated and heated. Architect Bro. Ulysses Grant Fay designed a new $5,000 ventilation system for the building in 1910, but by several accounts the Lodge room was still heated by a stove located in the middle of the room well into the 1900s. Arcana Lodge No. 89 and West Gate Lodge No. 128 both moved to the new Scottish Rite Cathedral around 1913 to 1914. The building continued to serve as the home of several Masonic

organizations until 1916, when the fourth Masonic Temple was completed at Harvard Avenue and Pine Street in Capitol Hill.

The building at 2320 First Avenue still exists. The old tiled entry threshold spelling out the initials “F. & A. M.” can still be seen to this day.

FREMONT Ionic Lodge No. 90 and Doric Lodge No. 92 were both chartered on 14 June 1893. Respectively, they are the fifth and sixth oldest Masonic Lodges in Seattle. While Ionic Lodge No. 90 met downtown at the Masonic Temple at Second Avenue and Pike Street and later at the Masonic Hall at 2320 First Avenue, Doric Lodge No. 92 made its home in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood.

The Brethren of Doric Lodge first met at Society Hall in Fremont until about 1903, when they moved to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I. O. O. F.) Hall, which was also in Fremont.

Doric Lodge continued to meet at the I. O. O. F. Hall until their Lodge building was completed in early 1909. The two-story brick masonry temple was designed by the architect F. F. Travis and constructed by day work for a reported cost of $8,000 (about $224,000 in 2020 dollars). The cornerstone of the temple was laid on 13 February 1909. This building continues to serve as the home of Doric Lodge.

GEORGETOWN Home Lodge No. 100, Free and Accepted Masons, was chartered on 12 June 1895 and was the seventh Masonic Lodge to be chartered in Seattle. Home Lodge was established in Georgetown when the city was an independent municipality.

Georgetown was later annexed by the City of Seattle in 1910. Home Lodge met first at Ward’s Hall, and in 1901 relocated to Higgin’s Hall in Georgetown. Higgin’s Hall no longer exists. It was located at the northwest corner of the present-day intersection of Airport Way South and Corson Avenue South. The Brethren of Home Lodge then moved to Hamilton’s Hall, which was once located at the

The Lodge met at Hamilton’s Hall until about 1907, when they moved once again, this time to Horton’s Hall. The author has thus far been unable to determine the exact location of Horton’s Hall, but it may have been located in the Horton Building which was constructed across 12th Avenue South to the east of Hamilton’s Hall.

Home Lodge continued to meet at Horton’s Hall until their new temple building was completed in late 1927. Designed by the architectural firm of Stephens, Stephens and Brust, the three-story reinforced concrete frame building was built at the southeast corner of Ellis Avenue South and South Bailey Street. The building still exists, though it has been heavily modified over the years as it was used for various purposes after the Lodge moved out by about 1997.

GREEN LAKE Green Lake Lodge No. 149, Free and Accepted Masons, was chartered on 13 June 1906. The Lodge met at Thorn Hall (sometimes also referred to as Thorn’s Hall), which was located at the southwest corner of NE 72nd Street and Woodlawn Avenue NE in Seattle’s Green Lake neighborhood. Green Lake Lodge continued to meet at Thorn Hall until their new temple building was completed at Maple Leaf Place and East Green Lake Way, just a little under one block to the northwest.

The new Green Lake Masonic Temple was designed by the Seattle architecture firm of Bebb & Gould (who were both Masons) and built for a reported $30,000 (about $432,000 in 2020 dollars). Green Lake Lodge continues to meet in this building.

WEST SEATTLE Alki Lodge No. 152, Free and Accepted Masons, was chartered on 13 June 1906, the same day that Green Lake Lodge No. 149 was chartered. The exact location of their initial meeting place is unknown, but by 1911 they were meeting at West Side Hall, located at 2642 ½ California Avenue SW. This building was later known as Gallinger’s Hall, and then later became known as the Masonic Hall.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bro. Adam S. Alsobrook is a registered architect and architectural historian. He was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Maryland, Georgia, Virginia, and Texas. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, he worked in both the private and public sectors before he moved to Seattle, Washington in 2014. He is a member of University Lodge No. 141 of Seattle, Washington, where he was initiated on September 15, 2018, passed on December 17, 2018, and raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on April 20, 2019. Bro. Alsobrook is the owner of a cultural resource management and historic preservation consulting firm in Seattle.

This is the fifth research report that Bro. Alsobrook has written on the history of Masonic buildings in the Puget Sound region. His fourth research paper, which is a history of the University District Masonic Building in Seattle, will be published in September 2020. He is also working on a series of articles about other Masonic buildings in the Puget Sound region and Washington State.
