Laptops V.s. Desktops: So You decided it’s time to ditch that old microwave like PC and get ahead with times and buy a new up to date PC? Great but what to go with? The portable laptop or the standard good old desktop computer?

Laptop

PC

5|Page

I could go on forever on explaining why I prefer one option over the other but to be fair I would have to step out of my own shoes and pretend I’m someone else to see things from their point of view, never the less I figured out that the best solution to this is to include a chart with all the advantages and disadvantages of both options.

“I would have to step out of my own shoes and pretend I’m someone else to see things from their point of view”

Please note that I’m not talking about operating systems here (Apple/Windows/Linux) but about the hardware itself. I will be covering OS’s later in this mag.

Another important thing to take note of is the upgrade prices and possibilities. The Desktop Wins as almost anything can be kept upgradable at a low cost. When it comes laptops however it’s a totally different story as6|Page

-the parts needed for the upgrade cost almost double compared to desktop ones. But it does not stop there, the upgrade range is very limited as not everything can be upgraded, meaning your stuck with what you got for a time-

-frame. Sooner or later you will need to rebuy another laptop. Although generally speaking a good laptop will last you for over 5-7 years, at the end you will need to upgrade to keep up with time.

The Web browsers:

Google Chrome

Mozilla Firefox

Safari

7|Page

Internet Explorer

Opera

Open Source Plus Digital Magazine | Issue 1 October 2011 Adam Productions

If you can’t tell what operating system (OS) your running then your most probably using Microsoft Windows as it’s the number 1 used OS around the globe. Every windows OS regardless of the version comes packed with Internet Explorer also known as IE. While it gets the job done by loading your everyday websites and what not, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to one of the other web browsers. Why you ask? 2 things, security and features. While I’m not hinting in any way that IE is that bad when it comes to security, I do however insist that it lacks many great features found in other web browsers especially Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Basically, a basic browser that comes with the package.

8|Page

Internet Explorer 9

Now I would strongly recommend that you always keep IE up to date even if you don’t use it. Now I know that all of you would scream out WHY? The answer is simple, many software use IE settings and proxy as its base should the software have an online built-in browser namely STEAM.

To update IE, Go to Start button/orb at the far left bottom of your screen, All Programs, Windows update. Run it and it will inform you if there is an update for IE. Click on important updates link for full update list so you can check which update you want to install. Same for optional one’s.

Google Chrome Info. Google is overtaken the computer world, first Google search engine, Gmail and now Chrome. Rarely has Google gone wrong with its products and this is no exception. A great web browser that is gaining popularity very fast and has become the main browser on many PC’s including mine. What sets it apart is its amazing speed in both startup and loading pages along with its slick design that got copied by other browsers. Grab the latest version from: http://www.google.com/chrome Please note that in some very rare occasions, a website may not be supported yet thus not working. 10 | P a g e

Apple Safari Info. Just like IE for windows, safari is the basic built-in browser that comes with Apple OS. This web browser can also be downloaded for Microsoft Windows at: http://www.apple.com/safari/

Not much to say about it except that it has some features like exclusive HTML5 codlings and what not that will probably be useless if you’re a basic user.

11 | P a g e

Opera Info. Started out as a paid browser that got Free after sometime. A good we browser that you can play around with as it’s highly customizable but not that user friendly. Give it a try if you have time and you just might have it as your main browser. Note that it had problems with some sites due to compatibility issue. http://www.opera.com/

Security Software: With the increased usage of modern computers, came a problem. Viruses. What is a Virus? A program created to infect harm on the targets PC, steal information or corrupt files.

Malware: Designed to steal information and disrupt the user. Spyware: Monitor and collect personal information along with modifying user’s web browser and so on.

Mostly distributed by Torrent Files and via disguised download tricking you into thinking your downloading something else. There are mainly 3 types of extremely harmful viruses. 

Virus: Corrupts system files and cause system instability along with other undesirable effects.

12 | P a g e

Before you proceed to the next section for Free security software I must warn you that the best defense is not to get the virus in the first place. There are types of viruses that no software can remove or cause so much damage that it’s better to format and start all over while losing data.

Here are a few tips on how to avoid getting viruses. These tactics may reduce the chance but not eliminate the possibility. a. Always Scan USB Sticks and portable Hard Disks b. Never install something you’re not sure of c. Check for the file type before you double click it. An image can never be in an .exe format d. Scan your PC at least once a month or 2 e. Check the torrent or regular download size, a 2 hour video file with the size of 250KB is most likely fake or a virus.

Open Source Plus Digital Magazine | Issue 1 October 2011 Adam Productions

There are 2 types of known and good FREE anti-virus software out there:

Important Note: Never install more than one antivirus software on the same PC. By doing so you will disrupt both software’s job and will have slow, unstable system.

AVG FREE Edition

Microsoft Security Essentials

Can be found on:

Freely download at:

http://free.avg.com/wwen/homepage

http://www.microsoft.com/enus/security_essentials/default.asp x Requires more resource use then AVG but seems to detect more harmful software biased on reviews.

A stable and less resource consuming anti-virus software totally and legally FREE. You can of course spend some cash and get the paid edition which has more features if you feel like it but the free edition should protect you well.

13 | P a g e

Always uninstall the previous AntiVirus software before installing the other.

Totally FREE and LEGAL.

Graphics Design: If you have a PC then you most probably have pictures in it. Family stuff or work logos, you will most probably need to adjust or design them. Photoshop may be the number 1 tool for this but not many have it as its bit expansive besides many basic users only need small adjustments. This is why I will be listing the basic all around user friendly yet powerful Editor along with the Advance Photoshop like tool.

Backups: Backing up your personal or work files is a must in today’s era. Lost files, mistakenly deleted, crashed hard disk, corrupted files and so on… But before getting to the part of which media you should use to store your backups in let’s take a look at how you will create the backup itself. Storing the file its self is mostly a good idea, but combining allot of images in one container with a password is even better. For that you will need a compression program.

Not only dose 7-zip comprises, store and password protect your files for FREE. It can also split large files and open other types of stored files. Freely available at: http://www.7zip.org/ Install and you’re ready to go with its friendly design. You can zip it to many formats or its own.

Open Source Plus Digital Magazine | Issue 1 October 2011 Adam Productions

Now that we have our files stored it’s time to put them somewhere.

Option 1: CD Holds up to 700mb of data and is cheaply available everywhere. Recommended the Sony brand for high quality.

Option 2: DVD Holds up to 4.7GB of data and is the most commonly used type of backup. Sony brand is again recommended for high quality.

Option 3: Portable Hard Disk Can be bit costly but holds large amount of data. High care needed to be taken if storing data on this medium as any single fall can crash the hard disk and its data.

Flash Stick memory Basically a smaller Hard Disk
