Beijing is famous for pigeon whistle which has existed for thousands of years. Due to the civilization process and the increasing building density, there are fewer and fewer people keeping pigeons in the city. The disappearance of pigeon whistle culture is the representation of urbanization aggression and coexisting failure with nature.
The Pigeon Post, aims to rejuvenate the pigeons whistle culture and cure the citizens' anxieties of insecurity and fears in the pandemic condition by designing a series of special construction, creating ‘charming’ pigeon whistle for people who are isolated at home. Pigeon Post also responses to the dilemma of the vulerable people in a lockdown condition. Through research carried out by analyzing Chinese lockdown policies, the project develop a ‘pigeon post’ to benefit those fragile people confronting the lack of medicine under strict lockdown.
Referred to the precedent ’exchanging prescriptions and urgent medications with a sanatorium’ by Julius Neubronner, the project dealt with the complaint of pigeon keeping in the flat and emphasized the giving back to neighbours. The ‘Pigeon Post’ are applying the concept of ' contactless' to design community facilities. The sound of whistles are appreciated in the designs to delivery hopes of a lockdown city.
A pigeon whistle is a device attached to a pigeon such that it emits a noise whilst flying mainly for entertainment, which creates impressive memory for traditional Beijing. Owing to increasing urbanization and regulation of pigeon keeping, it is now gradually disappearing.
Pigeon keeping will influence other residents in the apartments after the plot ratio increases.
I would like to build a pigeon loft on the rooftop. To mitigate the negative effect of pigeon feeding on our neighbours, I would set a variety of constructions which gives back to you including delivering pigeon eggs, flower watering and recycling water.
The pharmacist presents his strategiesto get an approvement before building a pigeon loft.
In order to build a structure on public space, people now have to negotiate with other residents within one building. To get an approvement, the pharmacist provides a series of systematic strategies and promises to give back to his neighbours from pigeon feeding, aiming to deal with their worries about pigeon droppings and diseases.
Referencing the symbol of pigeons and their application in the history, the project tends to provide a Noah’s Ark‘ led by pigeons for an isolated lockdown area.
The owners of the apartment reach an agreement to build a pigeon loft.
Within minutes of feeding, pigeons poop.
I don't mind it. It will be better if you can water my flowers.
I like pigeons because their sound wakes me up.
Those flying creatures give me inspiration.
I don't want pigeons bite my flowers Their droppings make my balcony dirty.
To make pigeons emit a noise, the pharmacist will attach a whistle on pigeons one by one before releasing them.
To stamp out the epidemic, many areas across China have implemented " closed management" strategy on a community-basis when cases are tested out. Allocation of supplies will be proceeded by the community. However, sometime this one-sizefits-all approach will prevent some chronic or acute patients from getting in-time treatment. Such tragedies happen when these groups are ignored and sacrificed either as a result of restriction or medical system collapse.
The pharmacist mixes pigeon feed proportionly and sweeping the dovecote floor by water.
After entering the loft, the pharmacist collects all types of feeds in proportion from different boxes hanging on the door.
Early in the morning, the pharmacist will go upstairs to clean the loft, preventing smell and pigeon diseases from spreading. Floorings will be rinsed and washed with water and got rid of droppings. This dirty water will flow into the bio tanks and be treated for irrigating plants.
The handle on the column controls the roof. Then the roof is lifted.
I will try my best to give back to my neighbours.
The pharmacist puts pigeon eggs into the crane every morning.
Pigeon eggs for you everyday. Thank you for your patience.
Every house has a lever to control the crane which can deliver them pigeon eggs.
I can't bear the life of working at home.
I will release my pigeons every morning. Don't forget to watch them.
Thanking you for bearing my pigeons. Here are some manure supplements.
Thanking you for bearing my pigeons. Here are some manure supplements.
She watches pigeons flying when she feels bored about working from home.
Every house has a pipe linked with the dovecote. Filtered water can be used to water the flowers
It’s nostalgic to hear pigeon whistle again.
Manure fertilizer made from pigeon poops will be very nutritious for plants.
With pigeon whistles, she gets up regularly to study for the application of postgraduate.
I don't have time to water my flowers.
Don't worry about your flowers. My construction will water them on time.
Due to Covid-19, the nurse doesn’t stay at home as usual. Thanks to the watering construction, her flowers are taken good care.
The community is too busy to meet specific patients' detailed demands. The pharmacist provides pigeon delivery services for these people.
As the minority, these vulnerable people can't get enough attetion during pandemic. Under the strict restriction, they sometimes can't get timely assitance when their diseases flare up.
Pigeon has an innate ability to fly back home. To send medicine in time during lockdown, the pharmacist started to train his pigeons when the lockdown was lifted. He sent different pigeons to his patients' home regularly, making sure the pigeons can remember their homes.
But my area is under lockdown. I can't go outside.
I will use the pigeon we trained before to deliver the medicine.
The old post box is reused to container pigeon feed in the pigeon loft. At the bottle, a structure to allow feed to drop out is added.
The pharmacist gets into the pigeon loft searching for pigeons to deliver medicine. One pigeon can deliver the goods to a specific address.
The pharmacist has a packing platform in his balcony. The cover can be taken down, making it convenient for the pharmacist to put the pill bottle on the pigeon. Pills in small bottle is tied on a designed strap.
The pigeon is then released to fly its way back to the patient's home
During the lockdown, the pharmacist will go to the rooftop through his extension ladder, avoiding passing through public channel.
During the lockdown, the pharmacist will go to the rooftop through his extension ladder, avoiding passing through public channel.
In the context of covid-19 pandemic, the pigeon post tries to help all types of people.
The pharmacist then receives a message telling him that the pigeon arrives.
To help the fragile people restricted by the lockdown policy, the project built upon the concept of 'contactless develop a pigeon post service for medication delivering. The sound of whistles are appreciated in the designs to delivery hopes of a lockdown city.
The flowerpot is made from old wooden chairs.Timber sheets are used to enclose a container for soil.
As pigeons require various types of cereals, old mail boxes are recycled to contain these feeds.
Separators are recycled from traditional steel doors used to guard against theft.
Abandoned old sewing machines are collected and nailed on the wall, acting as rows of pigeon stands.
The roof is designed to be lifted up, allowing pigeons to fly out in one direction, which helps reducing the possibility of pigeon droppings on balconies.
The nozzle is recycled from old phonograph. It can spread water to the flowerpots.
Rainwater is collected and treated by this construction to feed the pigeons. Rainwater will be filter through facial masks and filter core. Then, the solar panel will help disinfecting rainwater. The bucket is linked with infusion bags recycled from hospital to deliver water to the pigeon loft.
Bio tank, recycled from tea tank, is transformed to a micro sewage treatment plant that safely processes all household wastewater and recycles it as clear odourless water back to the neighbours’ room.
The pigeon loft is a sustainable and ecological system by adopting a series of mechanical designs.
Most objects are recycled from the neighbours and then transformed to assist pigeon feeding.
Every morning, the pharmacist will pack new pigeon eggs and puts them in the container on the top of the crane. When the neighbour downstairs turns the handle, the crane will be told the position of the neighbour by its processor at its bottom and then starts to adjust its jib. During the pandemic, this construction helps reduce direct contact and reinforces the relationships between neighbouts.
Every 6 pigeon eggs will be packed in a box.

Suffering from economic decline, Redcar people is looking for a solution to maintain their families and rejuvenate their town. Situated at the west coast of this town, Redcar Steelworks is famous for steel making in the 20th century and contributes to the economic support of the local. However, the steelworks were closed due to the decline of world steel market. The local is faced with the dilemma about the lost of cultural characteristics and economic recession.
Within this rich industrial setting, the project‘the Resilience of the Steel Giant’intends to cultivate the potential of its industrial characters and create a new economic circle. As a traditional industrial factory can have a radiation effect on the area, the design would like to adjust the steel making industry to a tech-related wind turbine making industry. This steel-recycled industry will energize Redcar’s economy that badly needs replacement.
With the decline of steel market, the Redcar Steelworks was abandoned left with a bunch of materials and constructions. While some constructions are regarded as the witness of the past, tons of architecture materials are expected to be sorted and recycled.

“After demolition, I believe we will introduce new industries and provide more jobs to the local.”
To regenerate a new industry, the project proposes a strategy that can maintain the industrial identity and encourage economic development. Rather than elinminating the steel industry, the project suggests an expansion of industries. The Resilience of the Steel Giant will leave the jobs for former steel workers and attract the local residents to create a new character from an innovative industry.

Pieces of the body being utilized by the towns people
'The Drowned Giant' talked about how the body of a giant dispeared but its impact comes to people constantly.
After a storm, the body of a drowned giant was washed ashore on the beach. A scientist continuously visits the site, watching the process of the body’s disappear. As time goes by, the body was harvested by butchers and finally gone. When he walks through the small town, spotting pieces of the body being utilized by the towns people, he remembered him and his impact again.

The green industries like wind power in Redcar are still developing, which stiil have great potentials to invest. For The Resilience of the Steel Giant, manufacturing wind turbine can corporate with steel industry by using steel products as materials. It will also generate jobs for former steel workers and other opportunities for Redcar residents.
To maintain the historical past and the local’s living, it is significant to cultivate an economic opportunity from those leftover.
The wind turbine factories will be arranged next to the original steel legacy, bridging the post-industrial past and the regeneration.
The industry expansion from steel making to wind turbine manufacture creates a circular economic, by upgrading the technique and recycling surrounding steels. The wind turbine manufacture will make use of the steel scraps and help the local become low-carbon economies. Meanwhile, the new industries provides job opportunities to local workers.
Redcar has a long history of steel making, which gives the town characters. The Resilience of the Steel Giant aims to help the local people rebuild their industrial gospel, by cultivating a potetntial from its steel making past.
The implement of the wind turbine factory intrigues a new round economic circle around the area and prepares for future industrial replacement by building up a innovative steel-recycled industry.

Location: Squamish, Canada
Squamish, the north end of the Howe Sound, has abundant natural reserves and travel resources. Owning to policies to assimilate indigenous cultures in 20th century, indigenous people is suffering from cultural genocide and looking for mourning the sacrificed people and reclaim their culture.
Inspired by the concept ‘Wild Eden’ proposed toward natural reserves, the project creates a ‘Wild Cemetery’ studying indigenous attitudes toward death and how they coexist toward nature. Through research carried out by looking into Squamish legends, the project identified ‘incarnation’ as architectural theme for the cemetery. The ‘Wild Cemetery’ claims the same status between peoples and nature, going through six nodes described in the legends, experiencing the sense of peace and returning the body to the nature. This deals with the emotional fracture due to culture genocide, resonance with an architectural vernacular, whilst also creating a platform for nearby residents to heal their pain towards any lost. The gradual increasing sea level would serve as a constant reminder of death and the impact of climate on the land.

Located at the north end of Howe Sound, Squamish is a community growing with the First Nation history. The site selected is a central delta extending from the low water line to over 200m depth so that its land area follows the daily change of tide height. It separates the Squamish River from the estuary, isolating itself from the town and industrial area.
Regarding to sea-level rise, the delta is expected to be drowned in the water when the tide increases to 7 meters.
Owning to polices issued in 20th century, Squamish indigenous culture is fading and now only 10 people can speak their own language. Nowadays, indigenous people is looking for to mourn the sacrificed people and reclaim their culture. To present indigenous culture in an understandable way, the design tends to explore indigenous legends to say farewell to the dead people and creatures.

This hall is the beginning of the cemetery. Within this timber setting, the Funeral Hall intends to create an embracing ambience, allowing the families accompany the dead.
People lift the dead in a canoe going through this open timber bridge, similar to a forest journey in a traditional funeral. The bridge creates a silent journey between two key nodes allowing emotional interaction between nature and people.
Shaman and the dead’s families will finally arrive at the platform to send the canoe into the crematory incinerator through a watercourse. This process is inspired by the rituals of leaving time for soul to escape from the body.
Referring to the Squamish legends, the experience to the crematory incinerator is designed to go through forest, river and finally arrive at coast. The staffs in cemetery will stop the canoe and ‘guide’ the body to resomation as in the legends.
The ocean of farewell is the final scene. After the resomation, the resulting liquid will be released to the ground and then the daily tide will take it away. Luminescent bacteria will be added to serve as a reminder of death and detect the water pollution.
The Dining Longhouse is located on the other side of the river. After saying farewell to the dead body, people will walk through a long path either along a river or through a forest to the longhouse for dinner.
