final message from the

REGIONAL DIRECTOR SCOTT MAAS, CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY

The Final Approach “Attention, passengers, we will be soon making our final approach into Lincoln, Nebraska…” On a ordinary May afternoon in 2013, I received a voicemail from Dave Teske in the Central Office. Little did I know, calling him back would completely change my life. Fast forward 1,198 days, and here I am preparing to make my Fun in Flyover Country final approach into Lincoln, Neb. for the 2016 Regional Conference. While it will be bittersweet, the joy of being the leader of this region and experiencing the conference that Kyle and his team have poured love into will always overpower the bittersweetness. As I prepare for my final approach as the Region V director, I want to take a moment to thank you all for making this volunteer commitment one of the best experiences I have ever had. While the commitment has felt like a full-time job at times, there are moments I will cherish forever. These are just a few of those moments. March 21, 2014 Northern Illinois University The region’s first Leadership Team gathered to start the creation of Region V. Thinking about this day gives me chills as I wish I knew then about the amazing things this team was going to do over the next year. April 9, 2014 Annual Conference Orlando Annual Meeting of the Delegates As I carried in the Region V banner, I

turned to see the members of Region V filing in behind me with smiling faces. I’ll never forget that moment. Regional Leadership Teams I hope you all know how amazing the Region V professionals are. Having the opportunity to work with three Regional Leadership Teams full of some of the elite professionals in the region has not only been an honor but it has been educational. They have taught me so much and I hope that I have been able to make them proud as their leader. Fun in Flyover Country Newsletter This newsletter has been the cornerstone for our regional communication. The work and dedication that Kat Shanahan and Kristin Erdman have put into it has been amazing. To be able to award them both with Association awards the past two years has been an honor. The Membership of Region V In the past four years, I have driven 1,633 miles around our region. Everywhere I went I tried to stop in at member institutions to see what is happening. This region is full of institutions doing great things, being innovative in tough times, while living the role of the college union each day at their institutions. Each of these states may be “Minnesota/Nebraska/ Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois/South Dakota/ North Dakota Nice” (pick your state), but in the past four years I have seen not only Region V Nice but I have seen Region V Innovators/Change Agents/ Leaders of the Profession. One of my favorite memories will always be having the other regions look at Region V and say, “how did you do that?”

These are just a few highlights of my time as director. There are so many more high points, like increased opportunities through scholarships, large regional conferences, etc. that I could fill the newsletter, but I’ll leave by saying that this experience has been truly fulfilling, and it is all due to you. I thank you for your part in this journey of mine. Together, we have built a region. We may be in Flyover Country, but in the past four years, we have showed the association that there is a lot of fun happening here. I look forward to seeing you all in Lincoln, Neb. for the 2016 regional conference. It may be my final approach, but I hope you will join me in preparing a Rebion V director for his initial take-off. Congratulations to David Israels-Swenson from University of Minnesota-Morris on being elected to the regional director position! I look forward to seeing how far you’ll take this region of amazing individuals.
