LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Normally I would welcome you to this version of the newsletter and share with you what’s inside these pages, but in light of the Region VII Newsletter winning the Earl Whitfield Regional Outreach Award at this year’s Annual Conference, I just wanted to take this space to say thank you.

Without our Region VII members and the work they do, the stories they’ve shared, and the ways they continue to contribute to this field, this newsletter would not be worthy of any awards. So while I know I was the one on stage accepting the award, I hope everyone in our Region takes pride in this victory because it belongs to all of us.

New York is called the city that never sleeps and the phrase “A New York Minute” was coined by folks from Texas amazed at just how much New Yorkers could cram into sixty seconds But what happens when you give members from Region VII over 5,000 New York Minutes? Well, a whole lot. Follow along for a look into just some of what our Region VII members did with their time in the Big Apple . . .

The 2025 ACUI Region VII Conference is already generating buzz as this year’s Conference Planning Team (CPT) prepares to welcome students and professionals from across the region to Montclair State University this November 13th-15th. With a recent on-site planning visit completed, CPT members are energized and enthusiastic about what’s to come.

At the forefront of this year’s planning effort is Serafina Genise, the 2025 Conference Planning Chair. For Serafina, the process of assembling and leading the CPT has been a highlight in itself.

Genise notes that “Getting to put together the best team I could imagine for this conference planning cycle has been the most exciting part so far. I get to work with some amazing and motivated individuals who have made this process a dream.”

Among those team members is Darrek Harshberger, serving as the Fundraising Coordinator alongside Samantha Jones.

“As a new member of the CPT, it can be daunting at first, but everyone has been so helpful and offered so much wisdom and encouragement,” said Darrek. “We are all definitely working hard to have an amazing conference, and it is truly showing!”

Meanwhile, Nick Christy, Keynote and All Conference Sessions Coordinator, is leading efforts to deliver inspiring and thoughtful programming that reflects the evolving needs of campus professionals and student leaders alike.

“It is a privilege to serve ACUI Region VII members,” Nick shared. “I’ve attended several conferences in the past and have always loved the welcoming spirit ACUI brings. I’m excited to connect with members from all over the region and talk about the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

The team’s recent site visit to Montclair State University was a pivotal moment for collaboration and vision-setting, with Genise remarking that “The site visit was great, Getting to spend time together outside of Zoom and seeing the spaces we’ll be living and learning in come November

was so valuable There were so many laughs and ideas that came out of our time together.”

Nick echoed Genise’s sentiment: “It was great to meet our CPT in person. We’re an energetic group with different personalities and strengths, and I think it's a recipe for an amazing conference experience.”

Darrek was especially impressed by the campus atmosphere.

“Montclair State University is a gorgeous campus with lots of uniqueness! I love visiting other campuses and seeing what makes them different I’m especially excited about the last night of the conference and hopefully being able to see New York City!”

In fact, the proximity to NYC is a feature attendees can look forward to.

“Montclair is just 11 miles from New York City,” added Serafina. “There are even spots on campus where you can see the skyline! We may even have an amazing view during our closing banquet.”

Darrek added: “If you're anything like me, living far away from NYC, Times Square is only 30 minutes away and definitely a highlight when the conference isn’t in session!”

This year’s conference will introduce several exciting new elements. One of the biggest updates: a brand-new program track tailored specifically for undergraduate students.

“Our Education and Student Experience team is working hard to build this program from scratch,” Serafina said. “We’re really excited about it!”

Darrek is also focused on expanding fundraising initiatives that directly support the region.

“We’re amping up Buy More Beads our Heads and Tails game and our silent auction,” he said. “All funds raised go directly to ACUI Region VII. And if you can’t attend, there will still be ways to support our region!”

While Nick is still finalizing some potential new experiences, his focus is on providing space for reflection and growth

“Expect a chance to meet new people, connect with old friends, learn something new, and reflect on current practices,” he said. “We know the world is changing rapidly, and we’re hoping to give you the skills and connections to create a roadmap for the future.”

For professional staff, the conference is more than just a learning opportunity. It’s a place to recharge and be inspired.

“Professional staff should attend to learn from their colleagues or share what their institutions are doing well,” said Serafina. “I always leave the conference with my cup filled and excited to bring new ideas back to my campus.”

Darrek added from the perspective of a new professional:

“At the last conference, I made so many new connections and came back with ideas for everything from Parent and Family Engagement to Commuter Services. It was an incredible learning experience.”

Region VII Communications Coordinator Dom Hannon is a big fan of the updates to next year’s conference!

Darrek added from the perspective of a new professional:

“At the last conference, I made so many new connections and came back with ideas for everything from Parent and Family Engagement to Commuter Services. It was an incredible learning experience.”

And for students, the event is equally valuable.

“Students undergraduate or graduate should attend this amazing opportunity to grow and help their campuses,” said Darrek. “The connections you make at conferences can last a lifetime and even help in future job searches!”

Serafina agrees: “Working in a student union is such a unique experience. At the conference, you can connect with peers from other campuses, share ideas, and explore student affairs as a potential career.”

As planning continues, the 2025 ACUI Region VII Conference is shaping up to be a standout event filled with community, learning, and inspiration.

Visit the ACUI Region VII website for updates, including educational session submissions and information about registration.

November at Montclair State University promises to be unforgettable.

Happy Summer Region VII!

The preparations for the Next Steps conference and Grad and Grow are going swimmingly, and we would love to see you there! Join us in July and August for carefully curated networking and professional development with your peers - we have some excellent sessions lined up.

As higher education professionals, I think we need to lean into the education part of that, and the best way to start is with ourselves. There are so many things that would be relevant to educate ourselves on and try to learn about current happenings in the world, but I know how overwhelming that can be. My recommendation is to seek out knowledge with intentionality. One way to do this, of course, is to read.

A book I read recently that really stayed with me was “The Message” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The book consists of three parts, each a reflection of his experience traveling through Senegal, occupied Palestine, and a small town in South Carolina. He discusses themes of home, displacement, history, and the art of writing. What I loved so much about this book was the way it made me feel while reading it. Coates is a masterful writer, weaving his childhood memories with explorations of racism, apartheid, book bans, and reflections on history. His prose was beautiful but also measured, making this accessible and enjoyable read, in my opinion.

As we all know, just because it is Summer does not mean that we get a break. So, while you pursue knowledge and make plans for the upcoming year, make sure to take time to breathe as well. Start small - be kind to yourself and others, and embrace community.

Sophia Parra (she/her)

Sophia Parra is a second-year graduate student in the Master of Education in College Student Affairs program at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. She currently serves as a Graduate Coordinator with Student Centers & Event Services, part of Student Centers & Activities, where she plays an integral role in enhancing the student experience through event execution and student employee supervision.

This summer, Sophia is also serving as a NODA Intern for New Student Orientation at the University of Maryland, College Park. In this position, she is helping to support incoming students through their transition to college life, a testament to her commitment to orientation and student success.

Before beginning her graduate journey, Sophia made a lasting impact during her undergraduate years at Montclair State University She held multiple leadership roles within the Student Government Association, including Executive Secretary, Chief of Staff, and Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook Her voice and creativity also reached broader audiences as a Social Media Ambassador for Montclair State University, where she was once responsible for creating a TikTok with 1 million views!

Sophia was heavily involved in student orientation through the Hawk Squad, serving as a Member, Coordinator, and eventually Manager. She also contributed to the university's enrollment efforts as an Undergraduate Admissions Ambassador and actively participated in the Future Student Affairs Professionals organization, laying the groundwork for her graduate studies

Her professional development began early, including attending her first ACUI conference at last year’s regional event at West Chester University an experience she describes as truly transformative. She also serves as one of the student members on the Region VII Regional Leadership Team, where she focuses on social media and communications.

Sophia’s journey is a shining example of how early involvement builds a strong foundation for a career in student affairs and ACUI.

Fun Fact: Sophia has attended 5 Dancing With the Stars live tours and has met a majority of the current professional dancers!

InclusiveInsights

Happy Pride When I reflected on remarks for June’s Inclusive Insights in celebration of Pride Month, I initially struggled with the optics of me, a straight, white, male commenting on the topic. However, my friend and supervisor, Rick Brown, a long time member of the LGBTQ+ community (the phrase "long-time" was his, not mine), told me "you are the most 'nonLGBTQ+ ally and supporter' of the LGBTQ+ community that I know," so I feel a bit better.

As we kick off this month, it is important to recognize that pride is many things. Pride is celebratory. And pride is family including mine. It is attending Pride in New York City with tens of thousands of others And it is attending Pride in the neighboring town with hundreds of others. It is running the NYC Marathon as part of the Human Rights Campaign team, raising more than $7,000 for the fight for equality And it is reading a family favorite book, "and Tango Makes Three" to each new baby in our lives.

But pride is also more than festivals and parades Pride is a reminder of how much work is still to be done and the very real dangers and loss that exist for the LGBTQ+ community. Earlier this month, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the secretary of the Navy to rename the oiler ship USNS Harvey Milk Earlier this year, trans people were removed from National Park Websites, including the Stonewall National Monument. Stonewall almost certainly isn’t a national monument and the movement isn't a movement without trans individuals

As we do our work in our various positions on our respective campuses, it is important to remember that work to support the LGBTQ+ community isn’t the work of one person or one center. It’s anyone who advises clubs, creates programming, oversees Greek Life, establishes and maintains physical spaces in our unions and so much more It is all of us

To the lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer and questioning students, faculty, and staff reading today- we see you, we hear you, we are with you And the same is true for the students who just left our campuses in May, who will join us this summer at Orientation and pre-college programs, and all those who will once again fill our campus with life in August.

As we recognize and observe this Pride month, let us learn. Let us support. Let us fight. And let us celebrate!

We understand that sometimes folks in ACUI use acronyms or terms that not all members are familiar with. While we try our hardest to avoid this, you still may hear these terms and phrases and not be sure what they mean. Community of Practice - A term referring to networks of members that share a common interest.

CPT - Conference Planning Team (team planning Regional conferences or could refer to Conference Program Team (team planning annual Conference)

ILEAD® - Institute for Leadership Education and Development, I-LEAD® is ACUI’s premier student program, designed to emphasize the key concept areas of leadership, community development, and change

IPDS - IPDS: New Professionals Orientation is an introduction to the profession that offers ample idea sharing, discussion of theory and skills, and opportunities to network
