Walking through the Australian National Botanic Gardens is a great way to begin your exploration of Canberra’s finest attractions.

There’s a show for everyone at the Canberra Theatre Centre and The Street Theatre.

The National Convention Centre is the city’s largest multipurpose venue; it hosts music events and basketball games and is also home to the Royal Theatre. ANU’s Llewellyn Hall is revered for hosting orchestral and classical performances. Want to catch some live music?

Parked near Haig Park, this big yellow bus (open Wednesday to Saturday nights) serves up plenty of Asian-fusion dishes, like the chicken satay on roti that’s light on the wallet but heavy on flavour.

Pialligo, Majura & Fyshwick Nestled between the city fringe and Canberra Airport, the semirural suburbs of Pialligo, Fyshwick and Majura are slowly being transformed with alfresco dining hotspots and a retail hub.

PLAY Take a brewery tour, then tuck into Brodburger burgers and beer at locally owned Capital Brewing Co. Just 10 minutes’ drive north on nearby Lime Kiln Road is Mount Majura Vineyard, where you can taste varietals such as tempranillo, pinot gris and shiraz at the cellar door. For a rural foodie experience, visit The Truffle Farm, which runs seasonal truffle hunts and other events, such as dégustation lunches. Practise skiing or snowboarding on the “slopes” – soft, white nylon matting – at Vertikal Indoor Snow Sports, before sipping hot chocolate, après-ski-style. Climb the walls at BlocHaus Bouldering Gym or join its exercise classes.

SHOP Pick up fashion and homewares bargains at the Canberra Outlet Centre or stock up at superstores IKEA and Costco – the latter of which is located at Majura Park Shopping Centre, also home to other major retailers and supermarkets. For preloved pieces, the Designer Op Shop Emporium in Fyshwick is well stocked with vintage and retro fashion.

A five-minute drive away, in Pialligo, you’ll find ceramics and glassware at Bisonhome, while Bliss Garden & Giftware has you covered for gifts and homewares. A minute’s drive down Beltana Road is Rodney’s Plants Plus, a nursery with a café. Dotted around Pialligo are several other nurseries and orchards where visitors can buy freshly picked fruit such as apples, pears and peaches. Families can also enjoy self-picking at Tanbella Orchard.

SEE Take a stroll around the Jerrabomberra Wetlands, in Fyshwick, a nature reserve and refuge for migrating birds from the Northern Hemisphere and inland Australia.

Manuka Regarded as one of Canberra’s premier shopping and dining destinations, with plenty of restaurants and cafés, Manuka is 10 minutes from the CBD.

PLAY Catch the latest films at Capitol Cinemas Manuka, an Event Cinema. For a sporting outing, head to Manuka Oval, which hosts cricket and AFL matches. Take a dip at the historic Manuka Pool – Canberra’s first swimming pool, officially opened in 1931.

SEE Canberra Contemporary Art Space Manuka is well worth a visit for its experimental art installations, while PhotoAccess features striking photographic exhibitions.

Kingston Canberra’s oldest suburb – located right next to the Parliamentary Triangle – is a hive of cultural activity and trendy eateries dotted along the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin.

SEE The Kingston Arts Precinct continues to expand, with plans for workshops, gallery spaces and accommodation for visiting artists.

Visit the Canberra Glassworks, housed in the iconic Kingston Powerhouse (an industrial site constructed between 1913 and 1915) to marvel at the exhibitions and see live glassblowing. In the building next door is Megalo Print Studio + Gallery, Canberra’s original home of screen printing, while the Scott Leggo Gallery is nearby for photo enthusiasts.

PLAY Rent an electric boat from GoBoat to sail around Lake Burley Griffin, stopping to have a picnic along the way, or get your heart racing with a quick lap around the go-kart track at Power Kart Raceway.

SHOP In Kingston’s shopping village, explore boutique women’s fashion stores such as Honeysuckle and Lace and the CARDIF Collective, which showcases local designers. It’s pretty amazing. We have a lot of incredible restaurants and bars. For me and my wife, a really good night out starts in Lyneham at The Old Canberra Inn for warm-up beers, moves to Lazy-Su in Braddon for a vegan banquet, followed by Gelato Messina, and a few drinks at Hippo Co or Bar Rochford to finish things off.

Is there a secret spot in Canberra that you just love?

What would you say is the best outdoor activity to enjoy in Canberra?

We have some of the best granite climbing in Australia, so get up to Booroomba Rocks in Namadgi National Park. It’s probably not the best spot for beginner climbers, but there are some truly amazing lines.

Parliament House

Lakeside & Barton Some of the nation’s most iconic cultural institutions and historic buildings are set on the water’s edge of Lake Burley Griffin, just a few minutes’ drive from Canberra’s CBD. Along with the neighbouring suburb of Barton, this precinct – which has plenty of leafy parks and culinary delights on offer – is one of the city’s premier tourist destinations.

SEE The striking National Museum of Australia is perched at the end of Acton Peninsula on an 11ha site. Opened in 2001, it focuses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, Australian history and society since European settlement and how we interact with our environment.

Lake Burley Griffin’s foreshore is also the site of the National Library of Australia, which houses the world’s largest collection of materials relating to Australia. Visitors can find a quiet spot to pore over titles in the many reading rooms or use the research tools to explore their family history.

Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre, across the road from the library, is ideal for families. With its interactive galleries and outdoor Science Garden exhibits, it makes learning about science fun for kids.

Only a short walk away, along King Edward Terrace, is the National Portrait Gallery, which has more than 3500 works representing people who have shaped Australia’s national identity.

Nestled behind the gallery, also on the lake foreshore, sits the High Court of Australia – the highest court in our judicial system.

Art-lovers should make their way to the National Gallery of Australia for its extensive collection of international, local and Indigenous art. Until 28 April, visitors can enjoy exhibition Love & Desire, showcasing Pre-Raphaelite paintings on loan from the Tate in Britain.

Once you’ve wandered through the galleries, head outdoors to James Turrell’s Skyspace installation and spend time in the Sculpture Garden on the lake’s edge.

Stand on the steps of Old Parliament House, where former Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam famously addressed the media after his dismissal in 1975, then walk inside to the

Museum of Australian Democracy. Here, you can learn about the country’s former leaders, discover how democracy works and explore the historical collections and exhibitions.

The National Archives of Australia – keeper of the nation’s memory – can also be found at Old Parliament House. This diverse collection of government records includes documents about the Australian Constitution and Federation, Cabinet records and the Discovering Anzacs site, where you can download complete World War I service files. There’s also a reading room where visitors can peruse the pages of history.

Enter the building through the Great Verandah, which leads to the vast Marble Foyer. Take in the foreshore sights on two wheels

Learn about Canberra’s past and unique town planning at the National Capital Exhibition. Get information about what’s on in the city at the nearby Canberra and Region Visitors Centre.

Across the lake from the High Court of Australia, on the northern shore, is historic Blundells Cottage. The stone building, erected in 1860, is open each Saturday to visitors, with the displays inside reflecting the families of the workers who occupied the cottage for more than 100 years.

SHOP Take home a memento of your time in the nation’s capital. Located at Regatta Point, the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre stocks local wine, beer and spirits, as well as other local produce and merchandise.

PLAY One of the best ways to explore the heart of Canberra and the Lake Burley Griffin foreshore is on two wheels. Join a guided tour with Mulga Bicycle Tours or Canberra Urban Adventures (which has electric bikes).

Pedal Power ACT has various rides and events to take part in. You can also glide around the attractions on a Segway tour with Seg Glide Ride.

Several self-guided walking tours also take in the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin, along with attractions such as Old Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial.

Explore the landscaped gardens, ponds, playgrounds and artworks at Commonwealth Park. You can also take the time to smell the flowers during Floriade, which is held in this beautiful urban park each spring and is a must-visit event.

National Arboretum Canberra

at Beaver Galleries, a fantastic little café run by chef David Lockwood, who specialises in great organic food and homemade cakes. At night, we love the casual ambience and fresh Malaysian food at Abell’s Kopi Tiam in Manuka, the extraordinary Turkish at Pomegranate Restaurant in Kingston or Ottoman Cuisine in Barton. Public in Manuka is a great place for a pre-dinner drink or catch-up with friends, as is Joe’s Bar, at the East Hotel in Kingston, which is more intimate and has terrific food.

What spots do you always love to take visitors to?

We like to go up to Red Hill Lookout for a great panoramic view out over Canberra and also take a walk around Lake Burley Griffin. Then we like to visit as many of our fantastic national institutions as we can fit in.

The area was highly prized for bogong moths, which would be teased out from beneath these rocky overhangs before being roasted and eaten. Spring – you get beautiful weather and snow, and the snow conditions are the easiest to ski. Spring turns the valleys green and the raspberries in our patch start growing.

What events would you recommend in the Snowy Mountains region?

The Thredbo Memorial Race, which commemorates and celebrates those who lost their lives in the [1997] Thredbo landslide. It brings the community together in a fun way, but it’s serious as well. The new L’Etape cycle race and the annual motorbike Snowy Ride are also two interesting events because they bring a whole different crowd to see the mountains.

What is your favourite restaurant?

MAIN RANGE Pass glacial lakes, historic huts and the fabled Snowy River as you hike through alpine country on the Main Range Walk in Kosciuszko National Park, a UNESCOdesignated biosphere reserve. This challenging full-day trek is a 22km loop from Charlotte Pass that takes you up to the 2228m summit

Crackenback Farm, because I can walk there from the distillery and the food is excellent. of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. The walk is snowbound in winter, so it’s best to tackle it in the warmer months.

Australians accept that we have snowfields dotted with gum trees, but anyone visiting from outside the country finds this combination extraordinary.
