Spring 2017

Canberra bursts into colour

Canberra springs into a colourful celebration this season with a jam-packed calendar of events and indulgent treats to make your short break to the capital an unforgettable one.

Front cover: Floriade brings colour across Canberra. This page: Floriade’s NightFest returns over two big weekends.

48 SPRINGTIME HOURS IN CANBERRA Begin your day with a hearty breakfast. Venture into the popular precincts of NewActon, Braddon, Kingston and Barton and start your day the right way.

Treat yourself to something decadent — perhaps a glass of bubbles over brunch, or a spa treatment in a luxurious spa – if you can’t justify a treat during your break, when can you!

There’s something for everyone at our national attractions. Art-lovers, head to the National Gallery of Australia or National Portrait Gallery. History buffs, the Australian War Memorial and National Archives of Australia are calling your name. Bringing the kids? Questacon or the National Dinosaur Museum are must-visits. Make time to explore and walk away feeling like you’ve learned something new.

Take in the views from one of Canberra’s lookouts. Mount Ainslie or Black Mountain offer sweeping vistas across the city, the lake and beyond. Kangaroo sightings are a common occurrence so keep your eyes peeled!

Jump on a bike and make your way around the centrepiece of Canberra, Lake Burley Griffin. Enquire about bike hire at the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre at Regatta Point. Swing by Floriade in the evening and enjoy a beverage among the blooms — it’s open until 7pm. Take in the magical evening light as the sun begins to set across Lake Burley Griffin. Wake up in one of Canberra’s various accommodation options — from luxury hotels and self-contained apartments to hostels, camping sites, rural properties, or perhaps a room right next to some welcoming zoo animals — we’ve got the lot.

Grab a bite to eat somewhere unexpected. Visit Pollen at the Australian National Botanic Gardens for a lunch in lush surrounds, or enjoy an elegant outdoor brunch in the Parliament House courtyard (7 & 14 October).

Make the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre your one stop shop for all your booking, shopping and information needs. Head to Regatta Point, Barrine Drive to organise your short-break in Canberra.

WHAT’S NEW

GET ACTIVE THIS SPRING

• GoBoat sets sail for Canberra. These Scandinavian designed, sustainable self-drive boats will be available for you to float across Lake Burley Griffin, nibbling away on a picnic.

• If witnessing the world’s best during the Rugby League World Cup (29 October– 10 November) or seeing the Wallabies battle Argentina (16 September) doesn’t get you motivated, we’re not sure what will.

• Floriade is open longer this year (10am to 7pm) so you can see the capital’s sights and spend plenty of time at the spring festival. • You’ve now got two weekends to fit in your Floriade NightFest fun — 22 to 24 September and 29 September to 1 October. Join us as we laugh, eat and party after dark. • The industrial suburb of Fyshwick is changing. The Capital Brewing Co.’s taproom opens 9 September, accompanied by tasty food truck treats, and is a perfect spot to relax after experiencing the new rockclimbing locale Blochaus. • Beauty junkies, rejoice! The Canberra Centre is now home to popular and hard-tosource brands. The new beauty precinct, Monaro Mall, sees the likes of Mecca Maxima, L'Occitane, Lush and many more under one roof.

• Get up close and personal with Australia’s friendly natural wildlife at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, a 45-minute drive from Canberra. • Explore Instagram-worthy natural beauty in the bush capital. Popular spots include Namadgi National Park, Gibraltar Falls and Booroomba Rocks. • Take part in a sporty event. Whether it’s the mindfulness triathlon (running, yoga and meditation) at Wanderlust 108, or participating in the Canberra Times Fun Run, your body will thank you for taking part in all the fun. • Make like the locals do by exercising around the lake. Walk the two-bridges (Commonwealth Avenue to Kings Avenue loop), take part in a stand-up paddle boarding yoga class or segway your way around the lake with SegGlideRide.
