Autumn 2017

Canberra lights up this autumn

Whether you’re hungry for a unique experience or some mouth-watering delights, be surprised as Canberra comes to life in a celebration of colour and entertainment.

LOOK UP!

EAT, DRINK, BE MERRY

Your eyes will be firmly affixed to the skies as Canberra puts on a display of colour and fun this autumn.

Autumn in Canberra is prime for celebrating with friends and family. Dining in Canberra’s “foodie” precincts of Braddon, NewActon and Kingston Foreshore is always an option, where new restaurants and established options abound.

The whole city is transformed with the glow of magnificent autumnal colours as the trees begin to turn. Take in the spectacular views of the National Arboretum on a guided forest walk or enjoy a picnic lunch during their Autumn Forest Open Day on 4 March. The Canberra Balloon Spectacular will take your breath away as you watch over 30 hot air balloons inflate from the lawns of Old Parliament House and serenely make their way across the city. After dark, watch the sky erupt with an enviable display of fireworks, choreographed to the latest hits for Hit104.7 Skyfire on 18 March. And for the little ones, Questacon will take them up, up and away from 25 March with Above and Beyond. Discover what it takes to go in and above the sky in this interactive exhibit presented by Boeing.

Left: Don’t miss the National Folk Festival at Exhibition Park over the Easter long weekend. Front cover: The Canberra Balloon Spectacular returns from 11–19 March.

The Enlighten Night Noodle Markets returns from 3–12 March, and promises to deliver a unique take on traditional Asian street food. Be enticed by sizzling noodle dishes and succulent dumplings, or better yet, bring your friends and share a bit of everything! Canberra District Wine Week, from 31 March–9 April, celebrates our region’s growing popularity for the wine drinkers amongst us with a variety of tastings, tours and food-matching events taking place across Canberra and beyond. Wine not your thing? We’ll look after you with the 10th anniversary of the Canberra Craft Beer & Cider Festival taking place on 18 March. If it’s laughs you’re after, the Canberra Comedy Festival will have you rolling in the aisles as local and international comedians including the likes of Hannah Gadsby, Dave Hughes and Jimeoin descend upon Canberra from 20–26 March. The National Folk Festival will return over Easter (13–17 April) for a five day celebration of all aspects of folk life.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL Whether you prefer to get amongst it in the great outdoors, or cheer on your favourite team from the sidelines, there’s plenty to keep you busy this autumn in Canberra. Don your team colours and head over to Manuka Oval to catch North Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs take on the GIANTS. There’s also non-stop action from March onwards at GIO Stadium for NRL and Rugby fans alike. You’ll catch the likes of the Sharks, Western Force, Highlanders, Reds, Blues and Lions display their talent as they take on the Plus500 Brumbies over six adrenaline filled weekends. Meanwhile, NRL fans can soak up the atmosphere and support the Sharks, West Tigers, Eels, Warriors, Sea Eagles and Roosters as they battle it out against the Canberra Raiders. Don your finest frock and dust off your best suit for the Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal Stakes and tab.com.au Canberra Cup Race Day 2017 on 5 March. Enjoy Canberra’s beautiful natural surrounds on a ranger guided walk at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve — you may just spot some beautiful Australian wildlife in their natural habitat while you’re at it!

DISCOVER THE AUSTRALIAN STORY The nation’s capital is the perfect place to reflect upon what it means to be Australian. Celebrate the birth of the nation’s capital on Canberra Day, 13 March, as the city comes together to enjoy free entertainment. Discover the stories of Indigenous soldiers in Facing Two Fronts: The Fight for Respect at the National Archives of Australia, and learn more about Australia’s involvement in the Middle East as part of the War Memorial’s Middle East Exhibition. Pay your respects and commemorate Anzac Day at the Australian War Memorial with the National Ceremony, Dawn Service and Last Post Ceremony on 25 April. Observe the roll of honour projections as the names of those who gave their lives during the First World War are projected onto the facade of the Hall of Memory, nightly at the Australian War Memorial.

Taste a brew or two at the Canberra Beer and Cider Festival.

ART ATTACK Canberra is fortunate to host a range of exhibitions, festivals, performances and celebrations of the arts year round, and autumn is no exception. Enlighten 2017 presented by Singapore Airlines (3–12 March) brings together the iconic with the innovative. Canberra’s national attractions will be revealed in a different light as projections splash across these historical buildings. Make your way around the Parliamentary Triangle after dark and see these buildings come to life. Put on your dancing shoes — the BOLD Festival is taking place between 8–12 March and explores dance through a series of workshops, talks and performances.

Art, Not Apart takes over the city on 18 March as performances and exhibitions bring together the wacky, weird and wonderful — watch out for spontaneous dance parties! You Are Here Festival brings life to spaces not usually considered at the forefront of the arts scene — think laneways, carparks and more. Make your way around the various exhibitions sites from 5–9 April — you’ll be surprised where you end up. Don’t miss your final chance to experience the wonder of Versailles: Treasures from the Palace at the National Gallery of Australia. The exclusive exhibition will come to a close on 17 April.
