Brimming with festive music and visual splendor, A Christmas Carol has a place in this community as one of the not-to-be-missed family holiday traditions. From the frightening ghost of Jacob Marley to the kindhearted Tiny Tim, we are delighted to bring back all of your favorite characters to the Pamela Brown Auditorium. William McNulty takes the stage again as Ebenezer “Bah Humbug” Scrooge, and Celina Dean will once again steal your hearts as the resilient Mrs. Cratchit. We are excited that several Professional Training Company alumnae will also be returning as part of the cast. Taylor Abels will be playing Mrs. Fezziwig, Amelia Windom will be sure to charm as Belle, and Lisa Bol returns as Mrs. Grigsby. We are pleased to introduce many talented new faces in this season’s production as well who will captivate you with spirited performances full of energy and enchantment.

Charles Dickens and the Invention of Christmas When Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in 1843, Christmas wasn’t a major holiday in England. It had become somewhat unfashionable among the middle and upper classes, and the working-class families who did celebrate it barely had time to do so—Ebenezer Scrooge’s reluctance to give Bob Cratchit a day off was no exaggeration! Other grim aspects of life in Dickens’s England may have blunted any seasonal cheer: up to one-third of Londoners lived in poverty, tuberculosis was rampant, and child mortality was high. Celebrating Christmas in England had also occasionally been Charles Dickens. controversial, and it was even briefly illegal in the mid1600s, when Oliver Cromwell and his fellow Puritans mandated that December 25 be dedicated to fasting and repentance—no extravagant English traditions in sight.

Dickens, however, loved those traditions. His son Henry remembered that at Christmastime, Dickens “was always at his best, a splendid host, bright and jolly as a boy and throwing his heart and soul into everything.” But having spent part of his childhood working in a factory, Dickens was keenly aware that not everyone was well-off enough to enjoy Christmas. And so for him, the day wasn’t just about indulging and merry-making; it was also a time for generosity and self-reflection. His perspective struck a chord: A Christmas Carol was an instant hit, not only in England but also throughout Europe and the United States, and it popularized many holiday customs, including eating turkey and saying “Merry Christmas.”

That said, it’s perhaps a stretch to call Charles Dickens “the man who invented Christmas,” as scholar F. G. Kitton did in 1903. Though the nickname has stuck, it so happens that the publication of A Christmas Carol coincided with a broader reemergence of the holiday in Victorian England. English-language carols exploded in number and popularity during Dickens’s time, and the same year that A Christmas Carol came out, the first commercial Christmas card was introduced. Christmas trees became a fad in England and the United States a few years later, thanks largely to Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who brought the custom from his native Germany.

In other words, Dickens’s writing both inspired his fellow Victorians to rediscover Christmas and reflected how they were already doing so. But Dickens also pressed his readers to keep the season’s spirit of compassion alive year-round—an idea that remains powerful today. ~ Jessica Reese

Charles Dickens’s Reflections on Christmas Charles Dickens’s most famous Christmas story is, of course, A Christmas Carol. However, Dickens wrote insightfully about the holiday in short stories, essays, and novels throughout his career. If you’re looking for reading recommendations this season, consider the selections listed below. Vivid, sharply observed, and heartfelt, these pieces are perfect for reading while curled up by a fire or with a glass of eggnog in hand.  “A Christmas Tree,” 1850  “What Christmas Is As We Grow Older,” 1851  “The Seven Poor Travelers,” 1854  “The Holly-Tree,” 1855 All of these pieces are in the public domain and can easily be found online. Previously, he had been the Managing Director of Theatre Communications Group since 2010. Prior to joining TCG, Moore was with Arizona Theatre Company, where he worked for ten years in various capacities, ultimately serving as Managing Director. In addition to Arizona Theatre Company, Moore is also a founding board member and former Board President for Alliance for Audience/ShowUp.com in Phoenix, a service organization for the arts in the Valley. Moore has also served on panels for the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Theatre Communications Group, and has served on several planning committees for bi-annual meetings for the League of Resident Theatres. Moore has also served on the negotiating committee for contract negotiations between the League of Resident Theatres and United Scenic Artists, and has been on the Executive Committee for the League of Resident Theatres. Late Arrival Policy Late Seating in the Pamela Brown Auditorium or the Bingham Theatre is at the discretion of the House Manager, who can be located in the lobbies upon your arrival. Due to the intimate nature of the Victor Jory Theatre, latecomers will not be seated.

Parking Accessible parking is available on the Mezzanine Level of the Actors parking garage and on the Ground Floor Level for vans. There are additional marked spaces next to the Main Street elevators on Levels 3 through 6. The Actors parking garage elevators, located along Main Street, provide direct access to theatre lobbies. Sound Enhancement All theatres are equipped with an FM wireless system for hearing enhancement.

Audio-Described Performances Selected performances, generally during a weekend matinee, are audio described for patrons who are blind or have low vision.

Caption Theatre Caption Theatre is provided for selected performances for patrons who have hearing loss and may not benefit from hearing amplification. The Kentucky Watercolor Society presents the thirty-ninth annual Aqueous USA 2016 international water media. Aqueous is proud to exhibit 60 artists from across the country.

Artists from 28 states and two countries entered the competition, resulting in outstanding water media paintings from artists representing 20 states in this exhibition.

The competition was juried by Rose Edin. Ms. Edin is an award-winning artist and author who paints images filled with light and color.

Actors Theatre of Louisville was founded in 1964 by Richard Block in association with Ewel Cornett. Jon Jory was Producing Director from 1969 to 2000.

Alexander Speer was Executive Director from 1965 to 2006.

Artists under Commission In addition to reading script submissions from around the country, Actors Theatre of Louisville builds relationships with playwrights and encourages the creation of new work by commissioning plays from artists whom we admire. A new play commission engages a writer to pen a piece specifically for Actors Theatre of Louisville and allows us to support the work’s development from the earliest stages of inspiration onward.

Some notable past full-length plays commissioned by Actors Theatre and produced in the Humana Festival of New American Plays include The Christians by Lucas Hnath, For Peter Pan on her 70th birthday by Sarah Ruhl, Becky Shaw by Gina Gionfriddo, Maple and Vine by Jordan Harrison (co-commission with Berkeley Repertory Theatre), Big Love and The Glory of the World by Charles Mee, and Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama).
