in this book the companies and products that you’ll see in these pages are a mind-blowing compendium of period inspiration. Goods are well designed and of high quality, offering a true alternative to the short-lived trends in big-box stores and even many showrooms. Old-house owners know that the last thing the house needs is adoption of the current fad, because that’ll be the first thing the next owners will want to tear out. Better to listen to the house. Still, whether your house is vintage, a true antique, or brand new, you will find here an introduction to timeless design—and lots of creative ideas. Period-inspired isn’t the same thing as “traditional.” In fact, some of the furnishings, decorating ideas, and techniques are pretty wild. For listings, we favor companies of high reputation, products with authenticity, and materials beautiful and traditional. You’ll find smaller companies and artisans selling direct to the customer. You’ll also find appropriate specialty lines from larger manufacturers. All of these sometimes hard-to-find companies, in the opinion of our editors and contributors, offer excellent products and good value. Look for editorial highlights throughout the issue: inspirational projects; shop tours done in the field; house styles; glossaries; and helpful hints on such topics as countertop choices and paint palettes. And by all means let us know if you have a suggestion for a company to include next time!

ENJOY DIVERSE INFLUENCES PAST & PRESENT THE BEST HOMES ARE COMFORTABLE, PERSONAL, UNIQUE. TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY CO-EXIST—AND, FOR MANY OWNERS, PERIOD DESIGN MAY PROVIDE INSPIRATION. we’re in the midst of a booming revival of all periods of architecture and interior design. You can find inspired carpets and tiles, furniture, hardware, fabrics and wallpapers, and lighting. Some is contemporary, some interpretive of styles past, some true reproduction. Paint colors are grouped into well-researched palettes; hardware is authentic in style and finish. Reproductions may be “document”—that is, a replication of the original, in its scale and colorway. Others are adapted for modern taste or a new use. Many are the result of creative adaptation, and these often surpass the originals in every way. Add the traditional decorating market to period reproductions, and it’s quite a feast.

If your house is of indeterminate pedigree, or if it has had its original character remodeled right out of it, try using period design concepts to enhance what it does have to offer. “This is all the good stuff!” said a design-savvy friend, on receiving an earlier edition of this Design Center Sourcebook. It’s true: The above

RESPECT THE BONES, THEN DO YOUR THING

Preservation essentially means “let it be.” Keep in mind the difference between that which is permanent (ripping out the staircase) and what is ephemeral (adding a modern light fixture). Not that it’s always quite so clear; painting over original, natural-finish mahogany woodwork for the first time in 160 years comes to mind! That’s reversible, but only after hard work and environmental impact. Do no harm, then decorate as you wish.

The

Many decorators gravitate toward trends, rather than considering timeless qualities that have staying power. This book gives you a head start on alternatives—materials and furnishings rooted in the past, but often adapted for modern taste and use. You may discover here a material that your roofer or hardware-store clerk insists “isn’t made anymore.” From wide-plank floors to true linoleum, primitive stencils to Arts & Crafts pendant friezes, big porcelain farm sinks to Sputnik chandeliers: Yes, they still make it! In the last chapter, we even list maintenance and retrofitting options, from compatible wood epoxies to small-duct air conditioning. Once you can recognize the elements that define the interior and lend scale, you’ll have a good idea of what may fit your house. You’ll avoid doing things that clash with the underlying architecture —a misstep that’d make the next owner itch to remodel yet again.

& reviv revivalbaths how to design a kitchen that will still look good and function well in 20 years? By looking to your old house for design cues, you will create a kitchen that “goes with the house.” Rely on such timeless materials as wood and stone. Downplay anachronistic contemporary materials by keeping design simple or by incorporating period conventions. In cabinets and millwork, take design cues from your dining room, or from an old pantry in the house or the neighborhood. Regarding period details and materials, try to use only those that are related to the date and style of the house. Today’s bathroom trends include classic and retro designs: subway tile or painted beadboard, periodinspired fixtures, historical lighting, even nickel fittings. Modeling a new bathroom on those of the early 20th century is one approach in an old house, which would not have had indoor bathrooms before ca. 1890 or later.

5 tips for TIMELESS COUNTERS Aim for materials

that suit the style of your house and the era when it was built. The older the house, the more sensitivity required. For those of us with 20th-century homes, options abound.

1. Mix and match. Choose wood counters for a dry prep or pantry area, marble for rolling out dough, a manmade surface for wet or hot areas.

2. Play up the details. Finish counters with traditional edge profiles (ogee,

bullnose) or, in mid-century kitchens, metal trim. 3. Consider an integral sink or a backsplash made of the same material as the counter. The sleek look is both of the moment and timeless—as well as easy-care. 4. Buy locally sourced stone. Soapstone, slate, and area-specific stones have been mined in the Appalachians from Virginia to Maine for more than 150 years; limestone, marble, and granite are quarried in the Midwest (especially Indiana). These materials are natural and authentic. right: New England soapstone fits the antique character of a kitchen in a 1730 house. 24

Soapstone is so timeless, many synthetic and even natural stones are now marketed as facsimiles of this easy-care, nearly indestructible stone. Other materials “may look like soapstone, but they don’t have its heat retention qualities,” says owner Glenn Bowman, noting that in the 19th century people used their soapstone sinks for nearly every chore involving water. “They heated water and filled the sink, washing the kids, dishes, clothes. The stone kept the water warm.” Soapstone was the original laboratory countertop material. While it’s unaffected by chemicals in cleansers or acids in foods, it scratches

easily. Left alone, minor scratching creates a patina. For the fastidious, any marring is easily buffed out with fine steel wool. Freshly cut stone oxidizes from light grey to dark charcoal over some months. Applying mineral oil evens out the process. Unlike granite and marble, soapstone does not need to be sealed. Their countertops and sinks have been made the same way for decades— with technical improvements for precision. Cuts for a sink, for instance, are made on a table saw with a masonry blade. Sink bottoms are beveled toward the drain by use of a CNC router. Fabrication is in Vermont, or on site within 250 miles or so.

SENSIBILITY These rooms are part of a radical solution for a small, dark basement kitchen.

1

The ca. 1880 Romanesque Revival town house in Chicago had an awkward floor plan; the small galley kitchen, especially, was impractical, with little light or ventilation. A bold but historically sympathetic new design by Holabird & Root opened up the back of the house for an 800square-foot, two-storey addition (with the kitchen below, and a new conservatory or sunroom above). The kitchen has three separate areas: one for cooking, the second as a cleanup scullery and butler’s pantry, and a third for food storage (in a pantry hidden under the stairs). The design of the kitchen has British connotations, both in its location in the bottom-floor “English basement” and because of its unfitted layout with a separate scullery. An open stairway leads from the kitchen up to the conservatory. The main cooking area has restaurant-grade, stainless-steel appliances, sinks, and countertops. Glass-fronted cabinets and shirred cotton plaid skirting keep the kitchen rooted in its 19th-century origins. produced by Brian D. Coleman

1. THE RANGE AS HEARTH

4

The main cooking area is anchored by a restaurant-grade, stainlesssteel Garland stove. Its utilitarian appearance is timeless, but the historical look comes from setting it in a “hearth” alcove with a mantelshelf above.

2. VINTAGE ACCENTS

The kitchen is furnished, not spare, and softened with period-style lighting with hand-painted shades, topiarymotif wallpaper in English green, and an extensive collection of green majolica and dishware.

With a tin ceiling above and a slate floor laid in a traditional black-and-ivory checkerboard, the room feels like an old Chicago eatery. The butcherblock center island was in fact made from a vintage grocery-store checkout counter.

The scullery–pantry beyond the kitchen proper was designed for easy cleanup. Glass-front cabinets allow accessible storage of china and stemware. Open shelves display 19th-century plates and pottery. Wooden countertops are more forgiving to delicate china.

SHOP TOUR

Elmira Stove Works Elmira, Ontario (800) 295-8498 elmirastoveworks.com

Not long ago, Tony Dowling took us on a Zoom tour of Elmira Stove Works, where employees assemble, finish, and trim out the various designs for the company’s antique- and retro-style refrigerators, ranges, cookstoves, and other appliances. Eye-popping colors were on display as Dowling Zoomed past finished Northstar refrigerators in red, lime, orange, and burgundy. Then he paused at a workstation where an artisan in protective gear machine-polished a curved, footed cookstove leg from the Antique line. Soon to be renamed Heritage, appliances in the Antique line look like late-19th-century cookstoves, with lustrous black, white, or bisque finishes (plus Cayenne Pepper Red and Liberty Blue), and nickel or copper trim. Both lines have all the modern components of a quality refrigerator, oven, or range.

They appeal to customers in the restoration market, but also find a niche with clients looking for something unique to furnish a log cabin or contemporary apartment. Begun in 1975 by Tom Hendrick, the company sells and distributes its appliances all over the country and other parts of the world. Hendrick had been selling wood-burning Findlay Oval cookstoves to the Mennonite community near his hometown in Ontario, when one of his stove-part suppliers decided to leave the business. “So Tom bought all of the tooling and parts for the Findlay Oval,” says Dowling, who is

Elmira’s vice president of sales and marketing. “He loaded up two tractor-trailers and brought everything back to a chicken barn in Elmira.” Tom’s son, Brian Hendrick, now runs operations, but we ran into Elmira’s long-time owner on the shop floor. He was selecting components for Elmira’s longest-selling product, which has no electrical parts or digital displays. “Tom still likes to handle those,” says Dowling.

revivals. Here you’ll find companies with unsurpassed expertise in tile design and tilemaking. Even manufactured tile has gone far beyond the 4 x 4 square; choose from hexes, octagons, oblongs, diamonds, and rhomboids in many sizes. Mesh-mounted basketweave and herringbone tiles update traditional patterns. Composed of tiny pieces of stone or glass called tesserae, mosaics can be laid in almost any pattern or as a mural. Tile is, of course, used throughout the house, not just in the kitchen and bath. Use it to add style or period sensibility to an entryway, a fireplace surround, a wet bar, an indoor or outdoor fountain, a conservatory, or a floor. Tile is a durable finishing material that approaches a true art form.

Motawi Tileworks Ann Arbor, Michigan (734) 213-0017 motawi.com

In Ann Arbor, Motawi Tileworks produces a dizzying range of tile, for

both architectural installations and as collectible art. Styles range from Arts & Crafts

to Mid-century Modern, with many special collections, and new work continually added. As a newly minted art-school graduate from the University of Michigan, Nawal Motawi took her restless spirit and interest in the applied arts to Detroit to learn tile-making at the venerable Pewabic Pottery. Two years later, in 1992, she was back in Ann Arbor, making tiles in a garage studio; at first, she sold them out of a booth at the local farmer’s market. Motawi Tileworks’ process is simple, but handcraftsman-

ship shows in every step. Tile designs are first etched into plaster molds. Clay is then die-pressed into the mold, and the pressed tiles are removed and trimmed. After an initial bisque firing, singlecolor tiles are hand-dipped in glaze, then returned to the kiln for a final firing. Tiles with multiple colors are hand-glazed using the cuenca (later called tube-lining) technique, where glazes are carefully added to the “basins” created by thin,

raised lines in the clay. “We make products that people love and will pay for,” says Nawal Motawi, owner and lead designer. “We demonstrate that a human-centered workplace can be very successful.” Indeed: The company she founded has since purchased its clay supplier, Rovin Ceramics, and opened Motawi Downtown in the Ann Arbor Art Center. The firm employs over 30 people, and the collection is far-ranging.

furniture is shown more-or-less by period in these pages. (Styles do, however, overlap, and revivals come and go.) Furniture can complement a room by virtue of its proportion, shape, material, and fabric pattern. Or it can complement the room because it comes from the same period and style: Hepplewhite furniture in a Federal house, furniture designed by C.F.A. Voysey for an Arts & Crafts Tudor. Visit most furniture showrooms, even those selling to the trade, and you’re on your own. In these pages, however, as at oldhouseonline.com, you’ll find manufacturers and craftspeople who are attuned to period design, and they can help you set a direction and even develop an eye. Period rooms are the goal of a very small niche of old-house owners. Most take an eclectic approach, mixing handed-down furniture and comfortable pieces with the occasional splurge. Keep proportion in mind, but know that spare, mid-century chairs can play well in a room dripping with ornamental plaster.

A typical room might include a subtle color palette, art tile, wallpaper, and lighting. The pair have worked on large civic commissions and residences. These partners in life and business have collaborated for 35 years. Carefully selected hardwood, often from one tree, is cut and milled by machine; everything else is by hand. No machine finishes exist on surfaces or carvings, and carvings are not sanded. Schmitt says, “The tool is so sharp, it burnishes the wood.” If the project calls for a repetitive motif, it’s often cast in plaster from

an original Schmitt carving. Before installation, Schmitt paints or gilds the cast panels or insets. Debey Zito made her name through the exquisite furniture she reproduced for Greene & Greene’s Blacker House. These days she’s doing more interior design work. As in the old guild system, she’ll hire collaborating artisans to make the stained glass or metalwork, to embroider the portiere, according to her vision. Terry Schmitt has added kitchen design/ build. The couple also give woodworking classes, many geared to women.

Good Furniture is Worth It

Cheap furniture starts to look bad long before you have to throw it out. Good traditional furniture is well proportioned, and well crafted of excellent materials. All good furniture is expensive, but it’s also a reasonable investment in comfort and longevity. Good furniture is worth waiting for. And most people will indeed have to wait, furnishing one room at a time, even buying one good piece a year. Drapery, for example, can be done in layers; you don’t lose anything by living with lace curtains while you save for the silk panels that will hang over them. It’s the same with carpeting: buy the bound sisal now, and when you can afford a handmade

Persian carpet, the sisal can be your summer rug or move to a bedroom. But cheap furniture will be a disappointment from the start. Furnishing a house is personal. Most people do it without a great deal of forethought, mixing what they have, what they inherited, and what they like in an idiosyncratic overlap of function and whimsy. Others take a more studied approach. A percentage rely on a professional decorator or interior designer to sort through the endless possibilities, and to avoid expensive mistakes. Given the cost, it makes sense to buy furniture pieces with timeless design, and which complement the house.

ORGANIC & CASUAL A predilection for MidCentury Modern style leads to a forever home.

He’d settled into “a perfectly nice neocolonial” when the homeowner stumbled upon this 1959 Modern house with its floating staircase, three-sided stone fireplace, cathedral ceiling, and walnut and teak built-ins. Mid-century Modern describes a style popular from about 1934 until 1965, which is characterized by linear spaces, modern use of natural materials, and integration with the outdoors (with the use of large expanses of glass). In this house, vintage pieces found on eBay and at auction mingle with 21st-century furnishings, striking a balance between style and comfort: “My idea of Mid-century Modern is warm and organic—clean lines balanced by color and texture,” says the owner. produced by Patricia Poore

photographs by Gridley + Graves

MODERN WOOD The use of dark, close-grained woods like walnut distinguishes Modern interiors. Open-plan rooms with large windows balance the dark wood of beams and builtins. In the downstairs den, walnut panels on walls match built-in walnut bookcases.

50

MODERN STONE

Used in both the entry and foyer, Pennsylvania flagstone floors connect indoors and out while introducing the textures and colors of nature. Continuing the indoor/outdoor dialog, the use of natural stone softens the strong, modern statement made by the soaring stone fireplace.

Knoll’s Petal end table is a 1960 design by Richard Schultz, who said he was inspired by Queen Anne’s lace. The top of the outdoor table is teak, the base available in seven colors. MSRP $1,160. knoll.com

Earthy and period-compatible, cork flooring is warm, sounddampening, water-resistant, and easy on the feet. It can even be sanded for refinishing. Expanko’s ½"-thick Heirloom cork is available in 12"x12", 24"x24", and custom tile sizes. expanko.com The iconic Womb chair (and matching settee for two) were designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll in 1948. The metal frame is finished in black or polished chrome; many upholstery choices offered. Settee starts at $6,519. knoll.com MODERN GLASS

Glass doors, clerestory windows, and large glazed expanses connect rooms to outside space. The interiors feel much larger than their actual square footage. In the dining room, an original mirrored wall over a walnut buffet reflects a vintage Sputnik chandelier.

MODERN METAL

Original railings in this house are found on the curved staircase and the upper catwalk. Their utilitarian simplicity is simple and modern. Like the floating stair treads, slender metal components do nothing to detract from the open floor plan.

curtains to carpets

curtains to carpets simple, layered, or changed with the seasons, textiles will

finish your rooms like nothing else can. Fabrics, pillows, and rugs add softness, comfort, and texture. They muffle

sound. They round out a dominant color scheme, or introduce accents. They suggest a style or period by virtue of their design, volume, material, and trimmings. Although the best late-Victorian rooms are heavily layered, textiles do not have to be excessive to be effective. The homespun, damasks, and quilts of early American interiors added color and comfort without fussiness. American Arts & Crafts interiors (ca.1895–1930) relied on simple, embroidered curtains and portieres (or interior doorway curtains), stenciled table scarves, and plush carpets. Drapery is perhaps the most significant use of fabric. There’s no need to re-create extravagant drapery. Imagine above

SHOP TOUR

Morris & Co./Sanderson Design Group London, U.K./New York, N.Y. (201) 399-0500 morrisandco.sandersondesigngroup.com

Join our tour of Morris & Co.—the direct descendant of the company

founded by English designer, philosopher, and political activist William Morris, in 1861. We started west of London and then traveled northwest to Lancaster. At a visit to the company’s archives and design studio in Denham, archivist Keren Protheroe showed a small group of us materials from the nearly intact collection, which includes 20,000 textile samples, pattern books, and most interestingly, ledgers with annotated designs. “The ledger is where they’d use a spectrometer to take an accurate color off the original,” Dr. Protheroe says. “We have four books that go from the first papers printed in 1864 through those in 1895.” Morris, she continued, most loved textiles. They, like everything else, were made in

his workshop, where women worked as weavers. “There is a changing style to the patterns. I think that the early Morris patterns are very medieval.” These days, Morris & Co. textiles are printed at Standfast & Barracks in Lancaster, where fabric pattern and coloration takes an artisanal approach. Techniques include rotary printing (one roller screen per color, with up to 20 colors per design); flatbed screen printing, where the design is applied using mesh flat screens (up to 24 colors); and digital printing. Wallpapers for Morris & Co. and many designer brands in

the U.K. and U.S. are printed at Antsey Wallpaper Co. in Loughborough. Techniques include surface, digital, and block printing. We watched as eight-color surface printing took place. Paint flows; a blade applies it to the cylinder; saturated inks drip into a machine in a long line of machinery. In an astonishing transformation, rolls of freshly printed ‘Bird and Pomegranate’ wallpaper fold up in a tray at the line’s end. —Mary Ellen Polson

Acorn Manufacturing Mansfield, Massachusetts (800) 835-0121 acornmfg.com

Door & cabinet hardware, historical nails, and baseboard-

radiator covers may not sound related, but at Acorn Manufacturing, they are all part of the history-minded company long known for its forged builders’ hardware.

The third-generation business began in owner Eric Delong’s grandfather’s garage, in 1937. Acorn acquired Tremont Nail, the oldest maker of square-cut nails in the nation, in 2006. Another acquisition, Overboards, makes highquality, decorative covers for baseboard heaters. Acorn’s signature product is its forged-iron builders’ hardware, made in its factory in Mansfield, Massachusetts. The process starts with milled steel that’s been rolled to impress a surface pattern, which resembles weathered steel. Individual pieces of hardware are stamped in small batches at various pressures, using

a 125-ton die press. Complex pieces, like ornate strap hinges, are first laser cut and forged, then hand hammered. Anything with a curl or bend is subjected to hot-forged treatments, which are hand manipulated. The result is hardware that’s timeless, in styles suited to period homes. Still marketed under the 200-year-old brand name, the roughly 30 varieties made by Tremont Nail are heated and cut on antique machines made ca. 1850–1900. Forged nails have almost twice the holding power of wire-cut nails. They cut into the grain of the wood rather than splitting it. Common, clinch rosehead, spike,

and other varieties closely resemble nails found in houses a century old or more, so they’re ideal for restoration. Some varieties are also annealed—heat-treated at high temperatures and quenched with water—which produces superior masonry nails. Ironically for such an old business, Tremont’s annealed nails are in especially high demand in new construction in hurricaneprone areas in the South and Caribbean.

Plaster Magic Founder & Plaster Repair Expert Rory Brennan (Center)

YOU CAN DO THIS

®

Can you do these simple tasks? Drill • Spray • Glue • Clamp If so, then you can repair plaster.

Plaster Magic is a permanent solution. This method was devised to empower homeowners and contractors to produce professional results, while repairing plaster in half the time and at half the cost. The Plaster Magic method makes plaster stronger than when it was new by fixing the only thing wrong: its attachment to the lath.

The good news is that plaster cracks can easily be fixed with Plaster Magic adhesive reattachment. By using the wood lath UNDER the plaster to bridge the crack, you make the strongest repair possible. Plus, because nothing needs to go on the surface of the wall or ceiling to stabilize the plaster, you reduce the time and mess involved in repair and the amount of money spent. There is no mesh or paper tape, no screws or washers to cover up.

Plaster repair consists of two separate tasks: stability and cosmetics. The first, how strong is your plaster and lath together? The second, how do you want your plaster to look? Stability: Don’t be fooled into remove/ replace/resurface methods for your project. Anything applied to the plaster surface is being applied to paint, which doesn’t have the durability of Plaster Magic. Paint is only designed to look pretty, not support walls or ceilings.

Cosmetics: This is what your plaster will look like when it is painted. While you don’t need to apply anything to the surface of the plaster, many homeowners do apply thin layers of joint compound to fill in minor divots, giving it a pleasing appearance. Ready to make easy, long-lasting repairs and enjoy professional-quality results? Visit www.plastermagic.com to learn more. There are videos to help you get started, or you can call us and we will walk you through your project!

Here is a typical example of a DIYer repair job made possible with Plaster Magic. We celebrate our customer’s success. This is what persistence does. YOU CAN DO THIS!

The plaster wall was cracked and bulging.

The plaster was stabilized around the bulge, which was removed. The red washers are temporary clamps removed after the adhesive has set.

The hole was patched in with Plaster Magic patching plaster and topped with ready mix joint compound.

walls & ceilings once you discover the decorated wall—time-honored paint techniques and printed papers, embossed surfaces,

ornamental plaster, carved wood—white walls may come

to feel like the absence of finish, or remind you of the whitewash once used in stables. Options go from subtle to fantastic, and needn’t be copied outright. True colors of the Colonial period include brilliant yellow, Prussian blue and turquoise, clear green, blood red, plus black and rich ivories tinted with grey, yellow, or pink. Strong interior color continued through the Greek Revival or Empire period. By the 1870s the tripartite treatment was fashionable: walls divided into dado (or wainscot) below the chair rail, a fill or field section, and a frieze at the top of the wall. The Arts & Crafts period is often described as ascetic, a reaction against Victorian excess—but, at least by modern standards, the interiors were still highly decorated. Colonial Revival rooms may feature off-whites, cream, and grey.

Anything But White? Not always, but often enough, it’s an old-house rule: Avoid the aggressive use of white paint. There’s a reason big old Victorians were called “white elephants” before polychrome schemes came back to popularity. Use a glaring, landscapeunfriendly white to paint out all the details of a big, tall, complex house, and you’ve brutalized the architecture. The rule applies, too, in many interiors. Bungalows and other homes of the Arts & Crafts period make a virtue of quiet, wood-trimmed, womb-

like interiors. The front porch filters light from the living room. Tall, oak wainscots and beamed ceilings, not to mention low-wattage light bulbs and amber mica lamps, yield a cozy dimness. Learn to love it! If you fight it by painting the ceiling between beams and the plaster wall above the wainscot bright white, you will ruin the design intention. The room will not be appreciably brighter. But the wood will now read as very dark indeed in what seems a stark, blackand-white scheme. oldhouseonline.com

For decades, Bradbury & Bradbury

has been the ne plus ultra of Victorian roomset wall-

papers, dating to its beginnings in the 1970s. English and American Arts & Crafts papers soon followed. Since Steve Bauer took over about 15 years ago, however, the company’s silkscreen and digital offerings have expanded to cover many other 20thcentury styles. “We are still, essentially, a Victorian wallpaper printer,” says Bauer, who with his wife, Lisa, bought the company from founder Bruce Bradbury. “That collection continues to be our bread and butter. We print a generous amount of Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, and Vintage patterns as well.” Those Vintage Collection papers include lines from the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s, as well as a suite of children’s papers, including cowboy themes from the 1950s. In the works

is a new High Victorian Gothic roomset. Most Bradbury papers are still handsilkscreened; craftspeople apply ink through patterned screens. Digital printing makes sense when the pattern has a large number of colors, and “digital allows us to incorporate textures, effects, and backgrounds that silkscreen doesn’t. We can create a pattern that looks like it’s printed on linen, grasscloth, stamped leather, etc.”

Driwood Mouldings Florence, South Carolina (888) 245-9663 driwood.com

For a company that turns out architecturally correct mouldings by the houseful, Driwood Mouldings is an astonishingly compact business. Just seven employees turn out all the fine work from scratch. There’s nothing new about the difficulty in locating highquality interior millwork at an affordable price. When, in the late 1950s, building contractor Charles E. Mitchell Sr. was looking for period trim to complete his home, he found a supplier in Georgia that had what he wanted. He was in a hurry—so he bought Driwood Mouldings, lock, stock, and barrel, and moved it to his hometown of Florence, S.C. Now managed by Charles’s grandson Mitchell Powell, the company is successful largely because of its milling techniques. Rather than laboriously hand-carving trim, nearreplicas of egg-and-dart bed moulding and bolection-faced chair rail are produced on vintage moulders and embossers. One push-feed moulder dates

to the early 1930s, but the oldest machine on the floor is an embosser with a patent date from the 1870s. The embosser does its magic with cast-bronze dies that imprint various patterns under heat and pressure. After the die is put in place, it’s heated with a propane torch before the millwork is fed into the machine. The operator rotates the die by hand: “You have to subtly adjust the heat or the pressure to get it to create the design perfectly,” Powell says. Simpler designs may make one pass, while ornate ones go through up to four times. The company has more than 500 mouldings in stock and makes custom millwork to order. About half of Driwood’s work is for restoration, the rest for new construction. Whether

the order is for a single room or an entire house, a company representative usually sits down with the customer or architect and re-draws the submitted plans—because most clients aren’t skilled in the art of classical proportion. “When it comes to the proportions of a cornice—even architects aren’t trained [in that] anymore. What we do requires human interaction at every step.”

restoring a

CRAFTSMAN DREAM HOME

With broad, overhanging eaves and a wide front porch, the picturesque house beckons at dusk. Many original features of this commanding 1914 home were intact, from the exterior’s bracketed eaves and broad front porch to the quarter-sawn oak beams and mahogany woodwork inside. Yet the place had had little attention for 40 years, and the wet climate had taken its toll. Wood shingles were sanded and stained, returned to their silvery grey color with an application of Sherwin– Williams Gray Shingle; trim was painted S–W Chocolate Brown. Windows with old glass were carefully preserved, the sashes rehung with new ropes. Eleven original screen doors were still in use, so they were stripped and resealed with clear varnish to show off the Douglas fir.

1 1. ALWAYS A GRAND HOUSE This 4,800-square-foot house was always a stunner, boasting such amenities as a rib-cage shower, a built-in vacuum system, and even a carriage house with a car-wash built into the eaves. An ornate stained-glass window lights the stair landing. The side window is one of a pair found stored in the house and installed during restoration.

2. THE PORTE COCHÈRE Inheriting her father’s 1924 Chevrolet Tourer made the homeowner remember this house, which she had long coveted. The house came on the market at an opportune time for her family. It has its original porte cochère, translated as “coachman’s door” and used to mean a covered vehicle entrance.

Clinker bricks are delightful accidents, the result of over-firing in the kiln. Irregular and lumpy, intensely colored, they were a favorite masonry detail of architects Charles and Henry Greene. One company making new ones—called Old Pasadena Clinkers—is Gavin Historical Brick Co., historicalbricks.com

4

The Westmoreland Series from Old California Lighting is notable for the illuminated “cupola” on top. The tapered lantern is solid brass, available in seven handapplied finishes and eight glass options, for wall, post, or ceiling mount—a California design perfect for artful homes. oldcalifornia.com The Craftsman Bungalow is laid in thick, red-cedar shingles. Houses of the Victorian and bungalow periods often had subtle ornamentation produced by fancy cuts to the butt end of shingles, which create a pattern on the wall. Find fancy-cut and steambent shingles and shakes at Custom Shingles (Florida): customshingles.com

3. EXTENSIVE REPAIRS

Most of the more than 400 rafter ends suffered from rot. Rafters were repaired with Abatron epoxies for wood, and sealed with copper caps. Exposed rafter tails are a signature motif of Craftsman and bungalow houses, with roots in both Nordic chalet and Japanese design.

4. SPIRIT OF GREENE & GREENE

If the house in Portland, Oregon, looks like it belongs in Pasadena, there’s good reason. It resembles chalet–bungalows designed by California architect brothers Greene & Greene, of which the most famous is the Gamble House, now a museum. The original owner of this house had visited southern California and was perhaps influenced by their work.

If not a porte cochère, how about a pergola? These open-roofed structures may be attached to the house or freestanding in the garden. Note the decoratively cut rafter tails on this semi-circle design with classical columns, from Chadsworth. shop.columns.com oldhouseonline.com

Consider the Mantel

A mantel or mantelpiece is the decorative frame for the fireplace opening, usually with a shelf above the firebox. The sur-

round is the material between the firebox and the mantel—heatproof stone, concrete, tile, or brick.

• Like the staircase, a mantel

is a prominent millwork element that may define the style of the house, if not its date. If yours is original and fits the house,

wonderful! Be respectful in any upgrading. If your house is missing a mantel (or several), or you’re planning to add a fireplace,

consider how proportions, materials, and styles changed over time. For every period, multiple design options exist.

left Late Victorian fireplaces were often embellished with tile and an overmantel. 98

LEARN MORE > Whether as a promenade, a covered terrace, or a free-

standing garden feature, a pergola is a bold statement, with practical

advantages as a sunscreen and as a support for plants. A pergola may spring from the building or stand on its own. Shading the carriage doors, a narrow pergola–sunscreen is a softening feature on many new garages. There’s a pergola for

every style, from formal Italian to Adirondack, California, and Prairie School. Precedent sug-

gests, though, that the pergola does not have to match the style of the house.

right A simple pergola enhances a masonry house in Santa Barbara.
