As the history of the martial arts over the last half century is documented, the name of Furman Marshall has attained iconic status. A former Marine and Action Hall of Famer, Supreme Grand Master Furman Marshall is a 10th degree black belt, who along with Fulbright Scholar Phil Cunningham, founded Simba DoJang in 1967. A student of legendary Ki Whang Kim and Soo Wong Lee, Marshall has either personally promoted or sanctioned the promotion of over 1000 black belts in 20 Simba affiliated schools. Prior to his retirement from the ring, at the youthful age of 65, Marshall was a fierce competitor with the likes of legends Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris and Joe Hayes. While, standing only 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 168 pounds, Marshall won hundreds of trophies and his mentees have amassed thousands of tournament wins. In fact, in 1977, Black Belt Magazine published an article proclaiming, “Simba DoJang Washington D.C.’s Winningest Karate Studio.” Simba students have competed in Afghanistan, Canada, Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Russia and Spain. It is hard to believe that Simba began in a basement of a public housing project in an area in Washington riddled by crime. Marshall is credited with not only savings countless youth from drugs, violence, death and jail but in transforming entire communities. Marshall empowered neighborhoods. Prior to 1980 over 5,000 students had trained in Simba along with 30 black belts. Marshall’s business model was unique. It

steadfastly was “not for profit” and free to all. Kids who wished to participate in tournaments were sponsored by the group, who pooled resources. Tournament winnings were reinvested so others could participate in future events. Marshall made sure that Simba’s primary mission was to serve underprivileged students in the inner city. As Marshall recalled in the Black Belt Magazine article, “I teach in the ghetto where I prefer to stay because of the need to help keep young boys and girls out of trouble.” Over the next forty-five years under Marshall’s leadership, Simba’s schools would start in no less than 10 inner city recreation centers. These centers were in the most crime ridden areas of the nation’s capital. Murder, rape, robbery and muggings surrounded these facilities. Simba was not unscathed. On several occasions, hoodlums challenged Simba’s presence and threatened its existence in the community. Intimidation and attempts at disrupting class occurred. Marshall standing alone, bravely and with steadfast determination “invited” the intruders to meet him, “outside.” What occurred afterwards is the substance of “urban legends.” Suffice it to say going forward no one interfered with Marshall’s mission to teach the underserved.

Marshall not only defended Simba’s right to exist, but through his personal example he was a role model for his students and the entire community. He neither smoked nor drank, allowed vulgar language, lack of courtesy or disrespect in his class. Low hanging, beltless jeans are never allowed in Simba’s DoJang. Moreover don’t be surprised if Marshall corrected kids on the street who were not part of the class, about their sloppy pants. Marshall believes that “respect begin first with the individual and continues to others.” People have often asked Marshall how he came up with the name Simba for his martial arts school. Marshall replies, “Simba means lion. A lion represents strength and staying power.” Simba also challenges minority kids to think outside the box by trying nontraditional sports. Character building, discipline and hard work were the linchpins of Simba. Fundamental to Simba was respect for all humans regardless of differences. It is little wonder that Simba schools are diverse, welcoming all races and creeds. Schools have opened in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Kansas, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Nevada, Alaska and Afghanistan. Never to rest on his laurels, Marshall sees challenges as an opportunity to excel. In fact, he was a champion skier, founding Black Ski, the first black ski club; a champion drag car and motorcycle racer, founding the Renegade Racing team; a champion skydiver; a champion tennis player, scuba diver, hand glider, water skier, horse rider, and of course a star football, baseball and basketball player. It was not enough for Marshall to expand his own sports horizons but he wished to widened opportunities for African-Americans. Marshall does not

believe in the word “can’t.” In fact, in a 1993 article published in the Washington Post, Marshall said, “I just want to be a living example to minority youngsters to show them that they can do anything they want to do… They just have to learn to control their fears. That’s all that prevents them from being karate champions, Olympic skiers, sky divers and anything else they can dream. I have a moral obligation to see that they can do it.” Truly, Marshall is a visionary leader ahead of his time. Early on, Marshall organized trips for kids to go horseback riding, skiing, roller skating and cycling. This kept many of them out of trouble. As mentioned previously, Black Ski opened a new world for minorities to skiing. In fact, in only a year, Black Ski was the largest club of its kind in America with over 700 members. It sponsored trips to Canada, Vermont and Colorado. In Colorado, members even skied on the Olympic tracks. For those students unable to afford trips, Marshall would raise funds from numerous doctors and lawyers who had also joined Black Ski. When asked what motivates him, Marshall replies, “changing the lives of young people to become productive and positive citizens.” Over a forty-five year time period, many of these young folks have not only become some of the nation’s most respected marital artists, but leading politicians, lawyers, doctors, teachers, scientists, law enforcement officers, and government officials. It is easy to see why Jhoon Rhee, the “Father of Tae Kwon Do in America” refers to Furman Marshall as “a humble and kind man.” Furman is a 2012 Ambassador of the Martial Arts.

Dominic's Elite Muay Thai Fights Recently I attended an awesome Muay Thai event in Daytona Beach Florida sponsored by Dominic's Elite Muay

Thai & MMA School. It was an action packed event, with over 10 fights. The School's who attended were from different parts of Florida. I strongly recommend if you have a Muay Thai school in your area and you truly want to be an MMA competitor, I would strongly recommend that you attend that school for 6 months to a year. If there are no Muay Thai schools in your area, there are various websites that list Muay Thai seminars in your state. Make sure that you fight in at least 10 - 15 amateur MMA events before you turn pro. I know that in some states, the

Athletic Commission has approved pro MMA events, but has not yet approved amateur MMA events. If that's the

case in your state, then go outside of your state and have as many fights as possible to gain experience. I see too many competitors automatically turn pro in their state because amateur MMA has not been approved by the Athletic Commission yet. But if you do this, down the road, you're going to meet some of these guys who have gained a ton of experience in amateur competition and you will not like the outcome. To me, it's equivilent to fighting in the black belt division in a tournament when you've never attended martial arts classes at all. So down the road, believe me, you're going to take a few terrible beatings and because of that, you will get discouraged from discouraged from competing in MMA and stop fighting. Not to mention, during the course of your fights, you're probably going to end up with a broken nose, maybe a broken jaw, perhaps a broken leg... for what? $500 to win, $300 to lose? Take my advice on this one, I am traveling the whole country attending both amateur and professional MMA events - and there are alot of competitors getting hurt really bad for very little money. Dominic's Elite Muay Thai Event was a great mixture of MMA techniques. He did a great job of evenly matching fights. There were no mis-matches, which is a real credit to Mr. Dominic. It's one of the reasons why I enjoyed the event so much. He is a class act. He showed alot of respect for me, and for Action Martial Arts Magazine by putting me right up front where the action was and so I could get good pictures of the event. I would like to wish Dominic continued good luck with his Muay Thai and MMA School. A lot of his students are going to turn pro one day, they will be prepared properly and will do well in the ring.

Corruption During MMA Events I attended a pro MMA event in Las Vegas and I guess I should not have been surprised that eventually corruption would start to creep into the MMA events like it has overtaken boxing. I was in the locker room interviewing one of the fighters the day before the fight. A gentleman came by and asked a fighter not to far from me, would he take $15,000 and guarantee him to get knocked out in the 2nd round. Now the reason why the round is so important is because, it's one thing to bet on a fight - and whatever the odds are, whether it's an even bet or someone is slightly favored, the odds would only increase 2 to 1 or 3 to 1. But if the gambler knows who the fighter is and exactly what round the fight will end in, the odds go up to 15 to 20 - 1. So, if that fighter were to accept that $15,000, and let's just say the gambler bet $20,000 on the fight at 15 - 1... this is how much he would have won $300,000! The fighter that he first offered it to said "no", so he went one locker over and he 2nd fighter said yes. I could not believe what I was witnessing. And the fighter did exactly what the gambler wanted - he went down in the 2nd round. Now I have to be very honest - I reported it to the State Athletic Commission, but I reported it anonymously because I just do not want to personally get involved and have Action Martial Arts be involved in corruption. Eventually and hopefully they will get caught. A very very sad day for me as a Martial Artist to witness that first hand. 7 Generation Grandmaster of Five Elder Monk Mew Hing’s 18 Daoist Palms System.

Happy Summer 2012! We all heard the hype start last year about this year and its importance to the Mayan Calendar. This is also the Year of the Dragon in Chinese astrology. Bruce Lee was born in the Year of the Dragon. As for myself, I really don’t believe in anything but Jesus, and yet I have to admit that after four decades of study in various Godless philosophies, that it does hold an innocent interest. Our country seems to be caught up in the winds of change again; to me it is sort of like the 1960’s again on a higher and progressed level. That progress which is truly real, at times makes things seem worse. More realistically, the world is still growing in population which exacerbates social and other issues. Just look at the martial arts. At one time, we were shocked to see a bit of moves on the Green Hornet TV series of the 60’s. Joe Corly introduced TV as a venue to show the sporting aspects with J.T. Will. Enter The Dragon made a media sensation. We saw the emergence of martial arts via Tae Kwon Do in the Olympics. Chain schools followed all over the country. California nightly news covered snippets of Grandmaster Ed Parker’s Internationals in Long Beach California. Magazines were born and jumped quickly on the bandwagon to stake their niche and promote their own. Panther with Joe Jennings evolved to a huge catalog of the world’s finest. The legends like Lewis, Wallace, Urquidez, Rhee, Stone and others were the foundation of legitimacy for new thoughts like publishing rare arts. Encanis, Webb, the Lima Lama pioneers and various prolific writers of many rare systems started sharing, including yours truly. Benny Urqidez helped us get to know Gene Label. Gene was an American icon wrestler on his own. Chin Na became known to us as the kung fu version of grappling Yang Jwing Ming shared much with us through his books. No one can deny the selfless sharing of Stephen Hayes and how he helped us to know more about Ninjitsu. While all these great things were happening, we saw the rest of the world follow our technological flood of prolific ness. Corcoran and Farkis made sere we had encyclopedias to stay organized. Science hit the arts and brought out writers in diverse fields of expertise, all interested in helping the arts to become more holistic. Mathematicians came up with speed and efficiency formulas, herbalists helped us break down ancient herbal formulas into English common name ingredients. The Barefoot Doctor’s Manual remains a bestseller and excellent tool of reference in any martial artists quiver. The energy lines, points, times, effects, massage, cupping, moxibustion, making and storing herbal preparations; all and more in this official paramedic book for barefoot doctors. In synchronicity with these changes came movement splinter groups for the holistic community that carried more Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong book in their timers metaphysical bookstores. Martial arts have so much to offer, it became one of the most popular forms of cross training. It continues to be popular for kids and anti bullying programs. Eating well to stay healthy is a mainstay of martial training. We all have a lot to share with each other to improve our experience with the arts. We have adopted yoga, nutrition, technology and many platforms of cross training. Panther’s respect for the old mentioned built the platform for MMA emergence primarily through Gracie Jujitsu. There has always been the attitude that MMA is real. The only real is

life or death with legal implications. The law represents the rules. Lesnar recently impressed WWE fans with his manhandling of Cena. That said, Cena is smaller, was attacked from behind and Lesnar drew blood, something not seen as often on WWE in modern times. That said, in their TV match Cena wrapped chain around his knuckle and knocked Lesnar straight out. Anyone can draw blood or get wicked, within the overall law and rules. Will he come back for a match with triple H? Kids stuff? – show me where the biggest money is made with the largest following. On the other hand, the Howdy Doody ambiance of these entertainment venues create the ’contrast’ for serious penal code relevant training and legal spy gadgets. By the way, notice how Inside Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do Times, Karate International, Karate Kung-Fu Illustrated and many other icon magazines are no longer with us? Kudos to GM Alan Goldberg for showing longevity, perseverance and steadfastness at the helm of Action Martial Arts Magazine. To finish this season’s column, I will share two standing stationary iron palm meditations from a series of 28 I have on film learning directly from Wai. Use jow before and after the med and take five minutes to do each one. These were valued at $2000 each and you will feel the chi pull to your hands.

Photo Med #1; Three breaths to start. Take a breath and let 60% out. Take a full breath from that point and le t it all out. The Future By Sensei Mark Huard

For Love of the Fight Fourth grader Grant Garnett is happiest when body and mind are in motion. His love for grappling and mixed martial arts surely accomplishes both. From his earliest baby and toddler days, Grant’s need to keep active was evident. If he wasn’t running and playing, keeping his body moving, he was playacting and pretending, nurturing his mind. He loved being in the spotlight and being a part of adult conversation. “He wasn’t ever really a baby,” says Barbara, Grant’s mother. “He was so grown up, so early.” He watched his first UFC battle at age four and was completely hooked. But in spite of Grant’s attraction for the sport, his parents felt he was too young to make such a sole commitment and introduced him to other sports as well. They tried football, soccer, and baseball. Nothing fueled Grant like the UFC. Barbara fully admits her skeptism in allowing her young son to participate in a sport with so much hand to hand contact. Her desire was not for him to become a fighter. Despite Barbara’s reservations, Grant was enrolled in an MMA class with a Ju-Jitsu base and began his training with UFC veteran, Sam Hoger, who remained his trainer for a year and a half. During this time, her view of what being a fighter means changed, and she realized that the mixed martial arts world was simply a part of what made Grant who he was and aspired to be. She also gained insight into the value the sport placed on discipline, respect and honor—lessons he can apply throughout his lifetime. This realization came to the forefront during Grant’s first BJJ class. After only ten minutes into the class, Grant turned to his mother with the biggest smile she’d ever seen from him. Right there, she knew this was what he was meant to do. Only a short month later, he competed in his first tournament—North Houston Kids and Teens BJJ/Submission Grappling—and won first place in no-gi and second place in gi. From that moment on, there was no doubt of Grant’s passion for mixed martial arts or his love for the fight as competition. Since then, he’s taken second place in gi during the UFC Grapplers Quest and during Tournament of Champions 9, as well as other awards and placements. Today, he continues to thrive on challenging arenas and subjects, always yearning to learn more. In his family, school comes first, which is evident from his honor roll status. He’s a student of gifted and talented classes, and particularly enjoys science, math, and history. He trains six days a week and does so in Ju-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo. His training times range from one to three hours at Gracie Barra-Tx and Submission Boxing Academy (SBA), under head instructor Prof.

Draculino, Isael Zuniga, and Frank Adame. Jonathan “Hulk” Harris is a teammate and coach as well. When he’s not training or studying his school work, Grant enjoys hanging out with friends, playing video games, and working out. He also wouldn’t mind eating a quesadillas or two. “I love to compete and have fun,” says Grant, about his favorite aspect of grappling/mixed martial arts. And for his least favorite part: “Losing and boxing drills.” His favorite fighters and idols are Bas Rutten, GSP, and Jon Jones. Participating in mixed martial arts has taught Grant how to believe in himself even when things don’t go his way. And with today’s ever-changing world, confidence and persistence are so important to one’s success at anything. Respect, honor, and blatant courage have been overshadowed and ignored by much of the world today. Grant’s family looks forward to his bright future and will continue to support him in his love for the fight. Sheri Larsen is a published freelancer and short story writer, and KidLit Author. It’s All About Combined Learning Twelve-year-old, seventh grader Ben “The Tiger” Bagbek thrives on exploring and the adventure of discovery. Two wonderful reasons mixed martial arts are perfect for this growing athlete. As a young child, Ben reached and clung to any climbable surface. He ran, practically bouncing off the walls, and had a love for kicking cushy furniture. Slowly, his flamboyant boyish energy calmed, showing structure and focus. Selfdiscipline was naturally emerging within him. At age seven, he began training in grappling and kickboxing at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA. For his initial year, learning to position grapple in the children’s classes was his main objective. He then moved on to the art of submissions to add to his grappling. He continues to absorb his training today, and does so under the instruction of Sensei David Tirelli, Sensei Mike Stine, and Sensei Dashan DuBose. Competing in tournaments has been in his blood since 2008, when he entered the Challenge of Champions. Since that time, Ben has accumulated an amazing resume of titles, competition participation, and awards. With only one test attempt needed, he was awarded his blackbelt in May of 2011, obtaining the coveted title of Sempai. He is a NAGA and Grapplers Quest champion in the expert division, and in 2011 he became #1 in NewYork No-Gi and Gi at NATIONAL RANKED. For a more indepth list of Ben’s titles and martial

arts accomplishments, visit his Facebook Fanpage: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ben-The-TigerBagbek/215210468538272. His You Tube page is also available, for an even closer glimpse into the young athlete in action.

who saw success for him in another athletic arena. His maternal uncle began urging his parents to introduce him to mixed martial arts. With Gavin so engrossed in the game of baseball, it seemed unlikely that he’d want to try anything else. But he did.

Early on, Ben realized that success in the mixed martial arts world takes more than focus on physical training within the sport. He would need to improve in all areas of his life. He began with his diet, being conscious of what he put into his body, and his parents added to that by making sure he got plenty of rest; he continues to concentrate on both today. His school work is also important to him, with social studies, math, and music being his favorite subjects. Feeding his mind as well as his body is one of his highest priorities. “What I like best about school is that I always

He began studying mixed martial arts at the Alan Belcher MMA Club, under the direction of Jeremy South. Soon it became apparent that mixed martial arts was only the beginning for Gavin. A short eight months after his introduction to the sport, he wanted to challenge himself even future and moved on to jujitsu under private instructors Mike and Ann Sanford, who train under Diego Moraes. Not surprisingly, he took to jujitsu with ease. It has been noted that the Sanfords refer to Gavin as a ‘sponge.’ Jujitsu has become Gavin’s greatest passion to date. “I am totally addicted,” says Gavin.

learn,” says Ben. Being a part of the Talented and Gifted program at his elementary school gave Ben the edge to grow in his quest for learning. To begin his seventh grade year, he has been awarded entry into The Baccalaureate School for Global Education, after he successfully passed the required testing and interview. When he’s not concentrating on school work, training at the gym, or competing, he enjoys playing basketball and soccer, reading and chess, and playing in a jazz band. Ballroom dancing is another skill he’s added to his arsenal. When asked to describe his favorite aspect of grappling, Ben maturely answers, “The ability to end someone else’s ability without damaging them. And my favorite for MMA is taking down a person and doing ground and pound.” He really doesn’t have a least favorite aspect about the sport, except when his gloves get in the way, making it harder for him to improve his position. Ben would love for his grappling to take him to the heights of The Ultimate Fighter. But as any young man with life and learning always on his mind, he also aspires to become a lawyer and opening his own Mixed Martial Arts school, where he can share all he’s learned. Sheri Larsen is a published freelancer and short story writer, and KidLit Author. Her website, Writers Ally (http://writersally.blogspot.com), is where she explores writing, children’s literature, and motherhood. She lives in Maine with her husband and four children.

Martial Arts are All in the Family by Sheri Larsen Being naturally agile and a jack-of-all-trades are just two of the numerous reasons seventh grader Gavin Martin has earned the nickname “The Machine” in the mixed martial arts world. He began as most young athletes do, with typical toddler games of rolling a ball around and playing pass. But it didn’t take long for his quick reactions and instincts to mature and yearn for more. Organized sports, primarily baseball, were where his interests turned. Through America’s greatest pastime, he discovered his desire to be a true competitor. As Gavin’s baseball skills grew, so did his new competitive edge. He developed a strong work ethic, which urged him to be his personal best. Being surrounded by supportive parents was an added ingredient to his positive attitude. By the age of ten, his passion for baseball became his sole focus, other than school. It wasn’t long before his attributes were noticed by others,

His training schedule consists of six days a week, covering classes in MMA, BJJ, XMA, wrestling, and conditioning. Learning new elements of the sport is always within his focus, like various flips, which he continues to work on and master. Competing in tournaments and evolving through different transitions are his most cherished parts of the sport. Gavin has placed in the top three in such tournament as NAGA Memphis TN, Louisiana State Championship, and Tournament of Champions 9. He’s also the proud and humble recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation for Best Attitude and two awards for Sportsmanship. “I believe with respect for yourself and your opponent, discipline, and hard work I will be a champion!” as stated on his Facebook Page. But in Gavin’s life, the MMA is not just about him; it’s a family affair. He helps his younger brother hone his MMA skills and encourages his mom and dad, who also participate in MMA classes. “Rules in our house,” says mom about any practicing in the home, “are to keep it clean and careful.” School comes rather easy to Gavin, especially in the language and math departments. Once he completes his homework, he keeps himself busy by doing what normal teenagers do: playing Xbox, riding bikes, and hanging with friends; he still enjoys baseball. He even snacks on a plateful of BBQ chicken now and again. Respect and discipline are some of the wonderful life lessons Gavin has learned through his participation with MMA. He’s a good student and all around respectable kid. “Mixed martial arts have made him even that much better of a kid,” says mom. He prides himself on sharing his inner dedication and passions with others, as well as being a positive example. And with his aspirations to continue on in the MMA and teach other UFC fighters or be a fighter himself, Gavin will have a great platform to do so.

UMMAA MARTIAL ARTS TOURNAMENT Ellicott city, Maryland Sifu Abdulmuhsiy Abdurrahman On December 25th of last year, UMMAA (United Muslims Martial Arts Association) held another gathering for the muslim communities once again here in the quiet and serene section of Ellicott city, in the large and hospitable activity room at the beautiful Masjid (mosque) Dar-ul Taqwa (the abode of faith). This long standing organization started off about 23 years ago in an on going effort to bring togehter ALL muslims from many and any diverse backgrounds under one roof, in order to get to know one another and remove the barriers of "preconceived notions". Please allow me to clarify the fact that although this annual event is organized by muslims, any and all people are welcome to attend and participate. Normally UMMAA has a martial arts expo/exhibitions on this day, however, this time in its long standing history they had their SECOND tournament for all of that long standing time. This was mostly administered by two brothers (Abdulmalik Ahmad and Idris Palmer) in the martial arts for many years, who pushed the idea and concept of a tournament, and what a very HIGHLY successful event it was for all in attendance. Coming from N.Y., N.J., Pa., W. Va., Md., Va., and N.C., about 200 muslim martial artists from many styles, rank levels, and age groups assembled here to win top honors in their respective divisions. In keeping with the true Islamic doctrines, the separation of male and female was put into place in order to not to encourage any unfavorable of forbidden interactions, outside of marriage. Such as looks and stares. In order to facilitate this concept, female judges conducted all of the muslim sisters divisions and activities in a separated area in all competitors and spectators, felt more at ease and relaxed. The event's organizers Brothers Abdulmalik Ahmad and Idris Palmer were very active in obtaining the very, very, beautiful and high quality medals that were awarded to all participants, you see in UMMAA events everyone is a winner. They also got the word out in advertising in an efficient and timely manner, Just ask the nearly 400 spectators whom had attended here, and see what they say!!! Loud cheers of ALLAHU AKBAR (ALLAH (God) IS THE GREATEST) and ALHUMDULLILAH (ALL PRAISE IS DUE TO ALLAH (God)!!!! Please be advised that in keeping with Islamic Practices, all activites were momentarily put on hold, at the times for the two (of the five daily prayers) salats (prayer) had come in, which lasted for about ten or fifteen minutes, and afterwards things continued as though of nothing was interrupted. Plans are under way for this year's December 25th event, stay in tuned with UMMAA's website, and remember ALL are welcomed. Enclosing, let me also emphasis that attending these events are completely and totally FREE, that's right FREE. Last year we had to charge a nominal fee for the competitors in order to defray the cost of the medals. We're working on things right now to remove even that cost, if we have another tournament, remember all expos/exhibitions are WITHOUT any and all COST, just get there. Again, go to the website for updates.

BALTIMORE'S MARTIAL ARTS APPRECIATION DINNER Balto., Md. A few months ago, two very hard worker martial artists who are continuing to bring attention to the indelible contributions to the area's martial arts, Master Lisa Scott (from the Shogun Karate organization) and master Tony Jackson (from The Rielly Hawkins karate association) once again teamed up to stage another very well planned and organized appreciation dinner for 10 martial arts practicioners in the area who have made, and are still making, many strong contributions to the growth and development of the martial arts for many, many of the City's residents. The quaint auditorium of the st. cecelia's church

hall was filled to capacity, just as in the previous appreciation roast/dinners, with a large crowd of about 300 guests. Things got underway after all were and seated and dining of the scrumptious "senior/old school down home cooking" that was very pleasing to all. The M.C. for the evening's gathering was master Thurman Teel from the Shogun Karate Association, who gave a brief overview as to the goals, aims, and objectives for the well deserved presentations that were about to come. But first, a door prize drawing was conducted that set the tone as the beautiful prize given brought a thunderous and loud cheers and applause to this thrilled crowd. Next on the slate was an exciting martial arts demonstration that also brought loud cheers after its conclusion. Next was the presentations the the respective awardees as the M.C. read a brief biography of their many accomplishments revealing and solidifying why they were so deserving of be recognized on this monumental occasion. These awards were broken down in formats of three presentations, followed by another door prize, then the next three followed by another door prize and a 50/50 raffle, concluded by the final four. At its conclusion the onlookers departed giving friendly handshakes, big smiles, and pleasing hugs while exiting Enclosing, please allow this columnist to take this time to sincerely apologizes to a will deserving awardees from the previous occasion whom I by mistake alleviated his name as a well deserving honoree on that occasion, and that well deserving honoree was Grandmaster Gene Stinnette, who was one of the pioneers who first brought martial arts to Baltimore. Again Grandmaster Stinnette, please accept my deepest apology. AWARD HONOREES: Mr. Gerald Harkless (commitment and dedication), Mrs. Harkless receiving, Grandmaster Gail "m's gail" Fernandez (dedication award), Soke Mike Panthers (commitment award), Grm. SHO-KO-JITSU SEMINAR Woodlawn, Md. Prof. Chris Miller held an eye opening seminar for 24 enthusiastic martial artists from various disciplines in the

finite points of effective "street combat" techniques. Grm. Yusuf Parker allowed his school's padded training to serve as the venue for this revealing experience. Many martial

artists should go on a personal search to make sure that in their respective styles, there is sound knowledge and UNDERSTANDING of how to effectively apply in a combat situation the forms and techniques that they have learned in class. Going up and down the floor just has no merit, if one can not apply what was learned in class. Well, Prof. Miller wanted to open the participants eyes and mines in looking beyond "what is just placed right in front of you", but also other avenues for better and proper understanding. On this initial gathering, only male adults came open to participate in this funfilled seminar. I say funfilled because Prof. Miller makes serious learning of things by using "fun methods" making the learning experience much, much easier, and thus the participants can grasp a lot faster what is being conveyed by the instructor. At the conclusion of this learning session, each participant was

give a certificate of participation for all of their hard work and enjoyment. We here at ACTION encourage all martial artists to reexplore the concept of your training to make sure what you are doing is EFFECTIVE, if and when necessary.

MARYLAND SUPER SHOWDOWN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS Balto., Md. The College of Notre Dame again served as the venue for this annual event here in "CHARM CITY". Confinded only to youth competitors. Masters Curtis Quick and Carl Matthews wants to highlight what our youth can and will accomplish, if given the correct guidance and directions-and in the forefront of it all, is proper etiquette and manners. Coming from numerous places along the "Delmarva" penninsula (Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) excited and determined youths, approximately 275, came out to do their best for top honors and recognition on this sunny spring day, and also to show they can do if given the opportunity and chance, and they did just that!! To see the determination and expression on their faces and performances, it gave some assuring promises for the future in the minds of the nearly 400 spectators whom were in attendance. This exciting event saw youth competitors do their best in Weapons, Forms (individual and team), Sparring, Basic Techniques, Self defense, and Padded Weapons, before all whom had gathered here. Numerous qualified area judges were on hand to help the expeditious flow of each and every division, and mainly enforcing SAFETY. The quality and beautiful trophies that were awared at the conclusion of each and every division, brought warm smiles and very loud cheers from all whom were in this beautiful campus gymnasium. After the dust had settled, now was the time to witness the best of the best, as the divisional winners competed for the grandchampionship honors in the following categories: Beginner forms, Intermediate forms, Advanced forms, Black Belt forms, 12 and under weapons, 13-17 weapons, and last, and certainly not least Black Belt weapons. After the conclusion of the Grandchampions, every began to file out of the venue, but before having individual and school photo opts, and heartwarming encourgements given by the many school Instructors whom had brought their students to participate.

"Dr. Bob" the founder and chairman of the International Sports Hall of Fame and if you recall, last year he presented Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, Sat. March 5th, 2011. For the first time 5 great athletes were inducted the Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Dr Goldman stated part of picking for the International Sports Hall of Fame is picking people who are not only legends in their particular sport but also great people who have given back to society. Arnold became Governor, a

stressful job, as a way to give back to society and showing he's grateful to be a part of this country. I served on the council of the President's Council of Physical Fitness for Arnold and he's the perfect example of why I wanted to create this Sports Hall of Fame. I want to completely fund this myself. We're not going to hold fundraisers or dinners or take contributions. We're not going to take a penny from anyone, nor do we want to or will we (accept contributions). This way, all the politics that's around most of these Hall of Fames can be eliminated. We don't need anything from anyone to continue to grow it because i'll just do it.

Rest In Peace SHIDOSHI ROGER CLARK Master FAROUK GIBBS The Loss of one of New Yorks Finest and a Great man As a Grandmaster in the field of Martial Arts, Roger Clark Sr.’s career spans over forty years of training. Growing up in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, NY, the stomping grounds for notorious gangs such as Pure Hell, Jolly Stompers, Tomahawks, etc…, it was quite inevitable for a young child to have great interest in knowing how to fight. Soon, Roger’s attention would be captured by the television series Mannix – starring Mike Connors. The series depicted a karate chopping, Judo throwing, private eye. He mirrored himself after a young Afro-American actor who was also featured in the television show for they were of equal age. Watching the young actor actively partake in karate lessons became cathartic for Roger. It sparked an unbelievable interest within. With the help of his older brother, he began to imitate and practice these moves. With much emulation after his now favorite young actor, Roger moved to the Flatbush area of Brooklyn where he began training formally under the tutelage of Pierre T Rene, Sensei, Founder of The Chinese Sho-To-Kan System whom he credits greatly , Roger Clark, Sensei, opened his first Dojo in 1982. With the faith of an optimist, he taught in hallways, backyards, basements, parks and even on rooftops. It never mattered where he taught. What mattered most was that he was doing it. Of the Privileged, Grandmaster Roger Clark, Sr. has been inducted into the United States professional Karate HDQTs Hall of Fame with the likes of Kushinda Lamar Thornton, Ronmaster Breaker – JETER Prof. Byron SUPER B Miller, and Tommy Chen. Furthermore, The Central Florida Hall of Fame, as well as the Action Martial Arts magazine honored and awarded Roger with notables such as Abdul Aziz, Steve Beal, and Joseph (the Pit Bull) Collins. He appeared on cable television’s first karate program known as the Martial Arts Forum – Ch. J which was produced by John Burke. He was also seen on cable’s ON THE MATT, Ch. 68 with producer Ron Howard. Among the many accomplishments of Roger Clark, the finding of The Martial Arts Fight Drug & Alcohol program in 2007 was a major pivotal point in his life. By the year 2009, he’d join forces with his friend and partner – Shihan Jackie Drayton, to form what is now known as the GREATER ALLIANCE OF MARTIAL ARTS UNION. Together, they promote martial arts in numerous ways: NEW YORK CITY ANNUAL KUMITE CLASSIC TOURNAMENT – MARTIAL ARTS FIGHT Please visit Chinese Shotokan world on Facebook or www.chineseshotokanworld.weebly.com

Sifu Abdulmuhsiy Abdurrahman crowd whom had gathered here on this warm spring/summery day. The competition in this multi discipline tournament brought determined and strong performances in all age levels and sash/belt ranking on this

Recently here at the woodlawn senior center, we the students of Action hall of honor inducteed, Sifu Gamel Spencer had once again the pleasure of attending another fabulous seminar given by Grandmaster William Cheung. what was suppose to be a two day event inside of their gymnasium, to our delight the first day's sessison was held outside on this beautiful spring day. Wing Chun is better trained outside, around nature, and with the grounds being unknown it shows how important knowing and understanding correct footwork is to the art. The seminar not only had the grandmaster of traditional Wing Chun on hand, but also a few of the other well known instructors in attendance, eager to lend a teaching and helping hand to others on the art they enjoy most. The second day we spent our time in the gymnasium. However to our surprise and delight, instead of doing just doing basic techniques, we were given the eye opening involvement of effective and actual class’s combative drills. Needless to say, this practice helped to bring in more clarification on what the techniques are actually used for, and not just movements!! Sigung Had us all line up in Shaolin Lines to go through repetitions of the Entry Technique, this was most enjoyed because it was more than a basic overview, but we were actually TRAINING with meaning and purpose. To end what was an enticing, and invigorating experience, not only was credit given to Sifu Spencer for setting up the weekend, but he was also given a beautiful banner from Grandmaster Cheung, as a sign of appreciation for maintaining the teaching traditions as a direct descendant of the art. This sign of gratitude from the Grandmaster, brought loud cheers and wide smiles by all whom had gathered on this educational and fun filled day. Please allow us here at ACTION MAGAZINE, thank Matt Deba for submitting this article, and doing such an outstanding job.

RISING GREEN DRAGON CMA AND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS Tannersville, Pa. Just as last year, Master Ruben Torres and Kathi Tasetano (World Karate Union) collectively stagged another well run and also well attended martial arts championships, however, this year it was not only for Chinese martial artists but for all different stylists of martial arts also. A portion of the award's expenses was so kindly sponsored by Disney XD ,who promoted their latest television series "Kickin it" at their "Bobby Wasibi's" martial arts academy booth. They featured a high kicking contest with many free give aways to the contesting youths on hand which brought wide an bright smiles to their and everyone's faces as well. The opening ceremony featured Master Mel Roberts's Buck County Lion Dance Team. The actual demonstration was given by a Southern Praying Mantis team with Sifu James Cama and students, which brought loud cheers and thunderous applause from the "standing room only"

highly contested day topping things off with the beautiful awards given for all of their hard work and diligence. We here a "ACTION" congratulate all who had come out, competitors and spectators from all walks of life, in order to promote goodwill and harmony, to all of humanity.

2012 U.S. KUO SHU CHAMPIONSHIPs Hunt Valley, Md. On this slightly overcast summer day, the members, volunteers, and associates came together again to host their 24th national and international championships to the delight of the overall 350 competitors and 525 spectators. Although the attendance was slightly down from last year, this extremely well put together event still had all the excitement and precision just as the 23 years prior. Grandmaster Chien liang Huang and all of his helpers and assistants, don't believe in waitiing until the last minute to start organnizing and putting this monumental championship together, they start about 8 to 9 months prior for the next Kuo Shu Championships, and believe me it really "SHOWS" in the final analysis. From the multidivisions for competion, to the master and grandmaster seminars and demonstrations, to the well printed out agenda of events, the collectors item volume of the program, to the extremely beautiful high quality medals give out after competition, these only a FEW of the things that makes this long running spectacular event a continous very hugh success, to say the least. Enclosing, I shall like to point out that many governmental officials, national and local, traditionally sends their representatives on their behalf to send greetings and best wishes on this highly competitive and friendly event. Some sending representatives are, President Obama, U.S. Senator Mulkulski, U.S. Congressman Cardin, U.S. Embassy personnel, and last but certainly not least, the Baltimore County Executive's representative as well. This columnist has had the honor and priviledge of attending and participating as a competitor, and now an internal arts judge

for all of these 24 years as well, and believe me when I say it has been a "BALL" for all of those years and hope to attend many more in years to come. Consider attending this funfilled affair which is held on the last weekend of July of each year and see for yourself, I'm very sure you'll feel the pagentry and excitement in your own way as well.

2012 WONG PEOPLE'S TOURNAMENT Washington, D.C. Once again here in the nation's capital, Sifu Raymond Wong and his lovely supporting wife, students and associates, hosted a marvelous all Chinese martial arts tournament to the delight of over 250 competitors and 375

spectators from all walks of life to witness and be apart of this well run annual funfilled event. Although the attendance was slightly down from last year's gathering, this columnist could hardly tell because of the smiles and loud cheers broadcasted by all!!!!! Triunity University once again served as the host venue for this annual crowd pleasing event, with people traveling up and down the eastern seaboard of the U.S., and several others from different parts of the country as well. Many styles of the Chinese martial arts saw competitors from many diverse age groups and skill levels compete for the beautiful (Yin/Yang) medals given out at this year's special event to the delight of all. In keeping with traditions of the past tournaments, things got underway with the fabulous lion dance, given by the Wong people, which is symbolic of warding off evil spirits before things got underway. The competition in all categories and very hard challenged in every age group and skill levels to say the least. But after the dust had settled, four grandchampions in the forms, weapons, sparring, and self defense sets, walked away with top honors and a cash reward to recognize their hard work, and for an outstanding job. In closing, just as in previous years, The Wong People had each and every participating SCHOOL come forth to be recognized, because Sifu Wong believes that it is through the schools participation that makes such events as these such a resounding success to say the least!!!!!!!!!

BALTIMORE'S GIFT OF TAI CHI/KUNG FU TOURNAMENT Parkville, Md.

On this sun shinnny spring morning, promoters sifu Shawn Smith and sifu Tom Brocht held their annual all chinese martial arts tournament here at a new venue, the classy Tall Cedars Hall. This annual, event originally starting out about 5 years ago, focusing on the world wide "Tai Chi day" in hopes of showing the public at large, the beauty and many, many, benefits one can receive in doing this calming and beautiful Chinese martial art. This columnist can attest to the countless health benefits one can receive after being a student of the traditional Yang style of the last 31 years. In the last 3 to 4 years much published reports and studies from people varying all walks of life, has clearly shown the benefits anyone can receive in doing this peaceful, mind calming and effortless flowing exercise known to mankind, that can not be surpassed by any other form of exercise known to all of humanity including, YOGA!!! I say this without hesitation because, traditionally when we think of "exercise" we think of, no matter how minimal, exerting or giving off energy in some kind of way, Tai Chi Chuan (especially the Yang style) however emphasizes RECEIVING energy in the mind and body, instead of expelling it from the body-do your research and independent studies, because it is out there for you. With all of this said and done, to my dismay the turnout for this inspirational event was not at all well attended. Approximately 2 dozen competitors, and maybe 30 spectators sparsely attended this event which was over completely in about a hour to a hour and a half maximum!!! According to co-promoter Sifu Shawn Smith "we contacted several schools and their instructors getting commitments of their participation and presence, but they didn't show!! Needless to say, this was quite disheartening to say the least for all involved including the many judges, referees, and support personnel on hand to be of service. Enclosing I would sadly say, this very well could be their last and final event. Enclosing, please allow me to say that I have my own viewpoints as to how things didn't turn out as anticipated, but that's "water under the bridge" at this point, and I'll keep my assessments to myself.

before 6 pm, because the Beast comes out at six.” He was referring to Soke McBride and his method of training. After approximately two years, he went to Brooklyn, where he began studying Jiu-Jitsu under the Legendary Dr. Moses Powell. Over the years, he was elevated to a Professorship in Sanuces, the art that Moses th taught. Nate became Moses’ first 9 degree Grandmaster and continued to train with him until the Doctor’s untimely death. As a teacher of both Karate and Jiu-jitsu, Nate has raised a number of champions to include: Derrick Williams, Sherman Bunch, James Weldon, Chang Vega,

If you found yourself walking the streets of the Bronx, New York, you might pass this unassuming man. Standing all of 5 feet 5 inches weighing in at 118 pound s; He has trained in the martial arts along side some of New York’s top martial artist. Some of his dojo mates included: Little John Davis, Errol Bennett, and Phillip and Michael McRae. He is no other that the quiet, humble Soke Nate McBride. As a child, Nate was considered a kid with a bad attitude. Maybe it was because of his size, but shortly after becoming a teen, his life changed. Nate began training as a boxer at the youthful age of 14. Always the athlete, Soke, competed in most of your school sports; football, track and field and of course the martial arts. In the early sixties, upon returning home from a stint in the United States Army, he teamed up with Grandmaster, Soke Reno Morales at the Bronx Shotokan Club. The club was located rd at 3198 3 Ave. Bronx, N.Y. and was run by Soke Morales and Grandmaster Remy Hannibal. The art was Shotokan Karate. Nate was a fast learner and the training was grueling but was nothing compared to what Soke had to endure as a former Master Air Borne Paratrooper, jumping in Viet Nam. Soke Reno says that as a teacher, Nate was a very demanding instructor, Reno would had a saying, “if you didn’t want to train hard, you’d better be off the floor

Sayfullaah AlAmriykiy, Aziz, Kim, Monique, Yolanda, Teresa and Diamond. He opened his first school with a close friend Mr. Yates. One must wonder how he finds the time to accomplish what he has. He retired as an instructor from New York City Transit Authority with 28 years and from the New York Army National Guard after 24 years. Nate managed to graduate from Charles Memorial Bible College and air condition and refrigeration school. Soke McBride has also added Oikiro Ryu AikiJiujitsu and Hakko-Ryu Jujitsu to his repertoire, earning th 8 degrees in both. After making some improvements to what he had learned, he created McBrides Kyo-Jutsu Karate. Professor Sayfullaah Al-Amriykiy was named his heir. Some of his contemporaries were Fred Hamilton, George Cofield, Bill & Joe Richardson, and Kareem Allah. So if you’re ever in the Bronx, don’t be surprised if the person that comes to your aide is no other then The Quiet Warrior, 74 year old, Soke Nate McBride.

“TURNING 60 IN MARTIAL ARTS” The baby boomers are coming of age, turning 60 is no longer considered old age. Our concept of someone turning 60 is just a sexagenarian all crippled over and possibility starting early retirement. When we think of someone turning 60, we conjure up old images of a person with grey hair maybe playing shuffle board, or fishing in an old pond. There are many old images we can conjure up in our minds. That was then and this is now, 2012. As we look into our dojo’s, and schools of martial arts training, we find the majority of the master instructors are just hitting that new magic age of 60. As we further examine this new awareness of who is teaching the classes, we find that the master instructor is on the floor teaching and applying their skills to all of the students. One of the most remarkable visuals is that the master instructor is out working the younger students. The students for the most part are an average age 17 and the master instructor at least 60. We now question the physical desire of the student or maybe we should take a second look at the physical endurance of the master instructor. Where is all this energy being displayed by the master instructor coming from and why? Healthy habits can create healthy lifestyles, that being said, from the beginning of time, students have been taught to eat healthy, students have been taught to do all things in moderation. The student has been taught to not drink, not smoke and of course no drugs. The students that were able to embrace these tenets of good training are now reaping the benefits of not only a high level of proficiency but also a high level of physical expertise. Additionally you will not see the physical wear of time on the body of master instructor. Most master instructors at the tender age of 60 look like they are in their 40’s sometimes even younger. Let me share a little story about me, because I too have crossed that magic threshold of turning 60. When I was in my twenties I always wanted to do 1000 push-ups per day. I am free to tell you I was only able to reach about 300 pushups a day. That was forty years ago. I can share with now that in this year 2012, I have elevated my game and now I’m doing 6 sets of 200 push-ups on the push-up bar, for the math challenged individuals, that’s 1200 push-ups per day, every other day. This surprises me as much as it might surprise you. I can tell you this, my entire life has been a life of constant working out through martial arts as well as track and field, that’s the physical outlook. As for the spiritual reason to workout at such a high level, has yet to be revealed to me. As a master instructor, I have come to see and experience a new phenomenon within the martial arts industry. I did once witness Dr. Moses Powell visit one of the schools that was teaching his system of martial arts. The purpose was to collect whatever remuneration he felt was due him. I did also observe that, several of his black belts traveled with him. I too thought there was a sense of entitlement owed to master instructors. If one of your Black Belt students opens a school their school should be in compliance with a 10%

kickback to the system founder or master instructor. I have had several of my Black Belt students open their own schools and haven’t kicked back nothing to me. I can be brutally honest with you, it hurt me but I never approach the student to share my discontentment. The only reason I didn’t approach the student to reprimand and get what I thought was fair. As the truth be told I was not taught to give back 10%, if I opened my own school nor did I teach my students to give 10% back to the founder or master instructor. Dr. Moses Powell was much more forward and powerful then me, so he did approach his Black Belt school owners and received whatever he thought to be fair. I say this to you who want to receive or feel you deserve to receive from your Black Belt school owners, START TEACHING YOUR WHITE BELTS TO GIVE 10% TO THE FOUNDER OR MASTER INSTRUCTOR , then you have a right and reason to receive. Here’s the principal, “THE DEPTH OF YOUR LOVE, IS EXPRESSED BY THE DEGREE OF YOUR GIVING”.
