AFD is now providing a private ear wax removal service from its bases in Haywards Heath and Worthing. The service is delivered by a specially trained audiologist who uses microsuction to clear the ear canal of wax. Microsuction is a safe and comfortable way of removing ear wax.

The service is available to anyone over the age of 18. For further information or to book an appointment please contact us.

It has developed from a small charitable organisation based in Elizabeth House Haywards Heath in 1994 to a qualified provider of NHS Audiology services delivered from 12 bases in Sussex. Action for Deafness is a charitable organisation that relies on voluntary income.

Donations help it to maintain many of the services that it provides including the Resource Centres, the Hearing Aid Maintenance Clinics, the social clubs, the transport service, lip reading classes and many more. Between July 2017 and June 2018 Action for Deafness saw an average of 78 patients each day in its Resource Centres and provided NHS audiology services to 5882 patients.

News Deaf Awareness Training filming at Gatwick Airport Cathy Cobbold, Training Co-ordinator, was asked to film a Deaf Awareness section for Gatwick Airport’s induction training video which all their staff must view as part of their mandatory induction training.

Here is Cathy’s account of the experience.

Filming took place in North Terminal over several days.

The video was shot from three different perspectives to see how each person in the interaction views the situation. First the camera filmed me as I walked through the airport, then it filmed the people I interacted with. For those two shots the delegates will hear all sounds as recorded. The third perspective is the viewer seeing through my eyes and hearing through my ears. Here delegates will experience muffled and distorted sound giving them an idea of how differently ordinary situations are experienced for people with hearing loss.

The scenario that was filmed involved me walking out of the lift upon arriving at the airport, heading towards the check-in hall to be intercepted by a lady from Customer Support who noticed I was looking confused. She escorts me to the Special Assistance Help Desk to get a ‘hidden disabilities’ lanyard to wear. I am then assisted as I go through the check-in procedures and security.

In order to be filmed from my own perspective, I had to wear a rather large helmet which was hot and stuffy and heavy too. Security staff were quite alarmed at first, as you are not allowed to wear crash helmets in the airport. Another difficulty of filming was ensuring continuity between the different shots. It wasn’t always easy to remember precisely how I had walked, if I held my handbag in my right or left hand, what I looked at as I went past.

A ‘Top Tips’ segment was also filmed to provide Gatwick Airport staff with ways to improve their deaf awareness. Tips such as: Get the passenger’s attention before you begin to speak, make and maintain eye contact and speak clearly and not too quickly. We filmed examples of bad situations where security staff had no deaf awareness and then repeated the scenario where the tips were applied.

Overall it was a great opportunity to produce a Deaf Awareness section that will help the staff at Gatwick Airport understand how to communicate with people who have a hearing loss.

Amjad visits Deaf School in Myanmar Amjad Awawdeh, AFD’s MSc. student audiologist visited Mandaly School for the Deaf Charity in Myanmar in November 2018.

The school was founded in the early 1960s

by Sandy Blakeway Smith, a British teacher for Deaf children who moved to Myanmar with her husband. The school expanded over the years and in 2015 established a formal partnership between teachers

and doctors in both Myanmar and the UK to raise the standard of healthcare and education of deaf children in Myanmar.

A team of ENT doctors, audiologists and professionals in Education of the Deaf from the UK visit the school once a year to provide training for the staff and audiological care for the students. This year, Amjad was in the team which stayed at the school for 10 days.

AFD Services Update AFD’s Worthing Coffee Morning celebrated its 4th anniversary on Tuesday 5 February.

Everyone there enjoyed some cake with their coffee. The Friday Club will be celebrating its first anniversary on 5th April. Feel free to come along. The weekly Coffee Mornings and the Friday Club are greatly enjoyed by all who attend and everyone is welcome to join in. More details on these clubs are on page 11.

Henfield Update AFD’s Henfield service is now based at Henfield Medical Centre. A Hearing Aid Maintenance Clinic is also available every Tuesday, 9:30am – 12:30pm.

Crawley Hearing Clinic

East Grinstead

AFD’s Crawley Hearing Aid Maintenance Clinic now operates on the last Tuesday of each month at Gossops Green Medical: 9:30am – 12:30pm. No appointments are necessary; just drop in for batteries, re-tubing of hearing aids, advice and support. For more information on all the maintenance clinics, please turn to page 12.

Due to renovation work at the Glen Vue Centre, AFD’s service will be closed from 19th April to 6th May, inclusively. A full service will resume on Tuesday 7th May. Batteries can be obtained by post or at any of the other Resource Centres or Maintenance Clinics.

The team also produced a “Deaf education and hearing rehabilitation workshop” for the school which provided further assistance.

The work has been supported by the Hear the World Foundation.

Amjad said: “This trip was eye-opening and heart warming. I had to to become more resourceful and improvise to get the job done as there were limited supplies. I also realised how much satisfaction there can be in improving other people’s lives.”

A new emergency service app: TapSOS TapSOS is a smartphone app to connect people with 999. We all know it is possible to call, and perhaps you also know you can text 999 through the current eSMS service. However, this app is designed in a visual manner to help you to easily contact any of the four emergency services: Police, Fire, Ambulance or Coastguard.

There are many reasons why someone may not be able to vocally reach out for help by calling or be unable to text, so TapSOS was created to overcome these barriers.

TapSOS will be available for anyone to use, however, the focus is to improve the experience of those who are deaf, those living with speech impediments, asthma suffers or those who suffer with allergic reactions.

If English isn’t your first language, TapSOS being picture based, will be an easier and more suitable method of reaching out for help.

How does it work?

Once downloaded, you create a personal profile – this information will help responders and Emergency staff to understand what help is best suited to you. The app will guide you through a number of questions to identify where you are, what is your emergency and how the emergency services can help you best.

TapSOS is connected directly with the UK 999 infrastructure, and any alerts made through the app will be handled in the same manner as any other 999 call or eSMS. Final testing was completed in February with over 100 Deaf and Hard of Hearing users. TapSOS is available to download for free for iOS users from the App Store or Android users on Google Play.
