ACROSS THE LENS: STORIES OF YOU AND ME IN 2020

It

is a project to highlight real life stories happening during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Greater Toronto Area Chinese community, from the perspective and interpretation of our youth.

During the process our young members contacted and interviewed a number of ‘unsung heroes’, individuals who had been hit hard by the many challenges and adversity brought by the pandemic, but ultimately emerged stronger with admirable perseverance and resilience.

While our young people listened, recorded and organized the heroes’ sharing, they felt deeply inspired and encouraged by these interviewees’ positivity and vigor towards life, and their horizons were broadened from this experience. Likewise, the interviewees shared that they learned more about youth’s perspective about the world and experienced the love and care they have for their community.

When we ideated producing this special publication, it was not only necessary to bring to light some moving stories of courage and resilience in this unprecedented difficult time, but also create a platform to enable young people to learn more about the community, to reflect on how their elders handle adversity, their attitude and endurance. Accompanied and led by an instructor, our youth have acquired essential interview skills of listening carefully, asking questions rationally, and writing reports succinctly.

Producing a publication with a group of young people from different social classes and cultural backgrounds, who speak different languages and write in different scripts, was a difficult task, but proved fulfilling. In fact, the real challenge came from the social distancing rules introduced to fight pandemic. Under the rules, face-to-face activities are limited; group training, planning, interviews, and actual production were full of obstacles. Fortunately, the group of young people we have are curious and eager to explore new things. It is their enthusiasm that propelled us to put the whole project into fruition and have the touching stories of the COVID-19 compiled into a book and presented to the public.

was a year when everything was upended globally. No doubt, widespread COVID-19 outbreaks, along with extensive and prolonged lockdowns, have affected people of all ages and from all walks of life physically, psychologically and economically.

As Chinese Canadian, I have always been curious about the impact of the pandemic on our immigrant community.

The Chinese community was the earliest hit, facing a spike in racist sentiments from being called names to being physically assaulted. Chinese businesses also took a hit with these harmful anti-Chinese sentiments leading to stigmas that hurt our restaurants and stores.

Though individually we couldn’t do much to alleviate these situations that were popping up across Canada, my husband and I continued to dine out where possible or order takeout to offer these local businesses some financial and more importantly our moral support.

Through casual conversations with some shop and restaurant owners as well as their workers, I discerned some silver linings in their struggles. Their perseverance, resilience and resourcefulness amid the difficulties were 5

admirable; but more importantly, I was impressed by how owners and staff became closer during these challenging times with a common goal and a strong collective spirit to weather through together as a family. I was touched by the care and sacrifices both sides were willing to give to each other in order to keep their business afloat as best as they could. All these reminded me of the many longstanding cultural attributes that I acquired when I was young before my emigration - 人情味, 一家人, 咬實牙根, 齊心協力, 守 望相助, 同舟共濟精神 . While these individuals endured their hardships quietly, selflessly contributing to raise the communal and collective spirit, I had a wish that these seldom heard but inspiring stories would be more widely shared, especially for our second-generation immigrant youth to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the resilience and spirits our first-generation immigrants brought with them.

Coincidentally, Nicole Wong, Executive Director of Across U-hub, was contemplating an e-book project as another way to meaningfully engage her youth members during lockdowns. Our ideas converged and eventually materialized into a full-fledged production of interviewing and writing stories of unsung heroes and ordinary people in our Chinese Canadian community during COVID-19. It should be noted that Across the Lens: Stories of You and Me in 2020 is more than a publication; it’s also a project with multiple purposes.

First of all, through this type of publication, we hope to help unearth more untold but touching and inspirational stories of many first-generation immigrants who have sacrificed and contributed to the community, but often with little recognition and acknowledgement. Moreover, through projects like these, hopefully more positive energy can be instilled in the community, especially during these challenging times, to help keep each other’s spirits up (加油).

Second, this publication was also developed for and by our young people. Using this project as a platform, Across U-hub invited a group of interested youth, trained and empowered them to interview and write about these resilient people in our community. I was honoured to be part of the coaching team. Not only did I see how these young volunteers honed their interviewing or writing techniques, but more importantly through the process I could also observe how they acquired interpersonal and empathetic skills to connect and resonate with the people they talked with and wrote about in the immigrant 7

community. As well, through their narration, we hope more young people can relate to these stories, and at the same time open their eyes to the hardships and resiliency some of their older generations have been going through in this trying time. After all, this helps promote a crossgenerational understanding and appreciation, which has always been an ongoing goal of Across U-hub.

This e-book series contains six stories about several Chinese Canadians from various sectors, including local businesses, hospitality, a nursing home, and youth work.

Although each narrative is unique, there are at least two common threads.

• While the struggles of different characters are portrayed in this book, it’s not so much about ways they dealt with 8

their difficulties; rather, the focus is on relationships as to how they still cared for the well-being of the people around them, including employees, co-workers, friends and family members, while braving the storm together.

• It should also be emphasized that the narration was done through the lens of young people, along with their reflections as to how each story character had inspired them in relation to their own lives. In other words, the perspectives of our young people are also reflected in the writing.

I hope you enjoy these stories and find them encouraging and inspiring. May the caring, communal and collective spirits emerged throughout this book be sustained and valued even after the pandemic for the better future of everyone.

TECHNOLOGY AND PANDEMIC COMBINED TO FORCE SOCIETAL CHANGE : Dr. Gordon Lee & Wilfred W. Fong*

was a year of disruptive change for most of us. Due to the pandemic, many people were forced to alter their plans for business, studies, travel and just about all aspects of their personal lives. Government imposed lockdown restrictions, changes to work initiated by employers, schooling switched from classroom to online, self-initiated restrictions for health and safety reasons were all factors which affected the routine of daily life. Technology not only become an integral part of our life, it may have also fundamentally transformed work from home options, grocery and shopping habits, and how we interact within our social networks.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA1), average Canadians start their daily routine by turning the alarm off on their voice-activated devices. Smartphones are now owned by at least 25% of Canadians as compared with only 19% in 2019. Getting traffic updates from a radio station, watching the morning news or listening to their favourite music is often streamed through the devices instead of over the air reception.

Smart devices such as coffee makers will then proceed to brew, or even ground, fresh cups of coffee followed by a command from a smartphone.

Although work from home was generally considered an optional work arrangement before the pandemic, it has become the new normal. Industries and companies that had been previously reluctant to adopt this model of work found themselves with no option but to accept and embrace the telework arrangement. Interestingly, many reports found that workers seemed to be more productive working from home and felt better with balancing their work-family life. With schools also adopting an e-learning model, the demand of home high speed bandwidth has grown significantly in most households. Internet outages from providers are no longer minor inconveniences; connectivity problems result in major customer impact, affecting important conference calls, school assignments and quizzes.

Government restrictions on restaurants, forced closures or severely limiting their operations, took away a very popular dining option for many. The prospect of joining long lines at grocery stores and fear of catching the COVID virus discouraged many people from venturing out. As a result, there has been a huge increase of online food and groceries ordering. Mail and delivery services have also reported significant growth in parcel deliveries.

This trend, however, has also come with its share of problems. The delivery industry has been forced to hire more drivers, many of whom are doing this for the first time, or on a part time basis. The number of food, 12

groceries, or packages delivered to the wrong address is an ever increasing problem. Additionally, porch pirates have also taken the opportunity to grab unattended packages before the homeowner. Smart doorbells and security cameras can often catch the thief in the action, but unfortunately, there is often insufficient resolution to identify the porch pirate.

In the evening, it is estimated that 53% of Canadians will turn to subscriber based online providers such as Netflix for entertainment. Two in three Canadians will watch at least one hour per day of TV or movies online.

How we watch TV is also changing. Fewer people are watching broadcast programming over cable. Networks are putting content on their website and customers can stream it to their home at the most convenient time.

More people are consuming content over their mobile devices, and if they choose to watch on a big screen, it is often through a streaming app on the smart TV. The forced closure of theatres, concerts, sporting events, and other venues where many people gather has resulted in a boom in streaming technology for entertainment. For example, Netflix has almost doubled its subscription base in 2020. The “stay at home” orders and border closings have resulted in more people staying within their homes.

There is a booming home renovation business with families spending their vacation budgets on home improvements such as decks and home theatres. Additionally, there have been reports of huge sales in gaming consoles as people look for ways to stay entertained at home.

Over 55% will use Facebook to catch up with news, connections, etc. as it is still considered the most popular social media platforms used in Canada, followed by Twitter, Instagram, etc. Whatsapp, WeChat, and other SMS channels have unexpectedly become primary source of news for many of its users. In the frenzy to be first to get COVID rumours into their social circle, speed has trumped accuracy and these different SMS channels have become the biggest source of COVID misinformation in society.

Education has experienced the biggest challenges during this time. Although technology and online education has been in place at many academic institutions for many years, online learning has always been considered the “little sibling” to face-to-face teaching. This past year has seen the implementation of online classes scaled up to tremendous volumes within a very short period of time. Schools have also been forced to put traditionally classroom teachers into new roles as online teachers.

For the school-aged children, the challenge has been the inconsistent approach of school districts. The regions are faced with wide ranging levels of technical expertise as well as differing capability of hardware, software and infrastructure. Additionally, there is the challenge of late notification with regards to the closing and re-opening of schools to protect the safety and health of the students and teachers/staff. Recently, the Ontario government has already issued a statement to forewarn schools and parents that closure of schools is expected to be extended for at least the early part of 2021. The greatest 14

unknown is the inability to accurately forecast the levels of infection, even a few days in advance.

Many universities/colleges are facing similar challenges.

Theory and lecture portions are easily converted to online education but hands on experience such as lab exercises are a challenge to replicate virtually. Exploratory ventures into emerging technologies such as virtual reality have been attempted in some science labs. However, the long term retention of knowledge learnt from this type of new technology is an area for further research.

Interestingly, many academic institutions have observed that the conversion to online classes have resulted in significant savings in overall maintenance costs. Less garbage needs to be collected and classrooms cleaning schedules can be reduced.

No matter what levels of education, the most significant impact has been on the students. Online learning requires a higher level of self-motivation and more discipline in managing time. Students must take the initiative and responsibility for their own learning. At the same time, reduced “human” interactions have been replaced by virtual meetings and online discussions.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle facing students in an online learning environment is holding their attention span. Young people are accustomed to highly stimulating and fast paced content. Unfortunately, the online learning offered by most academic institutions is relatively simple and pedestrian.

Online learning has not been an easy move for educators as well. Building material for an online course is completely different than for a face-to-face classroom. Delivering an online course is vastly different than entering a physical classroom to teach. Many older teachers are not as techsavvy as their younger students. Prerecording video lectures require the same set of skills as taking interesting selfies, with knowledge of lighting, background, and body posture.

Delivering an interactive session requires a comfort level with monitoring the chat screen, turning on and off microphones, and being able to simultaneously read the body language of many students through the computer screen.

It is also evident that during this time, online ordering has increased dramatically. Many stores have moved to expand their businesses online. This has resulted in changing the shopping behaviour of many people. With current lockdown restrictions, stores cannot be open for customer shopping. Guests must browse, select, and order online, only coming to the store for curbside pickup.

As a result, it is essential for the company website to be intuitive, creative and mobile phone friendly. This has led to an increase in the overall demand of IT programming and development jobs.

Food For Thought – A Conclusion

There are many more impacted areas that we could have included in this article. It is the purpose of the authors to start a discussion. As we reflect on the impact of IT on our daily life during the pandemic, an important question is whether technology is enhancing our lives, or is it replacing essential parts of our humanity?

We are inherently a species that relies on social interaction. Our social responsibility is to remain within our tiny bubble of those who live in the same household.

Many online meeting platforms, such as Zoom, WebEx, etc., are filling our need for socialization. What happens after the pandemic is under control? Will these online platforms replace our weekly coffee gathering with friends? Are the changes brought about by the pandemic permanent or temporary? Have we lost a bit of our humanity, or has it been enhanced by the technology?

Have we become hooked or addicted to our devices?

Can we live without them? Where are the emerging job opportunities in this new economy? How is learning, skills development, and networking affected?

The answers will be found with a deep and thoughtful reflection and not from a Google search. *Dr. Gordon Lee is the former Chief Knowledge Officer with the IBM Canada and a visiting instructor with the Seneca College IT Security program. 形 象 從 小 深 入 我 心。今 天 訪 問 的 嘉 賓 C a n s o n 也 是

餐 廳 老 闆，讓 我 有 機 會 換 一 個 角 度 觀 察，看 見 老 闆 也 有 隨 和 且 親 切 的 一 面。

C a n s o n 當 年 1 5 歲，以 留 學 生 身 份 從 香 港 來 到 加 拿 大，

不 久 之 後，他 的 家 人 突 然 陷 入 財 務 困 難，幸 得 同 鄉 的 一 個

家 庭 的 幫 助，僱 用 他 在 餐 館 工 作，才 可 以 維 持 生 計，半 工

半 讀。誰 知 這 份 工 作 奠 定 了 他 日 後 在 餐 飲 業 的 發 展 基 礎， 他 現 在 是 市 中 心 一 間 高 級 中 餐 館 的 老 闆。

新 冠 肺 炎 迅 速 爆 發，沒 有 人 作 好 準 備，特 別 在 心 理 上。

影 響 兩 三 個 月。當 第 一 次 封 城， C a n s o n 感 覺 自 己 走 進 了

一 條 暗 黑 的 隧 道，但 隱 約 看 到 隧 道 盡 頭 的 一 點 光。沒 想 到 這 點 光 還 未 發 亮，第 二 次 封 城 的 警 號 已 經 響 起，這 條 漆 黑 的 隧 道 似 乎 無 限 延 伸，看 不 見 半 點 光，C a n s o n 的 擔 憂 也

越 來 越 大。 C a n s o n 陸 續 聽 到 同 行 結 業 的 消 息，最 近，他 認

識 一 間 經 營 了 近 4 0 年 的 泰 國 餐 廳 也 決 定 停 業，令 他 非 常

唏 噓，疫 情 持 續 下 去，不 知 還 有 多 少 同 行 可 以 撐 得 住。 19

疫 情 使 C a n s o n 失 去 很 多 生 意，我 問： 「有沒有考慮過暫

時 停 業，待 疫 情 過 後 才 東 山 復 出？」我 以 為 他 會 不 捨 得 自

己 的 心 血，又 或 者 考 慮 經 濟 上 的 虧 損，誰 知 他 說： 「在商言 商，暫 停 營 業 是 最 容 易 的，但 我 回 想 起 當 年 自 己 遇 到 經 濟

上 困 難 時 的 情 景，我 深 深 了 解，許 多 員 工 都 是 中 國 移 民， 由 於 語 言 和 技 能 的 限 制，失 業 極 大 影 響 了 生 計，政 府 津 貼 非 長 遠 之 計，長 時 間 減 少 收 入 或 失 業，可 能 員 工 要 被 迫 轉 行，很 多 家 庭 都 會 受 到 影 響。每 個 人 都 有 自 己 的 家 人 要 照

顧，多 年 主 僕 關 係，大 家 已 是 一 家 人。」C a n s o n 認 為 在 困 境 中 互 相 扶 持 是 最 重 要 的，因 此 選 擇 堅 持 繼 續 營 業。他 認 真 聆 聽 每 一 個 員 工 的 需 要，當 他 知 道 有 些 員 工 無 力 支 付 房

租 和 按 揭 時，他 暗 裏 自 掏 腰 包 給 他 們 解 困，正 如 當 年 給 他 工 作 的 家 庭 一 樣，他 希 望 餐 館 是 一 個 團 結 大 家 的 地 方。

一 樣，也 許 這 是 中 國 文 化 的 一 部 分，化 不 開 的 人 情 味。「在 商 言 商」這 是 不 合 理 的，但 在 C a n s o n 眼 中，這 就 是 一 種 責

任。他 的 員 工 深 受 感 動，各 人 緊 守 崗 位，不 離 不 棄。當 然， 20

C a n s o n 的 分 享 給 我 很 多 反 思 的 面 向，其 中 最 重 要

的 是 r e s i l i e n ce。 R e s i l i e n ce 可 解 為 恢 復 力 或 回 彈 力，

是 A c r o s s U - h u b 經 常 談 及 的 主 題，也 是 我 從 生 態 系 統 的

專 業 訓 練 中 學 到 的。當 我 將 C a n s o n 的 經 歷 與 自 己 或 同 齡

人 的 經 歷 相 比，我 頓 時 看 見 我 們 年 輕 一 代 的 習 性。父 母 的 一 代 人 在 遭 受 打 擊 後 會 重 新 站 起 來，但 我 們 卻 習 慣 在 打

擊 來 臨 前 先 選 擇 躲 避。我 們 一 輩 大 多 數 人 從 未 經 歷 過 人

勢 洶 洶 的 新 冠 肺 炎，引 發 不 少 人 開 始 思 考 自 己 生 命

的 價 值，以 往 理 所 當 然 的 人 和 事，都 變 得 那 麼 彌 足

珍 貴。社 交 隔 離 令 實 施 之 下，不 但 拉 開 人 與 人 之 間 身 體 的 距 離，連 人 與 人 之 間 的 關 係 也 漸 行 漸 遠。

早 在 新 冠 肺 炎 疫 情 發 生 之 前， L a r r y La w 已 醒 覺 到 人 際

關 係 很 重 要，人 與 人 之 間 是 會 互 相 影 響 的。 「如果你對別 人 好，別 人 就 有 可 能 會 將 這 份 愛 傳 遞 開 去，不 能 空 談，一 定 要 實 踐 出 來，這 就 是 上 帝 希 望 見 到 的 事。」L a r r y 說。

L a r r y 決 心 在 自 己 經 營 的 度 假 酒 店 實 踐 愛 與 關 懷，多

些 照 顧 自 己 的 員 工。在 工 作 場 所 實 踐 愛 與 關 懷 並 不 容 易，L a r r y 坦 承，他 曾 遇 到 許 多 困 難。他 清 楚 記 得，曾 有 一

位 清 潔 員 工 主 動 向 他 提 出，儘 管 公 司 推 崇 愛 與 關 懷 的 領 導

風 氣，實 際 卻 不 是 這 麼 一 回 事，至 少 其 直 屬 經 理 對 員 工 的 態 度 不 佳。 L a r r y 聽 了 後，立 即 展 開 調 查，發 覺 所 指 的 經 理 是 總 經 理 的 太 太，總 經 理 和 他 的 太 太 確 實 沒 有 友 善 對 待 員

工。 L a r r y 感 到 為 難，但 是，為 了 履 行 承 諾，他 決 定 辭 退 兩

人。由 於 事 出 倉 促，沒 有 新 員 工 上 任 之 前，雖 然 L a r r y 對 渡 假 村 管 理 並 不 熟 悉，他 還 是 要 兼 任 總 經 理 的 職 務，從 頭 開 始 一 步 一 步 學 習 這 個 範 疇 的 知 識，他 心 想，這 是 上 帝 的 旨

意，讓 他 學 會 做 這 件 事，同 時 真 誠 實 踐「 行 公 義、好 憐 憫、 23

L a r r y 認 為 最 重 要 的 事 是 做 正 確 的 事，他 有 一 項 原 則，要

對接觸到的人做正確的事。曾經有一家人入住渡假村，父親 患 了 未 期 癌 症。為 了 使 他 們 更 舒 適，L a r r y 幫 助 他 們 免 費 升

級到私人套房。他認為金錢無法衡量人與人之間的關係，他 的 決 定 是 遵 循 上 帝 開 啟 的 道 路，走 向 真 善 美。他 強 調，工 作 的 價 值 在 於 工 作 以 外 對 更 高 生 命 價 值 的 追 求，這 比 掙 得 的 金錢更珍貴，他一直朝著這個令人耀眼的目標進發。

L a r r y 認 為 是 信 仰 讓 他 能 夠 對 待 員 工 如 親 人 一 般，他 形

容 這 是 一 種「 僕 人 領 袖 」的 管 理 模 式，而 當 員 工 體 驗 到 關 懷 的 時 候，他 們 會 像 親 人 一 樣 對 待 客 人，體 貼 他 們 的 需

夜，並 為 他 們 提 供 免 費 早 餐。 L a r r y 對 這 件 事 記 憶 猶 新，深 受 感 動，我 們 似 乎 看 見 淚 光 在 他 的 眼 眶 中 轉 動。

在 新 冠 肺 炎 肆 虐 下，L a r r y 的 公 司 也 面 臨 著 種 種 挑 戰。全

城 封 鎖 令 下，渡 假 村 被 迫 關 閉，他 只 能 解 僱 員 工，但 L a r r y 首 先 想 到 許 多 員 工 要 靠 薪 金 過 活，於 是 他 承 諾 員 工 3 0 天 的 補 貼，員 工 除 領 取 政 府 的 5 5 % 失 業 保 險 金 外，將 獲 補

貼 達 至 原 本 工 資 的 9 0 ％。這 項 及 時 雨 政 策 幫 助 了 許 多 員

工 舒 解 燃 眉 之 急，充 分 展 現 了 他 對 員 工 的 關 愛。事 實 上， L a r r y 很 擔 心 自 己 能 否 應 付 得 來，要 長 期 補 貼 過 百 員 工 並

不 容 易，他 不 知 道 這 種 情 況 會 持 續 多 久，但 相 信 有 上 帝 的

帶 領，便 繼 續 持「 勇 」而 行。終 於，政 府 資 助 來 了，3 0 天 後， 他 無 需 補 貼 員 工 的 工 資，他 才 鬆 了 一 口 氣。

疫 情 橫 行 期 間，L a r r y 的 女 兒 親 手 縫 製 口 罩，送 給 醫 護 人

員，也 送 給 L a r r y 的 員 工，女 兒 這 舉 動 令 他 感 到 溫 暖 之 餘， 也 啟 發 他 到 處 尋 找 口 罩 供 應 商，最 後，他 直 接 從 中 國 購 買 了 口 罩，並 捐 贈 了 2 , 0 0 0 個 醫 用 口 罩 給 當 地 醫 院 使 用，貢

獻 社 會。L a r r y 認 為，這 件 事 證 明 了 人 與 人 之 間 可 以 無 界 限 互 相 影 響，子 女 也 可 以 影 響 父 母。

L a r r y 一 直 在 思 考：作 為 一 個 基 督 徒 商 人，如 何 做 更 多 正

確 的 事 回 饋 社 會？一 天，L a r r y 接 到 市 長 的 來 電，希 望 他 能 為 露 宿 者 提 供 住 所。在 旁 人 眼 中，露 宿 者 的 一 貫 形 像 是 神

智 不 清、衣 衫 襤 褸，因 此 很 多 酒 店 都 不 願 讓 他 們 進 去，擔

心 會 傷 害 員 工 和 破 壞 酒 店 的 聲 譽。 L a r r y 徵 求 員 工 們 的 意 見，得 到 他 們 的 支 持，大 家 同 意 應 允 市 長 的 請 求。 25

又 一 次，他 想 起 以 前 大 食 會 上 員 工 們 的 燦 爛 笑 容，於 是

他 想 到 了 一 個 主 意：製 作 裝 有 肉 食 和 水 果 的 食 物 籃，送 給

被 解 僱 的 員 工，這 樣 即 使 他 們 在 逆 境 中 仍 然 感 到 温 暖。後 來 更 與 當 地 教 會 合 作，發 送 給 一 些 有 需 要 的 家 庭。食 物 籃

很 實 惠，可 以 一 家 人 共 同 分 享 喜 悅，一 舉 兩 得。他 還 向 曾 入 住 的 顧 客 發 出 邀 請，如 果 他 們 感 受 到 渡 假 村 工 作 人 員 的

關 懷 和 善 意，對 他 們 的 服 務 感 到 滿 意，請 慷 慨 解 囊 贊 助 食 物 籃，響 應 是 相 當 不 錯 的。

L a r r y 相 信： 「 這 是 上 帝 給 我 的 機 會，讓 我 成 就 這 些 善

頭到位啦」 ， 「收音準備好」 ， B i l l y 配 上 麥 克 風，

他 坐 在 鏡 頭 前，隨 著 工 作 人 員 的 指 示，開 始 徐 徐

述 說 一 個 保 衛 士 的 故 事。

故 事 從 七 年 前 說 起，當 時 B i l l y 在 香 港 從 事 保 險 銷 售，入

行 前 他 沒 有 預 料 到 這 份 工 作 竟 然 改 變 了 他 對 職 業 的 想 法。 他 形 容 那 是 一 份「 沒 有 良 心 才 能 做 得 好 」的 工 作，認 為 繼 續 做 下 去 會 逐 漸 迷 失 自 己。他 不 想 要 這 種 職 業，他 希 望 有

一 份 能 夠 養 活 家 人，並 且 幫 助 到 別 人 的 職 業，於 是，他 重 返 校 園，攻 讀 社 工 碩 士 學 位。

畢 業 之 後，B i l l y 和 太 太 深 思 熟 慮 後，決 定 帶 同 兒 子 移 民

多 倫 多，展 開 新 生 活。豈 料，因 為 沒 有 加 拿 大 工 作 經 驗，考

取 的 專 業 資 格 又 未 完 全 乎 合 加 拿 大 的 標 準，找 不 到 工 作。

正 在 徬 徨 無 助 之 際，噩 夢 驟 至，太 太 因 為 急 病，突 然 離 世， 留 下 他 和 兩 歲 大 的 兒 子。

日 子 縱 然 難 熬，卻 沒 有 擊 退 B i l l y 對 社 工 工 作 的 初 心，他

幾 經 努 力，終 於 在 一 所 華 人 老 人 護 理 中 心 找 到 工 作。 B i l l y 負 責 院 友 的 娛 樂 活 動，看 見 他 們 開 開 心 心 過 每 一 天，他 感

到 滿 足，感 到 這 份 工 作 很 有 意 義。 B i l l y 說： 「在眾多社會服 務 類 別 中，我 特 別 喜 歡 服 務 老 人 家，很 多 老 人 家 都 視 入 29

住 護 老 院 為 人 生 的 最 後 一 站，最 後 的 一 個 家，他 們 需 要 有

人 關 心，會 感 激 和 珍 惜 有 人 陪 伴。」 B i l l y 的 熱 誠 深 得 院 友 和 同 事 的 欣 賞，短 短 幾 年 便 晉 升 到 管 理 層，但 升 職 後 減 少

「 無 法 啦，我 要 升 職，要 養 家 嘛！囝 囝 了 接 觸 院 友 的 機 會，

只 有 6 歲，支 出 很 多 呢！」 B i l l y 壓 低 聲 線 多 加 一 句： 「有 時 候 記 掛 著 院 友，我 會 偷 偷 “ 鼠”( 溜 去 見 他 們 。」

新 冠 病 毒 突 然 襲 來，護 老 院 是 重 災 區，不 少 護 老 院 先 後

爆 發 疫 情。 B i l l y 工 作 的 護 老 院 人 人 自 危，人 心 惶 惶，空 氣

裏 瀰 漫 著 憂 慮 情 緒，濃 得 清 楚 可 見，大 家 都 擔 心 壞 消 息 出

現。 B i l l y 明 白，此 時 此 刻，人 心 團 結 比 甚 麼 都 重 要，為 了 阻 止 謠 言「 擾 亂 軍 心 」 ，他 鼓 勵 部 屬 講 出 心 中 的 憂 慮 和 疑

問，他 保 證 不 會 對 他 們 隱 瞞 事 實，並 盡 力 找 出 真 相，消 除 疑 慮。

一 眾 同 事 的 情 緒 慢 慢 穩 定 下 來，大 家 逐 漸 意 識 到 疫 情 不

是 一 時 半 刻 能 解 決 的 問 題，要 團 結 一 致，沈 著 應 戰。 B i l l y

看 見 護 理 人 員 是 老 人 家 唯 一 的 依 靠，大 家 也 記 掛 老 人 家 的

感 受 和 需 要，只 是 在 確 保 護 理 人 員 的 安 全 又 必 須 保 持 社 交 距 離 兩 者 之 間 找 到 一 個 平 衡 難 度 極 高，B i l l y 對 自 己 講，要 在 能 力 所 及 範 圍 內「盡 力 做」 「盡 力 試」 。

於 是，他 聯 絡 護 老 院 的 義 工 製 作 網 上 活 動，如 打 太 極、唱

戲 曲 等，另 一 方 面 組 織 同 事 幫 忙 院 友 外 出 買 水 果 和 零 食， 經 過 嚴 謹 的 消 毒 措 施 後 送 到 院 友 手 裡。在 隔 離 期 間，老 人 家 的 生 活 亮 點 就 是 學 習 操 作 網 上 程 式，下 訂 單 和 吃 零 食。

B i l l y 憶 述，疫 情 期 間 最 令 他 情 緒 波 動 的 情 景 莫 過 於 見

到老人家在彌留之際無法達成想見一家人最後一面的小

小 心 願。疫 情 初 期 護 老 院 禁 止 任 何 探 訪，後 來 措 施 稍 為 放 寛，不 過 每 位 院 友 一 次 只 准 許 一 位 家 屬 探 訪。院 友 家 屬 多 30

次 在 玻 璃 大 門 外 哭 著 懇 求 B i l l y 破 例，雖 然 家 屬 諒 解 B i l l y

不 是 狠 心 拒 絕，但 每 次 扮 演 這 否 決 的 角 色，B i l l y 都 感 心 酸 和 難 受。

下 了 班 的 B i l l y 也 不 輕 鬆，剛 上 一 年 級 的 囝 囝，學 校 因 為

疫 情 而 要 關 閉，自 己 是 前 線 工 作 人 員 要 上 班，每 天 都 擔 心 自 己 中 招 連 累 囝 囝。單 親 爸 爸 到 處 張 羅 D a y c a r e，盡 管 政

府 出 了 不 少 疫 情 津 貼 措 施 為 民 抒 困，但 是 附 加 的 費 用，以

及 檢 疫 和 防 疫 程 序，仍 使 他 百 上 加 斤。

B i l l y 慨 嘆： 「 護 理 院 工 作 無 法 居 家 線 上 進 行，面 對 工 作 和

家 庭，承 受 的 壓 力 和 付 出 的 努 力 每 天 有 增 無 減，而 從 政 府

得 到 的 幫 助 實 在 有 限，杯 水 車 薪。」肩 頭 上 扛 著 一 籮 筐 的

重 擔，B i l l y 僅 有 的 減 壓 方 法 就 是 趁 著 囝 囝 入 睡，或 放 工 之 後 前 往 接 兒 子 回 家 之 間 擠 出 少 許 空 檔，上 網 選 看 影 片，

或 到 附 近 球 場 打 打 籃 球，暫 時 卸 下 重 擔。

面 對 重 重 困 難，是 甚 麼 支 持 B i l l y 繼 續 前 行 呢？他 提 到 有

三 樣 東 西 一 直 支 持 著 他。

第 一，有 一 群 攜 手 合 作，共 同 進 退 的 同 事，在 疫 情 期 間 堅

守 崗 位，每 人 都 願 意 多 走 一 步，就 算 人 手 短 缺 需 要 加 班 都 沒 問 題。

第 二，與 眾 院 友 的 一 份 深 厚 情 誼， 「老 人 家 笑，我 會 笑 ; 他

們 哭，我 亦 哭」 ，這 份 休 戚 與 共 的 情 誼，令 B i l l y 掏 出 心 肝 同 他 們 共 度 難 關。

最 後，這 幾 年 面 對 逆 境 培 養 出「頂 硬 上」及「盡 力 做」的 堅

靱 力。

面 對 逆 境，有 人 會 氣 餒，會 抱 怨。 B i l l y 提 醒 我 們，人 生 沒

有 平 坦 易 走 的 路，惟 有 即 使 感 到 恐 懼，仍 然 咬 牙 堅 持，樂 觀 對 待 的 人 才 能 走 過 人 生 幽 谷，守 得 雲 開 見 明 月。在 這 次 訪 問 中，B i l l y 沒 有 給 我 們 講 道 理，但 我 們 從 他 身 上 切 切 實 實 學 習 到 最 重 要 的 道 理。

ith interviews having to be held online due to COVID-19, everyone is seen bustling around the empty office, trying to adapt to these new times. Through the awkward video calling setup, the youth interviewers are seen waiting from their home computers. Their overwhelming nervousness grows by the minute. Yet, in the midst of all the confusion, George was calm and welcoming. He was largely determined to share with the youths about his journey in his business, an alarm system company, along with insightful lessons that can be applied to everyday life. Despite tough times, George did not have to let go of any of his employees as he is still able to run his business. Although his sales have gone down, he was able to avoid some heavier losses due to his business motto of the 3-Ps: planning, partnership, and most importantly, perseverance. As he said himself, he “must be prepared for a crisis as it is the responsibility of the business owner or CEO to plan and be prepared for their business”. Though his plans slowed down, he was able to persevere and look at the bigger picture due to these principles.

“I didn’t make plans for COVID-19, because sometimes it could be dangerous when you’re only reacting to the situation. Sometimes the plan to the reaction is not always the best.”

George’s business has recently celebrated its 30 years anniversary of overcoming obstacles and finding success. Many people would deem George’s business highly successful due to its longevity, however, George strongly believes otherwise. As he speaks in Cantonese, his mother tongue, George goes into the first stage of his business motto’s 3-Ps: the need to plan for long term growth. George constantly highlighted the threat of a whole market sector getting absorbed with many bigger internet companies have the financial capacity to overpower smaller companies like George’s. So he took a chance and decided to create a long term plan involving the recruitment of a marketing company and started expanding his security products to adapt to the current times. Due to these measures, George admits that he was able to avoid much of the current crisis by planning long term growth and not being fixated on the smaller 36

details on a day-to-day basis. Although COVID-19 has slowed down his expansion plan, he realized with his past expertise that proactively focusing on the bigger picture allows more command over a situation whether it is for personal endeavors or the holistic growth for a business.

“Partnership is not one thing - you cannot find a partner right away - you need to build up your relationship.”

George’s drive to refine and enhance his business does not simply stop at the planning phase. With partnership as the second stage of his business motto, George took a leap of faith and decided to partner with a marketing company to help launch an online shop, create Google Ads, and incorporate many other features that relate to the current market trends. By establishing these connections, George was able to continue working with them during the quarantine, which helped maintain their growth during these times. George firmly mentions: “I may be doing more with them now, but I cannot say that when COVID-19 occurred - I can knock on their door and ask if they could be partners without previously establishing that connection - it would not work that way.”

“You have your ups and downs, but you need to have ongoing persistence.”

The recurring theme mentioned throughout is the final stage: persistence. As George echoed his drive to never give up and persist through any crisis in life, the room felt like a classroom where a professor was about to share some profound knowledge. With a serious tone, George 37

reiterates the importance of seeing the bigger picture.

Fluctuations might appear in the business from time to time, but when you look at the big picture, the business is trending towards success. With a heartfelt sigh, George looked at the youths and proclaimed that one must hold onto their ongoing persistent nature during difficult times, in order to see the fruition of hard work coming to life.

With the interview coming to an end, George sat in his chair and smiled softly. As he gazes away, he is reminded of his journey over all these years, and how his strong beliefs in the 3 P’s have helped him overcome many hardships. In fact, these hardships are so strong it had the ability to extinguish the ignited fire of hope within him. Yet time after time, his beliefs saved him from giving up. In addition, he was able to stay ahead of

his competitors and to broaden his horizons through detailed and sensible planning. The partnerships he established over the years have metaphorically held up bright lanterns for him when he was stuck in a dark tunnel. His ongoing persistence was like gasoline to his fire of hope; igniting his flames to keep on moving.

Without all of those factors, George wouldn’t be where he is today. As he took a telling gaze with a smile, he leaves the audience with his secret and hopes that many others can learn from his journey, following him towards gradual success.

店“O n e ’ s B ette r L i v i n g”其 中 一 位 老 闆，他 的 經 營 宗 旨 是 在 西 方 社 會 引 入 具 有 東 方 文 化 特 色 的 禮 品，為 顧 客 提 供 一 站 式 零 售 服 務。

談到創業歷史Harris說起初幾個香港舊同事和朋友邀

請 他 一 起 創 業，初 來 埗 到 就 得 朋 友 邀 請，是 肯 定 他 能 力

的 一 支 強 心 針。他 們 共 有 四 個 家 庭，根 據 各 人 的 經 驗 和 才

能，分 配 負 責 不 同 部 門，H a r r i s 理 所 當 然 負 責 人 事 管 理。 最 初，他 抱 著 試 一 試 的 心 態，擔 心 在 處 理 業 務 和 人 事 上 可

MAINTAINING AUTHENTIC CONNECTIONS THROUGH ACTION AND GENEROSITY INTERVIEWED BY Joel Lam & Tiffany Ore

F

reddy Tran is a young man in his early-20’s who has been involved in Across U-hub since he was about 16 years old. The interview was conducted in a cozy corner at Across U-hub, a place with special memories for Freddy. In the past five years since becoming involved at Across U-hub, Freddy has grown significantly in his skills and character. Not only did he learn hard skills such as event planning, logistics and marketing, he also met many inspiring people and gained valuable insights from their life stories. The late-afternoon sunlight reflected a bright atmosphere of friendship and mentorship, as the questions prompted Freddy to reflect on his journey in the past few months of living in a segregated virtual and physical world.

As many aspects of his life such as school and socializing moved online, Freddy found himself spending hours on the internet. As months of social distancing and lockdown persisted, he realized how the adverse impact COVID-19 has on the survival of Across U-hub, given that many programs are designed around in-person interactions and relationship-building. Throughout the 47

past year of changing climates and restrictions, he could see the organization adapt by offering virtual programs and in-person events following social distancing guidelines. Autumn is typically a season of celebration and fundraising for Across U-hub, but 2020 saw a shift to online fundraising initiatives. In past years, Freddy would contribute his time to help plan the fundraising gala, but this year, this was not the case. As a full-time student, he also was financially limited, but felt that the annual marathon was the next best thing he could do to show his gratitude and support the organization that has so greatly impacted his life with friendships and learning experiences.

Freddy is a regular participant in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM), having completed in previous years and was planning to register for this year as well. The marathon season motivated Freddy to refocus on his physical well-being as the lockdown continued. However, he had a feeling that the STWM would be held virtually this year given the circumstances.

When the registration opened, he was surprised to see a new category offered- “The Whole Shebang” - a combination of the distances of the full-marathon of 42K, half-marathon of 21K, 10km and 5km, totaling 78km.

Since the distances for the STWM could be accumulated for the whole month of October, he felt that running 42K would not be a breakthrough for himself, so he decided to go big, challenge himself, and was the first to register for the Whole Shebang.

Not one to do things half-heartedly, Freddy started training in September in preparation for the month-long marathon. Other than organizing his time to ensure that he could complete the entire distance, he also wanted to use this opportunity to improve in his running technique by tracking his time and by running the same route every day, measuring his incremental improvements. A side effect of his process was that he passed through the same neighborhoods and businesses regularly. As the days and weeks progressed, he was sad to notice the long-term impact the pandemic was having on the community as one by one, local businesses closed their doors.

To encourage the Across community and share his experience and knowledge in running, Freddy became involved in co-hosting the Running Support Facebook live event along with a few other runners and event organizers every Saturday morning at 10am.

Freddy learned from others and contributed his experiences to the Across Community who were 49

going through marathon training and fundraising. The team spent hours researching and preparing programs on nutrition, stretching, breathing techniques and other educational topics.

Aware that a major component of his participation in the STWM was to fundraise for an organization he cares deeply about, Freddy spent two weeks crafting individualized messages to his friends and connections asking for donations to support Across U-hub. Although he estimates the response rate to be about 5-10% of the people asked, he was surprised that some people responded to his general message on Facebook.

He personally thanked everyone who donated to him and learned how to accept rejections gracefully.

Freddy’s advice for young people who are afraid to ask their friends for donations is to focus on creating authentic connections with others. Don’t ask for money right away. Start the conversation casually about your running, and ease into why you are running and introduce the organization, then ask if they would be interested in donating. Don’t be pushy as you want to respect their decisions and maintain your relationship with them.

Freddy felt accomplished after completing The Whole Shebang and was thankful to see that his effort was able to help Across U-hub fundraise more money than in previous years. Going into the month, he felt confident that “He knew he could do it”, referring to the 78km distance goal. Little did he know that in that month, he would run an additional 20km because of power donors who agreed to donate an amount of money for 50

each additional kilometer run in support of Across U-hub.

Freddy’s delighted face in the interview spoke volumes about his satisfaction in surpassing his goals of keeping healthy, running 78km, and supporting an organization that has been influential in his life.

All of Freddy’s actions have definitely had a reaction and direct impact on the actions of others in the community, but this notion seemed to catch him off guard. As the first to register for The Whole Shebang, others in the community gained confidence from Freddy’s bold move and decided also to challenge themselves with completing 78km. Freddy was speechless for a few moments after learning of his impact. When asked about his feelings on what he experienced in the months leading up to and after the marathon, Freddy said he felt an “unbelievable sense of great accomplishment”.

A person’s actions naturally reflect their heart and priorities. Although seemingly limited in his ability to financially address the challenges brought on

by COVID-19 in his neighborhood and places of significance, Freddy took courageous action in tackling a big goal, engaging with team members, and motivating others to make the most of the opportunity. Freddy generously gave his time and efforts, encouraged others and made a positive impact in the communities around him.

Nancy Fok I feel like I was given another medium to reflect on my own experiences and feelings through other people’s writings and stories.

Joanna Kwok I recognize that soliciting for donations is out of the comfort zone for many, especially young participants, but I like the positive attitude that Freddy takes. He focuses on the relationship and the message and is not afraid of rejections.

步 里 數 來 完 成 賽 事，可 以 個 人 或 組 隊 參 加 不 同 長 度 賽 事， 並 使 用 運 動 程 式 記 錄 跑 步 的 速 度 和 距 離。由 於 參 賽 者 的 資

在 線 教 學 也 是 疫 情 下 的「 新 常 態 」 ，對 就 讀 中 學 的 Z a r a

是 一 個 新 挑 戰。在 線 學 習，老 師 不 可 能 同 一 時 間 注 意 到 每

個 學 生 的 反 應，學 生 的 表 現 變 得 很 被 動，沒 有 課 堂 氣 氛。

同 學 之 間 亦 缺 乏 互 動，Z a ra 覺 得 自 己 一 個 人 獨 自 學 習，常

常 擔 心 自 己 理 解 錯 了 而 做 錯 作 業，她 擔 心 成 績 會 下 降。她

認 為，自 主 學 習 非 常 重 要，雖 然 沒 有 課，但 她 比 以 前 要 更 主 動 和 努 力 學 習。

S t e v e n 是 十 二 年 級 高 中 學 生，平 時 下 課 後 在 一 家 餐 廳

兼 職，但 因 疫 情 的 緣 故，餐 廳 停 業 了。 St e v e n 說，兼 職 對

believe that I’ve learned and reflected on many aspects about myself and the world through these experiences.

First off, as someone who prefers to thoroughly plan out my actions, this experience has really challenged my abilities to think on the spot and adjust my plans according to the current situation. The path that both interviews took were vastly different from what I’ve anticipated, thus challenging me to act quickly and adapt to the situation accordingly. For example, for one of the interviews, most of our questions were related to the business aspects of the COVID-19 situation.

However, once we started the interview, it was clear that the interviewee was more passionate about the social aspects affected by COVID-19. Thus, I had to adapt to the turns of events and to come up with more relevant questions on the spot.

Furthermore, the experiences shared by the interviewees really resonated with me and has helped me better understand the current COVID-19 situation. In school, we focus on the broader aspects of the pandemic such as numerical impacts of COVID-19 and less on the 61

personal experience of individuals who are impacted by the situation. By only looking at the numbers of confirmed cases, it is difficult to empathize and truly feel the terrors of the situation. However, when I heard the stories our interviewees shared, I heard both their personal struggles and the impact it has on their communities; making me realize how the situation is much more devastating than I thought. The interviews have really pushed me to reflect on my current behaviours, and has encouraged me to believe that even as an individual, I can make a difference.

his is the first interview I have ever conducted as an interviewer. I have been to numerous volunteer and job interviews for most of my young adult life. But being an interviewer is a fresh and valuable opportunity for me to experience it from a different perspective.

I have learned how to consider the practical aspects and factors of a well-delivered interview.

Planning is the most crucial step when preparing for an interview. First, we have to brainstorm and develop questions based on the information and knowledge we have about our interviewee. During the interview, we have to think quickly to obtain additional information from the interviewee as new stories emerge from the conversation. This requires us to be flexible and attentive to ask additional questions with the ones we had prepared beforehand.

Like everyone else, our interviewee Jireh had his difficult moments during the quarantine. However, he was able to move away from his negativity and regain his positive outlook in life. I was inspired by his attitude 63

toward the pandemic as it is different from most people. Most people tend to say “I can’t” or “I don’t have enough” when they are met with hardships during the pandemic. But if we are grateful and can change our mindset into “I can” or “that is more than enough”, we will see our life with abundance and fullness.

We can incorporate Jireh’s positivity by starting the day with a positive mindset to encourage ourselves first thing in the morning. This practice can be a fuel for us to get through the day. In terms of seeking ways to help others as Jireh mentioned, checking in with your social circle frequently seems to be the most effective and healthy practice. We can provide support to people in our social circles, especially the extroverts who are used to being around people all the time.

cross the Lens was a meaningful project that I was involved in this summer. It consisted of multiple stages and I would like to share this experience with you. Our purpose was to collect voices of individuals and businesses in COVID-19 with a series of interviews and navigate through the difficulties our community was facing. After being selected as one of the interviewers, I received professional training on how to conduct interviews. We learned a lot of useful techniques such as initiating conversation by complimenting the interviewee’s outlook. Because we were not familiar with the interviewee, it was critical to minimize discomfort and try to ease the tension before starting the interview.

During the interview preparation stages we learned a bit more about the interviewee, who worked as a social worker in senior homes during the pandemic. Our team was especially interested in his occupation since front-line workers are put under much pressure in this unprecedented time. One thing worth mentioning in the preparation was that we realized a good question needs to be both broad and specific. It sounds contradicting 65

but being a broad topic allows the responder to process his thoughts and generate various aspects in the answer; where a specific question sets the expectations of what we hope to get out of the question. Most importantly, we prepared follow-ups on each question in case there was a need to elaborate on a response.

When it came to the actual interview, we did well in prompting the interviewee to touch on several points such as how he dealt with challenges at work and what motivated him to stay in his position. Here were areas of improvement as well with how we could have had a better control on how the interview flows to avoid having moments of silence. We tried to place the emphasis of our article on the interviewee’s passion and responsibilities in his job because we wanted to present the determination and resilience displayed from front-line heroes, something that is not highlight often to the public.

I would have to say that I was so moved by his story and hope to spread his experience and experiences of many front-line workers to the public. This project gave me insights into how people around us are living during this time and helped me grow as a community-oriented person. Overall, I think it was a great interview debut and our team definitely put up an exceptional project!

M

any people believe the old (past) norm, because of the pandemic, has been rewritten to a new (now) norm. But the fact is, the new norm has already happened – coexistence of the physical and virtual way of life has transpired for some time. The pandemic has pushed us to accelerate the speed of the adoption. But despite past or now, there are some values and beliefs that can stand the test of time, that never grows old and are worthy to be passed on. We often conclude that old cultures and values are irreverent to our time. Indeed, time is advancing, and we cannot let old cultures and values dictate every aspect of our current life. To keep pace with time and culture is necessary. Unfortunately, with our cultural progress, some deep-rooted values and beliefs have been abandoned. This book not only records the moving stories of resilience in times of adversity, but more importantly, it gives youths an opportunity to read about the values and beliefs of the previous generation through their own eyes.

The pandemic is relentless and disrupts our daily routines.

It brings forth inconveniences and anxiety to many.

However, when we look at adversity through different lens, often a strength will burst through, birthing to countless genuine and touching stories to be written—these stories have struck the hearts of many.

We are grateful for all the guests who were interviewed.

Your wholehearted sharing have touched the hearts of every youth. Through the journey, the reflection, repair, reconciliation, sense of mission, persistence, and watchfulness that were inspired in the participants are still brewing. The story has just begun and we need to observe closely to see what is to come.

Ironically, in the “Postscript” of the entire book, we announce that we are back to the beginning—starting from the “Preface” because we want to continue on—from the beginning, looking for life’s lost values and beliefs. Stories will continue, stay tune with us.

的 常 態「 已 經 」出 現，實 體 和 虛 擬 並 行 的 生 活 方 式 本 已 存 在 多 時，疫 情 不 過 迫 使 我 們 面 對 和 接 受 這 個 鐡 一 般 的 事 實。

時 代 在 進 步，我 們 必 須 與 時 並 進，決 不 能 墨 守 成 規，固 步

自 封。遺 憾 的 是，隨 著 時 代 的 發 展，一 些 人 生 哲 理 和 信 念 被 棄 之 如 敝 屣，因 為 我 們 常 常 認 為 古 老 的 文 化 和 價 值 觀 就
