Across U-hub organized the "CRAFTeria - Art & Handmade Bazaar" on July 14 at the Varley Art Gallery in Unionville, Markham, to promote local and Hong Kong young Asian artisans. This bazaar featured over 30 handmade craft stalls, showcasing items such as weaving, jewelry, leather goods, ceramics, cement ornaments and decorations, and preserved flowers It was more than just a market; it was an opportunity to foster meaningful interactions and build a deeper sense of community. Volunteers, citizens, and artists came together to create unforgettable memories

I want to share three things that left a deep impression on me.

Firstly, the 1,700 visitors from different ethnic backgrounds who attended the event left a lasting impression. Looking back at the event photos, I noticed everyone was smiling. Why was everyone so happy? Many participants later shared with me, "Every craft here is particularly beautiful! Unlike ordinary markets where only one in ten stalls has good stuff, every stall here is of high quality!" It turns out that appreciating beautiful things naturally brings joy to people

Secondly, I was deeply moved by the 30+ young artisans. Many of them are new immigrants, and although most have over ten years of crafting experience, they face numerous challenges in establishing their art careers in Canada. Participating in the CRAFTeria bazaar helped them expand their social networks and showcase their work to the public. They were pleasantly surprised by the strong support, with many visitors not just buying their items but also engaging deeply, sharing stories, and showing genuine interest. It turns out that connecting with people is the key to feeling a sense of belonging in a community.

What touched me the most were the 30+ young volunteers and staff members From planning and coordination to setting up canopies, arranging tables and chairs, and setting up audio equipment from 7 a.m. on the event day, they demonstrated our adaptability and execution skills, even when facing an unexpected afternoon downpour Every participant and artisan praised the event, and the unforgettable hands-on experience and sense of accomplishment became the foundation of their confidence. Despite the challenges, seeing the value the event brought to everyone and the community motivates young people to continue doing their best with the same serious attitude next time.

Exploring the Hidden Gems of Toronto

In our last City Mosaic trip in June, we took participants to the Parkdale neighborhood to experience Tibetan culture. Now, we ’ re excited to announce our upcoming City Mosaic on August 10th, where our dedicated group of volunteers has crafted a unique experience to showcase the beauty of our city.

This time, we'll embark on a guided tour fully led by our volunteers We will explore the charm and history of Cabbagetown, a vibrant community with a rich past. Personally, I am very much looking forward to visiting one of Toronto's oldest and most picturesque cemeteries: Necropolis Cemetery. During our site visit, we noticed the diversity in monument types they can be small or large, lying flat on the ground, on a plaque, or on a tombstone, with so many different styles The whole planning team was eager to learn more. So, I reached out to Agnes, a monument designer whom we interviewed for our past Across The Lens publication, and invited her to join us for the tour to share the backgrounds of different monuments I am sure this will be the highlight of our trip, as we seldom get a chance to delve into such a topic.

Beyond all the incredible destinations we will visit around the Cabbagetown and Riverdale neighborhoods, the most valuable aspect of our journey will be the conversations between participants and interactions with the local communities This is the essence of City Mosaic: to explore, experience, and expand.

Hope to see more youth joining us on August 10 to uncover the hidden stories of our city and explore its rich history For more information, visit: citymosaic.ca
