First came the Hong Kong film “Papa”, and before one could catch a breath, the British production “Adolescence” emerged, shaking audiences worldwide and sparking deep reflection Both films delve into the core issues of modern crises uncontrolled social media, bullying in schools and communities, gender identity struggles, intergenerational communication barriers, parental helplessness, and the failures of the education system. Coincidentally, both stories begin with a juvenile murder case, yet each takes a unique approach: “Papa” focuses on a father’s inner struggles, offering no clear solutions but instead portraying pain, regret, longing, and resilience with raw authenticity. “Adolescence”, in contrast, employs a simple yet powerful narrative to explore the root causes of these issues, exposing the unsettling truth that "the murderer is never just one person."

Films and media are often seen as entertainment, with lighthearted stories generally preferred for their ability to offer an escape from daily life. However, these two films are anything but an escape. They use realistic and multidimensional storytelling to confront harsh realities, challenging the conventional mindset of defining problems first and then seeking solutions. Instead of providing neatly packaged answers, they guide viewers to reexamine life, relationships, and society Works like these honest, thoughtprovoking, and deeply moving have been long overdue.

I especially encourage parents to watch these films, despite their heavy themes They present a rare opportunity for meaningful conversations with your children, fostering deeper understanding of each other’s thoughts and emotions. You may find that such discussions, rather than feeling burdensome, bring unexpected relief and resonance. Both films depict parents' efforts to support their children, yet in the end, they still feel lost and helpless. Perhaps the issue is not about "doing enough" but rather about truly understanding the realities of teenage growth.

At Across U-hub, we hold the same belief. Our mission is not to impose order on young people, fix so-called problems, or provide ready-made solutions We do not see young people as issues to be solved, nor do we assume there is only one path forward. Instead, we choose to walk alongside them, nurturing connections, sharing their stories, and creating lasting memories

Three years ago, we established the Across U-Can Youth Award, not just to celebrate success but to honor the journey of personal growth. You may still be facing challenges, struggling to find your way but success is only one marker of growth, not the only standard. What truly matters is perseverance and the spirit of never giving up Growth is a continuous process of reflection, adjustment, and shared experiences with those on a similar path.

The Across U-Can Youth Award is now open for applications We invite you to participate and encourage the young people around you to apply. We look forward to hearing your story and celebrating your journey of resilience and growth

A Meaningful March Break Visit to Markham Food Bank

During March Break, we had the opportunity to bring a group of high school students and volunteers to visit the Markham Food Bank For most participants including myself it was our first time stepping into a food bank. Many of us had little understanding of how food banks operate or the extent to which they support individuals and families in need

The visit began with an insightful session led by the Markham Food Bank supervisor, who shared valuable information about food insecurity and the growing demand for assistance. We learned about the challenges faced by those relying on food banks and the importance of community donations and volunteer support.

Beyond learning, we also got hands-on experience by packing “goodie bags” with essential food items for clients picking up their monthly supply. This experience gave us a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into food distribution and the real impact of small contributions

This visit was eye-opening and left a lasting impression on all of us Many students shared that they never realized how much effort goes into running a food bank and how crucial community support is. We are incredibly grateful to Markham Food Bank for welcoming us and allowing us to be part of their mission.
