June 19

You can get the most recent and up to date activity cancellations, postponements, and scheduled make-ups due to uncooperative weather conditions and forecast by calling 540-245-5727 ext. 4.

REGISTRATION

Participants must register before the start of all programs; you are not considered registered for a program unless payment is made in full. Augusta County Parks and Recreation’s programs have a minimum and maximum number of participants. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first paid basis until a program is full. Once a program is full, ACPR may take names for a waiting list but does not guarantee anyone on a waiting list acceptance into a program. ACPR reserves the right to cancel a program due to lack of enrollment. In such a case, enrollees will be promptly notified of the cancellation. You may register online, by mail, by phone, or in person at our office.

PAYMENT

Payment in full is due at the time of registration, unless the specific activity/trip/program description outlines an otherwise approved payment schedule that includes an initial deposit. You may pay by check, cash, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. Please do not send cash with mail in registrations. All checks and money orders are payable to Augusta County Parks and Recreation or ACPR. A $30 return check fee is charged for all returned checks.

ONLINE REGISTRATION TIPS

You may register for our programs online using WebTrac. Go to www.augustarec.com and click on “Online Registration”. This will take you to our online registration system.

Once you get to WebTrac follow these steps:

Step 1: Sign in with your user name and password or create a new account. If you can’t remember your login details, just click “Need your username/password?” and your information will be sent to the email address associated with your account.

Step 2: Find the activity you desire, check for additional information and availability, then register!

Note: after clicking the shopping cart icon to register for an activity, a window will appear at the bottom of your screen. Click on “Enroll Now” and you will be taken through the payment process.

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS

Full refunds will be given if Augusta County Parks and Recreation cancels a class, program, trip, etc. With any registration cancellation, a $10 cancellation fee will be retained (or the full fee if less than $10).

For activity and class programs (non-trips), refunds will be given up until 5 business days prior to when a program begins, minus the $10 cancellation fee. If pre-purchases have been made, these costs will also be deducted from the refund. No refunds will be approved after this date unless special circumstances warrant.

For all trip programs, no refunds will be given, unless your space on the trip can be filled. If a waiting list exists, ACPR will contact those on the waiting list to try to fill the space(s). If no waiting list exists OR those on the waiting list no longer want to participate in the trip, it will be the responsibility of the participant to resell their space(s) on the trip. In many cases, the department must make pre-purchases; therefore, this refund policy is not flexible. Note that the $10 cancellation fee will apply, even if the space is filled.

OVERNIGHT TRIP POLICY

For all overnight trips a minimum of $75 deposit per person is required to reserve your space. Deposits are nonrefundable unless the trip is cancelled by ACPR. If a person from a double/triple room withdraws from the trip or fails to pay the balance, it will be the responsibility of the remaining roommate(s) to pay the difference on the new room rate.

Augusta County Parks and Recreation is always looking for program instructors to teach a variety of topics for youth, adults, and seniors. Typically, areas of interest have proven to be arts and crafts, dance, music, financial matters, languages, outdoor activities, acting, and fitness or exercise. We are confident that there is more but we may not discover that until the topic is formally included in an offered activity—so share your ideas with us! Please fill out the program proposal on our website at www.augustarec.com to let us know about your special skill, talent or experience you would like to share with the community.

WINTER SAFETY TIPS

BEFORE WINTER STORMS AND EXTREME COLD

Test your smoke alarms!

• What type do you have? Hard wired with battery back up or battery only? Did you know Augusta County has a free smoke alarm program?

Augusta County Residents may be eligible for:

• Free battery only smoke alarms, one per floor, installed by fire or EMS personnel.

• IF your current alarms do not work, or are older than 10 years old.

• However, if you have hard wired alarms, you really should replace them with more hardwired alarms, (but we do not give them away)

FOR MORE INFORMATION:

https://www.co.augusta.va.us/government/departments-andoffices/fire-rescue/fire-life-safety/smoke-alarms

Or scan the QR Code

• Prepare an emergency kit for both your home and vehicle to include bottled water, canned or non-perishable food, flashlights, and extra batteries. For more information visit - www.ready.gov

• Snow and Ice

• Shoveling snow can trigger Heart Attacks, shovel in moderation!

• Alternative to shoveling may be to use rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways, also sand can be used. You can also place a bag of sand in the back of your vehicle to improve traction if you have to go out in the snow/ice.

• Make sure you have snow shovels and other snow removal equipment close and in good working condition.

OUTDOOR SAFETY - APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS

Ready for some outdoor exercise and adventure? Here are a few pointers:

• Winter’s inactive muscles can take only so much strain. Don’t overdo it — build up slowly so you don’t have strains that can put you out of commission for some time.

• Spring’s extra rain and thawing snow can cause normally safe rivers, streams, and creeks to turn treacherous. Even standing on banks can be risky as they can be undercut by rushing water and give in under your weight.

• Springtime is also severe weather time. If the skies look threatening, check to see if a storm watch or warning has been issued before you initiate outdoor activities. If you’re already outside and thunderstorms threaten, go immediately into a building or enclosed vehicle. For tornadoes, go to the nearest safe structure, or the basement or interior first-floor room of your home. If there’s no time to follow these precautions, take cover in a ditch or depression in the ground.

• Ready to do some home repairs? On average, about 145,000 people visit the emergency room each year, because of ladder mishaps.

• Ensure you have a working flashlight and battery-powered radio for spring storms. By taking the right precautions when warmer weather beckons, you and those around you can enjoy a safer, healthier spring.

Augusta County Fire-Rescue (ACFR) is asking for your help in keeping fire hydrants that are close to your home or business clear of snow in the winter and free of weeds and shrubbery in the summer by participating in the Adopt-A-Hydrant program.

TO TAKE PART IN THE

ADOPT-A-HYDRANT PROGRAM,

FIRE-RESCUE ASKS

PROGRAM.

THAT YOU:

• Shovel the area around the fire hydrant after each snowfall. Clear the area approximately three (3) feet around the hydrant as well as a path from the street or roadway to the fire hydrant so that the hydrant is visible and accessible.

• During the summer months, please make sure that the same three-foot path around the hydrant is free of weeds, shrubbery, flowerbeds, etc and can be seen easily.
