Welcome to the 36th COBIS Annual Conference A Warm COBIS Welcome to the 36th COBIS Annual Conference In this busy life, now that you’ve arrived from all corners of the globe to #COBIS17, take a moment to reflect. In what ways can you and your teams feel proud of transforming lives? This could be by drawing out character and personality, by instilling strong self-esteem and a mindset of ‘when’ not ‘if’ and ‘I can’ as opposed to ‘I can’t’; it could be through academic achievement or by sharpening inquisitive and brilliant minds… By now, I’m confident that transformative moments are flooding the connected internet of things in your mind. Guaranteed, at this moment, no #filterbubbles and no #fakenews!

Transformations are inevitable in all walks of life. Some for the better and some for the worse.

Collectively, as educators in a fast paced, frequently unpredictable and ever changing world, we share a determination and a commitment to transforming the lives of children and young people worldwide. Needless to say, this is regardless of individual ability or personal circumstance.

With that in mind, as the 36th COBIS Annual Conference is out of the blocks and running, the talented COBIS Executive Team, COBIS Board and myself are once again delighted, honoured and excited to welcome you to the magnificent city of London. Perhaps this is the first time you’ve joined us at conference? If so, you’ll meet new friends and colleagues. That can be guaranteed. Members of the COBIS family of schools, Supporting Members and exhibitors are well known for providing a warm and inclusive welcome.

Together, over the next few days, we’ll explore the theme of ‘Transformations’ in education by focusing on performance, professionalism, wellbeing and school improvement. Led by you, there will be plenty of opportunity for participation, lively debate and professional networking.

In addition, during conference you’ll gain a deeper understanding about the COBIS Patron’s Accreditation and Compliance system.

Following a successful pilot and launch on 1 April 2017, this new school improvement and external validation system is the primary route to COBIS membership. These rigorous standards were born out of consultation with you, our valued COBIS members. So, let’s pause to recognise and thank the pilot schools, trained Lead Improvement Partners and Peer Accreditors, the multiple schools, organisations, Supporting Members and ministries of education worldwide who contributed to the consultation and launch of these stretching quality assurance and accreditation standards for international British schools worldwide.

To wrap up my introduction, thank you to all of you, our valued exhibitors, delegates, speakers and guests. Conference is for you and the educational communities which you serve and represent. Also, on a personal note and on behalf of the COBIS Board, a sincere thank you to the wonderful COBIS Executive Team and the talented staff here at the InterContinental London – The O2 for the meticulous planning, preparation and delivery of what will be an enjoyable and memorable learning experience for all.

Dear Friends and Colleagues, ‘Transformations’: what better theme to inspire our Annual Conference this year?

For our world today is undergoing many. Much in current news are political transformations – as allegiances and voter preferences shift, along with some of the familiar boundaries of national and global life. While these may have surprised, we already had in mind the economic and social transformations of technology and scientific and medical knowledge, of life expectancy, population and environmental challenge.

In schools, we are used to change: how were the last few decades of your professional life?

But our duty now is to educate our students to live happily and successfully in this changing world – for they will see many transformations in their lifetime. Their knowledge, intellectual and social skills, their adaptability and wellbeing need our schools to be transformative places. They need great teaching, and school leaders of good sense, moral and professional courage, skill and vision.

COBIS is working hard for you – and is itself transforming, as we focus not just upon our growing membership but also their quality. Our COBIS Patron’s Accreditation was designed to support your development in a way that is modern and up-to-date, and sensitive to your international context. The brand new 5-year school development, improvement and review cycle has been developed following extensive research and consultation.

The COBIS Patron’s Accreditation and COBIS Compliance system is distinct from other accreditation and inspection systems, with elements of autonomy for schools to select areas to evaluate which fit with their identified development objectives. COBIS recognises that schools are highly diverse, existing in complex contexts. Keynote Speaker Biographies Robert Senior CEO Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi After studying History & Politics at Durham University, Senior began his advertising career at BWBC & Co before moving to DMB&B. Senior founded Fallon London in 1998 with four partners and together they grew the business from a start-up to a 190 person strong multi award-winning agency, famed for work on Skoda, BBC, Sony and Cadbury. They were named Campaign Magazine’s Agency of the Year in 2006 & 2007. Fallon London joined the Publicis Groupe in 2006.

Senior is currently the Worldwide CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi and the Saatchi & Saatchi Fallon Group, a minigroup within the Publicis Groupe that aims to drive growth and creative excellence across the agencies.

He recently added the role of UK CEO of Publicis Communications to his remit, and leads all of the UK creative agencies and companies within Publicis Groupe, including Leo Burnett, Publicis, Saatchi & Saatchi, MSL and Prodigious.

Senior is a guest lecturer at the London Business School and the London School of Economics. Outside the Agency world, Senior is a private entrepreneur, running an alpine property business in France. A passionate skier, cyclist and former triathlete, Senior is also a qualified Austrian ski instructor who has taught in Austria, Switzerland and France. Robert Senior is also an alumnus of a COBIS School.

Mark Steed Director, JESS, Dubai Mark S. Steed spent his career working in top independent schools in the UK before moving to Dubai in September 2015 to take up the reins as the Director of JESS. In the UK he worked as a Teacher, Head of Department, and Boarding Housemaster prior to his two senior leaderships roles as Headmaster of Kelly College in Devon; and then as Principal of the Berkhamsted Schools Group. Mark has a particular interest in how new technologies can be used in education and chaired the UK Independent Schools Council IT Strategy Group from 2007 to 2015. He writes and speaks regularly about education and technology. He has degrees from Cambridge and Nottingham Universities and is currently in his final year of an Executive Masters in Management with Ashridge Business School.

Professor Dame Alison Peacock CEO, Chartered College of Teaching Alison Peacock DBE, DL, DLitt is Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teaching. The Chartered College opened for membership in January 2017 and aims to provide a professional body ‘by teachers, for teachers’. Prior to joining the Chartered College, Dame Alison was Executive Headteacher of The Wroxham School in Hertfordshire. Her career to date has spanned primary, secondary and advisory roles. She is a member of the Royal Society’s Education Committee, a peer member of the Teaching Schools Council and a trustee of both the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors and of Teach First. In March 2015, Alison was appointed by the Department for Education as a member of the commission on assessment without levels and she is author of Assessment for Learning Without Limits.

Professor Ian Robertson Chair in Psychology, Trinity College Dublin, and author of The Stress Test Ian Robertson is a clinical psychologist and neuroscientist with a unique ability to apply his research to the pressures of everyday life. His previous books, Mind Sculpture, The Mind’s Eye and The Winner Effect, have been translated into many languages and he is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading researchers in neuropsychology.

Ian holds the Chair in Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, and is a visiting professor at University College London. Dr Robertson is also T. Boone Pickens Distinguished Scientist at the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas. He has held senior academic appointments at Cambridge, Edinburgh and Columbia Universities. He has also been elected a Fellow of the US Association for Psychological Science and the British Psychological Society.

Ian’s latest book is The Stress Test: How Pressure Can Make You Stronger and Sharper.

Why is it that some people react to seemingly trivial emotional upset – like failing an unimportant exam – with distress, while others power through life-changing tragedies showing barely any emotional upset whatsoever? How do some people shine brilliantly at public speaking when others stumble with their words and seem on the verge of an anxiety attack? Why do some people sink into all-consuming depression when life has dealt them a poor hand, while in others it merely increases their resilience? The difference between too much pressure and too little can result in either debilitating stress or enduring demotivation in extreme situations. Dr Abdulla Al Karam Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General, Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Dubai Dr Abdulla Al Karam is Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), responsible for the quality and growth of Dubai’s private education sector, including early learning centres, schools, universities and training institutes. Dr Al Karam is a board member of the National Qualifications Authority of the UAE Federal Government, as well as United Arab Emirates University. He is a board member of the Social Sector, Government of Dubai and is a member of the Higher Committee for Protection of the Rights of People with Disabilities. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation and the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Previously, Dr Abdulla held positions in various government sectors, including that of Vice Chairman and Secretary General for the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic Performance, Chairman of the Dubai Government’s Human Resources Committee and board member of the Dubai Knowledge Fund. Prior to the formation of KHDA, Dr Abdulla held the post of CEO of Dubai Knowledge Village and was also Head of Research at Dubai Internet City.

He began his career as a software engineer in the United States and France. Dr Abdulla holds a PhD in computer engineering from the University of South Carolina.

Mark Garnier MP Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for International Trade Mark Garnier was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for International Trade on 17 July 2016. He was elected as the Conservative MP for Wyre Forest in May 2010. Mark was educated at Charterhouse School, Surrey. In 1982 he began a 17 year career in the City of London, initially working on the floor of the London Stock Exchange before specialising in Far Eastern and other global emerging market investment banking. Mark was a district councillor of the Forest of Dean District Council from 2003 to 2007 and was elected as the Conservative MP for Wyre Forest in May 2010. He served on the Treasury Select Committee (2010 – 2016) and the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards (2012 – 2014). Mark also served as chairman on a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups and was previously the Prime Minister’s trade envoy to Burma, Brunei and Thailand.

Bill Sweeney CEO, British Olympic Association Bill Sweeney is CEO at the British Olympic Association. He joined in November 2013 and is responsible for directing the day-to-day activities of the BOA, including overseeing Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games and the many other international, multi-sport events in which Team GB compete.

From 2003-2010, Sweeney served as Senior Vice President of adidas Reebok Group, where he was responsible for the global management and strategic direction of a multi-billion euro business unit.

Following that Sweeney was Global Head of Business Development for PUMA AG. Prior to his career in the Sports industry he held various senior brand management and marketing positions with Unilever, Mars, and British American Tobacco.

Seminar Overviews Sunday 7 May 2017 Sunday Morning Seminars 1. Having Reached the Top, What Next for Successful Schools? (Presentation) Mike O’Sullivan, Primary Head Teacher, The British School of Kuwait This seminar is reflective, and sometimes light-hearted and humorous. It looks at leadership, and how organisations are led and transformed. It examines successful leadership, and what the research tells us just when the pinnacle is reached. It draws on practical case studies, and some theory, on sustaining exceptional leadership, which might ensure longevity of tenure for the individual leader and the continued success of the organisation. References will also be made to the way COBIS has changed to meet the needs of a global membership base.

Mike is a Primary Head Teacher at The British School of Kuwait (BSK), one of the largest overseas British Schools in the world. BSK is an outstanding BSO, and is an Accredited Member of COBIS. He has been a Head Teacher for many years in a number of schools in Ireland and internationally.

Using CPD as a Core Lever for Sustained School Improvement (Workshop) Liz Free, Director, International Leadership Academy, The British School in The Netherlands We know from international research and evidence that “the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers” (2007 McKinsey Report). This session will explore the national (UK) and international Continuing Professional Development and Learning (CPDL) landscape and will consider what we currently know about CPDL as a core lever for school improvement, what consistently works and how you as a school leader can begin to embed principles of good practice within your school to raise standards of teaching and learning.

Liz Free is the Director of the International Leadership Academy at The British School in The Netherlands. Before joining BSN, Liz was Head of Professional Development at Oxford University Press and established the largest CPD operation in the UK, delivering CPD nationally and internationally to 13,000 schools and 120,000 teachers annually. She has recently spoken at a number of events including Practical Pedagogies 2016, Westminster Forum and the joint TDT/NAHT ‘Developing Great Teaching’ series, about the international evidence around effective CPD. She was previously Head of Primary and Vice-Principal at the British School of Boston and Head of Junior School at Howell’s in Cardiff.

4. Student Attitudes: The Key Component of Academic Success (Presentation) Nicola Lambros, Deputy Head, King’s College, The British School of Madrid Are attitudes holding your students back? Nicola Lambros will discuss her experience in using attitudinal data to transform the outcomes achieved by students in international schools. Most assessment carried out in schools delivers the teacher’s perspective of the student – what have they achieved? What should we expect of them? Only by looking at things from a student’s perspective can we understand what they feel capable of, and determine what learning and pastoral support they may need.

Nicola believes wholeheartedly that a strong pastoral programme underpins academic success and is passionate about spreading the importance of focusing on student attitudes rather than grades if all children are to reach their full potential to become successful lifelong learners. An experienced senior leader in education, Nicola recently led the development of a secondary international school in Kuala Lumpur; establishing an innovative curriculum based on outstanding pastoral care, with positive education at its core, enabled all students to realise their full potential resulting in outstanding IGCSE and A Level results. This experience combined with her MA research has reinforced her belief that focusing on how schools can positively impact student attitudes is the key to raising attainment in schools and improving academic success. Now the Deputy Head, whole school at King’s College, Soto in Madrid, Nicola is keen to work with other educators to place student attitudes as the top priority in schools.

5. Transforming Your School and Communities through Student Led Social Action (Workshop / Supporting Member) Jonathan Harper, Chief Executive, Future Foundations This session will facilitate learning about how to support teachers and students to lead high quality social action projects which make a sustainable impact within your school and the community. We will discuss the meaning and importance of ‘double impact’ and the six principles (reflective, challenging, youth-led, socially impactful, progressive and embedded) of quality social action, drawing on research from the leading youth social action sector. We will share best practice examples from the United Kingdom including details of the most ambitious youth programme in the world, the National Citizen Service and Future Foundations’ own Global Social Leaders programme. Participants will leave with a toolkit for establishing social action projects and will find out about a new ‘school club’ model supported by the Royal Society of the Arts, designed to transform schools’ impact on the world.

The workshop will be led by Jonathan Harper, Chief Executive of Future Foundations and Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. Jonathan has worked with the previous and current British government and leading corporate and non-profit organisations to design and deliver youth leadership programmes.

Prior to Future Foundations he was UK Programme Director for Enactus, a non-governmental organisation established to develop the leaders of tomorrow through social action. He has a Masters from Cass Business School for Charity Marketing and Fundraising.

6. Transformational Leadership: Building School Wide Capacity (Workshop / Supporting Member) Steve Garnett, Dragonfly Training You probably know who your next leaders are going to be in your school but do they know what Transformational Leadership looks like and what they would be doing if adopting this approach?

Although it’s the most powerful leadership model we know, few recognise what is required to develop Transformational Leadership behaviours within their teams.

Steve Garnett has been a teacher for 24 years. He has delivered INSET to more than 7,000 teachers over the past 10 years in the UK, Ireland and across Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Teachers who have attended Steve’s courses have regularly described them as ‘inspirational’. Steve is an awardnominated author whose book The Subject Leader was shortlisted for Best Secondary Resource in the prestigious BESA awards. He has also written Using Brain Power in the Classroom and is co-author of Spoon Feed No More – Improving Classroom Performance which is a definitive guide to the philosophy and practice of Dragonfly Training.

The Paths of Conversion: Optimising Search, Social and Your Website for Optimal Engagement (Workshop / Supporting Member) Max Eisl, Director International Sales, Finalsite With rapid changes in technology, the functions of a school website have greatly transitioned. You should aim to maintain full control of the path prospective students, parents or faculty take when landing on your website from top traffic drivers like Facebook and Google. What do you want them to see when they land on your website from search? Is that different than social? What happens when they organically land there from search? Learn how to create paths of conversion by crafting personas for your marketing efforts, while optimising your school’s website for search and creating landing pages for specific goals.

For the past eight years, Max Eisl has worked with schools around the world in consulting, training and project management for educational technology products and services including student information systems, online learning platforms and communication platforms. He holds a BS in Chemistry/ Comprehensive Science/Secondary Education and Masters in Educational Leadership and worked in schools for 14 years.

Sunday Afternoon Seminars 1. The Future of Schooling (Discussion) Mark Steed, Director, JESS, Dubai Currently there are an estimated 263 million children who are not in education worldwide and this number is increasing annually. The greatest challenge facing education is how we can provide schools for the world’s population. This session looks into the Crystal Ball and makes a number of predictions about the future of schooling drawing on lessons from the growth of the international schools market in the past twenty years and on the development of new technologies. The speaker argues that in the future there will be very distinct versions of schooling: a luxury premium market where pupils are taught in a classroom by a teacher enhanced by new technologies; a medium range market which will consist of blended learning through ‘virtual reality teaching’; and an economy product which will be totally online.

Mark S. Steed spent his career working in top independent schools in the UK before moving to Dubai in September 2015 to take up the reins as the Director of JESS. Mark has a particular interest in how new technologies can be used in education and chaired the UK Independent Schools Council IT Strategy Group from 2007 to 2015. He writes and speaks regularly about education and technology.

2. Middle Leaders as a Catalyst for Change in Schools (Presentation) Facilitated by Marian Rossiter, Head of Secondary, The Edron Academy, Mexico and David Marriott, Headteacher, St Andrew’s International Primary School, Malawi This session will showcase examples of Leadership Challenges that have been undertaken this year by Middle Leaders in COBIS Schools as part of the COBIS Programme for Middle Leaders (CPML). More than 80 Middle Leaders have been taking part in this year-long, blended learning course which has been running in The Netherlands, Mexico, Romania, Malawi, Oman, and Spain this year. This session will give you the chance to hear more about the CPML, while also learning about challenges that Middle Leaders are identifying and addressing in their own schools.

The session will include filmed footage from this year’s CPML cohorts and will be facilitated by Marian Rossiter from The Edron cademy in Mexico and David Marriott from St Andrew’s International Primary School in Malawi.

Virtual Teaching & Learning (Workshop / Supporting Member) Mark Ellis, Head of Professional Development, Twig World Virtual reality is a worldwide phenomenon, but how can you use it in your lessons? Discover the power of virtual technologies in the classroom – how it can support teachers and empower learners by connecting the curriculum to the real world.

Mark Ellis has been Head of Professional Development at Twig World since July 2015. He leads on pedagogy and the design of professional development activities for Twig World, as well as working on resource development, specifically in the area of virtual reality and scientific literacy.

Transforming Learning and Leadership for the Conceptual Age (Workshop) Kai Vacher, Principal, British School Muscat This session will look at creating, establishing and embedding a learning ethos to prepare learners for the Conceptual Age; harnessing the power of student leadership – a paradigm shift in school organisation; unlocking teachers’ creativity and innovation by rethinking professional development.

Kai Vacher has been Principal of British School Muscat for six years. Kai has a passion for and a commitment to the education, wellbeing and development of young people. An experienced school leader, Kai is a progressive and modernising thinker with an open and inclusive style. He has held senior positions in two large schools in the UK and for nine years was Director of Innovation at SSAT, an independent, school improvement organisation based in London.

5. Teacher Supply – Discussion Session (Discussion) Facilitated by Ken Page, Head Teacher, British Embassy School Ankara and Louise Simpson, Head, St Paul’s School, Brazil Following on from the earlier Panel Discussion about Teacher Supply, this discussion session will give participants the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas about how schools can address the challenges surrounding teacher supply including considering the different routes into the profession, working with local staff, recruitment and retention strategies, and more.

This discussion session will be facilitated by Ken Page from British Embassy School Ankara in Turkey and Louise Simpson from St Paul’s School in Brazil.

6. Student Involvement in Staff Appraisal (Presentation) Dr Steffen Sommer, Principal, Doha College Working on the assumption that customer satisfaction is an important indicator of any organisation’s performance, Doha College have developed a scheme which allows students’ input in staff appraisal.

The talk will explore how the idea was born, how staff bought into it, how it was integrated into the staff appraisal system and what the expected outcomes are. Emphasis will be given to the selection of students, fair representations of year groups and training.

Steffen was appointed Principal of Doha College in September 2015. He offers over 23 years of educational experience having led three successful British international schools across Europe. Steffen is currently Vice Chairman of COBIS, and was co-founder of the international division of HMC.

School Transformations – Case Studies (Presentation) Antony Clark, Headmaster, Malvern College; Tim Meunier, Headmaster, Geneva English School; Elena Benito Molina, Chief Executive Officer, King’s Group This session will showcase three case studies from schools or school groups that have undergone significant transformation. Malvern College is a well-established UK independent school which opened its first international campus in 2012. It now has three international campuses in operation in China and Egypt and will shortly be opening in Hong Kong. Geneva English School, founded in 1961, is a well-established and respected Primary School. In September 2017, GES will open a new international secondary school to deliver progressive learning within a state-of-the-art environment. Since the founding of its first school in 1969, King’s Group has grown to include eight schools in the UK, Spain, Panama and Latvia; a language school; a training arm; and has also now become a Multi Academy Trust in the UK. 4. Becoming a World Class School: The High Performance Learning Award (Workshop / Supporting Member) Professor Deborah Eyre, Founder and CEO, High Performance Learning We used to think that only a proportion of students had the ability to be academically successful – but now we know better. In the very best schools everyone achieves highly regardless of their background or starting point and the students are not ‘test passers’ but well-rounded individuals ready to thrive in life beyond school: in university, in the workplace and in an increasingly complex world. It is possible but it’s not easy. To get there you need to understand how to create cognitive success and you need a meticulous approach to making it happen. This talk looks at how to create high performance at the school level and reach the standards needed to gain our prestigious award.

Professor Deborah Eyre is a global educational leader, researcher, writer and influencer focused on helping good schools become world class. A widely published author, she is internationally known for her expertise in how the most able people think and learn. Her new book High Performance Learning: How to Become a World Class School was published in January 2016. From 2010-2014 she was Global Education Director for Nord Anglia Education and prior to that served as Director of the UK Government’s innovative National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY), based at the University of Warwick.

5. Every Child a Learner: Developing Growth Mindset as a Whole School Culture (Workshop / Supporting Member) Katherine Muncaster, Headteacher, Tithe Barn Primary School, and Rising Stars Trainer Children need to be prepared for an ever-changing world. The teaching of mindsets builds resilience, a desire in learning to challenge themselves and encourage others. This workshop will translate an abstract concept into something that is tangible and engaging. It will provide practical classroom activities and strategies to foster the development of a growth mindset and an effective learning culture in your school.

Katherine Muncaster is a Head Teacher of an outstanding school and has been teaching for 17 years.

For the past 10 years she has been researching and developing mindsets in the classroom through the direct teaching of the concept and the development of both classroom and whole school culture. This has led to her creating a whole school approach to embedding mindsets throughout a primary school.

She is the co-author of the book Growth Mindset Lessons – Every Child a Learner with Shirley Clarke.

6. Recruitment, Retention and Career Progression through Strategic Professional Development in International Schools (Presentation / Supporting Member) Dr Hazel Agnew, Director of International Development, University of Buckingham This seminar will examine some of the issues surrounding the recruitment, retention and development of good quality teachers in international schools. It will encourage attendees to be reflective about the efficacy of current recruitment methods and to consider some possible alternative strategies. The session will also look at the retention of teachers and how a programme of professional development can be used to encourage teacher commitment to the school, promote consistency in ‘educational values’ across the workforce, identify potential middle leaders and help those intent on senior leadership prepare for the role.

Dr Hazel Agnew is the Director of International Development for the School of Education at the University of Buckingham. She has wide experience of international schools and is a former Deputy Principal of Rydal Penrhos, North Wales where amongst other duties she was responsible for international student recruitment. In her current role, she has responsibility for the recruitment of international teachers for both initial teacher training and professional development courses. She has instigated a model for international teacher education through the creation of a ‘satellite’ training school in Mexico City which is now in its fifth year and delivers university accredited courses to early years, primary and secondary teachers in both English and Spanish.

COBIS Student Competitions, Awards and Activities COBIS continues to focus on the students at each of our schools and grow our programme for them. It is important that regardless of geographical location, all COBIS students have access to an enriching extra-curricular programme both within their school and beyond the school gates.

COBIS offers a mixture of remote-entry and residential activities for students. This year, students took part remotely in the Primary Creative Challenge, Poetry and Art Competitions and the Young Scientist Film Awards, by uploading their entries to the COBIS website or YouTube. COBIS students have travelled to Spain, Qatar and the UK to take part in residential activities including the Student Leadership Weekend, World Debate Competition, Medical Review Conference, Senior School Music Festival and the COBIS Games (hosted in the UK for the first time this year).

The 2017/2018 academic year will include the addition of a Maths competition and a Global Social Leaders competition as well as the first COBIS Global Social Leaders Catalyst. The GSL Catalyst is a unique leadership programme, taking place at Wellington College International Shanghai, 17-21 December 2017. COBIS Professional Development This year’s COBIS CPD Calendar was wide-ranging – in terms of geography, target audience, and themes. The 2016/17 calendar included conferences and courses for Teachers and TAs, Middle and Senior Leaders, Bursars, Marketing and Admissions Staff, PAs and more, with events taking place in Belgium, Greece, Japan, Malawi, Mexico, Norway, Oman, Portugal, Romania, Spain, The Netherlands, UAE, UK, and USA. For 2017/18 COBIS will be looking to build on the success of sustained courses such as the CPML – including the introduction of a new COBIS Programme for Aspiring Heads – while also looking for increased opportunities for regional courses and sharing expertise between schools. COBIS Programme for Middle Leaders (CPML) In 2016/17, more than 80 Middle Leaders have been taking part in the COBIS Programme for Middle Leaders (CPML). The CPML is a one year programme for ambitious middle leaders who wish to develop their personal and professional skills and who are committed to improving the experience of students within their schools. Through a blended learning approach, with face-to-face workshops, self-directed learning, and a leadership challenge project, the course gives participants the chance to develop their own leadership and make a significant, tangible impact in their schools. COBIS Programme for Aspiring Heads (CPAH) – NEW for 2017/18 Building on the success of the CPML model, COBIS is pleased to announce a new course for 2017/18 – the COBIS Programme for Aspiring Heads (CPAH). The CPAH is a ten-month professional development programme for Aspiring Heads and Senior Leaders at an early stage of their career who are interested in developing their practice. The course will combine face-to-face sessions with a choice of in-school projects and optional school placements. COBIS Diploma for International Teaching Assistants (DITA) The COBIS DITA and COBIS DITA for Early Years launched in February 2016, in partnership with the TA College. These six-month courses, which include e-learning, collection of evidence and written assignments, have been created to provide international Teaching Assistants with the knowledge, skills and understanding to work effectively alongside teachers whilst maximising learning opportunities for children.

To date, 116 Teaching Assistants in 27 countries have enrolled on or completed this course. From September 2017 COBIS and the TA College are delighted to be launching a new leadership programme – The Diploma for International Lead Teaching Assistants (DILTA).
