Work on the bridge connecting Raos and Maliaño began in November 2006. This will greatly improve port operations and will take heavy traffic off Calle Castilla and Calle Marqués de la Hermida, helping to improve the port’s relationship with its immediate neighbours. The new dry bulk terminal, due to go into service during May 2007, will also have a positive impact in this respect by eliminating coal and clinker dust. A further agri-bulk terminal is to be built to improve operational efficiency and environmental conditions. Apart from the effortswhich are being made to improve environmental conditions, contributions have been made by the port in cultural, sports and leisure spheres which have also had a positive impact on the city’s residents. The site of the former fish auction hall has been turned over to sports facilities, a number of regattas have been organised on the Calderón Quay, various exhibitions have been held at the Palacete - one of the city’s most emblematic and central venues, the Cabo Mayor lighthouse has been converted into an Arts Centre and

both the Gamazo Drydock and the Passenger Terminal are being used periodically as venues for concerts and other events. The port’s input in the field of education is also worthy of note through the Aula Rector Jordá courses in collaboration with the University of Cantabria and the UIMP. There has been a particular focus on Iberoamerica, an area of particular importance to world trade where our culture and knowledge are especially relevant.
