Dear Music Lovers, Thirty years ago, our Atlantic Classical Orchestra was born of Andy and Jean McMullan’s passion for music and love of their community. Andy, Stewart Robertson, and I have all taken our turn at piloting our wonderful orchestra through a constantly changing and shifting cultural environment. With the help of a stage full of gifted musicians, a mighty staff, an invested board, and our committed, music-loving patrons, we continue to cultivate and burnish Andy and Jean’s vision of being the jewel of the Treasure Coast, bringing world-class orchestral performances right to your backyard. We’ll celebrate our 30th anniversary — our pearl anniversary — (and Beethoven’s 250th!) with a broad range of compelling music from old favorites to new works destined to become classics. Each program features a work of Beethoven, from his cheeky first symphony to his molten seventh; his Leonore Overture No. 3, and his monumental violin concerto. Joining Beethoven are Wagner, Dvořák, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, and Stravinsky. We’ll also introduce music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon, and by Grammy-nominated guitarist and composer João Luiz. Four extraordinary soloists will be joining the musicians of the ACO: pianist Gabriela Martinez, violinist Elena Urioste, harpist Bridget Kibbey, and bandoneonista Lidia Kaminska. Lidia will be playing tango master Astor Piazzolla’s Concerto for Bandoneon — the Argentinian brother of the concertina and accordion. It is truly a season to celebrate! Though many things have changed over the past three decades, our commitment to excellence has not only endured, but has strengthened. Thanks to your support and patronage, our ACO continues to thrive. We play the music, but you make the ACO. Here’s to another 30 years! Thank you for being a member of our ACO family.

MASTERWORKS I

Variations David Amado, conductor

Gabriela Martinez, piano

We open our 2020 Season celebrating Beethoven with the music of Dvořák, Rachmaninoff and, of course, Beethoven. We begin where Beethoven began, with his first symphony. Still steeped in 18th Century values, it is, nevertheless, plenty naughty — with subversive modulations, playful formal hiccups, and a masterful control of dramatic unfolding—just the seeds that would later grow to become the monumental symphonies. We’ll follow, with the help of brilliant pianist Gabriela Martinez with Rachmaninoff’s ripe, romantic set of variations on a theme of Paganini, and conclude with eight Slavonic Dances of Dvořák—from lyrical to furious, gentle to raucous. It is the perfect way to kick off a year of celebration for the ACO. BEETHOVEN RACHMANINOFF DVOŘÁK

MASTERWORKS ll

Old, New, Borrowed & Blue David Amado, conductor

Elena Urioste, violin

We’ll continue our celebration of Beethoven with his Violin Concerto. A monument of the genre, it rewrote the rules for what a violin concerto could be. Expansive, symphonic in scope, virtuosic, and demanding, it continues to be the Everest of concertos two centuries after it was written. Elena Urioste will bring her trademark blend of virtuosity and probing musical insight, illuminating this masterpiece. Opening our program is a charming work of Jennifer Higdon filled with spirit, good humor, and rhythmic vitality followed by Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, a suite based on the music of baroque composer Pergolesi filtered through the lens of early 20th Century musical values. MASTERWORKS III

Rivers & Mountains David Amado, conductor

Lidia Kaminska, bandoneon

We begin Masterworks lll with the third of four tries Beethoven made writing an overture to his only opera, Fidelio. Leonore Overture No. 3 is the most symphonic of the pack—expansive, dramatic, and moving. We’ll follow with Astor Piazzolla’s Concerto Aconcagua, inspired by the eponymous peak and packed with Argentinian flare, drama, and beauty. It is a rare showpiece for bandoneon and orchestra that virtuoso Lidia Kaminska will bring to a full boil. After intermission is Schumann’s third symphony. Filled with his trademark lyricism, tenderness, heart-onsleeve sentiment, and outsized passion, it is a masterpiece of German Romanticism. BEETHOVEN PIAZZOLLA SCHUMANN

MASTERWORKS IV

Strings Attached David Amado, conductor

Bridget Kibbey, harp

No flowers or chocolates for Mrs. Wagner. Instead, on Christmas of 1870, her husband Richard, gave her music. Rather than the overwhelming scale of so much Wagner (think Ride of the Valkyries), the Siegfried Idyll is intimate, tender, and achingly beautiful. We’ll follow Wagner with another work fostered by a relationship. Composer/guitarist João Luiz and harpist Bridget Kibbey have a long history together, but this concerto is their first foray onto the orchestral stage. João’s music is steeped in Brazilian culture — rhythmically engaging, melodically rich and, like Brazil itself, easy to fall in love with. We’ll close our 30th anniversary season with Beethoven’s rollicking 7th Symphony which Richard Wagner called ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ for its rhythmic obsessiveness and relentless energy. From its expansive first movement to its inexorable second, the witty, unpredictable third, and its high-octane finale, it is a symphony that never lets go and leaves musicians and audience alike elated. ANNUAL BENEFIT CONCERT

Cheers to 30 Years! Featuring Guest Artist Sirena Huang, violin Sirena Huang returns to the Atlantic Classical Orchestra for a 30th Anniversary Celebration. Sirena was last seen on the ACO stage in February 2019 performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Huang garnered sensational reviews from patrons and was praised by the Palm Beach Arts Paper as having “brought to bear not just the technical brilliance [the piece] needs, but the deep interpretive distinction it also requires, but too rarely gets.” Experience up close one of today’s most celebrated young violinists in this exclusive benefit concert. Accompanied by award-winning pianist, Lindsay Garritson, this is an event not to be missed! Special Guest Appearance by world renowned violinist Elmar Olivera in Stuart only.
