Eden Prairie School Board to hear child care proposal at next meeting During its upcoming meeting, the Eden Prairie School Board will consider the future of a school district K-5 child care pilot program.

The pilot program, “Kids EdVenture,” operates in Oak Point Elementary and Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion with an average daily attendance of 252 morning and afternoon enrollees.

Edina-based Southdale YMCA runs childcare in the school district’s other elementary schools, which has approximately 600 students enrolled. It has been running the school district’s school-age childcare program for 30 years, said Southdale YMCA Executive Director Greg Hanks.

“That’s, to me, it’s a community presence,” Hanks said. “That’s what we’re about. Strengthening community.”

If the school board decides to expand the pilot program to all elementary schools, the YMCA program could be out.

The pilot program proposal came in late 2010 from administrators and former Supt. Melissa Krull.

According to a prepared presentation for the Jan. 10 school board meeting, the district is testing its own child care program as an opportunity for Community Education to expand its offerings, ease the transition from the childcare setting to the school setting and create a strong connection between school staff and childcare staff.

The pilot program has been running since fall 2011, and Community Education Director Terri Johnson has been collecting input from those involved with the pilot program.

Hanks likes partnering with the school district in multiple ways. He is cognizant of that as the programs are being reviewed, he said. “Being sensitive to this, a lot of that (pilot) programming is what I would call replication or a lot of what we’re doing,” Hanks said.

Johnson said, “It’s really not in response to, you know, something that the Y was or wasn’t doing.” The district set up its pilot program intentionally, to set high-quality childcare standards, with 28 indicators of success and many

options students can choose from. They include physical activities, homework options, cooking, science, art, music drama and several other activities and subjects.

“We’ve tried to create an inviting environment,” she said, with high quality staff, including some staff members from the school day. She didn’t say how many child care staff members were also school-day staff.

Although school day staff helping with Kids EdVenture may weave a tighter fabric between school and childcare settings, there is value in allowing teachers to focus on teaching and childcare staff to focus on childcare, Hanks said.

The YMCA childcare program offers an array of activities as well, Hanks said, with arts, humanities, science, literacy, character development and physical activity. “So, that’s all the – those are the kind of core components that we use,” Hanks said.

The YMCA also partners with neighboring JCPenney stores where customers can round their total purchase up to the nearest whole dollar. That additional change goes toward the YMCA, Hanks said.

And, the YMCA never refuses anyone based on ability to pay for its program, something a lot of people don’t realize, Hanks said. “So we have financial assistance.”

Last year, it provided $60,000-$70,000 in child care enrollment costs for Eden Prairie alone, and $400,000 throughout the Southdale YMCA service area, comprised of Bloomington, Edina, Richfield, Eden Prairie and parts of Southwest Minneapolis.

“So, those are some things that make us a little unique.” Hanks said.

Johnson said there is a process in place to work with families who need financial assistance in a district-run program “I don’t know that I would get into the details of that at this time, but we would certainly work to meet families’ needs,” she said.

Johnson has surveyed the children, parents and staff involved with the pilot project, and she set up feedback sessions for non-pilot families.

Santorum visited Eden Prairie’s Grace Church Sunday morning, where he talked about how his faith has guided him through difficult times in his life.

He shared his views in a 15-minute question-and-answer session with Grace Church Pastor Troy Dobbs during Sunday morning service. Most of the talk with Dobbs stuck to his personal life and faith, preceding a prayer with Dobbs and attendees before he exited.

When asked about Jesus Christ, Santorum said, “He’s my savior. … He is my role model. He is my teacher.”

He also mentioned what he believes is a special relationship between God and the United States.

“I believe that God has specifically blessed this country.

This country is ‘under God.’ And I say that because it was founded under God,” he said.

God has been his friend, savior and became the “center of my life” through the marriage with his wife Karen Santorum, when he first became a senator, he said.

“A lot of my faith journey has been through fire. Fire of standing up for things that are controversial. … Fire of personal tragedies,” he said.

His faith has helped him get through difficult times, he said, when he lost a son shortly after he was born.

After the service, Santorum shook hands with supporters and churchgoers outside the large Worship Center.

Supporter and Grace Church member Mark Hyde of Burnsville sat with friends, waiting for Santorum to meet attendees after the service.

Hyde said he thought Santorum spoke well. “(There were) more details than just the regular sound bites that you get on the news,” he said.

He said he plans on attending his precinct’s caucus Tuesday and had always liked Santorum, even if he may not receive the GOP nomination.

“Some people in Minnesota, they’re not as interested in his religious background as I am,” he said.

Taste of Eden Prairie returns Feb. 25 29 restaurants expected this year

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Taste of Eden Prairie is back Saturday, Feb. 25, for its tenth year and fifth at the Minnesota Vikings’ practice facility.

The event is the biggest fundraiser for Eden Prairie School District supporter Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools. FEPS, as it’s affectionately known, provides support for teachers and classrooms in the school district.

In the last few years, the event drew approximately 800 people a year. Cochairs Holly Parker and Anne Byrne are hoping the return of Taste classics along with four additional restaurants and new activities will draw an even larger crowd of hungry philanthropists.

There are 29 restaurants on the docket as of early February, up from 25 last year.

New this year are VIP tickets, a live

auction and beefier online and silent auctions.

Benefits of VIP tickets, limited at 50, includes premium parking near the venue, easier check-in and a Vikings locker room tour (6:15 pm and 7 pm).

It also includes a wine and cheese reception before the start of Taste with Interim Supt. Jon McBroom, among other tokens of appreciation.

VIP Tickets can only be purchased online or through a Taste Committee member.

Live auction items will include a Vikings tickets, sideline passes, a framed Vikings jersey, and other items.

“So we’ll have kind of a Vikings experience,” Byrne said. A winter getaway to cabin in northern Minnesota and a chef ’s dinner are items also expected at the live auction.

“That’s’ something kind of new this year. Fun this year,” Byrne said.

Items in the event raffle and online auction are also expanding.

Parker and Byrne said volunteers are still needed for the night. Volunteer shifts are not long, they said, so they can have plenty of time to enjoy what the Taste has to offer. They’ll also get a reduced ticket price.

Volunteers will get $10 off a Taste ticket, which is new this year, Parker said.

Money raised from the tickets, raffle, auctions and other services go toward the Foundation’s cause to help teachers and classrooms.

“This is our biggest fundraiser,” Byrne said.

Did Superman inspire future greatness?

As someone who is tolerant of winter, but not fond of it, the above average warmth and lack of snow so far this season has been quite pleasing.

I don’t plan a winter getaway annually, but I do find that a break from the cold and snow to be quite therapeutic, even during winters such as this one. I spent such a week recently along Alabama’s Gulf coast – Gulf Shores, to be exact.

My mother is retired and spends two months of her winter in Gulf Shores. She leaves after the holiday season and returns in late March. Since it’s an extended vacation, she drives back and forth each year.

She doesn’t like to drive alone, hence the invitation to make the drive most winters. I enjoy an occasional road trip, as well as warmer weather, so it’s an easy sell.

Gulf Shores isn’t exactly the dream vacation destination of most 41-year-olds, but you won’t hear me complain. I find plenty of ways to keep myself occu-

pied among the numerous retirees that populate the coastline, and given how many people I know or have met who haven’t had the luxury of taking a vacation in recent years due to lost jobs and ever-inflating costs of living, I know I’m blessed to be able to take my turns behind the wheel as mom heads south each January.

I see new things with each trip south, but I’d hardly call my Gulf Shores vacations educational. The 2012 Gulf Shores road trip, however, had me pondering a question I can’t answer definitively, although I think I know the answer.

My highway reflections began in Metropolis, Ill., home of the Super Museum. Yep, the town that shares the name with

the fictitious city in the Superman comic books is home to the largest collection of Superman memorabilia you will ever find.

I had heard of the museum, but never considered visiting it until four years ago, when my first Gulf Shores road trip brought me to the southern Illinois city. Although I was never a big Superman fan, I did collect comic books as a youngster, so I was determined to someday visit the museum that pays homage to Clark Kent’s alter ego.

The very short version of the museum’s history: a young boy takes a liking to Superman in the 1960s and makes it his life mission to collect every type of memorabilia imaginable. Today the massive collection is on display in a city that has long celebrated the Man of Steel’s history.

The museum doesn’t exist because Metropolis celebrates the pulp fiction icon, it exists because one man had a passion

for a slice of Americana and has pursued it. Operating the museum is not his life’s work, it is a passion he has made time, and money, available to for decades.

How many people have that kind of passion about anything? How many people get to act upon it? Not enough of us, I suspect.

I enjoyed my museum visit, but didn’t drive away from Metropolis with a newfound enjoyment of Superman’s comic book, television and big screen adventures. I did, however, leave town with a sense of appreciation and awe for one man’s passion and the tourist attraction that exists today because of it.

I didn’t expect the history of Superman to have a profound effect upon me, but I have pondered what is and isn’t most important in my life since that Saturday morning not so long ago. Now I have to figure out how to expunge the kryptonite from my day-to-day existence.

No worries here being single on Valentine’s Day Just so I understand this, we have a day designated for the sole purpose of individuals expressing love to their spouses or significant others, but what about the other 364 days of the year? Are people precluded from expressing these sentiments on any one of these days?

Many people get blue around this day simply because they happen to be single. One blogger said there are two types of single people. There are the ones who watch movies at home “sulking” and “eating ice cream,” but the second group consists of people like me who couldn’t care less.

On that single point I agree, but the rest of this blog was filled with a bunch of nonsense about

how singles can party and get “wasted” at a bar with other singles, suggesting this is the ideal situation in which to be because an “impromptu evening at a bar” is the prefect way to meet somebody new.

Sure, when kids ask how their parents met, they can tell them they found each other stumbling drunk – excuse me, “wasted” – in a bar on Valentine’s Day. Now that is as romantic as it

gets.

This was not meant to be an indictment of bloggers or the socalled experts, as I read a lot of material with similar content, all of which would be obvious to the average person. But now that I find myself on the subject, I will say that most of these people on this issue have little clue as to what they’re talking about.

Since when is being single on Valentine’s Day anything anyone should be ashamed of or pitied?

My apathy for Valentine’s Day is related to the fact I can’t remember the last time I was at all concerned about it, and this applies equally to when I have not been single.

Perhaps I have been fortunate

in having been involved with women who feel the same as I do toward this Hallmark holiday. I am guessing I’m not the only person. There has to be many, many couples that equally see the silliness of worrying about getting the card, the flowers, the candy, and the nice dinner.

Rather than repeat the advice of so-called experts on this subject – who suggest that we focus on the positive, show others that we care, focus on other aspects of life, travel, pamper ourselves, and spend our time on a hobby – I prefer to look at the bigger picture.

Esbensen said the NFL contacted him weeks ago about getting firefighters into the commercial. Esbensen had an assistant fire chief make sure the firefighters were around the station when the film crew arrived, but they didn’t say why, leaving the film

crew and Allen’s appearance in a cowboy hat a surprise.

“They thought it was pretty cool.” Esbensen said. “ They got to meet Jared Allen and got to spend a little time with him. It was all fun.”

The commercial aired during playoff games and toward the beginning of the Super Bowl airing on Sunday.

Hennepin County studies closing service centers Credit card flap prompts closer look at how much is spent to subsidize operations

BY PAUL WAHL – SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s been a month since Hennepin County Service Centers stopped taking Visa credit cards.

County officials say there have been a few hotheads, but for the most part patrons have adapted well.

The move in early January prompted the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners to order a study of the future service centers.

The flap over credit cards at the county’s six service centers arose when a state mandate requiring deputy registrars to charge a fee to cover the costs involved in using plastic, according to Kathy Schons, manager of the service centers.

Visa does not allow for separating its fees from the actual charge in face-toface transactions, so the county settled for Discover and MasterCard, as well as cash and checks, as forms of payment.

Unlike businesses, governmental entities are no longer allowed to eat the expenses of accepting credit cards, Schons said.

“People have generally been understanding,” said Schons, noting that each location has installed an ATM. “We’re asking customers at the reception desk how they plan to pay to head off any problems.”

Credit card users are charged a 2.4 percent processing fee.

The issue was also apparently the impetus for the county board to order a study of the future of the service centers.

The board approved a resolution Jan. 24 calling for a closer look at the centers, which offer more than 40 services.

Among the most popular are driver’s license renewals, motor vehicle tabs, license plates and passports.

“Clearly we need to look at the economic model for this service,” said Hennepin County Sixth District

Commissioner Jan Callison. “This may be something we can no longer afford to provide.”

Callison said the county will subsidize the service centers with $1.6 million from property taxpayers in 2012, a figure she says is probably too high.

She said it was easier for the county to allocate funds to the service centers when state aid was more plentiful.

“This is not something we have to have,” Callison added.

To make matters worse, Callison and others on the county board fear dropping Visa as a method of payment may reduce revenue further, requiring additional subsidy.

The county’s service centers completed approximately 911,000 transactions in 2011, a third of those via credit card and 80 percent of that third with Visa-issued cards.

Callison represents all or parts of Long Lake, Orono, Wayzata, Woodland, Minnetonka, Minnetonka Beach, Deephaven, Tonka Bay, Greenwood, Shorewood, Excelsior, Hopkins, Eden Prairie and Edina.

Commissioner Randy Johnson, who offered the study resolution, represents part of Eden Prairie where a service center was closed in recent weeks.

The resolution maintains the study is needed to answer “important public policy questions concerning the long-term viability of the centers.” It also notes that the portion of fees the county is allowed to retain is often less than the cost of offering state license services.

Callison said that move was expected to save the county roughly a half-million dollars during the fiscal year. The task force commissioned to study the issue will include representatives of the private business community. A report back to commissioners is expected April 16.

In addition to Hennepin County, a number of cities also contract with Driver and Vehicle Services. It is a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Richfield and Brooklyn Park have service centers. Golden Valley had one until it was closed last year amid controversy over accounting procedures. In St. Louis Park, the privately run AAA Minnesota operates a service center.

County centers are located in Brooklyn Center, Maple Grove, Minnetonka and Edina. There are two in Minneapolis.

The state made specific requests to Visa to change its long-standing policy, according to Dawn Olson, Support Services Program Director for Driver and Vehicle Services.

The answer was “no.”

“So we looked at the most reasonable approach,” Olson said. “We just don’t

The exhibit includes details about the Spencer family’s history as well as artifacts from her childhood. Finding childhood mementos from the Althorp Estate was not difficult, according to Grossmark.

“We found them in the attics,” he said. “They didn’t seem to throw a lot away.”

A selection of family photos from her youth depict Diana engaged in average, everyday childhood activities, such as swimming.

Because Diana’s father was an avid shutterbug, Murton and Grossmark had hundreds of photos to choose from for the exhibit. “We were lucky enough to pick albums showing her do things that all children do,”

Murton said.

Memorial books sent to the family, copies of the original draft of her brother’s eulogy and other mementos from her funeral are on display, and the exhibit showcases the charity work Diana participated in, as well as the work that continues in her name.

Diana was known as the people’s princess because she didn’t shy away from the public, a contrast to how the royal family was perceived.

She brought attention to many charities through her work, yet quietly went about many other charitable acts, Murton noted. “She had a love of people,” he said.

“She didn’t put herself up on a pedestal,” Grossmark said.

How would Diana feel about an exhibit that tells the story of her life? She would look at it as an extension of her work, Murton said. “She’d be very very proud to know that her work is still continuing.”

been charged with felony theft by swindle after allegedly using the company credit card to buy power tools and then pawn them for cash.

The following allegations were included in a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

While Tracey Dee Keyes, 34, was working for Arizant, he allegedly used a Home Depot credit card intended for

purchasing work project materials to instead buy $3,958 worth of power tools and home supplies Aug. 16-18, 2011.

The business credit card was in Keyes’ name, and his signature was on the credit card receipts.

Crime levels remain steady in EP Statistics show a dramatic drop in illegal incidents in Richfield

BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS It is a common school of thought that when the economy gets rough, so do the people, that crime goes up when money is scarce, but recent local statistics challenge that notion.

“I think whenever we have a declining economy, I think the worry is, ‘Oh my gosh, the crime rate’s going to go up,’” Jill Mecklenberg, crime prevention specialist for Richfield Police, recently observed.

Recent local and national trends, however, defy such logic, and among the most defiant is Richfield, a community that at first glance would seem more vulnerable during a poor economy than its more affluent neighbors.

While crime rates in Bloomington, Edina and Eden Prairie have remained relatively steady or declined modestly, Richfield has gone on a crime-pinching crash diet, steadily shedding lawbreakers since 2005, according to statistics.

Serious crimes, or Part I crimes — including murder, assault, robbery and criminal sexual conduct — are down 40 percent there since then. They amounted to 1,585 in 2005; in 2011 there were 949 Part I crimes.

Part II crime, the less serious offenses, fell as well, although not as dramatically. It was down 33 percent in that span, from 3,414 to 2,200. The drops occurred as Richfield’s population increased by about 800 residents from 2000 to 2010.

While not to the level of Richfield, violent crime also declined nationally between 2005 and 2010, down about 10 percent. Property crime fell at a similar rate.

Broadly, demographers have pointed to more effective policing, more incarceration, effective social programs and a declining youth population — trends applicable to Richfield, too.

But local law enforcement has a difficult time pointing to just what, exactly has caused the drastic, welcome change in Richfield that defies common wisdom.

“There are just a number of factors that come into play,” Richfield Public Safety Department Chief Barry Fritz said. He pointed to increasingly preva-

lent security cameras and community crime prevention measures in which citizens are taught to keep from becoming victims.

Mecklenberg cited Richfield Ready, a program facilitating the collaboration between police, schools and community education. Teen Police Academy, which teaches middle- and- highschoolers the basics of police work, also has helped to demystify the police department and make children more willing to cooperate with the cops, Mecklenberg said.

And don’t forget about the easy answer to Richfield’s drop in crime, Fritz reminded. “I don’t think I would discount good police work,” he said.

But the trend still begs the question: What happened in 2005? Until then, the numbers in Richfield were up and down. Since, they have declined steadily every year.

The previously fluctuating pattern was similar to what communities such as Bloomington still see. There, Part I crimes have been on a gradual overall decline, but still up and down from year to year. The same goes for Part II crime.

Although not to Richfield’s extent, Bloomington’s statistics also defy the idea that crime goes up during hard times.

Deputy Police Chief Rick Hart noted changes in technology, particularly a car-mounted system that automatically scans license plates in traffic and alerts officers to any plates belonging to a driver with a warrant for arrest out or even expired tabs. Several of the systems have been installed, although not every squad car has one.

Both Fritz and Hart cited better access to data as a new advantage, not just in the field but during planning, as well. It allows police departments to take a “proactive response in targeting emerging crime trends,” Hart said. He did not name a particular type of crime currently under focus.

Reported crime in Edina has been relatively steady since 2005, although 2010 does represent a low for the period, at 930 Part I offenses. Part II crime increased slightly during that span, from 834 to 960.

Eden Prairie did not have data available organized by Part I and II, but person crimes, which also include homicide, sexual assault, robbery and assault, were down slightly since 2005 — from 546 to 410. Property crimes in the city fluctuated but numbered 2,257

in 2010, down eight from 2005.

While the numbers seem encouraging, especially in light of the recent economic climate, improvements do not spread across all pockets of data.

Home burglaries in Richfield were up in 2011, from 107 to 126.

So according to Fritz, the police aren’t twiddling their thumbs. “We still have plenty to do,” he said. Specifically,

traffic patrol has increased.

Mecklenberg hopes declining crime numbers don’t reflect any hesitance on the part of residents to report crime in the first place, and urging Richfield to stay vigilant.

“It’s good news,” she said, “to talk about the declining numbers in crime, but I don’t want them to get complacent.”

Unrestricted corporate political contributions and voter ID initiatives are among the issues addressed by U.S. Representative Keith Ellison on the February edition of “Democratic Visions”. visited Somali refugees in northern Kenya and is working to re-establish their lifelines from Minnesota. The area has been gripped by famine and lawlessness.

BY DANIEL CALLAHAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Even on the temperate California coast, the time between dawn and the sun’s rising still brings with it a perceptible chill to the air. As the sun begins to crest the hills surrounding Camp Pendleton ordinary folks set about their work, one group of Marine Corps recruits are nearing the end of theirs.

In near perfect unison, the recruits march across blacktop to take their places for a ceremony they’ve waited for since they began training more than 50 days earlier.

This morning makes the formal review and graduation a few days hence seem almost a formality. Today is the day they receive a symbol they’ve been accepted.

Accepted into the brotherhood of pride and honor that first drew them to the Marine Corps.

Marines FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Today they receive their eagle, globe and anchor emblem. And the title of United States Marine.

Over the last 50 hours, with less than three full meals and running on fewer hours of sleep than the average afternoon nap, these recruits have hiked up mountains strapped to packs weighing 80 pounds or more.

They’ve worked, sweated, and carried each other along together as a team through nearly 40 kilometers of hikes and up mountains. The capstone on months of training and exercises, the Crucible is known as the make or break moment, an event that leads into the end of their initial training phase. And, the reward that comes with it.

That reward is enormous to a

recruit, who, for most of the last three months, has heard few kind words and even fewer that were not yelled. The drill instructors, who have guided the recruits to this point of success, place the emblem in their hand individually and give them a few quiet words of encouragement and congratulations before addressing the former recruit as Marine.

Not a few eyes are damp as Navy Corpsmen, the medical personnel who work with the corps, walk up and down behind the recruits reminding the exhausted young men not to lock their knees and standing by for those moments when they might be needed. Those who walked onto the blacktop as recruits, exit to a hearty breakfast and a solid rest as Marines.

A few days later, they’ll once again march across a parade ground, but this time it will be as Marines for their final review

before the commanding officers of the recruit depot as well as their families, friends and relatives, many of whom make the trip to San Diego to watch the final graduation.

Those Marines of particular note will be recognized for their work during training There is work yet to be done; after a 10-day leave, they will return to the business of learning what it means to be a Marine through combat training and further education on their designation military occupation specialty. In the story of their transformation, the last chapter comes to a close, while their lives as United States Marines will not conclude.

How much? ”A bunch,” a crewmember radioed after Kloster asked.

A bunch, in Hyland business terms, is 22 million gallons of water.

Millions of gallons of water usually hold Braemar through the season pretty well, regardless of the temperature, Kloster said.

So, there has been snow at Hyland.

People just don’t think to hit the hills when they see brown in their yard, he said, so business from walk-up customers has declined this winter, Kloster said.

Even though walkup business has decreased, Hyland’s programs have kept it financially sound through the season, Kloster said.

Because of the busy winter at the beginning of 2011, the city wasn’t able to do any of its normal maintenance because crew was plowing snow all time, salting and using a lot of fuel, Cracauer said.

ter, offsetting fuel and materials costs.

“So we ended up cost wise [within] our budget,” he said.

Last year, the city couldn’t trim trees or clear sightlines, either. So this fall and winter crews have been able to catch up on all of that, Cracauer said.

They’ve also gotten a head start on equipment maintenance they couldn’t do last year, which will help them going into seasonal work in March and early April.

“So, this year we’re able to catch up on that,” he said. “ … So we’re ahead of the game right at this moment (budgetwise), but who knows what the fall is going to bring.”

She has the best metro-area score on vault (9.8) and ranks second on beam (9.65), third on bars (9.75), fourth in allaround (38.3) and 10th in floor exercise (9.65).

State Alpine ski meet Local skiers are trying to earn trips to the state high school boys and girls Alpine ski meet Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

First run is scheduled for 10 a.m. followed by the second run at 1 p.m.

An awards presentation will be from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Most section Alpine ski meets were held earlier this week.

However, Section 5 Alpine skiers will seek state berths Thursday, Feb. 9, at Buck Hill in Burnsville.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s is competing in this meet.

Bloomington Jefferson, Bloomington Kennedy and Eden Prairie competed in the Section 6 meet Feb. 7 at Buck Hill.

Siblings Jack and Laura Post of Eden Prairie were expected to contend for individual honors in their section races.

Bloomington Jefferson’s Michael Murray was another highly ranked skier seeking the opportunity to ski at Giants Ridge next week.

Nordic skiers head north Area Nordic skiers also hope to head north to Giants Ridge next week. The state boys and girls Nordic ski meet is Thursday, Feb. 16.

The boys and girls 5K freestyle races begin at 10 and 11 a.m. The boys and girls 5K classic races start at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Section 2 competition features 13 schools, including Eden Prairie.

That meet is Thursday, Feb. 9, at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Bloomington Jefferson and St. Louis Park competed in the Section 6 meet Feb. 8 at Elm Creek Park Reserve.

The Eden Prairie swimmer is ranked third in the state in Class AA in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Lieberman has also helped Eden Prairie earn top-five metro area status in all three relay events.

A large group of Eden Prairie High School student-athletes got together Feb. 1 to sign National Letters of Intent with various colleges and universities from across the country.

Sixteen Eden Prairie athletes took part in the 2012 signing day. Many of those athletes were responsible for Eden Prairie’s continued dominance on the Minnesota high school sports scene. The Eagles have won four of the past five Challenge Cup titles in the large-school division. Gopher recruits Jackie Johnson and Shayne Mullaney led the Eagle attack with 24 and 21 points.

Eden Prairie, 16-3 overall, rebounded from that loss to win twice later in the week. The Eagles beat Bloomington Jefferson 65-46 Feb. 2.

Rau hockey success The parents of Kyle and Chad Rau have had a busy winter following the hockey exploits of their sons, both of whom are Eden Prairie High School graduates.

Kyle is a freshman at the University of Minnesota and has 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 27 games.

The winger has helped the Gophers to a 19-9-1 record.

Kyle’s older brother Chad is in the Minnesota Wild organization after starring for Colorado College.

Chad Rau, also a forward, was called up by the Wild in January but has since been sent down to the team’s minor league affiliate in Houston.

Parents Lynne and Mike Rau had the opportunity to watch both of their sons compete locally Jan. 21.

The Rau couple was on hand to see Kyle lead his team to a 2-1 victory over Colorado College in the late afternoon at Mariucci Arena.

Then they rushed over to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul that night to watch Chad score his first NHL goal during the Wild’s 5-2 win over Dallas.

Boys lose twice It is rare when the Eden Prairie boys basketball team loses twice in one week.

But that’s what happened to the Eagles last week against tough competition.

The Eagles encountered second-ranked Hopkins Jan. 31 and lost 76-59.

Sander Mohn and Andre Wallace scored 17 points each for Eden Prairie.

Grant Shaeffer contributed nine points.

Eden Prairie (13-5) was defeated 80-63 by Minnetonka Feb. 3.

Mohn topped Eagle scorers with 20 points. Jordan Peterson finished with 14 points. Wallace and Abrian Carpenter had nine and seven points.

Eden Prairie Nordic skiers prepare for section competition Eden Prairie Nordic skiers were busy competing in high school and Junior Olympic qualifying meets last week.

The Eagles will compete in the Section 2 Nordic meet Thursday, Feb. 9.

The meet was tentatively scheduled for Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis Eden Prairie’s boys and girls squads competed in the Lake Conference sprints meet Jan. 24.

Top four Eagle boys finishers were Henry Zurn, Mitch Stenoien, Nathan Teynor and Ethan Holdahl.

Top four Eden Prairie girls skiers were Hailey Hildahl, Beth Schaepe, Eryn Stewart and Hannah Hoch.

Then on Jan. 25-26, Eden Prairie Nordic skiers participated in the Junior Olympic Qualifier race at Green Acres Recreation Area in Lake Elmo.

SHORTS EP baseball registration Eden Prairie Baseball Association is conducting registration for the 2012 season from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 11, at Sports World in Eden Prairie. Sports World is at 16522 W. 78th St. in the Prairie Village Mall.

Registration is open to players age 4 through 12th grade who live in or go to school in Eden Prairie. Beginning March 1, there will be a $30 late fee for registrations received.

Volleyball festival There will be 604 junior girls volleyball teams from Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin participating in the 22nd annual Presidents Day Festival Saturday, Feb. 18, and Sunday, Feb. 19, at 153 courts throughout the Twin Cities and Rochester.

Competition begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and continues until late Sunday.

Among participating cities are

Andover, Apple Valley, Blaine, Bloomington, Champlin, Coon Rapids, Hopkins, Lakeville, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Rosemount, St. Louis Park and Victoria.

Girls ages 12-18 will compete in the tournament. The event is free to all spectators.

Youth officials banquet The public is invited to the fifth annual Minnesota Youth Officials Kick-Off Banquet Party Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Everett McClay VFW Post 1296, 311 W. 84th St., Bloomington.

Guest speakers from the NFL and Big Ten Conference will appear at the event along with the Viking Cheerleaders. The U.S. Army Youth Football Coach of the Year Award will be presented at the banquet.

Eryn Stewart and Maddy Hanson participated in the high school 5K race.

Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary?

Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end.

The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started.
