Despite objections, schools chief gets new 3-year deal Trio wanted process to precede negotiations

BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS The opposition insisted it was the process that led to their votes against a three-year contract extension for Bloomington School District’s superintendent.

With the same trio opposing the three-year deal that opposed the negotiation process four weeks earlier, the Bloomington Board of Education voted 4-3 to extend Supt. Les Fujitake’s contract during its Oct. 10 meeting.

The contract extension carries an annual salary of $180,000, beginning next summer.

Fujitake will receive a $4,000 increase in his annual salary under the new deal.

Boardmember Mark Hibbs characterized the negotiation as unusual, noting that it was carried out during a board study session rather than in a closed session, per Fujitake’s request. He criticized the timing and execution of the extension, noting that the board was granting the extension more than eight months before the current contract expires.

Practice rounds for roundabouts Residents get ready for 494-169 frontage road intersections

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Minnesota Department of Transportation played caddy for more than 80 people last weekend, helping them prepare for roundabouts that will hit the Interstate 494/Highway 169 interchange frontage roads.

Four of six roundabouts in the highway interchange re-construction are expected to open up before the end of the year.

For some residents, preparation included a practice round using golf carts.

MnDOT used cones and street signs to create a mockup roundabout in the parking lot of Braemar Golf Course in Edina on Saturday, Oct. 15.

After learning about roundabouts indoors, visitors had a chance use a golf cart to drive through the mock roundabout, getting ready for the real thing.

A few of the visitors who took advantage of the golf-cart warm up round were thankful for the opportunity.

“Everybody could use this course,” Dave Jordan of Bloomington said, after

Dave Jordan said the learning session may be intended for older adults, but young people should be taught how to use roundabouts properly, too.

“I think it should be part of driver’s training,” Margit Jordan said.

One of the biggest roundabout hurdles is using two-lane roundabouts, which are not as straight forward as onelane roundabouts.

MnDOT workers and educated visitors from Saturday’s open house said the driver has to know which lane to be in before entering the roundabout. To go straight or right, use the right lane; to go straight, left or to make a U-turn, use the left lane, according to MnDOT.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrests in Bloomington

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A late night traffic stop for an equipment violation in Bloomington resulted in five arrests for suspicion of crack cocaine possession.

The vehicle was stopped on Normandale Boulevard in the early morning hours of Oct. 10, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The driver, a 46-year-old Minneapolis man, was not carrying identification but told the patrol officer that the police were familiar with him, Stehlik

said.

The Minneapolis man was one of five occupants inside the Pontiac G6, which did not appear to be registered to any of the occupants of the vehicle based upon the names they gave to the officer, Stehlik explained.

A 39-year-old Cottage Grove man told the officer the vehicle was from his auto detailing shop and that he had permission to use the vehicle, Stehlik said.

Subsequent investigation determined that was not the case, he noted.

The five occupants were ordered out of

the vehicle for further questioning. Inside the vehicle a bong was found on the floor behind the driver’s seat. Further investigation turned up traces of crack cocaine that had been smashed into the carpeting of the vehicle, Stehlik said.

All five occupants of the vehicle were arrested on suspicion of fifth-degree possession of cocaine, including a 43-year-old White Bear Lake man, who initially gave a false name and had an outstanding warrant.

Student arrested A lost cell phone resulted in a Bloomington Jefferson High School student being arrested and charged with possession of tobacco and second-degree possession of a controlled substance.

The 15-year-old student was arrested Oct. 7, a day after a cell phone was found inside the school. In checking the phone for contact information school officials found messages suggesting a student in the school was in possession of a controlled substance, Stehlik said.

Upon questioning several students whose numbers appeared in the phone school officials identified the 15-year-old boy as the suspect. A check of his backpack found 114 Adderal pills, which is sometimes prescribed as treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Naked mile A 54-year-old Bloomington man was arrested for indecent exposure after midnight Oct. 8 following reports of a naked man running in the vicinity of the Bethany College of Missions campus.

After calling police, residents near the college, 6820 Auto Club Road, found the man hiding on the ground outside a nearby residence and detained him until police arrived. The man, wearing only shoes and a hat, told police “it was a nice night out,” and “he wanted to be more free,” according to Stehlik.

Oct. 7 after attempting to purchase a watch from Ben Bridge Jewelers at Mall of America, according to Stehlik.

The man attempted to establish a line of credit for $10,000 to purchase a watch, but the Texas driver’s license the man produced turned out to be fake, as the license number had too many digits, and the picture on the license appeared to be that of a Hispanic male. The man who filled out the credit application was Asian, Stehlik noted.

The man had left the store while his credit application was being processed.

When the identification appeared to be fake, Bloomington police were called. As an officer was taking the report the suspect called the store to question the status of his application. He was identified inside the mall and arrested.

The suspect was in possession of several cards, including a credit card, with the same name on all of them at the time of his arrest. Although the man initially claimed it was his name, further investigation determined he was giving a false name. He then identified himself by his real name, Stehlik added.

Disabled employees make valuable contributions

BY JUDY LYSNE – GUEST COLUMNIST “Joe has dealt with a list of tasks that has varied by week or day. He is so meticulous that we have him working on computerized machines in the model shop.

Engineers request him specifically to help with assembly projects. The labs are so much more productive than they were one year ago because of Joe’s project help.”

Wouldn’t we all like to be described that way by our colleagues at work? Over the last two years, Joe has become an integral and trusted member of the team. He was hired through a partnership between his employer and Lifeworks Services, a nonprofit in the Twin Cities that links companies to clients with disabilities.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month,

a time devoted to increasing the public’s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Jobs are important to all of us and people with disabilities are no exception.

Lifeworks Services consults with employers to identify their specific production and business needs and then matches Lifeworks clients who are right for the jobs. Because every business is unique, we work closely with the employer to develop a solution that matches its need.

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE have to scratch below the surface of each candidate’s campaign literature to discern the truth this year.

You will hear some candidates complain that spending is out of control when, in fact, the city’s spending has been essentially flat for the past three years and is budgeted to decline in 2012. Bloomington has the lowest property taxes per household of any major city in Hennepin County.

You may read that the city is assuming dangerous levels of debt when, in reality, the city is saving both current and future generations of Bloomington taxpayers money by investing in the maintenance of its infrastructure at a time when unprecedented low interest rates and construction costs will minimize the cost. The city’s fiscal policies are so sound that Bloomington is one of only a handful of cities in the

entire nation with a AAA bond rating from all three rating agencies.

In fact, if your city property taxes increase in 2012, it will be entirely due to the state legislature’s decision to eliminate your Market Value Homestead Credit.

This November, the heirs to Bloomington’s good government tradition are Mayor Gene Winstead, council members Tim Busse (At-Large) and Vern Wilcox (District 4) and former Planning Commission member Jack Baloga (District 3). A vote for these four will assure at least another two years of sound fiscal policy and quality government services.

VOTERS GUIDE Bloomington Board of Education Four people are running for three open seats on the Bloomington Board of Education: incumbent Maureen Bartolotta, Dick Bergstrom, Nelly Korman and Ricardo Oliva. Judy Gruggen withdrew from the race, but her name will remain on the ballot. The term is four years.

Her years of experience have allowed her to understand the inner workings of the district. She is seeking to continue applying her knowledge of the district in shaping the district’s policies.

District funding is among the challenges the board will face in the upcoming term, according to Bartolotta.

“It’s hard to sustain programs if the money isn’t there,” she said.

With state cuts to education funding the board will have to answer a difficult question, she said. “How do we continue to do the good work that we’re doing, but with less in our budget?

“So far we haven’t had that problem,” she noted.

Evaluating programs and reducing expenditures is a recurring challenge for the district. In the past the district has formed a community panel to discuss ideas to reduce expenditures. It’s a discussion the board will consider having again, and one Bartolotta supports.

“Outside eyes can see things we don’t see,” she said.

Not all ideas have to be substantial, she noted. If both high schools can be well served by combining extra-curricular activity teams, thereby reducing the coaching costs within the district, she is favor of such measures. “They’re small, but they can add up to good savings,” she said.

To help sustain the district’s programs the board must continue to purse several partnerships, according to Bartolotta.

In its effort to support early childhood family education, for example, the district received a McKnight Foundation grant for the creation of initiatives to improve literacy, she explained. Grants, partnerships with colleges that provide analysis for the district and community business and nonprofit agency partnerships all play a role in sustaining the district’s programs and services, she said, adding that she supports initiatives to include more members of Bloomington’s senior community in school programs and functions.

Bartolotta is satisfied with the end result of the board’s initiative to redraw the elementary school boundaries and revise its open enrollment policy, saying that 90 percent of families were able to send their children to the school of their choice following the revisions. She praised the volunteer committee that steered the initiative. “They really worked hard to do it fairly,” she said.

The board compromised in implementing changes that are intended to alleviate overcrowding at some schools, she added, saying the approved changes minimized the impact on district families.

processes and found the lack of teamwork among board members, and the disconnect between the board and residents, to be displeasing. When he was asked in December if he was interested in running for the board, he didn’t think he could do any worse. And he welcomes the opportunity to participate in determining the future of the district rather than simply sit back and complain about the end result. “It’s one thing to complain, it’s another to bring a plan,” he said.

As a stay-at-home dad after 17 years of employment, Bergstrom is connected to Bloomington’s schools through his sons. As a board member he is willing to listen and learn before making decisions. “I don’t come with a bucket full of answers,” he said. “I don’t know all the questions.”

If elected Bergstrom is committed to working with his fellow board members even when there’s disagreement about a course of action, he added.

Bergstrom expects to ask many questions in determining the answer to a major question the board will have to answer in the coming year. “How do we do the same with less money?

“You manage your wants and needs.”

When making decisions, Bergstrom will consider the needs of all students in the district, from the high achievers to those who are underperforming, he explained.

The district’s elementary boundary adjustments and open enrollment policy changes “ended up being a politically correct compromise,” according to Bergstrom.

The board backed off from some of its proposed changes as a result of feedback from residents, he said.

Those who he has spoken with have a different analysis of the end result than the district’s opinion, he noted.

He questions what a year of discussions accomplished, and what the boundary changes will lead to.

She has provided interpreting and translating service to the district, worked as a paraprofessional and works as a substitute in the district while raising three children attending Bloomington schools. “I am very sensitive to the issues that affect the education of my children and my students,” she said. “The best way for me to give back is through the field that I know, which is education.

“I am ready to help, I am ready to be a resource to the community.”

Korman sees her experience as a parent and an educator as assets that would benefit the school board. In addition, as an immigrant from Columbia, she would serve as a liaison between the board and the district’s diverse and growing population, she explained.

The district needs to improve its communication, according to Korman. As a board member Korman intends to do that by gathering comments and feedback from both district staff and parents, she said.

“I think the district has done a very good job at trying to keep the budget in good shape,” Korman said.

Finding creative solutions to maintain the district’s programs, as well as assessing programs should the district be forced to make budget cuts, will be challenges Korman anticipates the board will face. In weighing decisions pertaining to budget cuts Korman wants the community involved in deciding where cuts are to be made. Although the focus is on the financial picture when making budget decisions, the board needs to look further into the academic impact of budget decisions, she explained.

Korman considers herself to be a researcher who likes to study options in making the right decisions. As a manager for a statewide bilingual initiative in Columbia, she was responsible for oversight of the pro-

gram budget and its approval, she noted.

Although the district provided opportunities for parents to be involved in redrawing the elementary school boundaries, there should have been more outreach to the community, particularly toward residents who were unfamiliar with how the district operates due to cultural or language barriers, according to Korman. She would have favored further research and more time for discussion and comment before the decision was made, she said.

He participated in the public discussions, realizing, “Instead of just complaining about politics, I wanted to be there.

“I wanted my voice to be heard,” he said. “I grew up here and my kids are growing up here,” he added. “I want to continue the legacy of success that we’ve had.”

The 36-year-old music teacher and business owner, who handles contracts and businesses matters for two bands he performs with, wants to preserve the educational opportunities in Bloomington’s schools. “We need to educate the whole child,” he said. Assessments of success shouldn’t be limited to test scores for math and reading skills, he explained. “There’s a lot more to education and life.”

His top concerns as a board candidate are tied to the district budget and test scores.

Oliva favors budget decisions that preserve programs such as music. “We need to make sure we’re promoting arts,” he said. A well-rounded education is important and he has yet to hear a parent say there’s not a value to arts education or that arts programs should be cut, he explained.

He favors budget reductions that preserve the district’s educational programming, such as cutting at the administrative level, he said. He wants to find ways to preserve and enhance the district’s programs and expects that to be a challenge in the coming years.

The district’s Adequate Yearly Progress score is insufficient in gauging the success of the district, according to Oliva. He is a proponent of analyzing individual student achievement as a measure of the district’s success, noting that students who move to Bloomington during their education may score lower than students who started in the district. Their test results may show they are on the low end in terms of achievement, but that doesn’t necessarily account for progress the student has made, he explained. “We need to promote those things that are showing what we do well,” he said.

Oliva thinks the district changes to neighborhood boundaries and the open enrollment policy were unnecessary. Rejecting open enrollment applications to schools exceeding capacity would have taken care of the problem, he said. He is dissatisfied with the end result of the process and doesn’t see the changes providing the immediate results they were intended to achieve.

Richfield firefighter died on duty in 1955 But there is no public recognition for James Spillane’s sacrifice

BY BILLIE JO RASSAT – SUN NEWSPAPERS The only firefighter that lost his life in the line of duty on behalf of the city of Richfield is not recognized for his sacrifice on the Minnesota State Firefighter Memorial.

On June 16, 1955, volunteer firefighter for the city of Richfield James Spillane, 32, died fighting a fire at 6437 5th Ave. The fire was one of two that night set by an arsonist, according to news articles from the time.

Spillane was taken from his wife, Florence, and two children, 2-year-old Mary O’Rourke and 4-year-old Michael Spillane.

During the fire, Spillane collapsed after suffering from smoke inhalation in the low attic area of the home and was transported to St. Mary’s hospital, but died during transport in the ambulance.

The foundation responded to her post with, “My deepest sympathies to you and your family for your loss. I know that Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch is working hard to get your father the recognition he deserves. I am certain James will be included.”

The statue honors the 193 Minnesota firefighters who have given their lives since 1881. It was moved to the baggage claim area about 20 years ago, from a more public and accessible portion of the airport, said foundation president and Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen.

Now, the foundation would like to “claim a more sacred ground” for a memorial, Esbensen said, which would be more accessible to the public, on a southern portion of the State Capitol property in St. Paul.

A 21-year-old Bloomington man pleaded guilty in federal court to possessing child pornography.

Sean Michael Kratz pleaded guilty Oct. 11 to one count of possession of child pornography. Kratz was indicted on Aug. 2.

In his plea agreement, Kratz admitted that on June 16, 2010, he possessed numerous visual depictions of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct that he obtained and shared via the Internet, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Kratz faces up to 10 years in prison.

His sentencing hearing has yet to be scheduled.

Boardmember Melissa Halvorson Wiklund also cited concerns about the timing of the decision, explaining that the board will be reviewing success measures of the district in coming weeks and that the board was under no deadline to complete a contract extension. “We have time to complete the work we have to do around annual expectations,” she said, adding that she expected to be in the minority in voting against the extension.

Boardmember Tim Culver cited the same concern he raised in September, a lack of goals attached to the terms of the contract. Reading an excerpt of the contract that identified the board’s responsibility to review the superintendent’s performance based on the job description and agreed upon individual objectives, Culver said, “We need to do a better job with this part of the contract.”

Noting that the board wouldn’t discuss specific performance goals in conjunction with the contract extension, he voted against it.

Board Chairman Chuck Walter was the most vocal in his support of the extension, praising the district’s financial stability and how the district is considered a leader in many educational endeavors. “We must be doing something right,” he said.

The district’s success is an extension of Fujitake’s work, according to Walter.

“He’s a leader amongst his peers,” he said.

In the weeks since the board first disagreed on the process for renewing the superintendent’s contract, Walter had not been contacted by anyone suggesting

there is a problem with how the district is conducting its business, he explained.

“I don’t see a problem. I will support this.”

Boardmember Maureen Bartolotta expressed a similar sentiment, noting that comments regarding the superintendent from neighbors, parents and staff members have been complimentary. “I suggest we listen to our constituents,” she said.

The board heard only praise for Fujitake during the meeting, as two residents addressed the board in support of the superintendent.

Betsy Longley, a parent representative on the district’s elementary boundary committee last year, said that the relationship between the board and the superintendent has been seamless from her experience. She cautioned the board against micromanaging, saying a compromise in trust between the board and superintendent would affect all levels of the district.

In what amounted to a state of the district address, Fujitake thanked the district’s parents, committee members and staff for their participation in board and district businesses and pledged to uphold the district’s reputation. “We are seen as educational leaders,” he said.

Upholding that reputation – which includes outstanding academic achievement and academic programming such as early childhood education and gifted and talented programs – will require continued participation by district officials and volunteers, he noted. “The leader also needs a team to get the work done,” he noted.

The contract extension included minor amendments to the language of the existing contract, addressing arbitration parameters should Fujitake’s contract be terminated for cause and clarifying the terms pertaining to severance pay.

Fujitake, hired as superintendent in 2006, had previously served as the district’s executive director of finance for 11 years.

Honor Flights pay tribute to World War II veterans

BY SUE WEBBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Larry Martin enlisted in the U.S. Navy nine days after he turned 17, and he served for three years, nine months and 20 days – from April 18, 1944 to Feb. 7, 1948.

Sixty-three years after his discharge - on Oct. 8, 2011 – Martin was in a group of 100 World War II veterans who faced throngs of people in two cities cheering the service they gave to their country.

veterans was chosen for a one-day, whirlwind Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II Memorial and other monuments.

For vets leaving Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on a charter flight Oct. 8, it was a day of laughter and tears, a time to connect with other veterans and to be honored.

“It was wonderful, very impressive,” said Martin, 84, a resident of Golden Valley. “It’s a day I’ll never forget.”

2005 and since then has transported an estimated 50,000 veterans from across the U.S. to Washington, D.C., for a day, free of charge. The nonprofit organization now has 96 hubs in 40 states.

As of July 2011, Honor Flight Twin Cities has taken 500 metro area World War II men and women veterans to the nation’s capital.

Veterans are invited to apply for the Honor Flights. Martin was on the list for two years before he was notified last spring that he had been selected.

“The people were by far the most impressive part of the day,” Martin said.

“When we landed in Washington, there were 100 to 150 people there to meet us, thanking us for saving our country.

When we came back home that night, there were another 100 to 150 people at the Twin Cities Airport clapping and cheering us on.”

Sixty-two guardians, each of whom paid $500 to accompany the veterans on the trip, were on the chartered Sun Country flight that day. Larry Martin and Wally Fuller, 84, of White Bear Lake, were escorted by Fuller’s daughter Jan Smallidge.

“Larry helped me push my dad’s wheelchair that day,” said Smallidge, a Circle Pines resident who is a licensed social worker at Life Fountain Home Health Care.

Fuller was on the USS California in the Battle of the South Pacific Ocean and in Japan after the war ended.

Martin was on the USS President Adams APA 19 and the USS Hooper, stationed in the Pacific Ocean. He was involved in the invasion of the Lingoyan Gulf and others.

After boarding the flight about 5 a.m., the vets were served coffee and rolls and later sandwiches and beverages. A box lunch was served at noon, and then a buffet dinner in the evening, before the flight back to the Twin Cities.

When the vets arrived in D.C., a ground crew that volunteered to be their tour guides was waiting to escort them to festive red, white and blue shuttle buses that were well stocked with refreshments.

“People clapped as they got off the plane,” Smallidge said.

Then it was full speed ahead to the tour. Highlights included the playing of “Taps” at the World War II Memorial, and a wreath ceremony at the

Minnesota Pillar.

On the return trip, the group sang the hymns of their various branches of the service. The flight touched down in the Twin Cities about 11 p.m. and was greeted by ROTC students and military personnel, a band, coffee and cookies.

Along with the military people saluting the veterans as they deplaned in the Twin Cities were family members and friends that the vets didn’t know would be on hand for the return trip.

Big band music was played near the baggage claim in their honor as they arrived.

Anne Janda of Bloomington, campus director of Village Shores senior community in Richfield, was another of the guardians on the Oct. 8 flight. It was her third trip on an Honor Flight.

“It was just great,” she said. “I keep applying to be a guardian. Every time I get home, I make another application.

It’s incredible. It’s so well organized, just as smooth as it can be. The camaraderie is delightful. The veterans start off the trip not knowing each other, and it turns out to be just delightful to be in their company.”

Veterans who make the trip are told not to bring a thing. The Veterans Administration supplies wheelchairs and oxygen; a doctor and several nurses are aboard the flight.

Each flight also has a videographer who takes photos of the group and the memorials and later provides a DVD and CD for each of the veterans.

“When they get off the plane, you can’t understand how exciting it is,” Janda said. “I really enjoy seeing the surprise on the veterans’ faces when they first get off the plane and see the crowd of people applauding and the kids holding posters of thanks. There are people in Washington who go to meet those flights every weekend. It’s just so moving.”

Janda said she also enjoys hearing the veterans’ stories during the 20-hour excursions.

“I just cannot say enough about the Honor Flights,” Janda said. “It’s a great history lesson. It’s a great human lesson.

It’s the most humbling thing I’ve ever done. It’s an honor to be involved.”

Juried art exhibition opens next week The 35th annual Members’ Juried Art Exhibition opens next week at the Inez Greenberg Gallery in Bloomington.

The exhibition features original artwork by members of Bloomington Theatre and Art Center from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Artwork included in the exhibition will be juried Lyndel King. King is the

director and chief curator of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, a position she has held for more than 30 years.

2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown.

The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces.

Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients.

3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown.

Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside.

Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs.

Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process.

The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. The salary will be paid in twenty-for (24) equal installments during the contract year, and directs the Chair and Clerk to sign the Modification of Contract. Bonifacius. When the suspect vehicle was pulled over, a SLMPD officer noticed what appeared to be recent damage to the vehicle. After performing field sobriety tests, Bammert was placed under arrested and transported to SLMPD headquarters.

Bammert consented to a BCA urine test, the results of which are pending.

Loaded volleyball section The Bloomington Jefferson, Lakeville South, Lakeville North and Eagan volleyball teams have at least a couple of things in common. All are in the top five of the state Class 3A rankings, and all will be chasing the Section 3 championship later this month.

Eagan, Lakeville South, Lakeville North and Jefferson held the top four spots in the South Suburban Conference standings going into this week’s play. Eagan had clinched at least a share of the league title and could win it outright with a victory over Lakeville South on Oct. 18.

Jefferson lost to Eagan in an SSC match but defeated the Wildcats at the Eagle Invitational in Apple Valley. The Jaguars lost to Lakeville North in a tournament in Marshall and swept the defending state champion Panthers in an Oct. 6 conference match.

Jefferson lost to Lakeville South in an SSC match Oct. 4.

The Section 3 playoffs begin Wednesday, Oct. 26, although Jefferson is likely to receive a bye until the quarterfinal round Friday, Oct. 28.

Football playoffs The postseason for Kennedy’s and Jefferson’s football teams begins Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Both teams are in Class 5A, Section 3. Despite its 2-5 record going into this week’s action, Kennedy had a good chance of opening the playoffs at home if the Eagles could beat Apple Valley in their final regular-season game Oct. 19. Jefferson (1-6) probably is looking at a first-round road game.

Rosemount and Prior Lake, both 5-2 last week, were battling for the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. Rosemount had the tiebreaker advantage because of its 13-6 victory over Prior Lake on Sept.

16.

Other teams in Section 3 are Burnsville (2-5), Eastview (2-5) and Apple Valley (1-6).

This is the last year Bloomington’s high schools will play in the largest football class for the foreseeable future. In 2012 a new class (6A) will consist of the state’s 32 largest programs. Jefferson and Kennedy will play in Class 5A, Section 3, with Apple Valley, Farmington, Minneapolis Southwest and St. Louis Park.

Kennedy upsets state-ranked Jefferson in volleyball Victory over crosstown rival follows first league win in more than 4 years

BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Kennedy volleyball coach Kevin Nelson is getting the program back where he left it six years ago, and the Eagles are producing memorable victories.

There was no magical moment greater than the one last week when the Eagles upset district rival Jefferson, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A at the time.

Fans can barely remember Kennedy’s last victory over Jefferson in 2006. They will remember the first time Kennedy engraved its name on the Bloomington Battle trophy, which now goes to the winner of the volleyball rivalry.

A week earlier, Kennedy earned its

first conference victory in 4 1/2 years, defeating Prior Lake 3-1. The Eagles also finished seventh at the 32-team St. Michael-Albertville Invitational.

The surge came after Kennedy tried some different lineups. For example, junior setter Christy Boelter, who had recently been moved up from the junior varsity, came through with 37 set assists against Jefferson.

The Eagles were led by senior middle hitter Karin Bull with 14 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. Senior right-side hitter Heather Bachman had 12 kills, seven blocks and three ace serves. Senior outside hitter Alaina Brown had a seasonhigh nine service aces to go with 29 digs and eight kills.

The Jefferson junior has 10 points (seven goals, three assists) for Team Northeast in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, a fall league for top hockey prospects.

Notebook: Jaguars reach boys soccer section final

BY DAVE PEDERSEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS For the fourth consecutive season, Bloomington Jefferson’s boys soccer team advanced to the Section 2AA championship game against Eden Prairie.

The game was played Oct. 18, after this issue went to press. Jefferson, ranked fourth in the state, has won the last three section championships. The Jefferson-Eden Prairie winner advances to the state tournament that begins next week.

Jefferson opened the section tourney with a 9-0 blowout of Chanhassen Oct. 13. Goalies Will Elfstrum and Matt Yost split time and shared the shutout.

Scoring two goals each in the first half were Tyler Anderson and Tyler Tumberg. Mitch Velgersdyk and Charlie Leslie scored in the second half. Charlie Fitch and T.J. LaDuke scored their first career varsity goals in the second half. LaDuke added another goal before the final horn sounded.

Elfstrum earned the shutout in a 30 section semifinal victory over Prior Lake Oct. 15. Anderson, Yasin Kayad and Yannick Van Graas scored.

Jefferson’s girls soccer team ended its season with a 1-0 loss to Prior Lake in the first round of the Section 2AA tournament.

Cross country honors Jefferson senior Jan Ketterson finished second overall at the South Suburban Conference cross country meet last Thursday to earn all-conference honors.

All-conference honorable mention went to senior Joni Weatherhead and sophomore Matt Rosen, both of whom placed 29th in their races.

Volleyball beats No. 1 The No. 7-ranked Jefferson volleyball team rebounded from a loss to district rival Kennedy by topping thenNo. 1 Blaine in the third-place match at last weekend’s Eastview tournament.

Jefferson also defeated Richfield and Hopkins, while losing to Eden Prairie. The Jaguars were 20-6 with one regulars-season match remaining against Apple Valley Oct. 18.

Blaine, which lost its first two matches of the season at the Eastview tourney, dropped to third in this week’s Class 3A ranking. Lakeville South replaced the Bengals in the top spot.

Bloomington teams fall in South Suburban football Bloomington’s high school football teams had a rough time of it Oct. 14, with Kennedy losing to Lakeville North 35-7 at Bloomington Stadium and Jefferson falling 28-6 at Apple Valley.

Apple Valley won for the first time after opening the season with six consecutive losses. Jefferson lost its sixth in a row following a season-opening victory over Burnsville.

Jefferson junior Sidney Tikalsky scored his first varsity touchdown on a 1-yard run in the second quarter against Apple Valley. That tied the score 6-6, but it was Apple Valley’s game from there.

Apple Valley scored a touchdown to regain the lead in the second quarter and added two more scores in the third.

Lakeville North quarterback Trey Heid put on a show against Kennedy at Bloomington Stadium, throwing four touchdown passes and running for one score. The Panthers (7-0 overall, 6-0 conference) clinched at least a share of the South Suburban Conference championship.

Kennedy (2-5, 2-4) avoided the shutout when Lexis Jones scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter. It was Jones’ teamleading seventh touchdown of the season.

Kennedy went to Apple Valley for its

final regular-season game Oct. 19, after this edition went to press. Jefferson played host to Eastview (2-5) at Bloomington Stadium.

Both Bloomington teams will play Class 5A, Section 3 quarterfinal games at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. Section pairings were to be determined Thursday, Oct. 20.

Jaguars recognized Bloomington Jefferson High School’s football program received a WCCO-TV Community Spotlight Award for its work with the Wounded Warrior Project.

The team received a $500 check from the law firm of Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum and Carey. The money will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists soldiers who were injured during service.

In 2010, the Jefferson football program raised $1,600 for the project.

Jefferson was recognized by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association for its service work.

Because of Jefferson’s example, raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project now is being done throughout the South Suburban Conference.

This is Nelson’s first year back as head coach since leaving in 2005 to get a masters degree. He was varsity coach from 1999 to 2005, taking a struggling Eagle program and helping it become a contender in the Lake Conference.

Nelson has been working as the program’s ninth-grade coach, where he said he enjoyed the challenge. When the head varsity position opened this year, Nelson was asked to come back. He said it was not an easy decision, but it helped when Jen Bowman said she would stay on as the varsity assistant.

“The talent has been there,” said Nelson about the current Eagle team that has 10 seniors on varsity. “More than anything, this team had to figure out mentally how to win. As soon as they won against Prior Lake, they got rid of the mental blocks and realized they could play. The pieces started to fall in place.”

Despite losing the first game against Jefferson 25-23, Nelson said he felt good about it because his players hung in there the whole game and he could see the confidence building.

Bull has been a factor on offense at 6foot-3. Nelson said Bull always has been athletic, but is starting to put it all together as a dangerous hitter and blocker.

“We are winning because we all work together so well,” said Bull. “Against Jefferson we fed off each other’s energy and kept saying we could do this. Our seniors really wanted it because we were sick of losing to Jefferson.”

After losing the first game at Prior Lake, Nelson put in Boelter at setter.

Boelter had 36 set assists in the next three games, leading both teams for the match.

Bachman provided nine kills and 25 digs.

Bull added six kills and 20 digs. Brown had 22 kills as well as 36 digs, a match high for both teams.

Kennedy defeated some standout teams at the STMA tourney Oct. 7-8. In the Eagles’ two-set victory over Coon Rapids, Brown powered the offense with 10 kills on 14 attempts. Bull had a career-high nine blocks. Bachman had eight kills, eight digs and two blocks.

Next came a three-set victory over Waconia, one of the top teams in the Wright County Conference. Bull led the team with 11 kills, 11 digs and five blocks.

Brown contributed nine kills and 11 digs and Boelter had 25 assists.

After losing to Andover and TotinoGrace in close matches, Kennedy defeated Hopkins in three sets for seventh place.

Against Grace, Bull led with 12 kills, eight digs and seven blocks. Boelter added 25 assists.

Bull led the offense against Hopkins with 10 kills and five blocks and was named to the all-tournament team. Brown added six kills and five service aces.

One Kennedy had not had many winning seasons recently is its competition.

The Eagles play some of the top teams in the state in their conference and section.

Nelson said having Chaska and Eden Prairie leave Kennedy’s section is a relief.

That doesn’t mean the Eagles will have an easy time in the postseason. They will play in the Class 3A, Section 3 playoffs, which feature the top two teams (Lakeville South and Eagan) in this week’s state rankings as well as fifthranked Lakeville North and seventhranked Jefferson.

With its victory over Jefferson, Kennedy improved to 12-13 with playoffs starting next week. Nelson said the Eagles should have every reason to be optimistic.

“If we can beat a team like Jefferson,” Nelson said, “there is no reason why we can’t beat anybody.”

Jefferson High School’s girls swimming team will celebrate its last home meet for Jaguar seniors with a “Pack the Pool Night” Thursday, Oct. 27, when the Jaguars compete against Burnsville in a South Suburban Conference meet.

Diving will take place at 5 p.m. at Oak Grove Middle School. Swimming action begins at 6 p.m. at Olson Middle School.

All fans wearing Jefferson school colors will be admitted free to the meet.

There will be a light buffet for swimmers and fans at the conclusion of the meet.

Winter skating lessons The Bloomington Ice Garden Skate

School is accepting registrations for the winter session of ice skating lessons.

Winter session classes start the week of Oct. 25. Lessons are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
