Golden K Club donates $60,000 to charity before last meeting Sept. 27 BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A group of charitable Edina retirees have written their last check. The Kiwanis Golden K Club of Edina gave approximately $60,000 in grants and scholarships to area organizations and youth this year, clearing its foundation bank account. Club President Jim Bentley said the service organization would hold its last meeting at the end of this month. “We’re retired and getting older and older and dropping off with no new members coming in,” Bentley, an Edina resident, said of the decision to disband after 27 years. Amy Senser of Edina named as driver in fatal hit-and-run BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The wife of former Vikings tight end Joe Senser has been named as the driver in a fatal hit-and-run accident. An attorney for the Edina family said Friday afternoon, Sept. 2, that Amy Senser was driving the vehicle that struck and killed Anousone Phanthavong, 38, of Roseville last month. “There have been many complex and overlapping issues involved in the investigation of this case which have made it inappropriate to release the name of the driver until this time,” said Eric Nelson of Halberg Criminal Defense in the written statement. Media reports the day prior revealed that the vehicle involved in the accident was registered to Joe Senser, but at the time, Nelson would not identify which family member was driving. The Sensers also have four daughters. “Now that various legal matters have been clarified regarding a potential criminal case and civil lawsuit, it is now appropriate to disclose that the driver in this incident was Ms. Amy Senser,” Nelson said. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, it appears Phanthavong was putting gas in his vehicle late Tuesday night, Aug. 23, on an Interstate 94 offramp to Riverside Avenue in Minneapolis when he was hit. Based on evidence left at the scene, the patrol

identified the fleeing vehicle as a late model Mercedes SUV. The Senser family retained lawyers the next day to coordinate discussion with law enforcement and provide information, Nelson said. According to a search warrant filed Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Hennepin County District Court, at 10:33 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, an attorney for the Senser family contacted the Minnesota State Patrol regarding the vehicle involved in the incident. A trooper responded to the residence in Edina where a 2009 Mercedes Amy Senser ML350 was located in the garage. According to the affidavit, the trooper noted damage to the front passenger side and fender, and what appeared to be blood on the hood. The vehicle was towed directly to the Hennepin County Crime Lab in Minneapolis. Items found in the vehicle included a bobby pin, earrings and a bottle cap from a Mike’s beverage. Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske said Friday afternoon, SENSER: TO PAGE 10

Fresh off a back-to-school open house, Karen Bergman said she has her first challenge at Countryside Elementary School in Edina. As the new principal, she’s aiming to learn the names of all approximately 585 students. “You have to make a connection with each one of the kids,” she said Friday, Sept. 2, the last Friday before the new school year began. “I’ve probably got about 10 or 15 right now where I could put a face with a name, but it’ll get better. I can get pretty close.” Bergman replaces Julie Hatzung, who retired this spring after 10 years at Countryside. She comes to Edina following 23 years in the Farmington School District, where she was a fourth- and fifthgrade teacher for 12 years before serving as the director of curriculum and instruction, and later a principal at two of its elementary schools. She began her career as an elementary teacher in her hometown of Brookings, S.D. Bergman said the Farmington School District was going through a period of transition when the opening in Edina appeared. She said she applied for a new challenge and to be part of a wonderful school district. The Sun-Current spoke with Bergman Friday, Sept. 2, about her new role in the Edina School District. Q: What was your first experience at Countryside like? A: I was actually in the building a couple of school days after having been

named principal. I had a chance to meet some staff and was part of a student assembly the last day of school. I was introduced to the Countryside kids, which was awesome. It was kind of a strange week because earlier that week was our last day of school at Akin Road in Farmington. It was probably one of the saddest days standing before those 700 students and saying goodbye to Karen Bergman them after all those years of being there, but the next day was the exact opposite. It was such a highlight just to see the kids and to know that this was going to be my new home. Q: What have you learned about the district and Countryside so far? A: What a tremendous place. The district as a whole is one of the very best in the state of Minnesota and internationally known. It’s a great honor to be a part of this staff and what I have learned about the Countryside staff, Countryside students and the families that we serve is that they truly are representative of this great district. The people have been so welcoming and so good with telling me about this great place. The level of achievement that our BERGMAN: TO NEXT PAGE

Bergman FROM PREVIOUS PAGE students have reached across the board over many, many years really truly speaks to that level of commitment by our staff. It’s almost overwhelming to think of all these wonderful things that they’re doing. Our kids are truly a product of that hard work of the staff and the families that are sending us their kids. Q: Why did you enter education, and why are you a principal now? A: My grandmother was in education. My grandfather was in education. In thinking about where I wanted to go to school and what I wanted to be doing, that was always a piece to the puzzle. I guess there was never any question. I walked through the door at St. Cloud State my

Our kids could use your support! freshman year saying I’m going to be an elementary school teacher. I was and it was the right decision. After having been in a district-wide position... I’m back to where I needed to be and that’s with kids. One of the things I missed the most about being director of curriculum was the fact that I didn’t have a connection with particular families and kids every day. That’s the piece that I get to do now. Q: What are you most looking forward to this school year? A: Yesterday was one of the most awesome days since coming to the building officially in July. We had kids in the building yesterday. They came for our back-toschool event and it just felt so right for them to be here. You work, and prepare, and you make lists, and you meet with people, and you plan, and do all of these things to get ready for kids and when they walked

through the door yesterday all was right with the world because that’s why you do it. As a building principal you just know once they walk through the door we’re off and running and doing what we need to be doing. That’s what I’m looking forward to. Q: What do you want people to know about you? A: My husband Rick and I spend our time at home and in our personal lives supporting the dreams of our kids. We have 20-year-old twin boys. One is a chef and culinary student at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. The other is in the professional golf management program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. I feel so lucky to support them and know that they’re following their dreams. I feel very blessed to be able to do that, and I feel really blessed to do that in my professional life too.

Times change, education changes with it I was one of those odd children who couldn’t wait for school to begin each fall. There is only so much laying in the grass and reading you can do before boredom sets in. The alternative, of course, was having to mow that dang lawn. We had acres of it. An informal survey I have conducted the past few weeks asking school children about the return of school days confirmed that children today have much the same feeling. Most are excited to get back into the routine of classes, studying and friends. Heavy emphasis on friends. Education today, it seems, has a thriving social component. While children may text each other, talk via Facebook or phone, there seems to be a connection that only face-toface interaction can provide. A lot of people today wring

LETTERS TO THE E DITOR Too much smoke near 50th, France To the editor: Does Edina think smoke is good for business? I recently had a dental appointment at 50th and France. Afterward, I intended to do some shopping in the area and perhaps have lunch. The smoke swirling around the area was just too much for me to tolerate, so I cut my visit short. Is this smoke caused by the new restaurants that have moved in? I’ll certainly think twice before making any plans for a shopping or dining excursion or even to take in a movie at 50th and France. their hands and fret about “what the world is coming to” with today’s generation of children who are nothing like we were at the same age. I’m not in that camp. I have looked over to the other side and liked what I saw. Today’s children are sharp cookies. They are informed, caring young people who face the world with a different sort of outlook than we did. Yeah there are a handful you’d like to take out behind the woodshed and spank, but for the most part, the children I interact with are impressive. During a school year, I usu-

ally have a couple opportunities to spend time with high schoolers. All I can say is I’m glad I will not have to compete against any of them for a job. Their natural affinity for technology puts them lightyears ahead of those in their 30s or 40s – much less their 50s. Although technology clearly isn’t the be-all and end-all, it’s difficult to downplay the importance of mastering electronic communication. I also spent time with a class of middle-school students last year who were among the most impressive I’ve met. I was introduced to the material they were learning as a freshman in college. If you are one of those who has doubts about what our future holds based on today’s youth, I would encourage you to get out of your bunker and

engage in first-hand observation. Most schools welcome volunteers with open arms. If you have something to offer, they’ll find a place for you. Make it your goal to get to know at least a handful of young people this school year, whether through your schools, churches or a nonprofit. Go with an open mind. Be prepared for a noise level that may be foreign to you. Allow for individuality. Smile. After your adventure, let me know what you think. If you still find you have to bash education and today’s youth in general, you will at least have a basis and perspective for your conclusions. Here’s wishing all students everywhere, as well as their teachers, a productive and fruitful school year.

Mosaics bridging art, transportation in Edina Bicycle mosaics on York Avenue bridge make debut during Fall into the Arts Festival Sept. 10 BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Edina Public Art Committee will unveil a special tribute to bicyclists 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, during the Edina Fall into the Arts Festival. Bicycle mosaics several years in the making will be unveiled on the York Avenue bridge over the Edina Promenade. Installation of the mosaics was a joint project of the Edina Art Center Board committee and the Bike Edina Task Force. “The bicycle is a beautiful form of transportation and it’s fun to see them in a mosaic medium,” Kirk Johnson, a

member of the task force, said. “I think that they are very positive images of healthy living.” The endeavor began in 2007 as the city’s Comprehensive Bicycle Transportation Plan took shape. The consulting firm hired by the city to work on the plan brought in experts from St. Paul-based Mosaic on a Stick to lead the project at open houses. Before and after those community meetings in City Hall, people selected tile pieces and glued them on mesh patterns in the lobby. The mosaics-inprogress were also added to at the 2007 Edina Bike Rodeo. Johnson said the bicycle enthusiasts who participated wanted to create bicycle-themed art to increase awareness of Edina’s progressive, bicyclefriendly city. For the last few years, the mosaics were stored while the city sought the money and agreements necessary to

Notes FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Cleaners are once again sponsoring the Coats for Kids campaign, and this year’s goal is to collect 10,000 coats for needy children and families in the area. The public can donate new and gently used children’s coats at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners throughout the metro area during the collection period, which runs Monday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Oct. 8.

Schools can also organize their own collections for the campaign. The school that collects the most coats will get a Subway party. Pilgrim Cleaners will clean all used coats collected. Then the new and used coats will be donated to eight charities: Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. EDUCATION NOTES Edina couple donates $5M to university An Edina couple recently gave Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., one of its largest gifts ever. Fritz and Glenda Corrigan of Edina matched the $5 million donation of another couple to help the university break ground on a new $11.5 million health sciences center. The four-story, 48,000-square-foot building will be called

Senser the Glenda K. Corrigan Health Sciences Center, and will contain chemistry, biology and physics labs, two undergraduate research labs, four nursing simulation labs, classrooms for nursing, athletic training, the sciences and mathematics, and faculty offices. Glenda Corrigan is a 1964 Dakota Wesleyan graduate with a passion for education. She taught high school for seven years and raised three children. Husband Fritz Corrigan, a 1964 Dartmouth College graduate, worked at

Cargill for 38 years before retiring as its executive vice president to become the founding CEO and president of The Mosaic Company, a large global producer of phosphate and potash fertilizers. “We worked hard for more than 40 years together building businesses for Cargill and jobs for thousands of people. America’s free enterprise system gave us that opportunity,” he said. “Along the way we saved enough to be able to give back now to the institutions that helped us get started.”

Women With Low Thyroid FREE SEMINAR Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00pm Do you suffer from any of these LOW THYROID symptoms?

Dr. Phil Gilman, Thyroid Researcher

• Fatigue • Weight gain • Mood changes/Depression • Sluggish thinking • Cold hands, feet or all over • Hair loss, or thinning hair

❏ What mechanism causes 70% of hypothyroidism in the U.S.… ❏ Why you are taking Thyroid Medications but still feel lousy ❏ The 6 different patterns of thyroid problems ❏ What lab tests are needed to identify your problem ❏ Natural solutions to improve your low thyroid problems Tuesday, September 13th 7:00 pm Hampton Inn, 7740 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE Chiropractor Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating is limited Call Seminar registration at 651-681-8199. If line is busy, KEEP CALLING.

FROM PAGE 2 Sept. 2, investigators had not yet spoken with Amy Senser. At press time, an arrest had not been made and no charges had been filed. “Her identifying herself as the driver is a small step in the right direction but there are still a number of unanswered questions we need to determine answers to complete the investigation,” among them why no one came forward until a week and a half after the crash, Roeske said. “We’re still working on it and will continue to investigate until all of our questions are answered and the county attorney is satisfied with the identification of the driver and the circumstances surrounding the crash,” he said. According to media reports, an attorney for Phanthavong’s family planned to file a civil suit after the Labor Day holiday seeking monetary damages against the Senser family. Phanthavong was head chef at True Thai restaurant in Minneapolis. Nelson said the Senser family “extends their deepest sympathies to all those affected” and is requesting privacy at this time.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 PM at the Hampton Inn, 7740 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Emcee for the 3 p.m. ceremonies will be Ramona Dohman, former Maple Grove police chief and current Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner. The keynote speaker will be Michael Murphy, ambulance supervisor at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, and Dayton is tentatively scheduled to speak at the ceremony. Eden Prairie Mayor Nancy TyraLukens and Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen will also speak, and state legislators and U.S. Congressional representatives from Minnesota have also been invited. A band and a soloist with piano and bugle accompanists are also expected to perform. There will be several honor and color guards representing fire, police and EMS at the ceremony. A bell ceremony will honor fallen comrades — a fire department tradition. Grace Church has a high capacity and plenty of property, so Kline and Springer are hoping for a large turnout. They hope for a few thousand, but their turnout optimism speaks for their dedication. “I’d love to see 10,000 people out here that day,” Springer said. “Oh, we’d love it,” Kline said.

2011-2012 season is already set – so people can plan to attend the events that interest them. Minneapolis author Faith Sullivan will kick off this season with “The Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame. “I chose what is considered a children’s book, which is ‘The Wind in the Willows,’ but I don’t consider it exclusively a children’s book because it deals with a lot of adult thoughts,” said Sullivan, author of three novels set in the fictional town of Harvester, Minn. – “The Cape Ann,” “The Empress of One” and “What a Woman

Must Do.” Sullivan said she reads the story about four animals – Rat, Mole, Toad and Badger – once or twice a year. The book follows them as they attempt to persuade Toad from following his various whims and schemes. “He’s always going overboard in his enthusiasms,” she said. “They have in some regards a sophisticated view of the world. They aren’t too judgmental, but they do get upset with him.” She said she’s looking forward to hearing what others think of the classic. BOOK CLUB: TO NEXT PAGE

Arts FROM PAGE 7 install them. The final assembly, grouting and installation was possible through a grant from the Peggy Kelly Family Fund through the Edina Community Foundation. Edina Park and Recreation Director John Keprios said Public Works Director Wayne Houle was instrumental in securing approval from Hennepin County to place the mosaics on the county bridge. “These are not only beautiful works of public art in the park system that enhance the public’s park experience, but I’d like to think that they also promote the effort to encourage more people to ride bicycles and make Edina a more bicycle-friendly community,”

Keprios said. Lois Ring, chair of the Edina Public Art Committee, encouraged visitors at the festival to venture over on the Edina Promenade walking and biking trail to check them out. “These art works will bring beautiful artistic life to the new concrete walls. This project has the true spirit of community participation, which is a major component of what public art is all about,” she said. The ninth-annual Edina Fall into the Arts Festival is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Ave. S., in Edina. More than 200 artists representing a wide range of media, from sculpture to jewelry and photography, are expected to show their works. For more information, visit fallintotheartsfestival.com.

INVESTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE IS SOMETHING WE SIMPLY HAVE TO DO. But with soaring deficits we have to do it right. Rep. Erik Paulsen wants to change course — changing the way we budget infrastructure projects by taking the complete life-cycle costs into account and building to last. It can save hundreds of millions of dollars, and it puts taxpayers first.

Two Edina Boy Scouts recently received the Eagle Scout Award. Ben Fogg and T.J. Barden are members of Troop 3175 sponsored by the Lake Nokomis Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Above, Ben, a Valley View Middle School student, helped improve Creek Valley Park in Edina by adding a new retaining wall and garden around the park sign, a new park bench and rain garden with 23 trees. He received help from his family, students from Creek Valley Elementary School and around 50 members of the church for a total of 301 hours community service. At right, T.J., a South View Middle School student, helped put together comfort packages for Marine Parents, which sends them to soldiers in the Middle East. Working with local grocery stores and their customers, T.J. received enough donations to fill more than 200 packages. T.J. arranged to have Edina Lions Club, Kid’s Club at Concord Elementary School and members of his church write letters of appreciation to the troops, which were delivered with the packages. The Churches of Christ are part of a unity and “back to the Bible” movement that has roots in the Reformation. This movement gained momentum in the United States in the early 1800s. It is often referred to as the “Restoration Movement” because of the desire to restore qualities and characteristics of the church described in the New Testament. Since the focus of the early church was on the life, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and coming of Jesus Christ; it is ours as well.

Kiwanis FROM PAGE 1 1984 as part of Kiwanis International, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to serving children. The Golden K group is for retired men and women. Kiwanis also has groups for youth, young adults and working professionals. For decades they have met weekly for morning coffee and a presentation from a speaker, often representatives of the nonprofits they support. In a typical year, the group raised and distributed close to $20,000, Bentley said. Its major fundraiser was an annual spring concert. It also sold coloring books in the winter and peanuts in the fall. Recipients have ranged from food shelves such as VEAP and Second

Harvest Heartland, to the Edina Crime Prevention Fund and the Salvation Army. Four $2,000 scholarships were given to Edina High School seniors annually, as well as support to children and teen clinics and shelters, Toys for Tots and other youth causes. “Our main goal is to work with children of the world to make a better life for them, said Bentley, a retired electrical engineer and Golden K member for 10 years. “We have contributed money to various charities, mostly local, who work with children. Among the approximately 40 organizations to receive money this year was the Edina Family Center, which provides preschool, childcare and parent education as part of Edina Public School’s Community Education Services. Coordinator Laurie Denn said while financial contributions from Kiwanis over the years have been a big

help, the men also had a great personal impact. “We have really treasured the Grandpa’s Corner relationship in particular, Denn said. From 2000 to 2006, Kiwanis members visited the Edina Family Center’s preschool classrooms to read to the young students. “Through Grandpa’s Corner, our children were introduced not only to additional literacy experiences, but also to older members of our community who cared about them, Denn said. “We are sad to see the end of such an amazing organization but will always remember Grandpa’s Corner. Gordie Holm, club treasurer and foundation board member, said with a dwindling membership, it’s been difficult to continue such programs and attract speakers. When Holm of Plymouth joined the group in 2003 after moving from Omaha, Neb., there were

29

about 85 members. At its height, the Kiwanis Golden K Club of Edina had about 125. Now there are 17 members with an average age of 83, he said. “It’s sad and it’s kind of a mark of our times, said Holm, a retired director of operations in telecommunications, who at 77 is one of the youngest members. “People are not joining organizations like this anymore. Edina Mayor Jim Hovland will speak at the group’s final meeting 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5730 Grove St., in Edina. He said it’s sad to see the club come to an end. “They’re those unsung kind of heroes doing things behind the scenes to help the community, he said. “They only had one goal in mind and that was to make Edina a better place to live and they’ve done their share over the years.

Hornets make mistakes, but beat Andover 21-14 Head coach Reed Boltmann of the Edina High football team said he wasn’t thrilled with the Hornets’ performance in a 21-14 season-opening win Sept. 1 at Andover. However, he was pleased with the result. “We kind of muddled through it,” said Boltmann. “We had eight offensive penalties and four turnovers, including a blocked punt that gave Andover a touchdown. If we can control our penalties and turnovers, we will get better.” There was nothing wrong with Edina’s defense. The Hornets forced two turnovers. “One of our goals every game is to get at least three turnovers, so we fell one short,” said Boltmann. “Other goals are no running play over 15 yards and no passing play over 25 yards. Andover had only one run over 15 yards and no pass plays over 25 yards.” Andover held a 14-8 lead at halftime before the Hornets came on strong in the second half. Junior quarterback Mark Handberg passed 14 yards to junior wide receiver

HISTORY LESSON The Edina High girls tennis team is undefeated at 5-0 in its quest to win a 15th consecutive state Class AA championship.

Marley Allison for the only Edina touchdown of the first half. Handberg and senior tri-captain Nick Rallis hooked up on a 70-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to put Edina ahead 15-14. Then the Hornets iced the game in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard scoring run by senior halfback John Bryan. “Andover’s front seven on defense is very tough,” said Boltmann. “Mark [Handberg] made some very good reads, and he made some indecisive reads. Overall, it was a good first game for him.” Boltmann added that the touchdown pass from Handberg to Rallis was the play of the day. “Nick wrestled the ball away from a defender,” he said. “And then he outran Andover’s cornerback and safety.” Next for the Hornets is a non-conference game with Minneapolis Southwest at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Edina’s Kuhlman Field. “Southwest runs the spread offense,” said Boltmann. “When we played them last season, they had a good quarterback who could make plays. This is a rivalry game for them. They are playing for respect.”

Annalise Colton The Edina High graduate, now swimming for the University of Minnesota women’s team, recently competed at the U.S. Senior Nationals in Palo Alto, Calif. She swam a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 100-meter butterfly. The Olympic Trials will be in June 2012 in Omaha, Neb.

Mark Handberg Edina High’s junior football quarterback passed for 137 yards and two touchdowns in his varsity debut as the Hornets won 21-14 at Andover.

Deborah Janey The Edina woman, 60, won the 60-69 women’s age group in the Minnesota State Fair Milk Run 5K race Aug. 28 in St. Paul. Her time was 24 minutes, 23 seconds.

John Mertes Mertes, who played football at Edina High School as a linebacker and defensive end, has found a new position at Grinnell College in Iowa. Mertes has made the varsity squad as a safety. Grinnell had a 6-4 record last season.

Robert Tyler Tyler, 38, of Edina placed third in the men’s 35-39 age group at the Minnesota State Fair Milk Run 5K race Aug. 28 in St. Paul. His time was 19 minutes, 36 seconds.

Hornet tennis team looks forward to meet at Mayo Edina starts the season with 5 consecutive wins BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High girls tennis coach Steve Paulsen has seen the Hornets roll to five consecutive wins to open the 2011 season. In other words, it’s business as usual for Edina, which has won the last 14 state Class AA team championships. The Hornets will put their winning streak on the line in the Rochester Mayo tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. Mayo could be one of only a handful of Minnesota teams mentioned as contenders for Edina’s title. “We played Mayo Aug. 24 and won 6-1, but they were missing four girls from the lineup,” said Paulsen. In its only match last week, Edina shut out Shakopee 7-0. The highlight of the match was a straight-set victory for

Edina’s second doubles team, eighth-graders Hannah Hankinson and Katie Engelking. “Hannah and Katie are two of the girls competing in third doubles,” said Paulsen. “We’re still working on doubles.” Mackenzie Marinovich and Julia Povilaitis won at first doubles against Shakopee while Morgan Marinovich and Meghan Herring won at No. 2 doubles. Edina’s ever-ready singles lineup swept all four matches with Caroline Ward at No. 1, Meghana Vasireddy at No. 2, Maddie Boyer at No. 3 and Kelly Reger at No. 4. Going into the season, Paulsen knew his lineup was strong at the top. Ward and Vasireddy were both ranked among the top five in the state in singles, and nothing has happened to change that. Vasireddy played No. 1 singles most of last season. Ward has played No. 1 this season. Having two state title contenders in singles is nothing new for Paulsen, who has

“Maddie has always done well off the baseline. This fall she’s moving toward the net more.” Reger, a ninth-grader, is on her way to becoming a state-caliber singles player even though a recent injury has slowed her down.

“Kelly is playing with a sore hand, but she’s a fighter,” said Paulsen. “She can’t hit a twohand backhand, so she has been hitting a one-hand backhand slice. The fact she is playing through the injury shows her competitive side.”

Will Burke paces Edina boys cross country team BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Alumni breakout Three Edina alumni runners break to the head of the pack during the recent Ed Hendrickson varsity-alumni cross country scrimmage at Pamela Park. They are, from left, Aldis Inde (2011), Evan Olson (2009) and Dom Rosario (2008). Junior Will Burke is the only returnee from last year’s state-qualifying Edina High boys cross country team. But even with heavy graduation losses, Edina is ranked fifth in the state Class AA coaches’ poll at the start of the 2011 season. “I am very pleased with the progress our young guys have made since last season,” said head coach Jamie Kirkpatrick. “Will had a great summer of training. He goes into the season ranked 12th in state. A realistic goal for him would be to finish in the top 10 at state. A stretch goal would be top five.” Burke has already earned two all-conference cross country medals and was Edina’s No. 2 runner last season. Sophomore twins Matt and Luke Lumbar are advancing quickly. They are the brothers of former Edina All-State runner T.C. Lumbar. “They have the right genetics,” said Kirkpatrick. Senior captains David Fogg, Zach Gilfix

and Elliot Stoltz provide leadership along with another senior, Jerus Campbell. Juniors competing for varsity spots are Austin Barr, Peter Knoll and Kyle Staunton. Edina has an ambitious schedule, including several big invitationals. Wayzata, which won the state Class AA title last fall, is Edina’s main rival in the Lake Conference. The two teams alternated in the No. 1 spot in last year’s state rankings. Normally, Edina and Wayzata are fierce rivals on the course, but they will share a bus for a trip to a Sept. 10 invitational meet in Ames, Iowa. “That meet brings together some of the best teams from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska,” said Kirkpatrick. During Kirkpatrick’s coaching career at Edina, the team has always built toward a peak effort in the section and state meets. Stillwater and Wayzata are ranked first and second in the initial state poll. For now, Kirkpatrick said he is satisfied to have the Hornets in the top five.

Hornet boys soccer team plays to 0-0 tie with Jags Goals are hard to come by during this series BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS When Edina High plays Bloomington Jefferson in boys soccer, it is traditionally a low-scoring match. Early in the 2010 season, the teams fought to a 0-0 tie. The result was identical when they played Sept. 1 at Edina’s Braemar Park. “Jefferson might have had the better of the play last year, but I thought we had the better of it this year,” said Edina head coach Dave Jenson. Goalkeeper Nathan Rousey kept Edina in the match and made a big save in overtime to preserve the tie. “We had our best scoring chance with about 20 seconds left in overtime,” said Jenson. “Jens Undlin beat about six of their guys, but the Jefferson keeper made an unbelievable save off his toe.” Jenson praised Edina’s defense.

Our kids could use your support! BECOME AN EDINA ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB MEMBER TODAY! For over 30 years, we have contributed to Edina Sports Excellence!

“Nathan has allowed only two goals in the first four games,” said Jenson. “He has grown into that spot. Senior John Lagorio is very solid in the back along with junior Alex Van Gorp. “Captain Stephen Johnson and junior Arin Arpinar ate playing exceptionally well in the midfield.” The Hornets are off to a 3-0-1 start after going 15-2-2 last season. Jenson said he likes his team’s demeanor as well as its will to win. “Jens [Undlin] is our offensive leader, but the scoring has been spread around pretty well,” said the Hornet coach. “Jens scored two goals in our 3-1 win over Cretin-Derham Hall and scored an unassisted goal in our 4-1 victory over Prior Lake.” Next for the Hornet boys is a non-conference match with Breck School at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Edina’s Kuhlman Field. The Hornets will open Lake Conference play against Eden Prairie at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Kuhlman Field.

L AKE NOTES Hornet girls cage Jags Matches against Jefferson are a good barometer for the Edina High girls soccer team because the Jaguars are always a ranked team. With that in mind, Hornet head coach Simon Whitehead was pumped up after his team beat Jefferson Sept. 1 at Braemar Park. “This is a good result,” said Whitehead. “It was tense for about 10 minutes in the second half after Jefferson closed the gap to 3-2 on two set-piece goals. But we got a goal from Lara Boman on a rebound to extend the lead to 4-2.” Earlier in the match, Edina built a 3-0 lead on goals by Hailey Merrill, Vivian Engen and Brittany Bingham. Merrill’s goal was her third header goal of the season and Engen’s goal came with one second remaining in the first half. The Hornets entered this week’s play with a 4-0-0 record.

ESPN respects Lake How strong is Lake Conference football this fall? Ask the staff at ESPN HS, the network’s high school sports magazine.

The ESPN publication ranks all five Lake teams among the state’s top seven with Eden Prairie No. 1, Wayzata No. 2, Hopkins No. 4, Minnetonka No. 5 and Edina No. 7. The only other schools in the top seven are Cretin-Derham Hall at No. 3 and St. Thomas Academy at No. 6.

Preseason All-State ESPN HS recognizes individuals as well as teams, and once again the Lake Conference tops the charts. Five Lake players are on ESPN’s preseason Minnesota All-State team. They are Eden Prairie running back Andrew Larson, Eden Prairie offensive tackle Nick Davidson, Hopkins wide receiver Andre McDonald, Minnetonka safety Charles Webb Edina linebacker Nick Rallis.

Inde wins alumni race Aldis Inde, a 2011 Edina High graduate, was the winner in the annual Hornet varsity-alumni cross country scrimmage at Pamela Park. Alumni Dominic Rosario (Class of 2008) finished second. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

Summer Painting Specials! Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals

Rightway • • • •

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to September 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.
