Название «Преображенская улица» впервые встречается в 1823 г. (некоторые исследователи относят первое упоминание к 1817 г.). Если отталкиваться от второй даты, — ровно сто лет улица носила это имя, а затем началась полоса бурных переименований, ярко отражающих историю ХХ века. Улица поочередно называлась: Л. Троцкого, 10-летия Красной Армии, Короля Михая, Красной Армии, Советской Армии. В 1994 г. улице возвращено исконное название «Преображенская». В первые годы строительства Одессы город был разделен на части. Первая часть — справа от Троицкой, вторая — слева. Выше, за Преображенской, третья часть. Преображенская отделяла третью часть от первой и второй, играя важную роль в территориально-административном устройстве города. Нумерацию «наоборот» (чётная-нечётная стороны) одесские легенды объясняют просьбой суеверного купца, давшего изрядную мзду, чтобы дом его не был под несчастливым 13 номером. Но улица оформилась ещё до нумерации, вместо номера дома тогда называли фамилию владельца (дом фон Тома, дом Аргудинского). Преображенская — самая длинная улица центра, улица шумная, торговая, непредсказуемая и загадочная. Начинается дворцами от моря, а заканчивается двухэтажными зданиями и Привозом. Где бы ты ни жил — во дворце ли, в хибарке — Привоза тебе никак не миновать. Раньше Преображенская упиралась в ворота Старого христианского кладбища. В 1930-е кладбище снесли, на этом месте разбили парк. Все связано на этой улице. Начинается она с первого в мире памятника взятке «Апельсину, который спас Одессу» (скульптор А. Токарев, 2004. Как известно, четыре тысячи плодов померанца смягчили сердце Павла I, и он возобновил финансирование молодого города). Заканчивается же Преображенская Привозом, на котором апельсинами торгуют. Правда, памятник числится не на Преображенской, а на бульва4

The name of the Preobrazhenskaya street was firstly used in 1823 (some researchers refer to 1817). Relying on the the second date, this name had been used exactly for 100 years, followed by a range of vigorous renamings reflecting the events of the 20th century. The street was named in turn: Trotskogo, 10-letiya Krasnoy Armii, Korolya Mikhaya, Krasnoy Armii, Sovetskoy Armii. In 1994 the original street name was returned. At the beginning of the city-planning, Odessa was divided into several districts. Its first part is on the right hand from Troitskaya street, the second part is on the left hand. The third part was located on the upper level, beyond Preobrazhenskaya St. The street separated the third part of the city from its first and second parts, playing the important role in the areal and administrative arrangement of the city.

Odessa legends explain this “reverse” house numbering (the sides with even and odd house numbers) by request of some superstitious merchant, who gave a generous reward to avoid living in the house with the evil number 13. But the street had been arranged before the houses were given their numbers, so while naming one house people used to call its owners’ surname instead of the number (fon Tom’s house, Argudinskiy House, etc.).

Preobrazhenskaya St is the longest street of the city center, full of noise and trading, nonpredictable, and mysterious. It starts from the palaces on the coast and ends with two-story buildings and Privoz. Wherever you lived, in a palace or in a hub, you would not be able to miss Privoz. Previously Preobrazhenskaya St faced the Old Christian cemetery. In 1930th this cemetery was levelled and a park was laid out on Ул. Преображенская. Вид с птичьего полёта. 1900-е гг. that place.

Everything on this street is interrelated.

It starts from the first monument in this world, built in memory of a bribe “An Orange that saved Odessa” (by a sculptor A. Tokarev, 2004). As it is known, four thousand oranges touched the Pavel I’s heart, and he resumed financing of the young city). And its ending takes place at Privoz, where the oranges are being sold. As a matter of a fact, this monument is registered not on Preobrazhenskaya St, but on Zhvanetskogo Boulevard, but who cares about such details in Odessa! In the second block of the street there is Count M. Tolstoy’s house, not far from Sobornaya Square, where Monument to M.Vorontsov was erected by

Babel was studying, who made our city famous by his “The Odessa Tales”, and near Privoz there is a house, where the composer М. Tabachnikov lived — an author of the songs “Аh, Odessa, a pearl by the sea”, “There is a city which I see in my dreams”, “Odessa port.”

And what beautiful women lived here! A beauty from Greece, Ariadna Papudova, who turned Rotshield baron’s head, a silent movie star Vera Holodnaya, who turned every head in Russia. “Your fingers smell like incense, and sorrow rests on your lashes”, — these are the words from the A.Vertinskiy’s song dedicated to her. In our times not so long ago a little old lady in the neverchanging green turban carried buckets of food for homeless cats and dogs in the City Garden. Few people know that young Tatyana Tsiklopulo during the German invasion period saved a lot of Jewish people, redeeming them and keeping them in her house, captivating people’s hearts by her beauty.

In 1920 you could buy here anything you wanted, just like in Greece, from tea to parquet flooring, from shoes to a small hat; you could stay in a confectionery, pub, restaurant, visit cinemas; you could get cure in nine different treatment clinics or to get your own photo — there were lots of photographers. In 1910 some of them approached the city administrator with the letter, pleading to stop issuing accreditations for establishing new photo studios: “Making photos we eke out a livelihood with our families, because there are too many of us in Odessa, especially on Preobrazhenskaya street with all its poor folk, who doesn’t apply for 5

Козачинского «Зеленый фургон» Красавчик и Володя Патрикеев, рассуждая о футболистах: «ибо нет на свете таких болтунов, сплетников и фантазеров, как любители футбола». Чуть ли не со времен возникновения футбола болельщики встречаются на «фанатке» (место на Соборной площади, где собираются исключительно мужчины, недоступное для дам, и напоминающее этим английские клубы начала девятнадцатого века). С 1912 г. весело бежали по всей длине Преображенской трамвайные вагончики, заменившие неспешную конку линии «Привозная площадь — Софиевская». Проезд без пересадки стоил 5 копеек, с пересадкой — 6, для офицеров и военных врачей — 4 копейки. А ночные гуляки, возвращавшиеся домой до 7 утра, платили по ночному, сниженному тарифу, всего 3 копейки. В 1928 г. проезд по трамвайной линии № 2 «Ул. Троцкого» по маршруту: Привоз, ул. Троцкого, Короленко, Нарышкинский спуск до сквера, стоил 4,5 коп. Были на Преображенской и стоянки легковых извозчиков, просуществовавшие до середины 1920-х гг. Немного статистики. В 1912 г. на Преображенской жили 98 врачей — зубных, по женским и детским болезням, хирургов, глазных, венерологов, акушерок. Защищали интересы праведных и не очень жителей города пять присяжных поверенных и два частных присяжных поверенных (то есть семь адвокатов). Жили здесь два архитектора и четыре инженера. А спустя всего восемь лет, в 1924 г., только 14 врачей — терапевты, хирурги, офтальмологи, венерологи и один бактериолог. Но адвокатов (членов коллегии защитников) по-прежнему было семь. Всем известно, что произошло на Дерибасовской угол Ришельевской. А что было на углах Преображенской в 1910-е гг.? На углу Преображенской и Дерибасовской — иллюзион Ляшенко, книжный магазин И. Ш. photography often. New photostudios will not provide any income and only worsen our sufferings”. This tradition was kept — in 1960 on Sovetskoy Armii street there were only three “Odessaphoto” fabrics, simply speaking — photo ateliers.

The heroes of A. Kozachinckiy’s novel “Green van” were walking along Preobrazhenskaya street: a Beau and Volodya Patrikeev were discoursing of football players: “because there are no such babblers, tale tellers, and fantasizers, like football fans”. Just about the times when football was invented its fans meet on “fanatka” (a meeting place at Sobornaya square, available only for men and closed for ladies, what made it similar to English clubs at the beginning of the nineteenth century).

Since 1912 along the whole extend of the Preobrazhenskaya the tramcars have started their way, replacing a horse tram way “Privoznaya square — Sofievskaya”. The cost of non-stop travel was 5 kopecks, with a transfer was 6, for officers and medical officers was 4 kopecks. The night birds on their way back home before 7 a. m. paid not more than 3 kopecks due to the night reduced rate.

In 1928 a transit along the tram line No. 2 “Trotskogo st.” on the route: Privoz, Trotskogo St, Korolenko St, Narychynskiy descent down to the square garden, was about 4,5 kopecks.

«Зеркало жизни» — Чичерина угол Троцкого. Во время Второй мировой войны улица пострадала, основная часть разрушений пришлась на отрезок между Успенским собором и Привозом. Дома № 33, 49, 51, 53, 57–61, 67 были возведены в 1950–70-е гг. Сохранились фотографии, сделанные на улице Советской армии 10 апреля 1944 г., в день освобождения Одессы.

Let’s take a look at some stastistics. In 1912 98 doctors lived on the Preobrazhenskaya St including dentists, gynecologists and pediatricians, surgeons, eye doctors, venereologists, midwives. The interests of righteous and not really righteous citizens were protected by five attorneys by law and two private attorneys (which makes seven advocates in total). Two architects and four engineers also lived there. And eight years after, in 1924, only 14 doctors left — physicians, surgeons, ophthalmologists, venereologists and one bacteriologist. But there were still seven attorneys (bar members).

Everybody knows what happened at the corner of Deribasovskaya and Rishelievskaya streets. And what was happening at the corners of the Preobrazhenskaya in 1910s?

At Preobrazhenskaya/Deribasovskaya corner there was Lyashenko’s cinema, the book store owned by I. Glazer, and Raspopov’s private library. At the corner of Grecheskaya St there was Dr Poryvaev’s infirmary, at the corner of Kondratenko (Politseiskaya) St was Chichilnik’s book shop, of Zhukovskogo St — a book shop owned by М. Karsh, of Evreyskaya St — a New Theatre built in 1873. At the corner of Troitskaya St there were the book shop by V. Kibiner and Ch. Korol, of Uspenskaya St — “Olimp” cinema and a book shop owned by L. Brkovich, of Bolshaya Arnaustkaya St — М. Sharapan’s book shop, of Staroportofrankovskaya St — D. Legkovoda’s book shop.

There were a lot of interesting things at the corner of Trotskogo St in 1920s, mainly the cinemas. “Express” was at the corner of Lasal and Trotskogo streets, Rakovskiy‘s Cinema — at the corner of Trotskogo and Libknekhta, “Lira” — Trotskogo and Chicherina streets, “Zerkalo zhizni” — Chicherina and Trotskogo streets.

During the WWII the street was hit badly. The main damages were given to the part between Holy Dormition Cathdral and Privoz. The buildings of Nos. 33, 49, 51, 53, 57–61, 67 were constructed in 1950–70s. The photos of Sovetskoy Armii street on the 10th of April 1944, which is the Odessa Liberation Day were preserved.

How Odessa citizens saw their city from the 19th till the beginning of the 20th centuries? There are three portraits of Preobrazhenskaya street.

1869, “Odesskaya starina (Odessa’s old times)”: “Preobrazhenskaya street is the longest street in the whole city: starting from the coast line and leaning the gates of the municipal cemetery (which comprises the Christians from all the countries and confessions), contains 15 large and small blocks. In the first block from the sea there is an orphan school. Nowadays it is an adequately maintained orphanage for boys, where they can get elementary education, and talented pupils are able to get upper secondary and higher degrees. In the second block in the house, currently known as a Medical Board, which previously belonged to the artillery commander G. Shostak, the Commander-In-Chief, count N. Kamenskiy, who came here from Moldavian army, fell ill and died in 1811 (May, 4). Shostak was his teacher in the Cadet Corps.

В 3-м квартале — дом с небольшим двором купца Вагнера, бывший некогда благоустроенной гостиницею «Европейскою», теперь принадлежит составу университета, который помещает в нем квартиры профессоров, заведующих кабинетами некоторых учебных коллекций. Далее — Соборная, обширная и плохо содержимая площадь. Среди нее стоит бронзовый монумент светлейшему князю М. С. Воронцову работы Мюнхенского художника Бруггера, поставленный в 1863 г. In the third block there is a house with a small yard, which was owned by a merchant Vagner. Before that, this house contained a well-equipped hotel “Evropeiskaya” and nowadays it belongs to the University and includes the apartments for professors, study room officers, and rooms of some educational collections.

The following is Sobornaya square — a broad and poorly maintained square. In its center there is the bronze monument to his Highness Prince M. Vorontsov performed by the artist Brugger from Munich and established in 1863. The kind-hearted prince is presented in the great-coat over the frockcoat of Narva pultan, the one that was in his command during the Bazardzhik’s taking, and with Field-Marshal’s batoon in his arm. <...> Let’s go further and we will see that a round stone wall, which was dismantled long time ago, has been replaced by uneven ground with piled firewoods near the cathedral church. At the time of its establishment in 1795 this church was named after Nicholas the Saint. In 1804 it was reconstructed in a crosswise manner by the engineer-colonel Gluhov, and with the matter of time it was dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior<...> On the opposite to Sobosnaya Square side there is a huge house of М. Karamarev, a merchant, who was one of the oldest residents in Odessa. He was free from accusation in being greedy providing the money for church constructing in those disctricts where it was in great necessity.

At the next block there is a building of the city police and fire watchtower. The ground floor of the outbuilding includes a city printing house, originating from 1814 when it was established by a person named Seits.

With the matter of time it was enhanced by the inspector P. Frantsev, so the cleanness of the books printed in Odessa significantly differed from the books made in other regions. Moreover the newspapers also appeared in this printing house.

Крамарева, одного из давних старожилов Одесских, оправдавшего скупость свою дачею денег на построение церкви там, где в ней жители крайне нуждались. Следующий квартал вмещает здание городской полиции с наблюдательною для пожаров каланчою. В нижнем этаже пристройки к этому дому помещалась городская типография, которой начало восходит до 1814 г., когда ее завел некто Сейц, после улучшил смотритель П. Ф. Францев, так что одесские книги по чистоте резко отличались от других провинциальных. Здесь же выходили в свет Одесские газеты. Первая газета, печатавшаяся здесь в 1820 г., была однако не для русских жителей, а для приезжих иностранцев Messager de la Russia meridionale; русская же — «Одесский вестник» — явилась восьмью годами позже, но зато удовлетворительнее и долговечнее. <...> Гораздо позже возникли газеты: французская, немецкая, еврейская… Прямо против полиции, на площадке (у неизящного домища купца Папудова, где теперь городская типография, отданная на откуп), несмотря на бюрократические преграды, предприимчивым купцом Ковалевским устроен по виду весьма некрасивый, но, в сущности, полезнейший для города водный подъем. Что бывает с Одессою, когда после четырехмесячного и более бездождия иссякает вода в цистернах и колодцах; какую жители пьют воду; какие от того последствия! Честь и слава доброму гражданину, доставившему всем сносную воду за умеренную плату. Начало водопровода отстоит от города на 12 верст, неподалеку от Успенского монастыря. О проводе лучшей воды, из Днестра, городская дума обсуждает это существеннейшее дело уже несколько лет. Дальние кварталы этой улицы представляют новостроящуюся Успенскую благословенную церковь, в которой богослужение отправляется по старопечатным книгам. This newspaper, Messager de la Russia meridionale, was published for foreign non-residents, while the Russian paper “Odesskiy vestnik” appeared eight years later, but it had a higher quality and was published for the longer period. <...> Much later different papers saw the world, including a French one, a German one, and a Jewish…

On the ground right opposite to the police station (close to the shapeless house of the merchant Papudov, now it is a city priting house, which is farmed out), there is a quite unappealing but rather useful for the city facility — a water pump which was constructed by an enterprising merchant Kovalevskiy despite of all bureaucratic hurdles.

Do you know what happens in Odessa when after four or even more months without any rain the city is left without water, when the water in tanks and wells runs low; what is the quality of the water consumed by citizens and what are the results of it!

Hats off to this kind-hearted gentleman, who proВид на Успенский собор, 1890-е гг. vided water of tolerable quality to everybody in the city View on Uspensky Cathedral, 1890s. and at a moderate charge. The water supply system takes its beginning 12 vests away from the city, not far from the Dormition monastery. For several years the city counsil has been discussing an opportunity to conduct the water of some better quality, from the river Dnister, into the city.

The distant blocks of this street represent a newly-built Dormition church, where the public worships are hold by the early printed books. This church has five leaders and is designed in ancient Russithe architecture style of the 16th century.

At the end of the street there is Dr Shorshtein’s balneary. Across its border there is a place of ultimate human pacification till the general rebirth [The First Christian Cemetery — A. Ya.]” Forty years later, in 1909. G. Moskvich wrote in his famous “Odessa Guidebook”: “The Preobrazhenskaya street is the longest street in Odessa. Throughout its length is ebullient trading liveliness. The groundfloors of all the houses comprise a continuous row of more or less large trading facilities. The best part of the street is located closer to the seaside. <...> Between Bazarnaya and Uspenskaya streets there is Dormition church; at the left side on Uspenskaya street there is a second-class hotel called “Zheleznaya doroga” (The Railway), close to it there is a hydropathical facility by Isakovich, which also includes the 9

At the corner of Kondratenko (Politseiskaya) St there is an Chief of the Police Office, as well as the passport agency and register office. <...> At another corner of Politseiskaya street there is a hotel “Odessa”, and “Centralnaya” hotel is next to it. From here the left side of Preobrazhenskaya St makes one of Sobornaya square’s sides, where Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral Church and the monument to the Prince M. Vorontsov are located.

Opposite to the church at the corner with Deribasovskaya St there is an imperial building called “Passage” with the hotel of the same name inside (the main entrance from Preobrazhenskaya St).

In the next block, close to the City Garden (the Deribasovskiy Garden) there is a huge building of the university — Department of Law and Historical & Philological Departments and University Library.

Opposite them, at the corner of Elisavetinskaya street — a hydropathic establishment and sanatorium

by Benisovich. At the corner with the Malyi lane there is a crossing loop of horse-trams; on the right hand — the Art School. Further, opposite to the Kazarmennyi lane the horse-tram way turns left to Sofievskaya street.

To the right of Sofievskaya St there is one more small block of Preobrazhenskaya St, which is one of the best and the most georgeous corners of Odessa: in the middle of the street there is a beautiful public garden (closed for public), while astride of it there are fine houses. One of them is a building of School named Преображенская, 42. Гостиница «Одесса», 1910-е гг. after Nikolai I the Emperor (a guidebook issued in 42 Preobrazhenskaya St. 1904 mentioned it as “a beautiful house of Gothic ar“Odessa” Hotel, 1910s. chitecture at the same side, close to the sheer drop into the sea”.) Close to it in the beautiful building there is a popuar clinic by doctor Zilberberg.

Four years after, in 1913, Е. Zozulia wrote in the book “The streets portraits. The Preobrazhenskaya”: “Noise, rattle, advertisements, trade, mud. It is an everyday street, but with its own complaints. There is something in it that reminds me a long, restless, blabbing and tongue-tied

Odessa language that starts from “aristocratism” and ends with bazaar. The same can be said about this street. It starts from the “grand” garden and the buildings looking like palaces, and ends with the imported bazaar. And of course this bazaar seems to be more sincere in its look, than the palaces.

A famous academician D.S. Lihachov used to say: “When you discover what estabishments, facilities and other are located in some old building on this street and who were those people living there, you look at the buiding with the different eyes”.

Every house on the Preobrazhenskaya Street is worth of telling a few words about it — who built it, who was the owner or who traded in it. Even those Odessa’s citizens, whose names don’t mean anything to us, were involved in construction and resurfacing the city, and their labour has made Odessa popuar around the world.

1 Preobrazhenskaya St

Two-story private residence of the first part of the 19th century. In 1912 owned by А. Izyumov. In 1895–1916 a mechanical engineer, a founder of the theory of machine’s structure, a professor H. Goham lived here.

Vuchetich’s house. 1850s, architect by А. Kollovich. In 1912 owned by L. Vuchetich-Velitskaya, S. Arplofen, А. Adamenko. A hero of Russian-Turkish war and defense of Shipki (1877), a general F. Radetskiy lived here. From the newspaper: “At night on the 14th of January 1890 in Odessa the Adjutant General Fedor Fedorovich Radetskiy unexpectadly passed away. The requiem will be hold in the apartment of the deceased (on the Preobrazhenskaya street in Vuchetich’s house).” He was buried at the Old Chirstian Cemetery, to which Preobrazhenskaya street leaned at that time. In 1891 a monument designed by the sculptor V. Sherwood was established at his grave, which was destroyed during the cemetery leveling in 1933.

2 Preobrazhenskaya St

Three-story house built at the end of the 19th century, fundamentally reconstructed. At the location of buildings No. 2 and No. 4 in the middle of the 19th century there was a house of the Chief of The Staff of the 2nd Army, a general-adjutant of the count P. Kiselev. 3 Preobrazhenskaya St

Rabinovich House. Two-story house with a long balcony along its facade. At the end of the 19th century by the architect L. Prokopovich. In 1887 there was a photographic studio by I. Margulis, until 1919 — a factory producing photoplates, some times later — a factory producing prosthetic devices. In 1924 there was the orphanage No. 16, which was under the guidance of Children Care Governmental Department. Nowadays it is a Marine Hydrophysical Institute and Physical & Chemical Institute of Environmental and Human Protection.

4 Preobrazhenskaya St

Ekaterina Solomos’s house. Constructed in 1913 by the architect V. Prohaskaya. Reconstructed in 2008 by S. Kosolovskiy. At the beginning of the century there was a sanatorium “Zdravnitsa” by the doctors Y. Zilberberg, A. Trigger, and А. Baranik, with the X-ray room as its disctinctive feature. In 1920 the girls from the Painting Studio used to gather in this house for studying. One of these girls was Marusya Tarasenki, a future wife of I. Ilf. “God saves the times, when the trees break into flowers looking like the candles on Preobrazhenskaya street!” — wrote I. Ilf in 1923 about the chestnut trees on Preobrazhenskaya St. In 1924 this building was used by Odessa Association of Surgeons.

5 Preobrazhenskaya St

Four-story domestic building. Designed in 1881 by the architect D. Mazirov. In 1912 owned by Lily Lipman-Wolf. In 1912 there was a chemico-analytical and bacteriological room of Е. Shor. Nowadays this house is mentioned in the Seamen Guidelines “Lights and signs in the Black and the Azov Seas”. During the twilight hours above the house at the height of 20 meters crimson navigation light shows up. It is specified in all regional marine charts as an “Odessa Leading Mark”, its absolute height is 54.9 meter, while the clear weather visibility distance is 16 nautical miles. At the corner of Preobrazhenskaya and Sofievskaya streets there is a four story lodging house by Inglezi, 1890, designed by the architect D. Mazirov, which is registered on Sofievskaya street.

7 Preobrazhenskaya St

Owned by V. Iraklidi in 1912. In 1900–1902 a bacteriologist, founder and the first dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Novrossiysk University, a professor V. Podvysotskiy lived here. In this very house E. Tsakni, the second wife of the “Uzhnoe obozrenie” newspaper’s editor N. Tsakni, lived here.

structed in 1877 and belonged to Odessa merchant class. Designed by the architect F. Gonsiorovskiy.

Initially there was a house by the earl Y. Bulgari, a member of a secret Greek organization called “Filiki Eteria”, which aimed to establish an independent Greek state. In 1825 a decembrist N. Bulgari was arrested in his father’s house.

In 1877 a new building was constructed especially for the Commercial School. This school in Odessa was the third one in Russia, established after those in Saint-Petersburgh and Moscow.

In its Statute as of 1861 it was mentioned that this school “is aimed to provide special education to young people in the field of commerce... <...> Young people of any title and religion not younger than 14 years and not older than 18 years old are accepted.” The members of the School Board were the famous merchants in Odessa including I. Randich, А. Pashkov, L. Rafalovich, А. Ralli, М. Secastopulo, I. Vuchina, V. Santsenbaher, Е. Petrokokino, N. Ksida, F. Shtern, А. Purits. Initially the tuition fee was 60 rubles per year, while 100 of pupils of impoverished merchants and burghers were able to study for free. school, in addition to general education courses, the puils were studying statistics, political economy, commercial law, accounting and commerce, while the commerce course was taught in French and German. The school established 30 scholarships for poor students (mostly at the expense of the Odessa merchants). In 1884 within the school a home church after Aleksandr Nevskiy was consecrated, which was designed according to the project of А. Bernardazzi, who had placed the church in two halls on the second floor. Iconostasis and plastering were performed by Odessa sculptor I. Sakovich, icons and paintings — by М. Ponomarenko.

In 1898 the school was transformed into 7-year secondary commercial educational institution, the educational program was developed towards general educational sciences. At that very time within the scholl the merchant shipping classes were opened. They existed till May of 1901 and were transformed into Odessa Merchant Shipping School, the only one school of this type in Russia.

But the situation at the school was not very good: “the pupils very often ignore visiting the classes ...they often refuse to answer the teachers’ questions and do the homework only in those cases when it is necessary to obtain a quarter-assessment”, — sadly wrote contemporaries. Students even got the right to put themselves the assessments in the class register, and in the result of this “in some journals one can saw some inappropriate and sometimes quite rude remarks made by students about teachers, as well as other false information about visiting the classes by the students.” As a result, the parents had no idea about the real performance of children. In 1903 the announcement of results of the year even caused riots in the yard and surrounding neighborhoods, which involved not only the students but also their parents. Soon the training became to its normal mode. Since 1903 all graduates who graduated seven classes (not only honors as before) were awarded with the title of honorary citizen, while those who graduated with honors were awarded by the title of Candidate of Commerce.

This Commercial School was graduated by such famous writers as I. Babel, L. Nikulin, А. Bisk, S. Chernihovskiy.

In November 1920 the school was reorganized into the Faculty of Work. October Revolution, After that the Faculty has become a Institute, which has changed a lot of names including Polytechnical, National Economy Institute. These days it is the Odessa State Economical University.

During the days of Odessa’s defense here was Headquarters of the 2nd Marine Regiment commanded by I. Osipova, which is mentioned on the memorial tablet on the building.

9а Preobrazhenskaya St

Tolstoy’s Residential House, 1850, architect F. Morandi. At the end of the 19th or at the beginning of the 20th century the third story was built. In 1912 the house was owned by А. Elman.

From 1887 to 1889 this house was resided a Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov, in

Коммерческое училище закончили писатели И. Бабель, Л. Никулин, А. Биск, С. Черниховский. В ноябре 1920 года вместо училища был организован Рабочий факультет им. Октябрьской революции, здесь же в 1924 г. был Высший вечерний рабочий техникум. Затем рабфак стал институтом, который сменил много названий — Политехнический, Кредитно-экономический, Народного хозяйства. Сейчас — Одесский государственный экономический университет. At the intersections of Preobrazhenskaya and Sofievskaya streets in 1965 there was established the monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union and twice Hero of the Soviet Union R. Malinovskiy, who was born in Odessa in 1898 and took part in liberating Odessa from fascists in 1944. The monument was designed by a sculptor Е. Vuchetich.

On the even side at the corner of Kazarmennyi lane (currently, Nekrasova lane) there is Koklen’s house, 1852.

11 Preobrazhenskaya St

Previously there was “Strange House”, which belonged to Baron Reno.

The house was triangular, because the Dvoryanskaya street had not rested in Elisavetinskaya St and reached Sofievskaya St. At the house entrance at the corner of Elisavetinskaya and Preobrazhenskaya streets there were two monuments of stone knights with swords, coat of arms over the gate adorned with Masonic signs. It was one of the places where they met the members of the Odessa Masonic Lodge “Pontus Euxine”. In 1900, the new building was taken up by “Russian Capital and Profits Insurance Company.” This house Преображенская, 11. Дом страхового is also known as the “Home of the общества «Жизнь».

From the story of the school: “Odesskiy vestnik” as of the May 29 1865, No. 14 indicates that on the 30th of May (by old calendar) 1865 Drawing School is opened and invites to the exhibition of Fine Arts objects, which is the accompanying event to the School opening. Odessa Art School, which subsequently received a status of the Art School, was founded by Odessa Community of Fine Arts under the patronage of the famous people in the city including prince S. Vorontsov, Governor-General P. Kotzeba, mayor Novoselskiy, prince Gagarin, prince Manuk-Bey, the Tolstoy’s counts, Italian General Counsil Castilia, such famous architects as F. Boffo, L. Otton, and F. Gonsiorovskiy. For a long time, the school existed solely on donations and had no permanent address. In 1885 the City Council on the site previously occupied by the Medical Administrative Board Office, built a special building.

“By the end of 90s of the 19th century, finally, my dream came true: I entered Odessa Art School, where all my hopes were turned to since I was a child. The rooms, where the pupils took their classes, looked like large rooms with the unique equipment. The benches were arranged in a way that they create three tiers. The first tier is at the bottom, the other two are on the rise. Students were sitting close to each other. Therer was absolute silence inside... However, veru quickly I realized that the main school’s point of interest is the people — the teachers and alumnus.” — these are the memories of an artist and a teacher Т. Fraerman.

The classes were hold by such academicians as K. Kostandi, G. Ladyzhenskiy and a professor L. Iorini. In 1899 a bust of Iorini designed by B. Edvards was established in the School building (in commemoration to 30-th anniversary of teaching). Such famous people as M. Vrubel, V. Kandinskiy, L. Pasternak, I. Brodskiy, M. Grekov, P. Nilus, D. Burluyk, Y. Chernihov, P. Shilingovskiy and many others.

For a long time the school was headed by K. Kostandi. The artist Polyakov wrote the following about the history of the name of the school: “They were celebrated its (School’s) 100th anniversary. Kostandi was commemorated with the good word, but the School was named after Grekov”.

Contemporary artists, being the pride of Odessa, are the graduates of the School, or as they say in Odessa, “Grekovka”.

At the corner of Khersonskaya street (now Pastera street) and Preobrazhenskaya street there is a house built in the early 1880s.

It housed one of the first steam bakery in Odessa which was functioning since 1833 and was based by a German colonists Duryan, as well as a confectionery with a wide choice of delicacies.

In this very building until 1920 the hotel “Victoria” was located. “Hotel Victoria”, maintained by Wagner, is placed in the best part of town, at the corner of Khersonskaya and Preobrazhenskaya streets against the city garden where kumiss and mineral water are sold, and half a block away from the Cathedral and Deribasovskaya street.”

There was another facility at this very address — a hospital “for venereal, syphilitic, urogenital and skin diseases by Dr Weinstein. The fee for advice was 30 kopecks.”

Муздепо при Окрнаробразе открывает депо музыкальных инструментов и склад нот с прокатом роялей и пианино, ремонтом и настройкой клавишных инструментов. In 1944–1983 the people’s actress of UkSSR L. Bugova lived here, and it is evidenced by the memorial plate.

This is a house with beautiful moldings on the facade, most of which has been destroyed.

On the even-numbered side of the street, namely at the corner of Preobrazhenskaya and Malyi lane (now Mayakovsky lane) there is a two-story house, in the underground floor of which the wine has being sold by the glass. Its official name is “Tairovskie vina”, in folk they call it “bodega” or “vinarka.” This has been a favourite meeting place for local historians and artists since the 1960-s.

Across the street there is a house performed in a ​constructivists manner in 1930. In the beginning of the 19th century here was the residemce of the Austrian Consul von Tom, a suppporter and a friend of the Duke of Richelieu and a fellow of A.S. Pushkin. Both buildings are registered at the Mayakovskogo alley.

This house was settled on by the biologists: in 1865–1871 — plant biologist and bacteriologist, the president of Novorossiysk Association of Naturalists L. Tsenkovskiy, in 1865–1872 — chemist, ademician M. Sokolov, in 1869–1880 — agriculturist and agricultural chemist, professor D. Abasheev.

At this address on October 6, 1928 Department of Music by the Public Education District Office (Okrnarobraz) opens the depo with musical instruments and the warehouse with music sheets where one can rent pianos and grand pianos, or appeal for repair and adjustment of keyboard instruments.

In 1898–1924 an inventor of the first movie camera for shooting and film screenings (Kinetoscope) in the world lived there, in the wing. His name is I. Timchenko. At the house there is his memorial plate with the list of films made by his kinetoscope.

At the boundary between 1817–18 due to the project of the engineer and a hydraulic engineer from Austria I. Krug “Office of the Commandant of Odessa in Government Facility” building (eferred to in the vernacular as “gauptvakhta”) was constructed.

The building resembled a “small ancient temple” — a neat two-story house in the style of Russian classicism with pediment and portico of four Ionic columns in the middle of the facade. The building was divided into chambers for lower and officers, there was “the Cold Room” in the yard for sobering up drunks and brawlers, as well as stables and a latrine.

By the middle of the 1870s the building received its mailbox with the number 19. In 1886 the military commandant administration was abolished and in February 1888 this gauptvakhta Преображенская, 21, 1910-е гг.

Повсюду все новейшие приспособления, электрическое освещение и т.д. Пекарня устроена по образцу берлинских и парижских…» Что такое кондитерская Либмана? Одно из первых объявлений: «… Чай, кофе, шоколад. Буфет с закусками. Шоколад, оршад и другие прохладительные напитки. Кондитерские печения всех сортов. Паровая механическая пекарня различных сортов хлеба» и даже «приготовляется алейронатный хлеб и печенья для страдающих сахарной болезнью».

7 декабря 1905 г. в кофейне Либмана раздались взрывы. Пятеро анархистов-боевиков швырнули в кафе пять бомб. Погибли два десятка человек, еще столько же получили ранения. Этот взрыв описал Ю. Олеша, перепутав место: «Я слышал звук взрыва бомбы, которую бросил анархист в кафе Дитмана в Одессе, в 1905 году. …. Звук, сперва быстро взлетевший кверху, потом как бы стал оседать и расширяться. Все это, правда, в одну десятую долю секунды» (кафе Дитмана было неподалеку, на Тираспольской улице). В 1909 г. путеводитель сообщал: «Хорошая кондитерская с крепкими напитками. Охотно посещается чистой публикой. Огромная бильярдная. Летняя веранда». В этом же здании в 1910-е гг. была и аптека В. А. Чацкина. О кофейне Либмана и скворцах, облеплявших в солнечные дни верхние этажи дома, писали И. Бунин, А. Ку22

was acquired for demolition by B. Liebmann, who was dealing with Odessa’s bread and muffins production for long time. He started his work at the confectioner G. Duryan, and with the matter of time “Papa Liebmann,” as he was called, managed to make some fortune and enlisted the architect E. Mesner for the construction of his own confectionery.

In the “Odesskiy vestnik” newspaper as of August 19, 1889 there was published a description of Liebmann’s patisserie opening: “Yesterday the house and the consecration were consecrated... For these house and confectionery construction the owner has spent about 240 000 rubles, but the space planning and outfitting leave nothing to be desired. There the latest models of devices, electric lighting etc. everywhere.

The bakery is arranged along the lines of Berlin and Paris bakeries…”

What is Liebmann’s patisserie? Here we have one of the first advertisements: “… Tea, coffee, chocolate. Buffet with snacks. Chocolate, orgeat and other cold drinks. Pastry of all sorts.

Steam mechanical bakery for making different kinds of bread, including aleuronic bread and cookies for people suffering from diabetes.”

7th of December 1905 in the Liebmann’s café there was an explosion. Five anarchists-militants hurled five bombs inside the cafe. Two dozen people were killed, and many more were injured.

This explosion described Yu. Olesha, yet mixing up the location: “I heard the sound of a bomb explosion that the anarchist threw inside the Ditman’s cafe in Odessa in 1905…. The sound at first rapidly took off, then began sort of settling and expanding around. All this, however, took not Магазин «Bugul», 1942 г. more than one tenth of a second” (Ditman’s cafe “Bugul” Shop, 1942. was close to the event location, on Tiraspolskaya street).

In 1909 the guide wrote: “Good confectionery with hard drinks. Very popular among visitors. A huge billiard room. Summer veranda.” In 1910 in this very building a Chatskin’s pharmacy was working.

Liebmann’s café and the starlings that fastened upon the upper floors of the bulding were anthemed in the works of I. Bunin, A. Kuprin, V. Kataev. L. Slavin also used to visit it.

In 1920s on the upper floor and attic there were communal apartments, and while at the bottom of the building there were different facilities. The one which stayed there during

Nikolas Cathedral Church was founded in 1795. It was built according to the plans of Engineer Captain V. Vonrezant and the architect F. Frappoli. In 1804 the church was rebuilt by the Engineer Colonel Glukhov. In 1808 the cathedral underwent finishing, and Archbishop Platon consecrated the high altar in honor of Transfiguration of the Lord (Preobrazhenie Gospodne), so the cathedral was named after it — Savior Transfiguration Cathedral. After the reconstruction in 1899–1903 the cathedral could accommodate 12 000 parishioners. Before the revolution, the icon Kasperovskaya Mother of God — Patroness Saint of Odessa — was kept in the cathedral, as well as a copper cross casted from the coins donated by the rank and file of the Crimean War. In the cathedral the archbishops (the most honored of them were Archbishop Innokentiy), Prince M.Vorontsov and his wife were buried.

In 1936 the cathedral was blown up, the graves of the Vorontsov couple and archbishops were opened, and then transferred to the Slobodskoe cemetery. At the altar’s site a fountain bowl was installed at the expenses of the academician V. Filatov. In the beginning of reformation period (Perestroika) the memorial sign was installed and the excavations at the cathedral’s site began. In 2005 Savior Tranfiguration Cathedral was reconstructed at the expense of Odessa citizens and Prince Vorontsov and his wife were solemnly reburied.

In 1863 the monument to Prince M. Vorontsov designed by the sculptor F. Brugger was installed on Sobornaya Square.

The money were collected by subscription throughout Russia.

Three sides of the podium are the reliefs depicting the battle with the French at Kryon in Соборная площадь. «Водопроводный» фонтан, 1960-е гг.

1814, another one depicts the Sobornaya Square. “Water pipe” fountain, 1960s. transfer of Varna fortress keys to Vorontsov in 1828 during the Russian-Turkish war, and the last one represents the glorification of the Prince as a governor who developed the trade and agriculture in the country.

On the fourth side there is an inscription: “To His Serene Highness Prince Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov from grateful countrymen. 1863.” The photographers took pictures of the opening from the upper floors and roofs of Kramarev’s and Papudov’s houses. And of course it couldn’t go without an amusing accident: “Odesskiy Vestnik” described the monument as a “bronze bust standing at full height.” At the beginning of the 1920s a monument was planned to be brought down, but then it was decided just to replace the inscription with the epigram by Pushkin to Vorontsov. In 1940s, the caption was just “M. Vorontsov”, but

9 сентября 1873 г. на Соборной площади был торжественно освящен фонтан в честь открытия нового одесского водопровода из Днестра, в начале ХХ века он был заменен на фонтан из камня-дикаря. После реконструкции в 2005 г. фонтан-чаша заняла место «водопроводного» фонтана. On the 9th of September 1873 in honor to the opening of the new water pipeline from Odessa to Dniester a fountain was consecrated, while in the early twentieth century it was replaced by a wild-stone fountain. After reconstruction in 2005, the fountain bowl replaced the “water-pipe” fountain.

Traditionally Soborka (Sobornaya square) is a place where only male soccer fans and chess players gather together. The former were here almost since the times football game was invented, while the latter joined them a little later.

Tolvinskiy. This place has an outstanding history. Previously there was a house of “municipal doctor” Jovanni Kapello, who had been saving the lives of Odessa citizens during the Black Death in 1812 and died during the epidemics. In 1845 at this site D. Skudieri started theater construction for Prince P. Gagarin. In 1848, a plot of land with a half-constructed theater was acquired the merchant B. Wagner, who ordered a house project from the architect F. Boffo, where subsequently opened the well-known “Evropeyskaya gostinitsa (European hotel).” In 1858 he exchanged the hotel for the former Richelieu Lyceum building.

In 1900 the building was completely rebuilt by the architects A. Bernardazzi and N. Tolvinskiy. Instead of the shabby one-story buildings with windows facing the City Garden, they built a new 3-story book depository. From the City Garden side they left some space for further extending of the library. These days “Green Theatre” is situated on that place.

Novorossiysk University library inherited Richelieu Lyceum’s library, to which the Duke of Richelieu submitted his personal library. In 1909, a guide to Odessa wrote: “Novorossiysk University Library has a highly valuable book heritage of special and general nature. Upon the permission from the university administration the library is available for the individuals”.

Today, the library has 13 registered collection bequeathed by scholars and statesmen.

Among these funds there are books from the Vorontsov’s family, Governor-General A. Strogonov, slavist V. Grigorovich, historian N. Schilder, modern works from the historian and ethnographer F. Petrun and philologist S. Iliev.

The oldest book in the library was published in about 1476. A magnificent incunabulum “World Chronicle” by G. Shedel containing about 2000 illustrations printed in 1493.

This library has one of the best 17th–18th cent. European periodical collections in Ukraine and the lucrative collection of traveler’s stories for that very period. Today, the library fund has about 4 million of copies.

In the 1920–30s professor S. Rubinstein worked here. The graduates of Odessa Uni-

During its long history the library changed its name a lot of times. In 1920 it got the name of the Main Library of Higher School, in 1923–1930 it was the Central Scientific Library of Odessa, in 1930–1933 it was merged with the Odessa Public Library. Since 1933 this library came back to its University name.

At the beginning of the 20th century this building housed the Historical & Philological and Law Faculties, and there was the room of experimental psychology. In that room in 1918–1919 the “Thursdays” of Student Literary and Artistic Study Group were arranged, where A. Adalis, V. Kataev, Z. Shishova, Yu. Olesha, E. Bagritsky, and A. Fioletov read their poems. In 1918 the “The Student Study Group” published its first almanac that remained to be the only one.

Papudov’s house (Papudova’s, the Papudovs) The house was built for the Greek merchant family of Papudovs as a “bakery” — warehouse for storing grain by I. Kozlov in 1843–1846 years. Being one of the biggest houses, it faces Sobornaya square and the three adjoining streets.

Subsequently the building was reconstructed several times by different architects, including F. Morandi and D. Mazirov. According to the memoirs of M. Reingerts, the final reconstruction was conducted in the 1890s by D. Mazirov for Martyanov’s heir.

Preobrazhenskaya Street facade was intended for accommodation of the owners, there were luxurious mosaic floors and nine doors of the 18th century from the Duke of Sagan’s mansion (the mansion was donated to Ariadna Papudova by Baron Rothschild in 1840).

Shops in the house were rented by all sorts of people: in 1860 there was a photographic studio, later — a stationer’s shop of Ivan Makh, a Yaroslavl Canvases shop of A. Solovyov and Co. with a purely Odessa turnover in advertising: “35-year activity in Odessa guarantees for the quality of goods and good faith”. In 1860s there was a Private Gymnasium of Anna Pilar who also lodged there. In 1912 she was followed by the artist V. Reingbald who opened an art school of teaching and drawing. In 1912–1914 “Ukrainian Club” meetings were held there, “Brotslavich & Co” military book shop was there. In 1912 the house owner was listed as A. Martynova and the manager was V. Zuyev.In 1919 Vera Kholodnaya lived there for a few weeks, and she died of “Spanish flu” on February 16 in this house. A crowd of thousands of townspeople gave the last honours to the favorite actress, requiem service over her was held in Transfiguration Cathedral, the coffin with the body of the beloved actress was carried in arms to a cemetery at the end of Preobrazhenskaya St. The facade of the building that faces Preobrazhenskaya St burned in 1920. В 1912–1914 гг. здесь собирался «Український клуб», был военный магазин книги «Броцлавич и Ко». В 1912 г. владелицей дома значится А. К. Мартынова, управляющим — В. И. Зуев. В 1919 г. здесь несколько недель жила Вера Холодная, в этом доме она и умерла от «испанки» 16 февраля. Многотысячная толпа горожа провожала в последний путь любимую актрису, отпевали ее в Преображенском соборе, гроб с телом любимой актрисы на руках отнесли на кладбище в конце Преображенской. Фасад дома, выходящий на Преображенскую, сгорел в 1920 г. Во время Второй мировой войны дом сильно пострадал. Вначале восстановили две первых этажа, в 1970-х под руководством Г. Е. Лернера были надстроены два этажа. И вновь не обошлось без пожара — уже восстановленные этажи сгорели, и их пришлось отстраивать заново. У дома Папудовых в 1960–1990-е гг. гг. был цветочный базар. Позднее ряды и аквариумы (в которые ставили букеты зимой и зажигали для тепла свечи) с цветами заменила современная стеклянная галерея.

1970s two floors were added under the direction of G. Lerner. And again fire couldn’t be avoided — already recovered floors burned down and they had to be rebuilt.

There was a flower market in 1960–1990s near the Papudov’s house. Later, rows and aquariums (bouquets were placed there in winter and kept warm by lit candles) with flowers were replaced by a modern glass gallery.

On September 2, 2003 unveiled was the monument to Vera Kholodnaya on the site of the lost part of the building — sculptor Alexander Tokarev, architect V. Glazyrin.

Vera Kholodnaya Square

Small triangular square between Papudov’s house and 27 Preobrazhenskaya St. It was called Politseyskaya Square, General R. Kondratenko Square who died in Port Arthur — since 1905, Rosa Luxemburg Square — since 1920. And Vera Kholodnaya Square — since February 1996.

In 1927 there was a marble copy of the sculpture “Laocoon”, ordered by G. Marazli in his time and stood at his dacha. In 1969, the sculpture was dismantled and installed in front of Archaeological Museum in 1971. Since 1988, there stands a bronze monument to “Petya and Gavrik” by the sculptor N. Stepanova. At that time, it was the only monument in Odessa, and perhaps the first one in the Soviet Union to literary heroes — characters of the novel “Lone White Sail” by V. Katayev.

In 1912, the owner was F. Agarkov.

Here, a retired military A. Willim opened an electric theater (or illusion), “Apollo”, which existed until 1919. In the same house for many years there had been working a box office in a tiny room, where you could buy tickets to all the theaters of Odessa.

There is also had been installed a memorial tablet “Righteous Woman of Реклама театра «Аполло», 1910-е гг.

В годы оккупации выкупала из гетто женщин и детей на сохранившиеся фамильные драгоценности. Беременная, она бесстрашно спасала жизни, одна из женщин родила у нее в доме и скрывалась там более года. Еще один эпизод из биографии Т. Циклопуло — известный режиссер М. Ромм пригласил ее сниматься в одном из своих фильмов.

The daughter of the famous Odessa lawyer, a GULAG prisoner, Tatyana returned to her hometown before the war and hid in Pervomaisk to avoid re-arrest. During the occupation she bought out women and children from the ghetto on the remaining family jewelry. Pregnant, she bravely saved lives; one of the women gave birth in her house and hid there for more than a year. Another episode from the biography of T. Tsiklopulo — a famous film director Mikhail Romm invited her to star in one of his films.

Возникла как транспортная развязка, название, в отличие от одноименной улицы, получила поздно, в 1875 г. В центре площади до середины XIX в. стояло здание Палаты мер и весов, в 1874 г., когда в Одессу пошла по водопроводу вода из Днестра, здесь открыли фонтан, названный в честь купца Я. Тихого, ярого сторонника днестровского водопровода. В 1910 г. на месте фонтана была построена трамвайная остановка, так называемая «бельгийка» (однотипные крытые остановки с колоннами сооружало Бельгийское трамвайное общество), снесеная в 1970 г. Невзирая на все переименования, Тираспольскую в разговорах всегда называли именно так, с ударением на «о» и никогда — длинным названием «Площадь 1905 года». И сейчас порой можно услышать от водителя маршрутки — «Это у вас там Тирáсполь, а в Одессе — Тираспóльская».

Originated as traffic intersection, its name unlike the eponymous street received late, in 1875. Until the middle of the 19th century there was a building of the Chamber of Weights and Measures at the center of the square; in 1874, when water supply was laid in Odessa from the Dniester, there was opened a fountain, named after the merchant Ya. Tikhiy, an ardent supporter of the Dniester water supply system. In 1910 there was built a so-called “the Belgian” tram stop at the fountain site (roofed stops with columns of the same type were built by the Belgian tram company), demolished in 1970.

Despite all the renaming, Tiraspolskaya Square was always called exactly that way in conversations, with the accent on “o” and never called its long name “The Year of 1905 Square”. Even now sometimes you can hear from a bus driver — “You have Tiráspol there and here in Odessa it’s Tiraspólskaya.”

Khloponin’s house, two-story, 1870–1872. Until the 1860s, the place where now the Greek Consulate and a jewelry store are, referred to as a “vacant lot”, and No. 26 of Preobrazhenskaya St belonged to the following structure — Kramaryov’s house. But in the late 1860s, one of the first photographers in Odessa Alexander Khloponin asks the City Council a permission to erect a large two-story house at the empty space, to use it for 10 years and then donate the building to the city. In 1870–72 Khloponin’s Profitable House was built. And this name strengthened for decades to come. Khloponin, a member of the Paris Photographic Society, opened the photo studio, where he shot photos of the famous Odessa people: the Tolstoys, Gagarins, Kotzebus, Liderses, Marazlis, Sikars, Rodokonakis, Papudovs, Wagners — the cream of the art, “intellectual”, patronage of Odessa. Subsequently, the house was transferred to the city. Before the revolution, the house was given for rent to various individuals — as for institution, and for housing. At different times there were: the best shop of men’s ready-made clothes in town of A. Leroy, “Louvre” shop (ready-made clothes and jewelry), from 1895 to 1901 — N. Balyshev’s photo institution, from 1898 — M. Leibovich’s, for some time the Silins father and son’s Photo Studio. The most famous tenant was “Pauline Goppenfeld Pub”, i.e.

“Gambrinus”, opened at the end of the 19th century in the basement. Casks and barrels are instead of tables and stools, visitors are “sailors, artisans, workers, prostitutes and their lovers” wrote S. Yushkevich in his novel “Street”.

The audience was mingled and varied, from tramps to writers. There played a famous Sashka the Musician (Pevzner) and his accompanists M. Khomitser and I. Edelshtein. Thanks to A. Kuprin, a frequent visitor to “Gambrinus” who described the pub in the eponymous story, “Gambrinus” became one of symbols of Odessa.

Куприну, частому посетителю «Гамбринуса»», описавшему пивную в одноименном рассказе, «Гамбринус» сделался одним из символов Одессы. В 1918 г. «По Преображенской в районе улицы Дерибасовской и Городского сада имеется молочная «High life», где собирались молодые поэты и художники, устраивались шумные литературные вечера с участием Э. Багрицкого, Ю. Олеши, А. Фиолетова, З. Шишовой. Сохранился портрет старшего брата И. Ильфа, художника С. Фазини в кафе «High life», сделанный его другом С. Олесевичем. Нумерация дома неоднократно менялась: 1875 г. он носил 28-й номер, в1884-м — 26-й, с середины 1900-х — 32-й номер по ул. Преображенской. В 2000-е годы дом был реконструирован по проекту арх. Д. Повстанюка, надстроена мансарда. Но и сейчас над угловым входом в ювелирный магазин «Радуга» виден герб выпускника Санкт-Петербургской Академии художеств А. Хлопонина — палитра и кисти.

The numbering of the house repeatedly changed: in 1875 it had No. 28, in 1884 — No. 26, since the mid 1900s — 32 Preobrazhenskaya St. In the 2000-ies, the house was reconstructed upon the project of the architect D. Povstanyuk, a mansard was overbuilt. But even now above the corner entrance to “Rainbow” jewelry store, there is the coat of arms of A. Khloponin, the graduate of St. Petersburg Art Academy — with palette and brush.

Now there is the festive like a birthday cake “Passage” the history of which tells the previous booklet “The History of Deribasovskaya St.” Until 1822 there was a club hotel and restaurant of L. Otton, then a luxurious house of the first guild merchant M. Kramaryov (according to an Odessa legend — a former serf identified by the owner). Kramaryov’s house was considered the most majestic in Odessa, in 1837 the first Art and Industrial Exhibition was opened exactly there. There lodged L. Pushkin, the younger brother of the poet and it was visited by N. Gogol. Since 1832 there was a pharmacy of a German pharmacist K. Vilberg. Later, the house was owned by the general Sinitsin’s wife, and in 1898 M. Mendelevich acquired the house and built “Passage” in its place. In “Passage” on the corner instead of the relatively new jewelry shop was “Tsentralny” grocery, and on Preobrazhenskaya St side there was “Dynamo” sports shop for many years.

Дорошевич: «С самого утра одессит посидит в кафе… поедет на Фонтан…, вернувшись, съест пару бутербродов в «Квисисане»». Здесь, опустив 5 копек в прорезь автомата, можно было получить из шкафчика бутерброд или бокал с напитком. Заведение считалось вполне респектабельным: «подают холодные закуски, посещается дамами», — гласила реклама. Это не помешало некоему Петру Хаджогло стянуть бокалы прямо из ресторана, а еще одному предприимчивому одесситу опускать вместо пятаков оловянные кружочки. В этом же доме в магазине И. И. Скроцкого модницы приобретали шляпки. После революции ресторан сменила показательная столовая при рабфаке. А с шестидесятых годов ХХ в. до начала ХХI в. здесь был ресторан «Театральный».

Mimi’s house, a two-story, 1848, arch. K. Dallakva. In 1912 the owner was G. Mimi. In the early 20th century located there a beer and automatic restaurant “Kvisisana.” V. Doroshevich mentions it in his story “Kostya Ziberoff”: “From the early morning an odessite will sit in a cafe ... ... go to the Fountain, upon returning, will eat a couple of sandwiches in “Kvisisana.” There, by dropping 5 kopecks into the slot of automaton, you could get a sandwich or a glass of drink out of the locker.

The restaurant was considered quite respectable, “cold snacks are served, visited by ladies” — said advertising. That did not prevent a certain Peter Hadzhoglo from stealing glasses directly from the restaurant, and another enterprising odessite to drop tin circles instead of real coins.

In the same house was the shop of I. Skrotskiy where fashionable women bought hats. After the revolution, the restaurant was replaced by a demonstrative dining at Working Faculty (Rabfak). And since the sixties of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century there was a restaurant “Teatralny.”

Ladies of easy virtue walked along Preobrazhenskaya St from Deribasovskaya St to Grecheskaya St. Time to time from a nearby Bulvarny police station came formidable orders to eliminate prostitution in a separately taken area: “I noticed that ... after dusk and until the late night whole crowds of prostitutes nearly always walked, allowing themselves impudently affect and stick to men, and curse violating decency of Ekaterininskaya, Deribasovskaya, and Preobrazhenskaya streets as well as Sobornaya and Kondratenko Squares... by virtue of which I prescribe to take measures.”

In the 1910s there was placed a society of sanatorium colonies for poor students of Jewish population, and in 1920 a photo studio “Kvisibella.” After the war and till the end of the 20th century there was a cinema named after M. Gorky on the first floor.

Rafalovich’s three-story house, the mid-19th century. In 1912 the owner was P. Yuryevich. Since 1873 there was “Tsentralnaya” hotel. It contained “104 numbers from 1 to 5 rubles a day.” In advertising, the innkeeper A. Zhirgulevich informed an understanding public that “he was the manager of “Peterburgskaya” and “Londondonskaya” hotels at J. Cauchois for more than ten years” and notified that “electric lighting is for free.”

Ukrainian playwright and actor I. Tobilevych stayed there. There a gymnasium student Valya Kataev was supposed to bring a picture of a visiting merchant against the background of an airplane made by him: “Don’t think of fooling me — said mister and after digging in pockets of his jerkin, he gave me a large business card and wrote with a gold pencil on the back of it immediately, but rather sloppy “Tsentralnaya” Hotel, room 76” — V. Kataev, “Broken lives, or Magic Horn of Oberon.” Right there was “Tea trade of Stepan Tertusa” shop who traded tea of “own booking from China.” In the 1920s “Berlin Photo Studio” worked there. After the revolution, the “Tsentralnaya” became the “Selbud” Hotel, then the old name was returned.

The building that was built by F. Boffo was rebuilt twice: Stable Buildings in 1856 on the part of the street Politseiskaya (Bunin), arch. I. Dallakvoy, in 1899 the building was renovated by the architect V. Dombrovskii.

In this building was located P. Frantsov’s printing house. “Intending to introduce a new order in the management of urban typography from January 1, 1827, I propose Duma to prepare premises thereof at the upper floor of the house located in the police courtyard and first served as a prison” — the disposal of M. Vorontsov Odessa City Council November 11, 1826. There was printed one of the first newspapers of the city “Odessa Vestnik”. According to the same address at the beginning of the 20th century were registered a savings bank for the city police and the address table “for retrieving persons living in Odessa” — for 5 kopecks and 5–10 minutes one could get the desired address. In 1917, the militia came to replace the police. Among the policemen there were also law students and young poets. The poet P. Stavropulo (Stavrov) recalled, “At that time I was a bailiff of the Bulvarny district (the most important one). Actually I was a student — three poods five pounds of weight — but that was just the thing after the revolution. A real burly bailiff (weight not less than five poods), with a mustache but in a civilian clothes came sometimes to look at my work. I had a dashing poet Edya Bagritsky and a poet Anatoly Fioletov ... as wardens or something at my command”. An inspector of criminal investigation department, a student of the 4th year Shor (real name of A. Fioletov) was killed not far from Privoz in November 1918. E. Bagritsky described the militia service and Bulvarny Station in the poem “February”:

Isakovich Baths, 1876, Arch. A. A. Omarini.That was not just baths, but the balneary and hydropathic institution. Founded in 1867 by the Karaim merchant I. Isakovich.

In 1879 “Isakovich Hydrotherapeutic Institution” consists of several departments: a hydropathic department under the supervision of Dr. Rosenblum; an extensive summer mineral swimming pool; a year-round “numbered fresh and mineral baths”; Men’s marble bath with a shower and a common male and female baths. In 1892, the son Samuil expanded and improved baths.

In 1894, one wrote about them: “from a medical point the institution is at the level of Europe’s best institutions of this kind and is equipped with all kinds of apparatuses and devices necessary for the successful use of hydrotherapy ... A female doctor is invited for ladies.

Consultations of medical specialists. Showers: Mantel, Scottish, pole-mounted, circular filiform, etc. Treatment of diseases: gastric catarrh, guts, neuralgia, neurasthenia, suffering of spinal cord and brain, rheumatism, syphilis and many others ... Baths, hydropathy, Isakovich swimming pool. Ten separate departments. Rooms with baths and steam. First-class common baths (Russian baths). Showers. Traditional baths. Clean and comfortable! The fee makes from 10 kopecks to 1 ruble 25 kopecks a person. “During the Jewish pogrom in 1905 a detachment of self-defense broke up rioters near the Isakovich Baths. Since 1910 Alexander, a grandson of Isakovich headed the baths, he was a professor and combined management of the baths with teaching biology at the university.

After the revolution, the baths were nationalized, in 1938 A. Isakovich was executed.

His sister had emigrated, she was known in France as a singer and teacher Anna El-Tour.

After the revolution the balneary baths turned into garrison baths administered by Odgubvonesanpod. In 1928, civilians were offered with “diluted baths, carbon, electro-light and others. Ordinary shower, Sharko, ascending and others, all kinds of electrification, mud poultice, and massage under the constant supervision by a physician.”

Baths were there after the war. Finally they disappeared in the middle of the 20th century, and only in jokes and books “Isakovich Baths” remained. In his story “Broken lives or

The most “photographic” house at Preobrazhenskaya St. In 1874–78 there was T. Grigorashenko photo studio and after his move there worked photographs G. Pisarskiy (in 1878–79), M. Bronshtein (1879–83).

A photo studio of a retired clerk’s F. Tysser companions and N. Pakhnitskiy worked from 1883 to the end of 1880s; from 1890 till 1911 there was a photo studio of a reserve noncommissioned officer P. Morozov which bought L. Dorman in 1911. Dorman’s Photography worked till the end of 1920s.

In the beginning of 1930-ies six women-photographers arranged there “The collective of picture workers in the name of March 8 Odessa Labour Exchange Committee” and pharmaceutical and perfume wharehose of a dispensing chemist Fan-Yung, where they sold miracle cream “Rafael”, which “provokes a natural blush.”

Holy Dormition Cathedral (Svyato-Uspenskiy Cathedral) 1855–1869, architect L. Otton. A wooden chapel of the Old Believer community was constructed at the site of the current Assumption Church in 1814. Duke of Richelieu took active participation in that process.

In 1841, the church became known as the Common Faith church — the Old Believers of the Assumption Church reunited with the Orthodox Church. A construction plan of a three-altar Holy Dormition church was approved in 1845. July 17, 1855 St. Innocent (Borisov) laid a foundation stone of the new church. It was designed by L. Otton, the biggest sum of money for the construction was donated by the merchants I. and N. Cherepennikov.

On April 13, 1869 the Dormition Church was consecrated, and on January 19, 1875 the main aisle of the lower church was consecrated; it was dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker — patron saint of sailors and travelers.

Since 1932 the Dormition Church has become the Cathedral. In the late 30s the Cathedral was closed, part of the premises were occupied by an archive. In 1942, the lower church activity was renewed. For this people had to pump out water from it for several days — the cathedral was flooded on 1.5 meter. During the WWII the upper part suffered much more than the lower one, a German bomb hit the central dome. In 1943, the bell tower of the 43

The main relic of the Holy Dormition Cathedral is the miraculous icon of Kasperovskaya Mother of God, brought to Odessa for the first time in 1854 from the village of Kasperovo which saved the city during the Crimean War. There are the relics of the righteous Jonah in the lower church who served here at the end of the 19th century. The cross that he consecrated water is kept in the cathedral and it is one of the most revered shrines among the people, as well as the icon of St. Innocent stored with a particle of his relics.

In 2008, on the initiative and blessing of Metropolitan of Odessa and Izmail Agafangel major overhaul of the building was carried out, the heating system was improved; the church was decorated with new wall paintings made under the project of V. Ляшенко, остальные три — женщинам. Владелицей дома № 74 была представительница известной купеческой семьи Н.С. Скроцкая, № 76 принадлежал М. Б. Поверенной, в нем была аптека А. Д. Беккера, № 78 — Е. А. Штыхновой-Матвеевой, а в 1928 г. здесь приобретали кисти и щетки в артели «Промкисть».

A three-story house of the end of 19th century. In 1912 the owner is M. Tsvyakh.

Here in 1910s was a preaching house No. 8 which unites Jews the flour traders.

72–78 Preobrazhenskaya St

The houses were destroyed during the war, and later there rose new buildings on place of the ruins: a multi-story house on the building’s No. 72 site and the so-called “Stalinka.” And before the revolution the house No. 72 belonged to D. Lyashenko, the other three — to women.

The owner of the house No. 74 was a representative of the well-known merchant family, N. Skrotskaya, No. 76 belonged to M. Poverennaya, there was a drugstore of A. Bekker, No. 78 — to E. Shtykhnova-Matveyeva, and in 1928 one could buy brushes in the artel “Promkist.”

Средняя школа № 118. На месте школы была старообрядческая церковь во имя Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы (1911–1936 гг.), построенная на средства купцов Дубининых, владельцев магазина на Дерибасовской. При доме церкви была типография Ф. Г. Губенко и И. И. Брегмана, фотографии Никифора Гоголя (1890-е гг.), А. И. Уманского (1894–1910) и вдовы фотографа Писарского. После революции работала фотография «Фото-румын». В 1936 г. церковь была взорвана. На этом месте построили школу, в которой в 1940-е гг. учились сатирик М. М. Жванецкий и поэт-песенник И. Шаферан.

Secondary school No. 118. The Old Believer church in the name the Holy Virgin Protection was on the site of the school (1911–1936), built at the expense of merchants the Dubinins, owners of a shop on Deribasovskaya St. F. Gubenko and I. Bregman’s printing house was under the church, a Photography of Nikifor Gogol (1890), A. Umansky (1894– 1910) and the widow of the photographer Pisarsky. After the revolution, here worked a photography “Photo-Romanians”.

In 1936 the church was blown up.

A school was built at this place where in the 1940s writer M. Zhvanetskiy and a songwriter Ivan Shaferan studied.

A two-story house of the mid 19th century. In 1912, the owner was Sh. Rozenblat. Here, before the revolution one could receive advice for 30 kopecks in the “hospital for patients coming with internal, children, throat, ears and nose diseases” and buy the prescribed medicines in a pharmacy of E. Weber, and then take a picture at I. Staroselskiy’s. In March, 1944 commander of the partisan detachments in Odessa V. Avdeev (Chernomorskiy) was mortally wounded near the house as reads a memorial plaque on the building.

A new house of late 20th century. In 1912, here in the house of G. & Z. Bekers was “a clinic in all specialties. Fee for advice — 40 kopecks. A council of three doctors — 3 rubles.”

A two-story building, mid.-19th century. In 1912, the owner was V. Gentsler.

In this house in 1913, was born a composer M. Tabachnikov. His sister recalled the story of his mother: “When our father returned from the captivity (in 1918), Monia, who was then about 5 years, would not let him in the apartment at 83 Preobrazhenskaya street:” My mother said not to let strangers in...” In 1920s there were a city department of labor savings bank and the seventh post and telegraph office in this house.

In 1912, the owners were E-R., Yu., and D-M. Barskiys. From 1902 there was a clinic of orthopedic and mechanical surgery of Dr S. Kofman.

Later it housed the office of Oblkoopinsoyuz and its artel “Inremstroy” and “Kooperator.”

In 1912, the owners were V. and Kh. Duvarzhdoglu. In this one-story building was a Duvardzhoglu artificial mineral and fruit water factory established by Christopher, the son of the owner of a trading house of “Duvardzhoglu” sweets. The factory produced “sitronat” and “Italian orandzhata.”

По плану застройки города предполагалось наличие торговой оси города. Эту роль должен был играть Александровский проспект, связывающий одесский порт через Военный спуск с крупнейшими рынками Одессы: Греческим рынком (на площади Греческой) и Старым рынком (площадь Старобазарный сквер). В начале XIX века, как часть Старого рынка, формируется будущая достопримечательность Одессы — Привоз. Название логично — здесь торговали привозным товаром, что называется «с колёс»: с возов, фур и прочего. Весь XIX век Привоз представлял собой довольно грязную, не замощённую площадку, без каких-либо капитальных строений, которые помешали бы повозкам и биндюгам, на чем торговля с колес закончилась бы. Но все же необходимость в минимальном обустройстве была явной. И в 1913 г. по проекту Ф. П. Нестурха на Привозе был построен специальный «Фруктовый пассаж». Trade Fruit Passage, 1914–1916, architect F. Nestrukh. The history of “Privoz” is directly connected with the history of trade origin in Odessa. According to the construction plan of the city, the presence of commercial axis of the city was proposed. This role was for Aleksandrovskiy Avenue to play connecting the port of Odessa through the Voyenny Descent with the largest Odessa markets: the Grecheskiy Market (Grecheskaya Square) and the Old Market (Starobazarny Public Garden Square). In the beginning of the 19th century, the future place of interest in Odessa — Privoz was shaping as a part of the Old Market. The name is logical — people traded imported goods there, as 47

Но как только он вышел из зверинца, его внимание привлекли фруктовые лавки. В газете «Большевистское знамя» было сказано следующее: «… передвигаясь вдоль Фруктового ряда, Мурза с аппетитом съел несколько яблок, достал хоботом из бочки соленые огурцы, отведал несколько кочанов свежей капусты, полакомился сушеными фруктами». После лакомку Мурзу, отловили и в симферопольский зоопарк все же отвезли. Но история запомнилась. А Фруктовый пассаж по-прежнему встречает одесситов и гостей города фруктами, овощами, да и всем, чем придётся. И мы вновь восхищаемся, впечатляемся, облизываемся и торгуемся. О Привозе, как и об Одессе надо говорить только стихами. Это и сделал Э. Багрицкий в 1928 г. Меня еда арканом окружила, Она встает эпической угрозой, И круг ее неразрушим и страшен, Испарина подернула ее... И в этот день в Одессе на базаре Я заблудился в грудах помидоров, Я средь арбузов не нашел дороги, Черешни завели меня в тупик, Меня стена творожная обстала, Стекая сывороткой на булыжник, И ноздреватые обрывы сыра Грозят меня обвалом раздавить. Так заканчивается улица Преображенская, соединяющая море с Привозом, коммерцию с литературой, дворцы с одноэтажными домами. Одесситов — с прошлым и настоящим.

they say “right from wheels”: from cartloads, wagons and other. All 19th century Privoz was a rather dirty, not paved ground, without any capital structures that would prevent wagons and roughnecks, on what trade with wheels would have ended.

Yet the need for a minimum arrangement was obvious. And in 1913, a special “Fruit Passage” was designed by F. Nesturkh and built at Privoz. It consisted of four two-story buildings, connected by arches with forged gates that were decorated with cast iron vases of fruit. Every building floor had a suite of rooms consisting of ten commercial premises in the first (today rebuilt) deep and capacious cellars.

And on March 31, 1941 there was a funny story, describing also the “Fruit Passage”.

A four year old baby elephant Murza was transported from the Odessa zoo to the Simferopol one. But as soon as he came out of the zoo, his attention was attracted by fruit shops. But as soon as he came out of the zoo, his attention was attracted by fruit shops. The newspaper “The Bolshevik banner” stated: “... moving along Fruit rows Murza ate with appetite a few apples, took pickles from the barrel with his trunk, tasted a few heads of fresh cabbage, and made a feast of dried fruit.” After that the gourmand Murza was caught and yet taken to the Simferopol zoo. But the story stayed in people’s memory.

And the Fruit Passage still meets Odessites and city visitors with fruits, vegetables, and everything it has. And again we admire, impress, lick our lips and bargaining. One should speak about Privoz as well as about Odessa — only in verse. So E. Bagritsky did in 1928.

She rises as a giant, epic threat, Her clasp is indestructible and dire, She lies and waits, exuding perspiration... ...On that day in Odessa at the market, I lost my way amidst tomato piles, I ran astray in watermelons maze, Sweet cherries led me to a cul-de-sac, I was immured within the walls of curd, Whose oozing whey had moistened cobblestones, And porous cliffs of yellow ripened cheese...
