THE STORY OF CROWN COLLEGE For over a century, Crown College has been preparing Christians to serve and influence the world.

Founded in 1916 by Reverend J. D. Williams, the College began with four students who wanted to study the Bible. It quickly blossomed and grew into a training school, eventually becoming known as St. Paul Bible Institute and establishing a solid reputation as a leader in the Bible college movement throughout the Midwest.

By 1924, enrollment grew to 152 students; today, it is nearly 1,500. In the late 1950s, the name was changed to St. Paul Bible College. Accreditation was granted to the College in 1975 by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. The College resided in St. Paul, Minnesota, for over 50 years. In 1970, as the College grew, it moved to its present location just west of Minneapolis, near the communities of Waconia and St. Bonifacius. Nestled among the rolling hills of one of the most lakedotted regions of Minnesota, the beautiful campus offers an inviting place for learning and growth.

Over the past few decades, the College expanded its curriculum with the introduction of many new majors and areas of study; the campus also grew with the addition of several housing facilities. In 1992, the name was changed to Crown College. That same year Crown launched its adult degree completion program, EXCEL, with 53 adult students taking classes in its two new programs. This program grew into what is now known as the School of Online Studies and Graduate School with over 600 students enrolled in 30 online programs.

Today, Crown has grown to offer over 50 different degree programs, has 18 NCAA-Division III athletic teams, and enrolls students from across the nation and over 10 countries around the world. Recognized as one of the most affordable private Christian colleges in the Midwest and ranked nationally as one of the top online Christian colleges, the College continues its mission of preparing Christians for leadership and service.

Of the more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions of higher education in the United States, Crown is one of 118 intentionally Christ-centered institutions included as a member of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU). It is also one of four colleges affiliated with The Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in the United States.

The mission of Crown College is to provide a biblically-based education for Christian leadership in The Christian and Missionary Alliance, the church-at-large, and the world. As such, we exist to fulfill Jesus’ final request on earth, The Great Commission:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Crown Him the Lord of Love; behold His hands and side; Those wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified.

No angels in the sky can fully bear that sight, But downward bend their burning eyes at mysteries so bright.

Crown Him the Lord of years, the Ruler of all time, Creator of the rolling spheres, unspeakably sublime All hail! Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me; Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity.

REFLECTION SPEAKERS School of Arts & Sciences Student Reflection Speaker: Ms. Lauren Usherwood has completed her B.S. in Science Education and is an Honors Program Scholar. She is the daughter of Terry and Angie Usherwood. She grew up in Emily, MN, where she kept company with books, plants, and summer campfires. She is a curious polymath who enjoys a good dose of sarcasm and quick wit. Last fall, Lauren had the privilege to study history and theology at Oxford University in England. After graduation, she plans to marry Crown alumnus Marcus Dip Silas, and the two of them will make their home in Malaysia.

School of Online Studies & Graduate School Student Reflection Speaker: Mrs. Kera Adeola is graduating with a M.A. in Counseling. She grew up in Bemidji, MN, and currently resides in Hopkins, MN, with her husband. Kera completed her B.S. in Youth/Social Ministry with a minor in Alcohol and Drug Counseling from Crown College in 2016. After graduation, Kera worked at Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge as a licensed alcohol & drug counselor for almost three years and worked as a graduate assistant at Crown while completing her master’s degree. Currently, Kera works full-time at Crown College in a variety of roles including academic advisor, counseling internship coordinator, mental health practitioner in the Counseling Center, and adjunct faculty member. Kera is passionate about investing in the lives of others, reading great books, and following Jesus Christ wholeheartedly.

Crown College President: Dr. D. Joel Wiggins has served as President since July 2013. He has sixteen years of pastoral ministry experience in Chicagoland, Northern Virginia, and Omaha. He also invested sixteen years in leading two business incubators in Austin, TX, and Lenexa, KS, and launched an angel investor network in Kansas City. Dr. Wiggins holds a B.A. in History from Crown College, a D.Min. from Trinity International University, and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from The University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children and one grandchild.

Commencement Speaker: Mr. Rob Vischer is the Dean and Mengler Chair in Law at the University of St. Thomas Law School. His scholarship explores the intersection of law, faith, and professional identity. Mr. Vischer’s books include Conscience and the Common Good and Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Morality of Legal Practice. He has a B.A. from the University of New Orleans and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He lives in Minneapolis, MN, with his wife and three daughters.

GRADUATION HO N O R S Baccalaureate graduates who have completed a specified amount of work at Crown College are awarded graduation honors based on the cumulative grade point average. Specific criteria can be found in the Crown College catalogs. Graduates receiving honors are presented with a gold cord to wear at Commencement. Actual graduation honors may be adjusted for those yet to complete final course requirements.

Crown College is proud to recognize its graduating veterans and military members with a red, white, and blue regalia cord.

The cord colors replicate those of our nation’s flag to denote the valor, excellence, and sacrifice these individuals have exemplified in their service to the United States Armed Forces.

ACADE MIC AT T IR E The custom of wearing academic gowns and hoods dates from the twelfth century when a long gown and cowl (similar to the academic hood of today) were worn by clerics and scholars in unheated buildings. Today academic regalia signifies scholastic achievement.

Bachelors’ gowns are made with pointed sleeves; Masters’ gowns are made with long closed sleeves; Doctors’ gowns have velvet panels down the front and velvet bars on round and open sleeves.

The size and shape of the hood distinguishes the degree with a doctoral hood being the largest. The color used in the velvet border of the hood indicates the field. The colors in the lining of the hood indicate the college or university which confers the degree.

Members of the Board of Trustees wear doctoral gowns during their term of office along with the black mortarboard worn by all participants.
