JANUARY 2026

For over six decades, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation has been the island's steadfast guardian protecting open spaces, restoring vital ecosystems, and connecting our community to the land we love.
Today,we stand at a pivotal moment. As climate change reshapes our coastlines,as development pressure intensifies, and as the ecological challenges grow more complex, our work has never been more critical.
The Milestone Center represents our commitment to meet this moment. To not just continue our work, but to strengthen it.This is our opportunity to ensure that the science guiding Nantucket's conservation is as sophisticated as the ecosystems we protect. That our research doesn't just respond to challenges but anticipates them. That the experts doing this work have stable housing to build careers here. And that the next generation inherits not just protected land, but the knowledge to steward it wisely.
The Milestone Center will serve as a catalyst for research and education that will help deepen our impact on the health of our island’s open spaces.

With more than 9,000 acres under our care, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation is the island’s largest landowner. This makes NCF the primary steward of the island's ecological health and natural heritage.Every acre represents a commitment to the island's environmental future. This responsibility encompasses:

Every habitat type found on the island, from coastal dunes and salt marshes to sandplain grasslands and forests, each demanding specialized stewardship strategies, informed by innovative ecological research
Over 100 miles of trails and 17 miles of coastline maintained year-round for public access while protecting sensitive species and fragile ecosystems from overuse and degradation

A dedicated team of 25 year-round professionals, supported by 8-10 seasonal employees, all working to meet the complex demands of islandwide conservation
Six decades of strategic land protection through more than 200 acquisitions, from half-acre parcels to 800-acre landscapes

Throughout our 60-year history,NCF has demonstrated effective,science-based conservation. This reflects dedicated expertise, strategic planning, and disciplined execution. The Milestone Center builds directly on this foundation of success.
Purpose-built facilities will enable us to do what we do best with greater efficiency and scale.Recent accomplishments demonstrate both our results and how enhanced infrastructure will amplify our impact:

Windswept Bog Restoration: Restored over 40 acres of degraded cranberry bog to native wetland habitat, creating critical breeding grounds for rare species while improving water quality.Integrated facilities will enable our ecologists and land managers to implement complex restoration projects more efficiently.
Medouie Creek salt marsh and oyster reef restoration: Pioneered living shoreline techniques that protect vulnerable salt marsh habitats,a model now informing coastal resilience across Nantucket.Enhanced lab facilities will allow on-site water quality testing and analysis to track restoration success and adapt management strategies immediately.

Native seed collection and propagation: NCF systematically collects seed from over 100 native species annually, growing thousands of plants for restoration projects on our properties and beyond.Expanded greenhouse infrastructure will dramatically increase our capacity to supply restoration projects and ensure genetic integrity.
Year-round environmental education: NCF hosts hundreds of excursions and events annually across properties that welcome thousands of visitors. Dedicated indoor and outdoor education spaces will expand year-round programming, deepen school partnerships, and provide meaningful conservation learning experiences for islanders.

For decades,NCF's vital work has been dispersed across multiple locations ecologists working from makeshift spaces, land managers coordinating from separate facilities, educators adapting wherever room allows. This fragmentation, while manageable, limits our potential.
The Milestone Center addresses this directly.By bringing our entire team under one roof at a strategic, central location,we will transform our operational capacity: research findings inform land management, educational programming draws directly from fieldwork, and decisions are informed by direct input from scientists, land managers, and educators. When our teams work side-by-side,collaboration becomes seamless and our teams achieve their full potential.

Improved and centralized research infrastructure including on-site laboratory equipment, expanded greenhouse facilities, and herbarium collections
Enhanced collaboration across teams with ecologists, land managers, and educators working from one home base
Expanded programming capacity with flexible meeting spaces, classroom areas, and presentation facilities
“Not only has NCF been instrumental in conserving vast swaths of land for everyone to enjoy, but their stewardship of their properties is unparalleled. The addition of the Milestone Research Center at this juncture is perfect for the support of these efforts and so much more. ”
Pam Murphy,Executive Director, Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket

Today,NCF ecologists conduct extensive fieldwork, but lack dedicated laboratory space for analysis. The Milestone Center’s Ecological Research Laboratory will unlock new potential.Specialized science facilities will expand the capacity of our ecology staff, onisland partners, and visiting researchers to conduct analyses on-site,accelerate project timelines, and strengthen collaborative efforts to address the environmental and climate challenges facing Nantucket.

Conservation succeeds when the community understands and participates in protecting the land they call home.NCF offers free,year-round programming guided walks, ecological workshops, wellness experiences, specialized seminars, and more all with the intention of connecting people to Nantucket’s natural world.
Currently,NCF is constrained by limited indoor space, inadequate facilities for handson learning, and no dedicated space for year-round educational programming. The Milestone Center will transform our educational capacity and allow us to enhance programming for all ages and experience levels.

Flexible indoor education space for lectures, workshops, and collaborative programming with island non-profit partners
Hands-on learning opportunities for Nantucket's year-round students, providing access to working scientists, research equipment, and realworld conservation projects that transform the abstract to tangible
Outdoor learning laboratories including native plant demonstration gardens and constructed wetlands that serve as living classrooms
Year-round programming hub that serves diverse audiences, creating pathways for the island community to engage with conservation
“NCF’s
Milestone Center will be a transformational resource for Nantucket students...I look forward to when our students can take advantage of this unique space and the programming that will be offered there.”
Anne Broadus,Head of Lower School,Nantucket New School

Nantucket's conservation work depends on experienced professionals who commit to year-round island life, but the island's housing crisis threatens our ability to retain the expertise we need.We cannot responsibly and adequately steward 9,000 acres if our workforce faces constant housing instability.
Retaining institutional knowledge, recruiting specialized talent, and maintaining operational continuity depend on providing our team with secure housing. The Milestone Center's housing component is not an amenity it is essential to ensure that the people protecting Nantucket's future can build stable lives on island.

Over 40% of NCF's 25 year-round employees currently rely on Foundation-provided housing or experience housing instability in one of the nation's most expensive real estate markets
Three modest two-family homes will provide stable,long-term housing for six existing year-round employees, helping to meet our immediate need
