The Milestone Center is more than a milestone-it’s the home for the next generation of conservation on Nantucket.
The Center will include housing for NCF staff, as well as a LEEDcertified research and education center to enhance our ecological research, foster community engagement, and further support our land management, all for the public benefit of the island.
The Milestone Center will serve as a catalyst for research and education that will help us deepen our impact on the health of our island’s open spaces with:
LEED-certified Research Facility
Community Engagement & Education Spaces
Stable and Secure Housing for NCF Personnel
Since 1963, the Foundation has been at the forefront of stewarding and protecting Nantucket’s ecosystems while serving as a resource for all Nantucket residents and visitors. The Milestone Center is a natural evolution of our work, providing affordable housing options for our employees, a dedicated space to expand our research capabilities and educational outreach, and remaining steadfast in our mission of land protection and stewardship.
As stewards of over 9,000 acres of land, 17 miles of coastal shoreline, and 100 miles of trails, NCF is committed to ensuring that any new infrastructure aligns with the organization’s conservation values. The Milestone Center will be carefully designed to harmonize with its surroundings while minimizing environmental and visual impact.

Our research impacts Nantucket and beyond. Key projects demonstrating our leadership in ecological research include the Windswept Bog Restoration, oyster reef and saltmarsh restoration at Medouie Creek, native seed propagation projects, and endangered sandplain grassland restoration.
By elevating our science infrastructure, we will attract leading investigators and graduate students to conduct and collaborate with our staff ecologists on environmental research. This investment will enable us to facilitate more comprehensive studies, forge stronger partnerships with top academic and community institutions, and draw top-tier talent.
Our approach will solidify our position as a leader in ecological research and strengthen our collaborative efforts to address the impact of changes in the environment.

NCF is proud to invest in facilities that will significantly benefit the community. The new Center will provide dedicated lab space for staff, visiting research fellows, and island partners.
The Research & Education Center’s main level will be 10,000 square feet, and the building is engineered to optimize functional space by incorporating below-grade and external programming features.
Carefully sited on previously disturbed space in the Milestone Cranberry Bog property, the Milestone Center will serve as a hub for research, environmental education, and community engagement, supporting our broadened scope of conservation work for the health of the island.
A LEED-certified Research & Education Center will serve as a resource for delivering on our mission and strategic priorities.

Increasing housing capacity will help to alleviate the island’s housing pressures and guarantee reliable, affordable living options for NCF personnel now and in the years to come. Both the Center and the housing will be fully donor funded.
