13th ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, Conference & Exhibition Sees Great Turnout!

The 13th ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, Conference & Exhibition was held on April 23 – 25, 2018 in Narita, Japan.

The event, hosted by Narita International Airport Corporation and organized by ACI Asia-Pacific, welcomed over 500 delegates from over 40 countries. The event featured 50 speakers from all over the world, covering a wide range of topics on airport business and operations.

The official opening on April 24 was attended by Mr. Kazuo Yana, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan, Mr. Wataru Takahashi, Chiba Prefectural Vice-Governor, Mr. Makoto Natsume, President & CEO of Narita International Airport Corporation and Mr. Seow Hiang Lee, President of ACI Asia-Pacific.

Mr. Natsume thanked the distinguished guests and expressed NAA’s great privilege for the opportunity to host the assembly and extend their hearty welcome to the participants, as prelude to Narita Airport’s 40th anniversary in May. He wished the participants a pleasant and fruitful assembly to feel and experience the four pillar concepts of their airport: “applying the cutting-edge technology”, “in preparation for hosting the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics games”, “support to promote inbound tourism” and “strengthen Narita Airport’s competitive advantage and role”.

He closed his welcome speech by stressing that most importantly, NAA will continue to place importance on the rapport with the various stakeholders, strive to offer an airport that is safe and convenient and chosen by its customer.

Also speaking at the official opening, Mr. Seow Hiang Lee, President of ACI Asia-Pacific thanked the host, Narita International Airport for their gracious hospitality and support. He also thanked delegates for their support in establishing the event as one of the signature events in the region, in which airports, airlines, regulators and industry associations are gathered from around the world. He anticipated the two days of discussions and networking opportunities would generate innovative prospects for ACI members and business partners.

He also commented on the outlook of the industry and how Asia-Pacific, including the Middle East, is one of the fastest growing regions, characterized by its diversity, economically and geographically. ACI remains committed to maintaining and enhancing aviation safety and security, and will work closely with ICAO, regulators and industry stakeholders to address the challenges that lay ahead.

Mr. Kazuo Yana, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan and Mr. Wataru Takahashi, Chiba Prefectural Vice-Governor also warmly welcomed the delegates from around the world to attend this important aviation event in Chiba Prefecture.

The welcome reception was held on April 23, also ushered in the official opening of the exhibition which drew a recordbreaking number of exhibitors, ranging from world-class airports, to leading service providers and suppliers, featuring the latest products, services and technologies offered in the airport industry.

Mr. Futoshi Osada, Senior Executive Vice President of Narita International Airport Corporation passed the flag to Mrs. Vivian Cheung, Deputy Director of Aviation Development, Airport Authority Hong Kong at the Closing Ceremony.

The next ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly will coincide with the ACI World Annual General Assembly and will be held in Hong Kong on April 2 – 4, 2019, hosted by Airport Authority Hong Kong.

Top global aviation leaders set to headline 28th ACI EUROPE/World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition in Brussels

A compelling lineup of top airport and aviation industry CEOs has been assembled to headline the Airports Council International (ACI) World and ACI EUROPE annual conference to be hosted by Brussels Airport, from 18-20 June.

Registration for the conference is now open.

This year's conference theme is "Airports as Brands and Businesses" and aims to address to the consequences of the ongoing evolution of the airport industry into companies building brand relationships with air travellers.

The event will also expose the challenges facing the aviation industry to respond to the increasing need for additional airport capacity to accommodate the growth in the global demand for air services.

Conference attendees will hear and discuss how leaders in the industry plan to meet this demand so as to enable communities around the world to reap the vital economic and social benefits that aviation brings. And how will airports do this while achieving the utmost in environmental stewardship, customer service and remain financially viable?

ACI Asia-Pacific elects New President and Board of Directors at its Regional Assembly in Narita, Japan ACI Asia-Pacific elected a new President and Board of Directors at its regional assembly held in Narita, Japan on April 24, 2018.

Mr. Seow Hiang Lee, CEO of Changi Airport Group was elected ACI Asia-Pacific President for a two-year term with immediate effect. Mr. Lee was appointed President in February 2018 to serve the unexpired term of Ms. Kerrie Mather, who retired at the end of January 2018.

Commenting on his new role as President of ACI Asia-Pacific, Mr. Lee said, “ACI has long been at the forefront in fostering cooperation among its member airports and other partners in world aviation and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the President of ACI Asia-Pacific region. I will continue to work closely with Patti and the Regional Board to ensure that ACI remains relevant to the changing needs of our members and contribute towards a safe, secure, efficient and environmentally sustainable air transport system. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Past President, Ms. Kerrie Mather for her contributions and her leadership in strengthening ACI Asia-Pacific, and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”

“I welcome Seow Hiang Lee as ACI Asia-Pacific’s new President,” said Patti Chau, Regional Director of ACI Asia-Pacific.

“He has been an active member of the ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Board since 2008 and brings with him a wealth of international aviation industry experience and expertise. ACI Asia-Pacific Takes Unified Stance - Creating Sustainable Infrastructure Development for Airports and the Community The 13th ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly took a unified stance to empower airports’ economics and environmental efforts with two resolutions adopted.

Ms. Patti Chau, Regional Director of ACI Asia-Pacific said, “As one of the most diverse regions in the world, economically and geographically, it is important to recognize that there is no one-size fits all solution on how airports should be run.

Airports should have the flexibility to determine the most appropriate charging system, ownership and management models to best serve and support their communities. Just as important, airports are encouraged to continue engaging in industry-led sustainable development initiatives such as the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, waste management and renewable energy strategies, not just as a means of responsibly protecting the environment but also for achieving cost savings in the long run.”

Resolution #1: Call for Support and Recognition to Create Fertile Ground for Sustainable Infrastructure Development to Serve and Support the Asia-Pacific Communities In 2017, air traffic in Asia-Pacific and Middle East reached approximately 3.3 billion passengers and is expected to double by 2029. To cope with the surging traffic, significant investment in airport infrastructure, operations and developments is needed.

Although the airport industry as a whole is profitable, as many as 66% of the airports in the world are loss-making.

Operators need to find a way for airport charges to sufficiently fund and cover their operations, ancillary services and capital costs. ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly called upon airports to promote transparency and consultation with airlines in determining the level of charges. Policy-makers are urged to recognize that airport should have the ability to make commercial and investment decisions and provide the right economic incentives for sustainable infrastructure development.

Airports should have the discretion and flexibility to meet and fund passengers’ facilities and service needs with the most appropriate charging system, ownership and management models best suit local circumstances while still being able to recover their costs and generate returns for their shareholders.

Ms. Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World said, “The diversity of airports in our Asia-Pacific region is mirrored in each country’s economic and infrastructure development. Even among airports within the same country, the needs and conditions they individually face can be vastly different. Requiring all airports to conform to any single particular model of ownership and management would significantly inhibit them from responding to the specific needs of their passengers and unique local challenges of growth. It is therefore essential that our airport members be allowed to be flexible in how they are managed to best serve their passengers’ and the economic needs of their local, regional, and national communities.

This is consistent with ACI World’s position for airports across the globe.”

Resolution #2: •

Call for Airports to Adopt Waste Management and Renewable Energy

According to the recent ACI Asia-Pacific Environment Survey, waste management and renewable energy are two of the environmental priorities for Asia-Pacific airports. Airports must ensure aviation environmental sustainability in response to the agreement made at the 21st Conference of Parties to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, held in Paris, France in December 2015.

The ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly called upon airports to enhance waste management innovatively in order to save costs and achieve the goal of zero waste. Airports were also called upon to consider renewable energy options in their operations to achieve carbon neutrality. Furthermore, airports should integrate waste management and renewable energy in the design of airport expansion projects. Finally, airports were encouraged to make use of ACI and ICAO guidance materials and tools to implement the two environmental priorities.

Asia-Pacific Airports Celebrate Environmental Achievements at ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly Fifteen Asia-Pacific airports received their Airport Carbon Accreditation and celebrated their environmental achievements at the 13th ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly. Airports recently accredited or upgraded under the programme were presented with Airport Carbon Accreditation certificates to recognize their initiatives and achievements in carbon reduction.

These airports represent more than 32% of air passenger traffic in our region and demonstrate their strong commitment to operate sustainably, contributing to a greener future. We look forward to seeing more airports in our region join the 235 airports worldwide in becoming Airport Carbon Accredited airports very soon.�
