WhileworkinginPlushEventsanddesign,Iwas resposibleforthedesignandexecutionof2 booths,sized3mx3mand6mx3mforourclients 1309studiosandPiecesbySK. Frominitialclientmeetingsandunderstanding thedeliverables,weworkedtoincludehighqualitymaterialsandfinishesandabilityto dismantleuponcompletionandre-useandrepurposealmostalloftheelementsforthierstore orforthenextexhibitionmakingitcost-effective andsustainable.

Combinedwithvigourousteameffortfor executiononsiteontime,wewereableto createamemorableandenjoyableexperience forallinvolvedinanenvironementwhichis usuallyfranticandtimeconstrained.

Startingfrominitialdesigndiscussion andconceptsketchesforSKwho gaveusadesignbriefbasedonher brand.

Wedevelopeditfurthuronastrict timelineof10daystoexecution.I laterdesignedin2Dand3Dbefore recievingthefinalapprovaland beginningthematerialandfurniture selections,themostimportantaspect beingintheelementsusedre-usability andpracticalitywhilefulfillingthebrief.

Facedwiththechallengesofthe plotwewereaskedtodesigna solutionbyourclientUnipolto integratecommunity,green mobilityandsolutionsfor surroundingareas.

Wedevelopedtheprojectas mixed-usedevelopmentfollowing aparticipatoryapproachwith interviewsandmeetingstobetter informourdecisionswhileincluding thecommunity.

Thebasicneedofthehourforthe peopleofAnegundiwasaddressed, shelterbeingmostimportantwith utilisationoflocalbuildingmaterials suchasstoneandlimeplasterto createauthentic,culturallyand climateappropriatebuiltforms. Ourinitialgoalofreaching100 homesexceededandallowedusto gobeyondourtargetandhelp evenmorepeople.(160houses) alongwithpublicspaces,existing craftunitsandstreetscapes.

‘Kashaya’Craftunitwasinan extremelypoorcondition,which wasoncethespacewhereartisans gatheredtoworkunderoneroof.

Eachspacewehadtodesignhad uniquechallenges,whilesome wereminorinterventionslike façadetreatment,othersconsisted ofreplacingentireroofsand requiredextrastructuralinspection forrestoration.Maintainingthe characterofthevillagewhilebeing sensitivetotheneedsofpeople wasfollowedforallourwork.

Theprojectbriefwastodevelop aconceptandvisualizethe furnitureandstoragesolutions fora3bhkspaceofacouple. Thethemechosenwas contemporarystyle,withneutral andnaturalearthtones.The approachwastocreatea functionalspacehighlighting naturallightandenhancethe existingarchitecturalelements foracomfy,affordableand invitingspace.

ASundaymorninginMalleswaramIwas welcomedmythearomaofsouthIndiandelicacies beingpreparedonalmosteverystreetcornerwith queuesbeyondthemainroad.Onawalkaround thisquaintpartofBangalore,itfascinatedmehow womenplayedamajorroleinthehistorythathas nowbecometheplacesomanycallhome. Malleswaram.Underthreataretheseveral historicallyandculturallysignificantspaces,eacha storypowerfulenoughtoinspiregenerations.Ifelt asenseofnostalgiaforaplaceIhaveneverbeen tobefore,maybeadesiretoconnectwiththepast oftheplace.Atrulyvividmemory.

Theonce-magnificentand closetoacentury-old,was razedtothegroundby privatedevelopers,and withthisthecityhaslost anothercharmingBritish bungalow,onceso ubiquitousintheGarden City.

ThewalkbeganfromSeva Sadan,anorphanagefor girlsandculturalcentre wherethemissionary workdoneforsocial reformsforwomenwhich beganin1930’scanstillbe seen.Severalschoolsand institutionscameupon thosegrounds.
