Started by cultural pathfinders Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, the Festival was initially organized to promote the revitalization of lower Manhattan through the lens of the arts.

3 According to Rosenthal, that mission has not changed over time. “It’s about community—the community of downtown and the community of New York. It’s about the community of filmmakers and audiences, and bringing audiences some new voices and diverse filmmaking.” At its center, she explained, the Festival’s mission is to unite the industry and community around the single idea of storytelling.

Jane Rosenthal

Having screened more than 1,000 films since its inception, Tribeca approaches this year’s Festival, which runs from April 20 – May 1, in dynamic stride. The 2011 lineup features work from some 102 directors representing 32 countries, including India, Iceland, Egypt, Spain, Haiti and Israel. Forty-five world premieres will be showcased among the 91 feature-length films—an elite squad considering the fact that a record number

“ n ew voices and diverse filmmaking” Billy corben LIMELIGHT

of 5,624 submissions were received for this year’s competition alone. If anything, the 2011 lineup is about risk-taking and diversity, and aims to present a fresh-eyed spectrum of cuttingedge world cinema against the backdrop of New York. Said Rosenthal, “In terms of the cultural landscape, we’re in one of the greatest cities in the world and have the best audiences in the world. So I think that’s fantastic for filmmakers.” The Festival is divided into two competitive categories, World Narrative and World Documentary. Some highlights include the cinema verité-influenced documentary Bombay Beach, as well as Koran By Heart, a documentary on the high-stakes Koran-recitation competition held in Cairo each year. Jesus Henry Christ, one of four films in this year’s selection associated

with the Festival’s nonprofit Tribeca Film Institute, stars Toni Collette as a boy-genius misfit’s struggling mom. Also screening is Grey Matter, one of the first feature-length films from Rwanda. The non-competitive Spotlight and Cinemania sections feature both established and up-andcoming voices as well as recognizable subject matter. A new section, Viewpoints, has been added to this year’s slate. Showcasing an even mix of features and documentaries, Viewpoints was founded on the premise of offering snapshot perspectives of distinctive narratives from around the world. Returning director Dori Berinstein described her documentary, Carol Channing: Larger Than Life, as “a story that simply had to be told. When I got to know Carol personally and realized that this legendary entertainer was as remarkable off-camera as on, I desperately wanted to capture her stories on film. At 90, she is an unstoppable megawatt dynamo.”

carol channing & Dori Berinstein Carol Channing: Larger Than Life

Another entertainment legend is spotlighted in Billy Corben’s Limelight, a behind-the-scenes look at the rise and fall of New York club lord Peter Gatien. Said Corben, “You have the story of one man, Peter Gatien, and his New York nightclub empire set against the Giuliani revolution that transformed the city. The arc of Gatien’s story perfectly parallels that of New York in the 1990s, and he was, in fact, collateral damage in this culture war.” British filmmaker Stevan Riley’s Fire In Babylon is a piercing work that traces the golden era of West Indian cricket against the challenging backdrop of the times. “The West Indies were unbeaten for 15 years straight and terrified the opposition with their innovation of all-out pace bowling,” Riley explained. “And it’s no accident that their cricket revolution in the ’70s and ’80s coincided with the explosion on the world scene of Caribbean artists such as Bob Marley and their shared mission for racial equality and civil rights.” Riley went on to commend the Tribeca Film

5 Festival for adhering to such a brave selection process. “Whereas others may checklist a film’s media friendliness or political persuasion, Tribeca seems to me to encourage more testy and adventurous work.” fire in babylon

Indeed, beyond merely entertaining audiences, part of the mission of the Festival is to enlighten, inspire and arouse thoughts and ideas through content that aspires to promote new visions of how the world is constantly being reshaped and transformed. “It’s always been about voices,” Rosenthal commented, “about the fact that film and art and music can take you places and explain points of view beyond where any politician can.” Added Berinstein, “Global storytelling is vital. It can increase our understanding and appreciation of the value of the human condition. The Tribeca Film Festival is on the forefront of bringing film to the world.” In addition to scouting for fresh talent, the Festival has a strong network of returning directors, actors and even music composers. By creating a community within a community, Tribeca nurtures the arts while cultivating and enabling the talent responsible for creating it. “We try to nurture all our alumni,” said Rosenthal, “that’s part of what festivals do.” From the talent’s perspective, Riley agreed. “Tribeca’s support structure and communication is also top-notch so you feel that you’re part of a community that is there to help you along.”

JESUS HENRY CHRIST

Looking back, Rosenthal recalled some of her personal Festival highlights. She described watching Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton and Hugh Grant ring in the inaugural year on the steps of City Hall. She also pointed to a few examples of overzealous audience participation—from a “drive-in” screening of Grease where attendees flocked to the show dressed as the film’s characters to a stunning panorama of 4,300 kids

dancing to ballroom music following a screening of Mad Hot Ballroom. Then there was the surprise appearance of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the President of Liberia, for a screening of Pray the Devil Back to Hell. One of Rosenthal’s most standalone memories, however, was pop legend Bono’s special guest spotlight. “When we did these concerts at Battery Park, Bono had basically promised to come. He ended up giving a speech instead of singing but he was quite magnificent,” Rosenthal admitted. “It was courageous and quite spectacular.” Since its inception, the Festival has hosted more than 3 million attendees and has generated an estimated $600 million in economic activity for the city of New York. When asked about future goals, Rosenthal said, “To keep doing what we’re doing, showing a diversified slate of pictures on as many different platforms as we can.” In true cinematic fashion, this year’s Festival will open with The Union, Cameron Crowe’s documentary about the iconic music visionary Sir Elton John. As a special bonus, the screening will be followed by a free live performance from the man himself.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH MY MOVIE PItCH

Every movie, from the biggest blockbuster to a shoestring short, starts with a kernel of an idea. That idea turns into a pitch and from there, movies are born. As a strident believer in the power of storytelling to unite filmmakers and audiences, American Express created My Movie Pitch. My Movie Pitch gives film enthusiasts the chance to share their ideas. By recording and submitting a 60-second pitch, contestants get a shot at seeing their idea on the big screen at the Tribeca Film Festival. Last June, over 2,000 fans pitched submissions to amexfilm.com, from which a panel of Tribeca Film directors picked the Grand Prize Winner. The 2010 winner, John Nash, is a 21-year-old student from Rockland County, NY who pitched The Awesome Adventures of Mr. Stache, which in his words is “a very serious drama about a man and his mustache.” We caught up with Jac Schaeffer, who adapted John’s pitch into a screenplay and directed the film Mr. Stache starring Rich Sommer and Amy Smart. Jac let us know how a 60-second pitch gets brought to life.

Jac, what attracted you to the project? I’ve always had a thing for mustaches! No, I have huge admiration for American Express and tremendous gratitude for their support of the Tribeca Film Festival, so I was honored when they asked me to participate in the project. I was completely charmed by John’s pitch and had so much fun bringing it to the screen.

How did you take a short pitch and turn it into a short film? The first thing I did was transcribe his pitch. I loved his assertion that the film would be a “very serious drama” about a mustache. It made me realize that the story is ultimately about acceptance. I just carved out a narrative structure that supported this heartfelt theme. It’s at once beautiful and tragic when a person loves someone for the one thing everyone else rejects.

Does the film hold true to the original idea? The first few lines of the narration are verbatim from John’s video. I wanted to retain as much of his unique voice and sensibility as I could. I like to think that the final product retains the same lovely intersection of humor and heart that is so evident in his video.

Maria my love Jasmine McGlade Chazelle Judy marte

backstage spotlight

Tribeca is premiering Maria My Love, a film from first-time director Jasmine McGlade Chazelle. In her words, it’s a “truthful and visceral film about a young woman torn apart by loss and put back together again by the people she meets during the course of one California spring.” The story revolves around Ana, a young woman played by two-time Spirit Award nominee Judy Marte.

JMC What first drew you to Maria My Love and the character of Ana? JM After I read it, I had a mix

For inside access to some of the Festival’s best new voices, American Express brought together four talent pairings to discuss the collaborative process and creative vision behind some of the most innovative cinema happening today. The following interviews feature behind-the-scenes conversations with new directors and seasoned talent, providing a unique insight into the inner workings of filmmaking. First-time director Jasmine McGlade Chazelle and Raising Victor Vargas alum Judy Marte discuss instinct in the editing suite, while Last Night director Massy Tadjedin and leading lady Keira Knightley talk about the nuances of relationships in connection to the film’s storyline. Each of these interviews takes us on an intimate backstage tour of just how independent cinema gets made.

of emotions. I laughed and cried and that’s usually what it takes with me. Plus, my mom is such a big part of my life and I wanted to do this for her—in honor of her. Now she gets to see it with me at the Festival and that’s so exciting!

JM Since we’re talking about Ana, why were you compelled to write her? JMC Ana’s very closed off. She hinders her own development by internalizing her suffering and shutting herself off from others. I wanted the people and the environment around her to be vibrant and vivid, so as to spur her back to life. JMC We made Maria My Love on a micro-budget. From your perspective as an actor, what were the challenges/benefits of shooting with limited resources?

JM It never seemed like we didn’t have money. Look at how it looks, it’s beautiful. Production is always going to have problems and it just depends on how you handle them. JM What’s the one important lesson you learned making Maria My Love? What advice do you have for first-time filmmakers who apply to Tribeca? JMC It may be a filmmaking basic, but it became extremely apparent that it’s not about a good take or a bad take; it’s about getting variety so you have options in the editing room. To filmmakers, I say don’t be afraid to trust others and listen to your instincts. It’s much easier to create a cohesive vision when you’ve found people you can trust and communicate with openly and with integrity.

Give up tomorrow

michael collins Marty syjuco

Massy tadjedin keira knightley

Give Up Tomorrow details the true story of Paco Larrañaga, a man accused of killing two sisters in the Philippines in 1997. First-time New York filmmakers Michael Collins (director) and Marty Syjuco (producer), talk about their sixyear journey bringing this story to the screen.

First-time director Massy Tadjedin brought together a Hollywood cast and made Last Night, a film about relationships—the ones we share and the ones we keep to ourselves. Massy and star, Keira Knightley, share their thoughts on the subject.

How did the two of you get involved in making this picture?

This movie isn’t usual movie relationship fare, but seems more about trust in the midst of temptation. Fair assumption?

MS Paco is my brother’s brotherin-law. When he was first accused, I wasn’t too worried. I thought Paco is being accused of this crime, but when all the information comes out, they’ll realize they’ve got the wrong guy.

MC At the end of the trial, Paco was sentenced to life in prison and that’s when he appealed to the Supreme Court, who ended up elevating his sentence to death by lethal injection and that’s when I got involved.

MS When Paco’s sentence was elevated, that’s when it shocked me into action.

MC I felt a sense of responsibility to help Paco find justice. Even though we had never made a film before, Marty and I took a leap of faith and found our way to the Philippines armed with a new camera and lots of hope. It’s a complicated story with such a dense plot, but also a human story. The film really unfolds as a murder mystery with heart and emotion.

MS It plays like a thriller; you can’t believe the plot points and twists and turns. This is real life—you can’t make it up.

How has this journey changed you? MS The cost of corruption and injustice stems from a flawed justice system and if we just accept it, it’ll always remain that way.

MC One thing that I learned is about the power of grassroots campaigns to really affect social change on a large scale. We got to see that play out first-hand in this case. MS We learned that your camera and documentary filmmaking are weapons to fight corruption and fight injustices. That’s what’s driven us for the past six years. In the end, I’m proud of the commitment we’ve had to this project no matter what. It’s a dream come true to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

MT A lot of movie relationships end impossibly well and don’t always mirror what actual relationships are like so, yeah, I guess it’s not standard movie fare in that regard. But, to me, it feels like real relationship fare, hopefully. KK I think that’s true. I loved the script because it didn’t impose a morality on the story. It reflected the messy nature of human wants and relationships and requires the audience to judge the characters based on their own experiences. I think in recent years there have been fewer films that want to reflect that mess. Can you talk about how Sam (Worthington) and Keira’s characters don’t seem to be the ones looking for trouble, instead it seeks them out? MT It certainly might seem that way, but we all still decide who we allow

into our lives. Trouble knocks on every door but the door still has to be opened. KK I don’t know if I agree with that. I think maybe you send out certain signals to the universe. If they really hadn’t been looking for it, I doubt it would have gone so far. Ask 10 different people and you’ll get 10 different answers. Where’s the line between toying with the idea of infidelity and it actually happening? MT I’m not sure I know, and I’m not sure I would have made the film if I did. There are miles to travel between considering it and acting on it but I think the considering can be equally damaging. KK I have no idea. That’s why it’s such an interesting subject. What kinds of stories came out on-set throughout production? KK Lots.

On Location

jesus henry christ Dennis lee toni collette

Based on director Dennis Lee’s Student Academy Award®-winning short from 2003, Jesus Henry Christ (JHC) is the story of Henry, a precocious boy conceived in a petri dish and raised by his radical feminist mother, played by Toni Collette. TC JHC was initially a short. How was the process of turning it into a feature? DL The short film was successful, so agents, producers and I wanted to capitalize on its success and have the feature version. Imagine my feigned shock when everyone thought my script was too this or too that to be made. Everyone but my manager, who pushed me to write and revise it. TC JHC is visually quite stylized. Did you see it this way as you penned it? DL I close my eyes and write what I see. I’m a very descriptive writer which, when writing a screenplay, is a bit of a no-no. But then, I usually want to direct what I’ve written and I want actors to visualize how the story will be told. TC How did you find your perfect Henry? DL Like anything in life—hard work and dumb luck. We auditioned countless Henrys and not one fit like Cinderella’s slipper. And then we

found Jason, who, in many ways, is Henry. DL Now looking at Henry and all your other movie offspring, what’s in your movie mom genes? All your kids are a little… off. TC Ha! I wouldn’t say off. I’d say unique. I gravitate towards themes of acceptance—being OK with not being considered normal. All of these kids feel they’re freaky and somewhat ostracized. By the end of their stories they’ve overcome that sense of not belonging by finding their place in the world. DL You always have the chance to play such different people. What do you love about your character Patricia? TC I admire her spunk. She’s strong and holds it together while resisting change her entire life. What I love even more is her reluctant and slow opening. She softens and allows change to flood her life, which redefines what family means to her.

onceived in part to give Lower Manhattan an economic and cultural boost after the devastation of 9/11, the Tribeca Film Festival has played a major role in the revitalization of its namesake neighborhood. Since then, the festival has expanded to include Chelsea and the East Village, and has generated an estimated $600 million for the city. Once characterized by crumbling industrial architecture and neglected streets, all three areas have become hot spots, brimming with exceptional places to eat, drink, shop and unwind—whether you have half an hour to kill before a screening or want to plan a full day around your festival itinerary. IN FOCUS: TRIBECA GRILL

When Drew Nieporent opened Montrachet in an obscure corner below Canal Street in 1985, it was an instant hit. One customer was so impressed, he asked the restaurateur to join him in a second venture. That customer was Robert De Niro. Tribeca Grill opened in 1990 in De Niro’s Tribeca Film Center and, naturally, attracted a starry crowd: Sean Penn, Christopher Walken and Bill Murray were among the investors. Some people dismissed it as a flash in the pan. “I still have the letters that say ‘Let’s see where you guys are 12 months from now,’ ” says Nieporent, who now has six restaurants in the area. Carved out of the Martinson Coffee factory, the quintessential Tribeca restaurant features exposed brick and the bar from iconic singles spot Maxwell’s Plum. While chef Stephen Lewandowski’s marketdriven contemporary American menu is always changing, regulars appreciate favorites such as the braised short rib and banana tart, and the renowned wine list includes bottles from its founding year. Yet the seminal eatery is helping to define the future. “Some of the greatest chefs in New York came out of the family tree of Tribeca Grill,” says Nieporent. “We’re going to stick with the formula that works, which is consistently good food and service.”

Andy Warhol hosted its opening bash in 1983, and stars such as Billy Idol and Grace Jones frequented the VIP room, but Limelight—the iconic nightclub housed in the former Church of the Holy Communion—closed in 2001. After brief resurrections as a nightspot, it had been empty for two years when entrepreneur Jack Menashe acquired the lease in 2009 to create a shopping destination. “The building was a mess,” he recalls, but refurbishment yielded exciting discoveries: “Removing layers of Sheetrock, we kept uncovering magnificent stained-glass windows and limestone archways,” he explains. Although locals were initially worried about the church’s new incarnation, Menashe says they were thrilled with the result: “It went from being dark and dreary to something bright and beautiful and fresh and architecturally inviting.” On the ground floor, the “festival of shops” evokes a European shopping arcade, and specialist food sections offer everything from artisan cheeses to gourmet brownies. Upstairs are areas devoted to beauty, jewelry and the home. This spring brings Cross Bar, a “nose-to-tail” pork restaurant from Todd English, and ten new fashion shops, including British label French Connection.

Central Park was an unprepossessing swamp and The New York Times was a start-up publication when Kiehl’s Pharmacy opened for business at the corner of 13th Street and Third Avenue in 1851. The apothecary-turned-cultskin-care-line, which remained in two families for almost 150 years, was acquired by cosmetics giant L’Oréal in 2000, but it is committed to its original values, explains Chris Salgardo, president of Kiehl’s USA. “Our roots as a corner neighborhood apothecary that opened 160 years ago are reflected in every aspect of our company today,” he says, “from the science and natural ingredients that help us create our efficacious products, to our commitment to one-on-one customer service that allows our representatives to ‘prescribe’ the correct products to our customers, to the community involvement and philanthropic mission to give back.” In fact, in 2009 the company refurbished its flagship to pay homage to its pedigree, including sprucing up the original fixtures and displaying items relating to its long history. In addition to best-selling products such as Ultra Facial Cream, Lip Balm #1 and Creme de Corps, the store sells flagship exclusives such as a razor, a bathrobe and T-shirts, and the collection will continue to grow.

On Tribeca Film Festival’s reach:

TALKING

One of the many great things the Tribeca Film Festival does for the neighborhood is that it attracts people from beyond the tri-state area, really from all over the world, to visit our neighborhood. The restaurant and shop owners that I know say the two weeks during the festival are great for business. And certainly, post-9/11, the Tribeca Film Festival has been a major force in helping to revitalize and rejuvenate the community.

On emerging filmmakers:

WITH

EDward BURNS Actor/Filmmaker/Tribeca Resident

One of the wonderful things about the Tribeca Film Festival is that it has always embraced emerging young filmmakers. As a filmmaker who got my start at a film festival, I know how important it is to be given the opportunity to screen your film in front of an enthusiastic and intelligent audience. Additionally, the Festival recognizes that Tribeca itself is a diverse community and offers a much wider spectrum of films than most festivals—ranging from films for the whole family to films for the most discerning cinephile.

On aspiring filmmakers: edward Burns is a face of film in New York, but in Tribeca he represents everything it stands for. We caught up with him to talk about the neighborhood and the role the Tribeca Film Festival plays in the business of filmmaking.

On living in the neighborhood: Ten years ago, I fell in love with the charm of Tribeca. The neighborhood was a quiet haven in the city with its cobblestone streets, turn-of-the-century warehouses and fantastic restaurants. Having seen the neighborhood change in the last decade, I can say that as a father, there is no better place in the city for raising a family. The development of Hudson River Park has been fantastic—it is a great neighborhood spot for kids and families. I definitely think Tribeca has everything a kid could ask for.

Now more than ever it’s easier for young filmmakers to get their films made, especially with the advances in camera and digital technology. But what was true 15 years ago still rings true today: make the movie you want to make, tell the story you want to tell. That’s the story that will find the audience.

On his upcoming movie: Almost all the scenes from my new film, Newlyweds, were filmed in Tribeca. While walking around my neighborhood over the last 10 years, I have seen streets and locations that I knew I would want to put in one of my films someday. This is the film where I do that.

The most groundbreaking act to emerge from the New York hip-hop scene of the early ’90s, A Tribe Called Quest electrified a generation with its brand of jazz-infused beats and intelligent rhymes before dramatically disbanding in ’98. Featuring De La Soul, Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, Ludacris, Beastie Boys, and more.

The rusting relic of a failed 1960s development boom, the Salton Sea is a barren California landscape and symbol of the failure of the American Dream. Using a stylized amalgam of nonfiction and choreographed dance set to music by Beirut and Bob Dylan, Bombay Beach revisits this fruitful terrain to find a motley cast including a bipolar seven-year-old, a lovelorn football star, and an octogenarian poet-prophet—creating a moving, distinctive, and slightly surreal experience.

In 1997, Paco Larrañaga was arrested for the murder of two sisters on a provincial island in the Philippines. Over the next 13 years, his case became the highest profile in the nation’s history, and the focal point in a far-reaching exposé of a gross miscarriage of justice. At once an intriguing murder mystery, a courtroom drama, and a stunning indictment of national corruption, Give Up Tomorrow is an enraging true crime chronicle.

How do you cope with being broke after having lived a life of luxury and privilege? This is the fundamental question facing spoiled Anne Mette and her mother, a once-rich family now living off a small pension and struggling to adapt to their new situation in a coastal Portuguese hamlet. A Grey Gardens for the current financial era, The Good Life is a character study at turns touching and frustrating, but ultimately poignant.

The Furlong men have unusual powers. Grandpa goes blind when he thinks of sex, Dad fries electronics when afraid… but young James has a more fearsome power. After losing everyone he loves, he flees to the woods to live alone. When he’s discovered by a beautiful teenage cancer patient, their romance leads James on a journey back to civilization. Agnès Merlet (Artemisia) directs this whimsical fable about living with the curses—and blessings—we inherit.

From the director of 2002 hit L’Auberge Espagnole comes a financial-era drama with a biting comic edge. When single mom France loses her factory job, she is forced to take a gig as a housekeeper and nanny for Steve, a hotshot Parisian stockbroker. As France and Steve grow closer, both of their minds may be opening to each other’s worldviews—until France makes an unsettling discovery about Steve and events snowball toward a shocking finale.

In this sweet family drama, a devout Catholic (Kathleen Turner) in the running for the coveted Catholic Woman of the Year award must prove that her family actually conforms to the image of “the perfect family” as envisioned by the church—an image she’s put forth with considerable effort her whole life. Also starring Emily Deschanel, Jason Ritter, Richard Chamberlain, and Michael McGrady.

A psychotic serial killer on the loose in the woods crosses paths with a group of unsuspecting teenagers. Soon people are dying one by one… but the bad guy isn’t who you think. Turning genre conventions on their head with a smart script and plenty of unexpected scares, Rabies is a surprising debut worthy of its mantle as Israel’s first-ever slasher horror film.

Two pathologically shy neurotics connect through a love of chocolate in this delectably witty romantic comedy. For Angelique and Jean-René, the social world is one big emotional minefield best avoided. She’s a reclusive candymaker looking for a job, and he runs a chocolate factory in dire need of her savant-like skill. Fate may bring them together, but they’ll need to overcome their common fears to find fairy-tale love.

RenÉe

In French with subtitles.

Directed by actor/director Peter Mullan (My Name Is Joe, The Magdalene Sisters), NEDS takes place in the gritty and savage world of 1970s Glasgow. On the brink of adolescence, John McGill is a bright and sensitive boy. He’s eager to learn and full of promise, but with no one willing to give him a chance, young John descends into a violent life of crime. NEDS is an intense and tragic portrayal of the loss of hope.

Samuel (Gilles Lellouche) is studying to be a nurse and his very pregnant wife, Nadia (Elena Anaya), is relegated to bed rest. But when Nadia is kidnapped right in front of him, to get her back he’ll have to free a man under police surveillance from the hospital in three hours. Point Blank is a taut suspensethriller that gets the adrenaline-inducing action going right from the start and never eases up.

Despite his alpha-male reputation, tennis ace Dick Raskind always felt different from other guys. But it wasn’t until his 40s, after getting married and having a son, that Dick was reborn as Renée Richards. Renée was still dynamite on the tennis court, but being the first transsexual player in the women’s US Open would put her in a spotlight she—or her troubled son—couldn’t escape. This fascinating doc is a testament to both personal and athletic perseverance.

An original and delightfully gruesome slasher film, Saint reimagines jolly old Saint Nick as a murderous bishop fulfilling a grisly prophecy under the December 5 full moon. Full of creative yuletide horror, Saint is a fun chiller that follows local teen Frank as he sets out on a bloody, high-energy battle to save Amsterdam from the wrathful “Sinterklaas” and his minions.

For 20 years, Jimmy (Ron Eldard) lived his rock-and-roll fantasy as a roadie for Blue Oyster Cult, but the glory days are gone, and Jimmy just got the boot. Returning to his childhood home in Queens, he finds his mom teetering toward dementia and his high school crush (Jill Hennessy) married to his still-nettling childhood rival (Bobby Cannavale). Building a future means confronting the relationships of the past in this heartfelt coming-of-middle-age tale.

When 15-year-old Emma lands a competitive spot on the equestrian acrobatics team, she is taken under the wing of a pretty, slightly older teammate, Cassandra. The two begin an intense relationship where the rules of the game blur as psychological stakes get higher and higher. Lisa Aschan’s award-winning directorial debut explores the all-consuming world of teen female friendships through naturalistic direction, evocative imagery, and engrossing performances.

This is achieved through the use of text, the presence of previously filmed “found” footage, a scenic train ride bleeding into digital pixels, single frame printing devices, evocations of 9/11, a tribute to a deceased filmmaker, peripheral vision, recall of sleep via animation, seascape imagery folding back on itself in time, and bittersweet remembrances of now-extinct Kodachrome film stock. AMPLIFY THE MESSAGE: SOCIAL MEDIA fri 4/22 2:30 PM sva-2

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, GetGlue, Foursquare. Social media has changed the way we interact with the world around us. How should producers and directors engage with this new interactive audience and how much of an impact does this audience have on a movie’s success or failure on multiple platforms? Join us for a discussion on the importance of this growing medium with Rider Strong, writer/director of The Dungeon Master, Howard Tullman, President and CEO of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, and others. Meet the Documentary Broadcasters sat 4/23 2:30 PM sva-2

ARE DOCUMENTARY FILMS CHANGING THE WORLD? sun 4/24 2:30 PM sva-2

Documentary films unveil important truths, challenge assumptions, and often compel audiences to take action. Many of today’s filmmakers are faced with an additional challenge—how do they ensure their film will have a significant impact on the public and on the policies their story highlights? The collaboration of filmmakers with NGOs and community groups has created a new distribution model, and the measure of success now reaches past sales to changes in public perception and policy. Join Michael Collins, director of Give Up Tomorrow, filmmaker and activist Abigail Disney, and other filmmakers, distributors, and community groups for a discussion on the new paths of distribution for nonfiction films and the ways filmmakers and their subjects are making their voices heard.

One of the most important aspects of realizing your independent feature is determining the right look. How will you capture your images and bring the script to the screen in a meaningful, visual way? However, many filmmakers are able to get the most out of their budgets while still shooting film.
