Food – The Basic Need that Fosters Our Future

T

hose in our community who struggle with hunger aren’t always who you think they are. That’s something we say a lot at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and we see the evidence all around us.

“Hunger in America 2014,” a new study released by Feeding America, shows that 46.5 million people in the U.S are served each year by its nationwide network of 200 food banks, including the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB).

Those served include 12 million children and 7 million seniors.

That comes out to 1 in 7 Americans who turn to food banks each year for assistance.

Difficult Choices For ACFB, the report shows more than 755,000 clients a year rely on our 600+ partner agencies for food assistance across our 29-county service area. These are families who are working, but just can’t make ends meet. These are

folks who are struggling with medical issues and have to choose between a doctor’s visit or prescriptions and the food they’ll eat that night.

These are our neighbors who are having to decide if they’ll pay the electric bill or buy food.

The study shows that, each year, about 76 percent of the people served by the Food Bank have to choose between paying for food or utilities. A full 79 percent of households surveyed reported using multiple strategies for getting enough food, including eating food past its expiration date, watering down food or drinks and pawning or selling personal property. That’s a lot of energy and time spent on trying to cover the basic need of getting enough food to eat.

Food, A Transformative Tool Many of us disagree on the causes of hunger, but we can all agree that we want a prosperous economy, a strong workforce and a good education system for our kids.

So, I would say, that if we truly want to prepare our future workforce, build into our kids the muscle they need to succeed in life, and nurture a community that fosters growth and prosperity – then we need to feed people.

Food is not only a basic need, but a transformational tool to bring communities together to create, grow and develop a healthy place to live, work, succeed and enjoy.

Not having enough food is a distraction that keeps people from doing the things they need to do to get up on their feet and stay there. If they

can’t get basic needs met adequately, then they aren’t going to have enough time to work on the things that could truly better and improve their lives in lasting ways.

So food is that tool. Improving access to food is the key to helping the larger community succeed and prosper. And helping get more food into the hands of those that need it truly makes a measurable, visible difference. Not just in the lives of those who feel fed, but in the fabric of our neighborhoods, schools, municipalities, governments, leadership and overall community.

Making Progress In fact, hunger is an issue, unlike others, that collaboration and collective effort can truly change and even fix. This is an issue that we here at the Food Bank see progress around every day and an issue where a community can come together and make a real difference.

I urge you to take a look at the ways that you can help improve food access throughout metro Atlanta. Support your local food pantry, come volunteer with us, make a donation and help raise the awareness that having enough food truly matters.

Coming together as a community, we can get people fed and we can look forward to seeing the progress that comes when hunger ends.

Grant Will Help Food Bank Partner Provide More Nutritious Food Eileen, a mom and grandmom, has held a steady job at the same local fast food restaurant for 22 years, but even working six days a week, she struggles to provide food for her family. Thankfully, she has found help through the Southeast Gwinnett Co-Op. “I don’t know what I would do without this place,” said Eileen. “They provide us with a week’s worth of groceries once a month. It’s a blessing.”

A Million Ways George Spirito of ACFB partner agency St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, was delighted to bring back a sizeable load of watermelons for the people he serves in Jonesboro.

The melons were among more than 50,000 pounds of produce purchased through a donation from Outshine Fruit Bars “Million Ways to Shine” summer campaign.

Donations from the campaign enabled food banks across the nation to distribute more than a million pounds of produce.

Volunteer Finds Her Best Reward in Helping Those in Need May French began volunteering with the Atlanta Community Food Bank in 2011 when she joined her SunTrust co-workers for a day of service. “And as they say, the rest is history,” said French.

Since that first volunteer shift, French has continued to embody the spirit of a volunteer by frequently - almost weekly dedicating her time to the Product Rescue Center (PRC), helping to sort and pack food products for the food insecure.

“The rewards of volunteering help to keep you grounded.

You realize that there are people who are less fortunate than you and you can do something to make a difference in their lives,” said French.

French still regularly joins her SunTrust colleagues at the Food Bank as part of their corporate outreach program, while

also consistently volunteering her own free time. In addition to working in the PRC, French sees first-hand the impact of the donated food through her service with her church, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Smyrna, a partner agency of the Food Bank.

French has been recognized year after year for her community efforts and has been rewarded through the United States President’s Volunteer Service Award – Bronze Level in 2011, 2012 and 2013, all demonstrating her dedication to the community by volunteering for more than 150 hours each year. Her goal is to receive the Silver Award in 2014, which includes more than 250 hours of service during that year.

French strongly encourages others to dedicate some time to

helping those in need. “You will feel better about yourself knowing that what you did helped someone who needed it.”

Longtime Supporter Picks Atlanta Community Food Bank to Receive Winnings In a crowd of 4,000 attendees at a recent conference, Gwinnett Medical Center Director of Recruitment Merideth Northcutt slipped her name into a drawing sponsored by software company Infor Global Solutions.

The award - a $1,000 donation to the winner’s favorite charity. Northcutt said she didn’t think twice about where her winnings would go.

“I wanted it to go to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. It was a week after the conference that I got the email that I was selected. I immediately let them know and they took care of it,” said Northcutt.

When asked why she selected the Food Bank, Northcutt stated, “I just think the whole mission is so commendable. I’ve watched over the years, and it’s been impressive to see how the Food Bank has grown.”

After giving a large donation several years ago, Northcutt’s mom was invited to come to the Food Bank to meet with other donors. She invited Northcutt and her husband to come with her.

ACFB Executive Director Bill Bolling spoke to the group, and what he had to say left an impression. “We came back to volunteer, sorting and packing food boxes,” Northcutt said. It was then, she said, that she knew the Food Bank was something she really needed to support.

“I’m thrilled that this gift will help feed many… at Thanksgiving and beyond,” she said.

Atlanta Community Food Bank client Avis sums up her spirit about life right now in simple, easy terms.

“I’m the type of person where if I can help you, I’ll help you,” said Avis. “But you know, I need help.”

Feeding America recently released “Hunger in America 2014” conducted in conjunction with nearly 200 member food banks, including the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB). The study revealed that

She went through a lot of “hard stuff” with her cancer treatment, she said, but was so happy to see Jerome when he came to see her. “He was my shield. He’d hold my hand. I wasn’t going to give up, because I had good support.”

That support also came from food bank partner Collins United Methodist Church as they made sure Avis and Jerome were taken care of when it came to food.

“I have to take 20-something bottles of medicine every day. I have to take it twice a day,” Avis said as she pulled out a bag of medicine.

“If I have so much as a fever, I have to go to the hospital.”

The hospital nearest to them, Emory Adventist, is closing, so they have to go to Emory’s main campus across town.

Their truck, the only means of transportation they have, is old and can be unreliable.

New Challenges Avis is unable to work due to her health. Jerome is a talented contractor, but it’s difficult to pick up larger jobs when he has to drop everything at a moment’s notice. “Since she’s been sick, I can’t take on something like a total kitchen remodel because if I get a call from her, I have to pack it up and leave and go to the hospital or wherever.”

was faced his own illness – a recent diabetes diagnosis. It started when those around him noticed he had lost a substantial amount of weight. “I was thinking it was probably stress because I have a lot of people calling. I have a lot of appointments to be here, be there. It’s like a huge list every week.”

Avis tricked him into getting a free screening test at the West End Health Center, and he had a sugar level of 530, which is dangerously high.

A Real, True Blessing Without access to healthy foods, Jerome would have to begin insulin treatment. Most of the fresh vegetables Avis and Jerome receive come from the

pantry, and they love making baked fish and big salads with their own dressing. “Now we have to watch what we eat,” said Avis. “I don’t know what I’d do without him. I’m grateful for a place where we can get food.”

“It’s been a real, true blessing,” said Jerome. “If I go, there’s gotta be a need. When the money hits the house, it goes out to pay bills. I wouldn’t condone just going to get food when you don’t really need it.

At least we have a roof over our head and we can pay bills, but when it comes down to eating, it’s just something now that I have to do.”

“We’re doing the best we can.” said Avis.

6.7 Million Meals... Thrilling!

DragonCon Chooses the Food Bank

Members of the Atlanta Apartment Association know a thing or two about tackling hunger. For the past 27 years, they’ve made the cause a top priority through their annual Food-A-Thon to benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Donations from this year’s effort were delivered on Oct. 17 in a festive parade, themed “So You Think You CAN Dance?” that brought out the creativity in all the participants. Just one of the many musical numbers that blew us away was a rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Even more thrilling – $1.1 million and 105,000 pounds of food delivered – enough for 6.7 million meals!

DragonCon serves as one of the largest science fiction fan conventions in the world, drawing thousands of enthusiasts to Atlanta during Labor Day weekend. Part of the convention includes a fundraising component, and this year the Atlanta Community Food Bank was selected as the benefiting nonprofit. Thanks to the efforts of the DragonCon committee and attendees, the convention generously donated a check for $115,175.07 to the Food Bank. Accountants Fight for the Hungry The Georgia Society of CPAs and Georgia’s top accounting firms proved they can throw a mean food fight without even a squirt of mustard or ketchup. In the first annual “Food Fight” campaign, 51 firms in 17 cities competed in the Georgia Accounting Food Fight and raised $97,254 and 9,861 pounds of food for Georgia food banks, including the Atlanta Community Food Bank. We Painted the Town Orange for Hunger Action Month!

Thank you for taking action and making a difference.

Every September, Feeding America food banks across the nation “Go Orange” to raise food, funds and awareness during Hunger Action Month.

Here in Atlanta, the Atlanta Community Food Bank embarked on some exciting new ventures. We couldn’t have done it without YOU – our partners, supporters and advocates.

One of Atlanta’s favorite guilty pleasures, King of Pops, helped us kick off the month! Eight companies around the city donated to ACFB in exchange for having King of Pops distribute gourmet pops to their employees. On September 4, supporters everywhere celebrated “Go Orange Day” by wearing orange – from community volunteers to our friends at 11 Alive News and WSB TV 2 who looked sharp in orange as they aired stories to help build awareness. We also fought hunger in style with the first annual Tangerine Tango fashion show to benefit the Food Bank on September 17 at Bloomingdale’s Lenox Square.

Thanks to an incredible tidal wave of support from Georgians who rallied to the end, ACFB made it into the winners’ circle to receive a $60,000 grant in Walmart’s SPARK CHANGE “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” competition! $15,000 of the grant will go to ACFB partner agency Open Hand. Walmart will distribute $3 million in $60,000 grants to the 50 food banks that received the most votes during the campaign.

King of Pops created two special flavors for Hunger Action Month, Canteloupe/Orange and Key Lime Pie, but they had plenty of other favorites on hand. Chocolate Sea Salt, anyone?
