India’s infrastructure sector has battled decades of dysfunction. The previous year was not an exception. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report for 20142015, India ranked 87th out of 142 countries for its infrastructure. Given the country’s strained public finances, addressing the infrastructure gap will require strong participation on the part of private and foreign investors through public-private partnerships. However, the report observed that the institutional framework needs to improve to materialise such investments.

Equipment Apollo Tyres launches India’s largest loader tyre Apollo Tyres has launched AWL 822, the largest loader tyre produced in India, at the 12th International Mining and Machinery Exhibition (IMME) 2014 in Kolkata. The company has also introduced ALT 188 TX tyre with the industry’s first traction tread design at the exhibition.

AWL 822, used for loaders and dozers in high-abrasion conditions, is manufactured using 1,300-kg rubber, 700kg carbon black and silica, 200-kg nylon fabric and 300 kg of other rubber chemicals. With a size of 45/65-45 L5, the tyre has a special tread design with stone ejectors for protection and trouble-free service and side protector for improved resistance to shoulder and sidewall cuts.

ALT 188 TX is a unique and innovative traction tread design introduced in bias construction segment for slurry and muddy conditions. It has a customised tread compound which provides excellent performance in varying mine conditions, wider grooves towards the shoulder which reduce the chances of stone entrapment

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (DICV), the 100 per cent whollyowned subsidiary of Daimler AG, together with Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), one of Asia’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers and partner under the Umbrella of Daimler Trucks Asia (DTA), has announced management changes to take effect in March and April next year.

Marc Llistosella, currently Head of Marketing, Sales and After-sales, Trucks Asia & Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), becomes new Head of Daimler Trucks Asia (Fuso and BharatBenz) on April 1, 2015. In his new position, he will directly report to Dr Wolfgang Bernhard.

Llistosella has been leading DICV right from a planning phase as a greenfield project. He built the organisation, the plant and led the development of a whole new product range under the brand BharatBenz for the Indian market as well as Fuso trucks for markets in Asia and Africa.

TIL Ltd. under the TIL - HYSTER partnership rolled out the 100th Reach Stacker, from its Changual facility in Kharagpur.

The HYSTER-TIL ReachStacker is manufactured by TIL under license agreement with NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc. (NMHG) for its Hyster brand. The 100th Reach Stacker was delivered to Pramod Gupta, Managing Director, EFC Logistics India Pvt. Ltd. In 2008, TIL forged the partnership and licensee agreement with NMHG (Hyster Brand), for manufacturing Hyster designed Reach Stackers in its factory for the Indian market. This partnership also enables TIL to sell and service the Hyster range of products in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The Reach Stackers are built as per Hyster design and stringent quality standards in line with those produced at Hyster`s Nijmegen plant in the Netherlands. HYSTER-TIL Reach stackers have become the most preferred choice of customers in India and already garnered over significant market share in the Reach Stacker market in India within a short span, the company informed.

Speaking on the occasion, Sumit Mazumder, Chairman and Managing Director, TIL said, “The roll out of the 100th Reach Stacker is a significant milestone on our 70th anniversary and we are confident of manufacturing and rolling out the next 100 Reach Stackers in a much shorter time.”

Jakson bags 110Cr MEP contract from Delhi Metro Jakson Group, India’s one of the leading power solutions companies, has won order worth ` 110 crore from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to execute MEP work under Phase I of Kochi Metro Rail Project.

As part of the turnkey contract, Jakson will undertake supply, installation, testing and commissioning of E&M, fire detection and fire suppression systems, including DG sets for 22 elevated metro stations of Aluva-Petta line spanning 22.25 km and Muttom Depot.

Scope of work mainly consist of SITC of switchgear panel, distribution panel, cabling, indoor lighting/fans, protective earthing, external lighting, UPS/inverter system, air conditioning, DG set, fire alarm and annunciation system, fire hydrant system, sprinkler system, panel flooding tube system, EOT cranes, air compressor and 1,600 KWp roof top solar system.

The execution work on the first phase of this project has started and is expected to be complete by June, 2016.

The global real estate consultancy reveals that India’s key hospitality markets have shown a downward trend in Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) whilst the Average Daily Rate (ADR) in both cities have recorded an increase of 2 per cent.

Despite hopeful economic outlook on the table, supply-side growth may stifle gains in hotel performance in the short-term. In Mumbai, a 6.6 per cent increase in air arrivals at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in the year ending-June 2014 was boosted by the new airport terminal inaugurated in February 2014.

Despite a slight rise in ADR, a 3.3 per cent fall in Occupancy is expected to push RevPAR in 2014 down by 1.3 per cent over 2013 to ` 4,085. In NCR Delhi, a RevPAR is expected to fall by a larger -6.7 per cent due to a significant drop in Occupancy despite a similar growth story at Indira Gandhi Airport.

Building Material Essar Steel commissions 6 mtpa pellet plant in Odisha The company plans to add six MTPA pellet plant more at Paradeep taking the annual pellet production capacity of Odisha complex to 12 MTPA.

Essar Steel has commissioned an integrated Pellet Complex in Odisha comprising of iron ore beneficiation facility at Dabuna (Keonjhar), six MTPA pellet plant at Paradeep (Jagatsinghpur) and 253 kms long slurry pipe line with 12 MTPA carrying capacity connecting the beneficiation facility and pellet plant.

Essar has invested around ` 6,000 crores in setting up this integrated complex. The beneficiation facility is designed to use low grade iron ore fines.

Materials manufacturer Bayer MaterialScience concentrating intently on innovation and sustainability as it prepares for its planned independence.

One current innovation from Bayer MaterialScience is a product that improves wind turbines and thus can contribute to the wider adoption of renewable energies. The product is a polyurethanebased infusion resin that increases the efficiency of rotor blades and shortens their production time. For the automotive industry, the company has developed DirectCoating/DirectSkinning technology – a process with which high-quality plastic components for automotive interiors can be produced and coated with a premium decorative finish in a single step.

In the field of development, Bayer MaterialScience has posted a number of new successes, including with its research into CO2 as a new raw material for making plastics.

Charanjit S. Shah shares how a true architecture should reflect upon socioeconomic, cultural, religious and intellectual aspects and help in creating a conducive environment.

What drew you to architecture, and how do you describe your journey?

During my architecture education at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, expert faculties groomed me, and this inspired and transformed my thought process as well as inculcated the passion for architecture. Since then I started to follow the footsteps of great masters and dedicated myself to achieve excellence in this profession.

My understanding towards the various materials, adoption in innovation of construction details and critical structural analysis along with other elements of applied architecture has been instrumental in creating sustainable built forms.

There is a widespread belief that architecture is an art. How do you define this?

Perhaps architecture is beyond art and should be looked upon beyond functionality,

as if putting old wine into a new bottle. Most of the ancient Indian cities have developed through the various sustainable features.

The modern architecture with advancement of technology, construction techniques and preparation aspects have been looked upon in refining physical planning in terms of scale, layers, interface, connectivity and responsive to various other technical needs in terms of infrastructure and human comforts.

As an architect, creating sustainable green architecture could be achieved by passive strategies of green architecture, respecting the solar movement, mutual shading, wallwindow ratios and insulation of the envelope of the building as well as using high-tech appropriate materials, which could insulate the envelope by maximizing the daylight and minimizing the heat gain. Today green buildings are being looked upon catering to innovations and techniques in terms of use of intelligent building management systems and automation and thus creating architecture.

Most cost-effective steps towards reduction in a building’s energy consumption usually occur during the design process. What should be the perfect design of a green building?

In terms of energy-conscious building designs, most of the challenges are to be

There are sufficient tools and techniques wherein energy and cost-effective challenges in respect of reducing of heat gain inside the building could be by adopting components respecting solar movement, mutual shading, wall-window ratios, insulation of the building envelope and using high tech appropriate materials.

A perfect green building can be achieved by respecting energy building code which will be helpful in creating green building if religiously adhered to with active use of active and passive design strategies.

Since the 1980s, passive solar building design and passive house have demonstrated heating energy consumption reductions of 70-90 per cent in many locations. Where does India stand in designing passive solar buildings?

We need to be very conscious and shift our focus from fossil to solar energy as solar energy can provide for 10,000 times of our power requirements. Most of India is rich in getting solar heat which could definitely be converted into energy, and the same is adopted and experimented in most parts of our country. Besides having the initial teething and practical problems, we could probably say that we are now comfortable and fully equipped with technology wherein this would be used from micro to macro levels in various building designs.

There are many more innovations wherein through various roof coverage of functional

areas, atriums, car parks, stadiums and service corridors substituting the roof cover by solar panels is a by-product besides the functionality. I have also attempted to use the solar panels in the car park areas for various mass-transit projects like Chennai Airport and Raipur Airport for giving shade and also producing energy by use of solar voltaic panels. Similarly, they have been used again as a cover for the metro wire duct for Akshardham station. Solar park forms have also been created on the nonproductive lands as an alternative way of producing energy.

What are the challenges to build a green building, and how can we overcome them?

Any green building architect should identify places with intrinsic suitability for agriculture, forestry, recreation and urbanisation. Designing with nature at a building level is about recognising sun paths, breezes, shade trees and rock formations that can be used to create something that people can inhabit comfortably, while recognising that natural features such as trees, animal tracks, habitats and natural drainage systems must be ‘protected’.

By limiting itself to sustainability that is dependent on technology for solutions, sustainable architecture in India fails to incorporate the critical dimension of social and cultural sustainability without which it may not work in the Indian context.

My personal view is that the sustainable architecture cannot be restricted to

quantitative environmental sustainability. It is essential that relationship among social, economic and environmental sustainability should become a critical consideration for the design of India’s built environment.

How is Creative Group playing its role in developing green buildings? Name some of your green buildings and share their green features?

Another green project is Times Square Mall in Naya Raipur. The shopping mall is a design project for an entire microurbanism. Times Square Mall is a step towards responsive architecture and design for the next generation, catering to all aspects of sustainable, affordable design with economic viability and commercial feasibility. n

Living in green Sustainable building isn’t a style statement anymore; it has become a necessity

oing green is the new buzzword, and there are several examples where the existing buildings are retrofit with sustainable features.

Green building uses environmentally responsible and resource-efficient process throughout a building’s life cycle. Although new technologies are constantly being developed to complement current practices in creating greener structures, the common objective is to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment.

In order to achieve that, a green building efficiently uses energy, water and other resources. A green building also reduces waste, pollution and environmental degradation.

Even a green building costs less to operate and have excellent energy performance.

Goals of green buildings The main objective of a green building is environmental, economic and social benefits.

“Green building or green construction aims to reduce the environmental impact of building on its surroundings throughout its life cycle from sitting to design, construction,

operation, maintenance, renovation and demolition,” explains Pankaj Kaushal, VP - Architecture, REPL. “The common objective is that green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on humans and the environment by efficient use of energy, water and other resources, protecting occupant health, improving employee productivity, and reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation.”

Green building brings together an array of practices, techniques and skills to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment. It often emphasises on renewable resources like using sunlight through passive solar, using plants and trees through green roofs and reducing rainwater run-off.

However, modern sustainability initiatives call for an integrated and synergistic design to both new construction and in the retrofitting of existing structures.

Also known as sustainable design, this approach integrates the building life cycle with each green practice employed with a design-purpose to create a synergy among the practices used.

Green means saving energy The importance of how buildings are designed, built and managed is recognised as being able to influence the negative impact of the built environment. Contributing up to 40 percent of CO2 emissions and 40 per cent of energy consumption, buildings have a major impact on climate change.

Green buildings include measures to reduce energy consumption – both the embodied energy required to extract, process, transport and install building materials and operating energy to provide services such as heating and power for equipment.

He adds, “One of the most important tasks is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

An increasing concentration level in the atmosphere is said to be the main reason for rising temperatures. For instance, the CO2 concentration in most industrialised countries has increased by more than 20 per cent in the last 60 years.”

Perfect design for green buildings Most important step towards constructing a green building usually occurs during the design process. Design of a green building needs to be done from the point of view of optimal life-cycle costs, not the first cost.

Many aspects of a building’s performance depend on design stage interventions.

Appropriate passive architecture techniques, sun path analysis, and orientation and climatic responsive envelope design are measures which can contribute to a great extent if applied at the right stage.

However, there is nothing as perfect design for a sustainable structure. It is contextual.

One must understand the end-use application of the building and appropriate design needs to be worked out. Design stage is the very crucial to build in sustainability in the project.

Challenges to develop green buildings Achieving sustainability in building poses several challenges. There are two reasons for the slow adoption of sustainability in India: technical and financial. Organisations like IGBC are working to turn around these impediments. With Green Building Rating System, IGBC is helping buildings sustain energy-efficient practices over the life of a building.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are the 21st century buzzword. India only needs to educate the people about the benefits of green buildings. Once the technology and materials are locally available and pricing become competitive, green buildings will be widely accepted.

Essential products for green buildings For a green building, materials matter — inside and out. These blocks have low density and are lightweight. Use of recycled industrial goods, such as coal combustion products, foundry sand and demolition debris, is also suggested in construction projects.”

Trends and opportunities The green buildings concept has caught up and gained great impetus over the years.

Sustainable buildings take into account the building’s entire life cycle. Mr Kaushal endorses this thought too. He explains, “Green buildings are gaining momentum and could account for 20 per cent of all constructions by 2030. They are healthier places to live and work, reduce energy and water use, and generate better profits.”

Mr Durrani also feels the same. “Green building in India will continue its strong growth in the near future. There is a growing focus on energy efficiency in all kinds of buildings, especially on the increasing role of building automation. Other trends that will continue to develop include the use of solar power in buildings, the focus on materials, waste and recycling as well as onsite water treatment solutions.”

With the tremendous growth in economic activity across the globe placing pressure on natural and environmental resources, experts and thinkers are seeking sustainable solutions in all aspects of our lives.

Real estate development is a significant contributor to global warming as it uses about 40 per cent of the energy, and it is

one of the prime contributors to extensive emission of greenhouse gases. Therefore, there is an extreme need to develop green buildings. Though green building concept is not new in India and the principles have been successfully utilised for centuries, it has become an essential instrument towards sustainability in the recent years.

Sustainability in buildings is not only limited to energy conservation, but also includes efficient use of water and natural resources, impact on the neighbouring environment and working conditions for occupants.

Green building design is based on ‘form follows function’ kind of designing which is associated with modern architecture and design in the 20th century. This principle rests on the concept that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose.

This, however, should not be mistaken as a compromise in the aesthetic appeal of the design. In fact, buildings all around the world are being built with its functionality and sustainability in mind without losing out on its visual appeal.

technology II Cover Story Green buildings integrate several sustainable features, such as efficient use of water, energy-efficiency, eco-friendly environment, use of renewable energy, use of recycled and recyclable materials, preserving natural topography, soil erosion and sedimentation control, effective control and building management systems and improved indoor quality for health and comfort. There are a few challenges with respect to such constructions in India. Primarily, it is due to the perception that building such projects incurs higher costs and a lot of maintenance.

A certified or silver-rated green building would have incremental costs in the range of 3-5 per cent over conventional ones, whereas the cost can go up further for Gold or Platinum rated projects. However, we found out that certain developers were already considering green building initiatives in their projects such as building materials with good thermal insulating properties, high-efficiency HVAC and lighting equipment, solar water heating, water recycling plants, rain water harvesting systems and so forth. For such developers the incremental costs would be restricted to the fees for certification and consulting only.

In a commercial green building, even these incremental costs could be easily recovered within a few years through energy savings, provided best operation and maintenance practices are followed.

Different technologies in each component of a building have contributed to bringing down the incremental costs for going green.

Some of them are mentioned below: Building envelope Building envelope consists of roof, fenestration, glazing and the exterior walls.

A thermally insulated building envelope involves using materials that reduce heat transfer by conduction, radiation and convection. It helps cut down the heat load in the building, downsising the airconditioning equipment required to cool the spaces, and hence results in lowering of the capital costs for the project. Thermal performance of fenestration, wall and roof assembly depends on Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and that of glazing depends on the solar energy transmittance through the glazing (measured by U-Value).

Lower the SHGC and U-Values, better are the thermal insulating properties of the wall, roof, fenestration and glass.

Using insulation materials like extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS) and moulded expanded polystyrene (EPS) decrease the SHGC value of the wall and roof assembly, thereby offering good thermal insulation.

But due to incremental cost, developers restrict the usage of insulation materials to roof. As a cheaper alternative to insulation materials for exterior walls, one may opt for fly ash bricks or AAC blocks instead of clay or normal concrete bricks, as they have excellent thermal insulation properties. Fly ash acts as a good insulating material and is used in both fly ash bricks as well as AAC blocks. The autoclaved aerated concrete is a versatile lightweight construction material which has low density and excellent insulation properties. The low density is achieved by the formation of air voids to produce a cellular structure.

External shading devices such as awnings, overhangs and trellises are part of the building envelope. These are installed over windows and prevent unwanted solar heat from entering a conditioned space.

Lighting systems Lighting is an essential requirement for any facility and touches the day-to-day lives of people in many ways. It accounts for 15 per cent of the total energy consumed in a developing country as against 7 to 10 per cent in developed countries.

Energy efficiency has often been viewed as a ‘resource option’ just like coal, oil or natural gas. For India, it provides additional value by preserving the resource base and mitigating the global climate change.

There has been continuous development in lighting technologies over the past 60 years to produce the best lighting products and controls for creating higher lighting quality with reduced energy consumption. However, the speed at which these technological developments have taken place has not been complemented by a corresponding pace in generating awareness about them and their availability to the end users. Also, the emergence of new secondary players has generated a lot of competition in the lighting market.

These market barriers should be addressed

through aggressive customer-oriented awareness programmes and demonstration projects.

Since the past decade, technology has leapfrogged given various cost-effective options to the end users.

Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems HVAC by and large consists of centralised airconditioning system, basement ventilation system and staircase pressurisation system.

In Indian context, there is not much requirement of heating. HVAC system is one of the costliest forms of energy use in any commercial building. Some of the factors impacting the energy consumption are occupancy, hours of operations, heat load profile and seasonal ambient conditions.

Building automation and building management system (BMS) BMS includes centralised monitoring and control of systems such as lighting, HVAC and fire detection system.

As the people grow more aware of the impact that green building and sustainable development can have in saving our earth from climate change, we can hope that more of such innovations will be created to help experts make that a reality. In the midst of a global ecological crisis, green building consultants and architects are relentlessly pursuing design strategies that manage to mitigate the toxic byproducts of our consumption habits, while maximising our use of sustainable energy sources. Meeting these challenges means more deeply integrating green technologies like wind and solar power, natural climate controls and space-age materials in to the building processes. It is not just a way to conserve energy but also our responsibility towards our future generations. Today, it is the only LEED Platinum status Eco Commercial Building (ECB) in India, because it is an environmentally sustainable building, meeting an impressive 64 out of 69 parameters laid down by LEED. By 2013, it produced more electricity (68,748 kWh) than what it consumed (67,258 kWh), leaving it with a surplus of 1,490 kWh for the year.

It is talking a lot on cleaner environment, low pollution, greener world and to make our dear world a better place to live. In fact, this concept has started long back in India in construction industry, when CII has taken an initiative to form IGBC to promote the concept of making energy-efficient, ecofriendly buildings.

There are few major parameters that are essential to rate a building as a green building. One must know what is the rating system and the qualification parameters, which has to be achieved to claim a building green. A very well-crafted document prepared

by IGBC is available (IGBC Green House Rating system Version 1 and 2) which is a thorough guideline to follow to make green building. This book became very handy during conceptualisation and execution of the project. There was a rich experience gained in the process of execution of the project which gradually ended with success and platinum certification of the project.

PEB in green building PEB industry has a major role to play as far as green building is concerned. There are couple of building components and systems, which are essential to get a building certified as green building.

A. Energy-efficiency front • Natural ventilation system using turbo vent and roof monitors in place of powered roof extractors • Installing solar heating system on roof space for reduction of electrical consumption where hot water is required for the industry • Installing poly carbonate sheet on roof to provide ample lighting in the shop floor during day time and reduction of electrical lighting requirements • Designing and placing the building in such a way that adequate natural ventilation system (natural flow of wind within the building) happens, resulting to reduction of exhaust fans or air circulators.

B. Materials front • Waste reduction during construction is possible in PEB as it is assembled onsite and there is little chance of excess material or waste.

• Steel is the basic raw material for PEB, and steel is a material with large quantity of recycled content, which is a pre-requisite for green building • Materials that are produced near and around the PEB manufacturing unit can be attributed for green building • Low VOC paint is also required for a green building.

Water efficiency in green building PEB can be utilised for rainwater harvesting.

A very interesting method can be adopted for water storage and harvesting by effectively utilising PEB concept. If the down spouts are again connected with a common header at the bottom of the building and connected to a large, underground reservoir, the rainwater can be stored. As rainwater has purity near to deionised (DM) water, the same can be used in machine shops where CNC cutting tools are in operation. In CNC cutting tools, huge amount of cutting fluid is required on a daily basis, which demands DM water to dilute it. This harvested water can be utilised effectively as it is a free source. This is an ideal method of water preservation.

Promoting green buildings The entire world is now marching forward for a cleaner, greener environment. Green building is one of the concepts, which are easily adoptable and can make a building green for a long time. Adoption and implementation is comparatively easy. Success rate of making green building is high. To promote green building concept, India Government may consider some incentive scheme to motivate and propagate the construction of green building.

ZINCALUME steel, due to its specific surface coatings, retains its bright surface for longer. The surface reflects more heat thus transferring lesser heat inside, ensuring better thermal performance and comfort for longer duration.

Recyclability: The base steel of ZINCALUME steel and COLORBOND steel has recycled steel. It can be further recycled after every life. While the greater part can be recycled, if not recycled it becomes natural part of earth as iron oxide.

Passive design: ZINCALUME steel and COLORBOND steel are amenable to designs that improve shading. Properly insulated ZINCALUME steel roofing and cladding provides a draft-proof envelope to retain cool air inside the building for increased comfort.

Water harvesting: Because of usage of “heavy metal (Pb/Cr/Cd) free” paints, runoff water from COLORBOND steel can be harvested for reuse.

For above reasons both ZINCALUME steel and COLORBOND steel are extensively used as construction material for buildings.

With these benefits, the cost to maintain a comfortable atmosphere is reduced, and dependence on energy resources and general air pollution is lowered there by providing a healthier life. n

How did your company perform over the past two years?

Richa has always been consistent in terms of growth and performance. The past 2 years have been phenomenal for the company as we have acquired projects from some of the major clients - private as well as government sectors like BHEL and BSWC. We have recently completed one of the highest multistorey buildings for Madhu Silica in Gujarat which is indeed another benchmark project in history of the company. Polymer warehouse, a turnkey project for IOCL has also been perfected which is again an accomplishment project for us.

What role does your company play in a green building?

Pre-engineered buildings are inherently green products and have a little impact on the environment as compared to traditional construction. These buildings are eco-friendly as these are not constructed and fabricated on-site and completely manufactured in the factory under systematic and automated controls.

Richa PEB structures are made with a high proportion of recycled content, i.e. 7080 per cent. Also, use of galvanized steel makes these buildings rust resistant.

Name some of your products or solutions that are essential for green buildings?

We provide fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) and polycarbonate roofing sheets which provide excellent natural light transmission.

What are the trends and opportunities in green? And how is your company, as a supplier to this industry, playing its role to promote green buildings in India Keeping in lieu of the economic need of green revolution, Richa has developed a new vertical for AAC blocks, a certified green building material. Use of AAC blocks with steel structures is the most economical, ecofriendly solution to all types of buildings, including residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Richa AAC blocks are totally inorganic and incombustible. The AAC blocks are fire resistant up to 160 C (more than twice the typical temperature in a building fire of 650 C) allows it to maintain its structural integrity even after fire. the 85 EC-B 5i flat-top crane which is being assembled at Liebherr’s Pune plant. The 85 EC-B 5i has a maximum load capacity of 5,000 kg and can lift 1,300 kg at the jib end, up to a maximum working radius of 50 m. The successful 85 EC-B 5i is specially adapted to the Indian market and inner-city needs. When the 85 EC-B 5i was developed, the emphasis was not only on the superstructure but also on the low-width 85 LC tower system, which has been optimally matched to the new crane and has new pin connectors.

When working in town and city centres, a decisive advantage is that the dimensions of all the assemblies of the new 85 EC-B 5i are so compact. The new 85 LC tower system has a cross-section of only 1.2 x 1.2 m, which simplifies both transportation and erecting work if the inner-city site is small or access is difficult. The 85 EC B 5i city crane can be erected quickly and safely in just about every gap in the building line. n

SDLG launches branded oils and lubricants at bC India

T

he new range of oils and lubricants from SDLG are specially designed for its range of construction machines to protect them against wear and tear. India is the first market outside China to offer customers the range of engine, hydraulic and transmission oils and SDLG will formally introduce them at bC India.

Following the launch of SDLG wheel loaders and road machinery in India in 2010, its manufacturer Shandong Lingong Machinery Co. Ltd. (known as Lingong) has identified the need for trusted maintenance products to support its growing machine population.

There are three products making up the SDLG oil and lubricants range, and all will be shown at bC India. First is the SDLG engine oil which is blended with hydrocracked base oils to deliver higher levels of engine cleanliness, which in turn leads to longer engine life, better output efficiency and lower maintenance costs.

Second is the SDLG hydraulic oil, which is also made from hydro-cracked base oils and which offers better thermal stability to protect components from oxidation and sludge build up as they are exposed to the higher temperatures caused by

working operations. Finally, there is the SDLG gear oil, which is a lubricant to be used with a variety of transmission units.

It offers long-term stable viscosity, which contributes to lower noise and offers better wear protection, even in the most demanding applications.

In India, Lingong currently distributes its range of SDLG wheel loaders, including the 3-tonne LG936L and LG938L, the 5-tonne LG958L and the 7-tonne LG979 as well as its G9190 motor grader, through a nationwide network of experienced construction equipment dealers. n

Potain MCT 205 The new Potain tower cranes are topless MCT models built at the company’s factory in Pune. The larger one is the MCT 205 which has a maximum 10-tonne capacity and can lift 1.75 tonnes at its maximum jib end of 65 metres. With a focus on fast erection, the complete upper works for the MCT 205 can be

assembled in four lifts. The heaviest group of components is just 7.9 tonnes and the full 65-metre jib can be placed in a single lift.

Attention has been paid to transportation too, with three jib sections able to fit inside a standard container.

Potain MCT 85 The second topless model from Potain making its debut in India was the MCT 85. Smaller than the MCT 205, it has a maximum 5-tonne capacity and an ability to lift 1.1 tonnse at its jib end of 52 metres. This practical unit is efficiently easy to transport and needs just two trucks for the entire top portion of the crane.

Again, on-site assembly is simplified, thanks to the pre-assembly work done at the Potain factory in Pune. Like the MCT 205, the MCT 85 can be operated as an internal climbing crane, positioned within the building that it is constructing. Mounted on 1.2-metre mast sections, the crane offers a maximum free-standing height of 33.2 metres when operating internally. n

How has been the market growth for your company?

We are doing well. In fact, the current year

has turned out to be better than the previous years. The last 2-3 years were stagnant in terms of growth, but this year the situation has improved. With the advent of new government in power, we expect things to take even better shape. We also predict higher growth for the upcoming years.

What kind of technology do you use?

We are a specialised steel manufacturer though a small operator in the whole global steel market. Our products are backed by intensive and extensive R&D and latest technology for instance direct quenching of hot rolled strip material and hot rolled plates immediately after rolling in an online process.

How do you foresee the year 2015 for your company?

We expect it to be better than 2014 and also plan to grow our business. With the industry growing in India, we surely are going to benefit by this growth. Also with the prime minister’s “Make In India” initiative, the manufacturing industry is set

to grow rapidly and one will witness medium and small enterprises mushroom. This would actually create a manufacturing revolution, and obviously all of us are going to be benefitted by this initiative.

How do you differentiate between your products from what your competitors offer in the market?

Our products like wear-resistant Raex steels and high-strength Optim steels are preferred world over by OEMs, fabricators and end users, alike.

To back the high-quality steel products, we have our technical support that we make available to our customers. We also involve with customers early at design and development stage. Our products bring improved life-cycle advantages and higher payload to customers and end users.

What kind of products do you manufacture and to what industries’ does it serve?

We produce wear-resistant steel branded as Raex and high-strength steels branded as Optim.

These steels are products of choice for use by lifting, handling and transportation segments in mining and construction sectors. n

teel industry is the backbone of any economy. If the economy is in recession, steel industry will also languish. In an exclusive interview with ACE Update, B Satish Kumar talks about economy, steel industry and the importance of government’s involvement.

What is your outlook on the status of steel industry in India?

Steel industry is facing lack of demand and also troubled by the import of cheaper steel from China, low prices and higher raw material costs. The government needs to take speedy action to protect the domestic production.

Delay in government action is forcing companies to import even raw material like iron ore though there is sufficient availability in India. Procedural delay bogged down by red-tapism is the cause. We need to understand what is at stake. Steel industry is the backbone of any economy.

If the economy is in recession, steel industry will also languish. Our economy is particularly dependant upon improvement of infrastructure which will also revive the steel industry and overall growth. Sadly the emphasis is lacking from the government.

It might be prudent for government to ensure a stable price scenario with respect to raw material prices like iron ore and coal with respect to steel producers. If the government looks for profit maximisation from mining activity, the steel industry will continue to suffer with the volatility of prices.

Steel industry is cyclical. We have a roadmap for growth up to 2025 to reach a capacity of 1 million tonnes of steel per annum from the present 300,000 TPA with setting up of new units in a phased manner. The first unit in this direction is proposed to be a 0.6 million TPA iron ore pelletisation unit to ensure raw material supply for our integrated steel manufacturing hub. n

Since Chartered Housing has started its journey in 1989, a lot has changed in the realty market. How has the Bangalore realty market evolved since then?

In the beginning when we started off, the realty market was at a very nascent stage. During that period, people were not willing to invest in property anywhere else but in the city because of proper roads, connectivity, and safety, to name a few. This limited the scope of expanding boundaries beyond. In the 90s, the IT boom completely changed the demographics of the city; migrating population was at an all time high and only increased in the coming years which resulted in expansion of city limits. IT has been the major growth driver and is responsible for aggressive real estate development in the city whether it is in the segment of apartment, villa or row houses.

What are the trends and opportunities in Bangalore realty market?

The new trend is compact but efficient apartments in the range of 950 sq. ft. to 1,400 sq. ft. This caters to the budget segment giving them comfortable living

space. The other trend is row housing which give clients the experience of a villa without the price tag of a villa. Typically villas cost upwards of 3 crore, but row houses will range between 2-3 crore for around 3,500-4,000 sq. ft. Given the fact that some of the areas are mostly developed and availability of land is decreasing in these parts, projects in these areas will cost a little more. Therefore, consumers should focus and buy properties in areas that are developing, which will result in getting better value for money.

Except Kanakapura Road, Bangalore, what are the next big investment destinations for Bangalore home buyers?

North Bangalore has the potential to become the next big investment destination after Kanakapura Road. Residential real estate activity in North Bangalore has gained traction post the commencement of the Bangalore International Airport. Proximity to the international airport and planned social and the physical infrastructure in the north have boosted development in the area.

The other hot destination is Hosur Road area, especially for a villa type investment due to its close proximity to Sarjapur and Koramangla. Budhigere cross and Kadugodi in the east are also witnessing demand due to their proximity to the IT hub of Whitefield and relatively good connectivity to the airport in the north via the ORR (Outer Ring Road).

You have been leading the Bangalore

Chapter of CREDAI Youth Wing. What are the initiatives the chapter has been taking to unite second generation developers to work together to improve the industry?

CREDAI youth wing have certain focus points — CSR, research and technology.

Each developer has a unique project or a unique system of working. These unique features when shared and understood by more developers, the overall standard of the projects will improve and in the process the entire quality of industry will go up. In order to do this, we have been visiting projects of various developers.

These interactions have benefitted in the next generation in interacting with each other and stay connected.
